Amazing Vietnamese spot on Kingsway. Came here for a dinner with friends on their recommendation and I'm so glad we chose this place. We came on a Thursday evening for dinner and the place was packed. We had a reservation (thank goodness) and got in right away but there was always a line at the door of people waiting. The place is overall pretty lively but not too loud. We had a baby with us and it was fine. My boyfriend and I got the signature pho and the lemongrass prawn mousse DIY spring rolls plate. Everything was really delicious and the portions are huge. It's a bit pricey but a totally shareable size, so going with multiple people and sharing a few dishes would be best. The water they gave us to cook the rice paper with was quite cold though, so they didn't get very soft, but that's okay. Honestly I loved the ordering system the best. They have touch screens where you can order things that allows for splitting different items on different bills so you can see how much each person is paying for right as you order. It's very fast to split items and so paying individually is so easy. There is free street parking if you don't mind walking a few blocks down. Otherwise it's paid parking by the restaurant. There are busses that stop by though, so it is pretty convenient. read more

This is new Vietnamese restaurant. Not just your typical bowl of pho noodles. They have a tablet at each table, you place your order with it. It's fantastic! You can even summon your wait-staff with it. The restaurant is cozy. Some of the basket-weave lamps are hanging a bit low and you might catch your head on them. They definitely maximized floor space too. It's a bit squishy in some areas. The food is beyond amazing. The chicken wings were super crunchy and very tasty. We went there on last Saturday night. They were so so busy. That was good for them, but it was too hot inside and so crowded. I looked on Yelp to see what they had. I saw they had a lot of food that I wanted it like snail dishes any kind, but when we got there, they didn't have it. So we were disappointed a lot. We ordered some dishes but the taste didn't good. Food is always keeping in good standard with the Vietnamese fusion style. It's certainly a friend's gathering place, they have choices of beef,pork,chicken and fish with different types of rice and noodles to be served. we were a party of ten with resos at 7:30 pm on a friday night, but even then the place was packed, with a lineup spilling onto the sidewalk. we still waited about 15 minutes for the group before us to finish dessert, and another 15 minutes deciding what to order (extensive menus with pictures = group decision paralysis). everything's ordered on a tablet. this isn't your basic pho joint. the menu stretches into vietnamese street food you don't usually see, plus a full roster of drinks: fruit teas, smoothies, yogurt drinks, viet iced coffee, and even durian desserts. the tablet also lets you omit onions, scallions, cilantro, tweak sweetness levels on drinks or whether you want your drink now or later. food came out in waves, there was a lull after the two bowls of pho, the broth was good (someone at our table commented that the noodles were too thick), then two of the three orders of butter garlic chicken wings, followed by lemongrass chicken, lemongrass pork, spring rolls, meat platters, interspersed with all our drink orders and finally the last set of wings. the wings were packed with flavour, came with two dipping sauces (one tamarind-y, the other maybe lime + chili?), slightly greasy and a bit hard, like they'd been refried. our group contemplated the best chicken wings we've ever had, and these weren't it, but it was still demolished without hesitation. the crab spring rolls were flaky and crisp but leaned heavy on the minced meat, which overpowered the crab. meanwhile, one person at our table took on the role of masterchef contestant, expertly soaking then rolling rice paper wraps and assembling a baguette topped with saucy meats, eager to share and have us experience the dishes like the perfect host. i was already overwhelmed (and overstuffed) trying to tackle my own order and drink/dessert of coconut milk, with mochi . the vibe: very loud. as in, "shout across the table" loud. we had to repeat ourselves, ask the other person to repeat what they just said, attempt lip reading, or simply nod politely and pretend we heard. elbow to elbow seating and plates hanging off the table edges added to the organized chaos. servers were slow to clear, but we sat for three hours without ever being rushed. fair trade. all in all, chaotic, loud, flavour packed, and best tackled with a group who's up for family style sharing, leaning in (literally) for conversation, and laughing through the madness. read more

After a night out in Vancouver, we just needed some good vietnamese nhậu food. Ganh was a top choice within Yelp and we decided to give it a try. We were very hungry, but once we got there, they were really busy and we had to wait for a while even though we made a reservation. The food came out pretty fast. The snails and clams were good starters, along with the squid and chicken wings. The Bò Né here was not up to par with our standard of how it should be. I had a similar experience at another place called Lady Lunch where it has gravy in the dish. In the states, that is unheard of. Even though we had a giant piece of bone marrow, it didn't really save the dish. The place was well-decorated in a way that really resonated "Vietnam". We ordered a few drinks and they were alright, we probably would come back just for the other dishes, but still good to come. read more

Solid pho - could really taste the flavor in the broth. The carpaccio was sliced a bit thick, so it became hard to chew. The chicken wings were a bit oily for our taste. Gang has easily become one of my favourite Vietnamese restaurants! Aside from the usual menu items they have a grand selection of other more unique Vietnamese dishes as well that ranges from razor clam, from legs, sea snail, beef carpaccio and many more. In my recent visit my friends and I arrived 5 minutes before their last call and the restaurant was nice enough to serve us. And all their dishes came very quickly within 10 mins.we ordered the beef carpaccio, chef choice pho that came along with a mung bean pandan dessert, razor clams, and lemongrass chicken and spring roll vermicelli. Ask for their spicy sauce. - Nuoc cam tuoi ep ($6.95) - one of the worst fresh squeezed orange juices. All ice. - Cha gio ($8.95) - tiny portion. - Bun ca ganh ($17.50) - fish cakes and sausage were delicious. Fried fish was slightly dry. - Bun bo hue ($17.95) - broth lacked complexity. - Pho tai nam bo vien ($16.95) - broth was solid with star anise shining through. - Bun cha ha noi ($18.50) - meatballs/shoulder were excellent. From Ganh to GONE in 60 seconds... Ever since this place first opened and I reviewed it, I have been back here numerous times and recommended to many friends. It has expanded its menu extensively. However, lately in the last 2-3 visits, I have experienced a decline in its service and food quality level. Decided to give this place another go on a rainy day since had a hard time finding parking at a couple of my favourite places. Walked in, requested a booth seat since I saw no one seated on them and there were only 3 other tables occupied (the restaurant was pretty empty). Was told they are "reserved" (Got seated at a tiny table close to the back entrance and bathroom instead (lovely!! Love genius minds and indescribable logic). Usually I order quite a few dishes but since I have a lovely table the size to fit 2 bowls, that was exactly what i ordered; 1. Vietnamese mixed rice paper rolls. Either the mango wasn't fresh or been sitting around for a while, it's missing that nice fresh taste. 2. House special pho. The soup was hot, the meats were a bit on the tougher side, and the cook was too generous by added a little too much MSG and salt (could feel my mouth dry). 3. Bone marrow lover pho. Don't let the picture fool you lol it's actually half of a bone barrow then cut in twos and have them sitting on top of the noodles and beef to give the illusion that you are getting a lot of bone marrow but in reality it's not much. Honestly for $2 less, you get more bone marrow and everything else with the house special pho. So technically this bone marrow lover pho is a $24.95 failed. Overall, the food quality is certainly declining, possibly expanding the menu too fast? Should stay focus on quality rather than quantity (trying to have every dishes all the Viet restaurants have combined is a bit ambitious and perhaps a bit too greedy?) . The restaurant still maintain that casual atmosphere where everyone is welcome. The main complaint I have since day one are the chairs having that inside out backrest (it's almost like vacationing in Thailand and feeling something is always trying to poke you from behind). As for the service, slowly from warm and welcoming to becoming extinct like the dinosaurs. What happened?!? (It seriously went from me love you long time to me just want your money bye!). Serving customers are now just at the employees convenience? (Btw... please don't put up reserved signs on tables and tell customers that when they are not, only stupid minded businesses do this dummy practice). And seating customers closest to the washroom when the restaurant is almost literally empty is as smart as a beansprout, really! Anyways, a total disappointing experience especially when I normally order a lot here and tipping over 25% to 30% every visit. This time around, a big thank you 8% tip. Too many similar and better places around. It will be a long time if I ever come back and not a recommendation by me. P.S. we all rallied behind you when you were bullied by your employees awhile back, don't mistreat your customers. read more

The new spot in town for smacking good vietnamese cuisine! We were so surprised that this little spot on kingsway was packed on a weekend evening, the wait was closer to an hour and they did have a sign-in bulletin inside. P.s. they have since updated the sign-in to an SMS system, so parties and return after receiving a text notification. We did find service a taddd slow from the kitchen side but the food made up for our hangry bellies. Everything looked delicious on the menu and around our neighboring tables. Of course their classic pho to start. Piping hot both with a generous mix of tender meat cuts hit the spot. I don't see it much, but the pho was served with a kicking side dish of pickled chilies and garlic (killer, and addictive). We also tried the garlic butter escargot, this was served with a side of toasted baguette and let me tell you - I could've just lived off the garlic butter sauce and bread alone. We were warned at time of order that the snails might be fishier (?) than expected due to its frozen nature, and it tasted fine to us. Appreciated the heads up! We all loved the dodging beef sizzling plate as well - it looked like a breakfast plate but much bougier. With the generous addition of bone marrow and pate, this dish (also served with bread) is a fun and delicious experience. We had bits of bread dipped and lathered in the buttery richness of the bone marrow, runny egg yolks and rich pate spread. This one was a finger licking good dish! And although I am not the biggest carpaccio die-hard, the sauce that was served with the tender meat slices of this carpaccio made it more exciting. It was dressed with crunchy shallots and cilantro stems, springy amplified with lime juice and a sweet-tangy sauce. Overall it was a nice refresher from all the food we had ordered...for two. Clean and modern interior. Great service. Super authentic hole-in-the-wall level of Vietnamese food without the hole! Super diverse menu, featuring traditional Vietnamese delights. Bánh Canh Cua had chewy, perfectly cooked noodles and flavorful broth -- tangy, spicy, sweet and sour. Delicious! I was introduced to a completely different version of Bun Rieu -- the northern version that I ate had perfectly cooked noodles and incredible cha lua (pork cakes). The broth was earthy, hearty, and full of umami. Not at all what I expected, but everything I didn't know to ask for. Served with iced tea, this was a super satisfying late-night meal. Last week we came here for the first time for lunch at around 1 pm. Their business was pretty good with a continuous flow of customers even after 1 pm. Menu offers a wide variety when compares to average Vietnamese restaurants. Price is reasonable and ordering is done on an iPad. Parking on the street. We had Hà Nội egg hot coffee, chicken wings and sautéed beef in soup noodles. All tasted great and we will be back. We've been to this restaurant twice now, in quick succession, due to the fact that it's just good food. The place is typical to most Vietnamese spots in Vancouver but deserves a special shout-out just for the feels. The staff are extremely friendly, I also love the old school call-for-service buttons at each table. Word is, Ganh used to be a Korean restaurant before it taking over the space. Now, I typically take the boring "don't fix what ain't broke" approach to Vietnamese food but Ganh presented options that have changed my perspective on just ordering the house special pho. Drinks are also very interesting and they have awesome desserts. Also, I appreciate the many photos they have in their menu. Looks like the Korean place here has died and is now replaced by a Vietnamese place. The place has turned over probably 4 times in the last decade. Parking is available behind the building (I think it's 2 or so spots of alley parking), as well as the side streets. The place looks pretty nice and modern. Bamboo chairs, and wood tables. Does have that SE Asian feel. Staff were friendly and cheerful. No complaints. I had their special fish bun. It was pretty beautiful. The name is a bit of a misnomer. The bowl actually contains fish cakes, some cooked fish, and some fried(?) fish. Special mention to the giant pile of dill on top. Oh hello. There was also a slice of tomato, and some Vietnamese vegetables. The broth was nice and light, and the noodles weren't overly thick. The entire bowl was gone within minutes. Wow, amazing spot for Vietnamese food on Kingsway! Very spacious and clean restaurant. Service was attentive. My favorite dish was the beef carpaccio- nice and buttery. Finally brought my Vietnamese sis-in-law to this restaurant! They are always busy and reservations are definitely required for the weekend to avoid a long wait or disappointments. Service - Exceptional, multi-lingual, polite, smiles even at the end of the day. Food - Not overwhelmingly salty like most Viet rests that we've been to. Looooooove their desserts and drinks. Saw a video about this place and wanted to try it out after reading some up and down reviews. Our visit was good though! Loved the bamboo aesthetic inside and noticed that the staff clean the sauce containers so the housemade sauces don't just sit there on the tables for weeks on end. Ordered the rice paper rolls to try out their street food option and it was pretty good. It was filled with dried seafood, egg and pork floss? Then topped with mayo and has a side of a savoury sauce to dip it in. Also tried out their pho with bone marrow in it. We ended up with so much meat in our bowl this way and think we finally found a spot that isn't overloading you with rice noodles. No particular dish was memorable enough for me to want to come back for it, also had the raw beef which I find slightly too sweet for my taste (similar to Pho 37). Their new chicken cold dish was a little dry. Tastes interesting with the smoked flavor though. No wine but only beer served. Parking not the easiest off Kingsway but perhaps they have rear parking spaces available as well, as I saw customers coming in from the back. However, there are so many dishes on the menu likely I will return. Service a little lagging. They are trying to fix the issue with those electric buzzer buttons at every table. When I got home I felt I could still smell the fish sauce on me so a shower is recommended afterwards especially if it's a date night. . One excellent move by the restaurant, they default gratuity % as 10 12 15. Happy to see restaurants not following the so common these days gratuity blackmailing. read more

Love this new Northern Vietnamese addition to Kingsway! We tried the snails in cream sauce (sauce was amazing), garlic butter chicken wings (our favourite), and the dill fish noodle soup (the broth was light but still flavourful). The chicken wings really stood out for me, the light crispy batter was perfect and I was soaking up each wing with that garlic butter sauce. Their menu had some 'coming soon' items like the salted duck egg fried shrimp, as well as other existing items (salted duck egg rice, bun cha, bone marrow beef pho) that I will definitely come back for! When we ordered, we did specify that we have a friend who was allergic to nuts and that they should remove them. It was hilarious to the point that we thought it would be safe for our friend. Salt and Peper Chicken Wings- 7/10 This was delicious, I had so much fun with this. I loved the flavours and it was perfect with the fish sauce as well. Fried Frog Legs with Tamarid- 9/10 I have never knew Frog legs would be THIS delicious!! I have never had frog legs before and this was amazing!! I would say this was the highlight of the place!! Their frog legs were DELICIOUS~!! Grilled Beef Short Ribs with Vermicelli- 8/10 Like all grilled short ribs this wasn't that bad. There wasn't much expectations but this was the dish that almost killed my friend with peanuts. We got another plate of this for the table, and it was delicious. Sea Snails in Sea Salt Egg Sauce- 5/10 I was expecting this to be the high light of our visit but it wasn't that good. The flavours were boring, and the salted egg was lacking.
