Tried this new Vietnamese restaurant in Vancouver which has been receiving great reviews with a friend. The experience was great overall! They have a great varieties from salad, appetizer to pho and drinks. The portion was generous. The server provided recommendations patiently when we asked. The seating was very comfortable with air conditioning. I had this Crab and Shrimp Tropical Noodle Soup which was only available on the weekends. Seasoned right. Lots of shrimp and crab, plus char siu and quail eggs. Very yummy! My friend's regular beef pho was also delicious. They served either cooked or raw bean sprouts, basil and calamansi. The garlic butter fried chicken wings were a must reorder. So crispy outside while juicy inside. The flavour was very nice with or without the dipping sauce. I'll try their fish sauce flavour and lemongrass salt and pepper next time. Their salad rolls were very fresh. Their dipping sauce adds another layer of flavour to the chicken wings and the salad rolls. It's great place to hang out with friends and family. I've heard good things about this spot and went to visit their newly re-opened space! It was a recommendation from the staff and it came with pork skewers, betel beef wraps, spring rolls, and it had vermicelli and herbs/dipping sauce on the side. The meat had really delicious grilled flavours, and I particularly enjoyed the betel beef wraps. We liked that the spring roll has taro in it and it was perfectly crispy. The noodle soups satisfied our cravings and were both tasty. We enjoyed the Beef Noodle Soup more as we felt that the broth had more depth. Other places have better Bun Rieu though. [[HIGHLIGHT]]the servers are genuinely friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere feels warm and lively.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] the menu is modern, with some interesting and unexpected dishes and ingredients that go beyond the usual classics. the pho was solid and comforting, with rare beef, brisket, beef balls, bean sprouts, lime, and thai basil, a well balanced broth that hits all the right notes. they did forget to bring out the bean sprouts, lime, and basil at first, but this was immediately rectified once we flagged a server down. i would personally prefer if the bean sprouts were blanched. but overall, the pho was satisfying. the real standouts were the crispy garlic butter wings and the banh khot. the wings were addictive, with a golden, crunchy coating and a generous topping of crispy garlic that added an incredible aroma and flavour. the banh khot was beautifully done, small, crisp rice flour pancakes made rich with coconut milk and topped with tender shrimp. each bite offered a mix of textures: crispy on the outside, soft and creamy inside, and full of the fresh, fragrant taste of herbs. when wrapped in lettuce with herbs and dipped into the nam pla, it became the perfect combination of savoury, sweet, and tangy flavours. they now have a liquor license, and the beers are nice and cold. the avocado shake is thick and creamy, and they will also accommodate for lactose intolerance. First visit to Hai Chi Em's new digs since re-locating from Fraser Street. Service was okay but wish they'd give a teapot for the table. Mains are $17.00-$28.00. Shared a bun bo hue ($19.00), hu tieu bo kho ($19.00) and mien cua tay cam ($28.00). Both noodle bowls came out piping hot. BBH had good depth, tasty meats. Heard there was this new Vietnamese restaurant out in Vancouver Kingsway and decided to give it a try as I'm always up for some good vietnamese eats. The restaurant is more on the fusion side with a mix of non-traditional dishes and your pho, vermecilli and rice dishes. Our table tried the Spicy Beef noodle soup, crab fried rice, and fried chicken wings. Everything was good but I felt it lacked a bit of the traditional flavours and punch that you get from the less fancy, traditional mom and pop vietnamese restaurants. Pho was alright in flavour and had a good amount of protein. The crab fried rice could use a bit more flavour but I was surprised how much crab meat there was in rice! And the fried chicken wings was a fun dish but I didnt really enjoy the batter texture - there was something different about it that didn't really work but I really liked the dip it came with. The staff were nice and was very on it for their dish clearing and cleaning of tables even when it wasn't busy and no one was waiting. A few times they took away our side plates while we were still eating our meals. And it was a bit odd they started to spray the tables to clean before we left. Maybe a little more training will help in that area. A great restaurant to try out, but I can't say it's one that will linger in mind to keep me going cause there wasn't one key dish that made me keep wanting more unfortunately. read more

This is my favorite Pho place, I think it has the best Pho in the city. The broth is clear and hearty and the cuts of beef are quality cuts and they don't skimp on them either. I tried their first location on Fraser St and just ordered takeout from their new location on Kingsway. The new location is bigger but pretty much has the same layout. The girl who took my order was nice and friendly. I've also tried their salad rolls, pomelo salad, the chicken wings and the fried squid, they were all good. There is street parking out front but you'll have to read the signs, I'm sure at certain times you won't be able to park there (bus lane 3-6). Service was efficient and our teas refilled multiple times. They have the music bumping like you're in a club. Doesn't gel with the vibe. 29 items on the menu consisting of noodle soup & stir fry, appetizers, rice and salads. Tuesday's are 15% off all day. - Herbs - basil, bean sprouts, cabbage and lemon wedges. - Pho hai chi em (#1) ($17.00) - broth was clean but light. Beef slices were slightly overcooked. - Bun bo hue (#2) ($19.00) - best dish of the evening. BBH had good flavour and a nice variety of meats. Not the best in town but good enough. - Lemongrass chicken & spring roll vermicelli bowl (#10) ($18.00) - chicken was tender but lacked flavour. Did not detect much lemongrass. - Seafood pineapple fried rice (#23) ($25.00) - decent amount of shrimp and squid but again, no flavour. Rice was nicely fried and I detected some galangal & lemongrass notes. - Stir fry glass noodles with crab meat (#18) ($24.50) - couple chunks of crab but the meat was bland. Tried this newish Vietnamese spot today while catching up with a girlfriend and really enjoyed it! I'm usually not big on more modern or upscale Vietnamese (not a fan of the Bib Gourmand spot on Main or District Eleven lol) but Hai Chi Em's dishes are well executed, generously portioned, and full of flavour. Between us, we shared the lemongrass salt and pepper wings, pomelo and pork belly salad, fried squid in fish sauce (MP) and the crab fried rice. The salad was so refreshing and well balanced - there were big chunks of pomelo and salty pork belly lightly dressed in a fish sauce vinaigrette. Some prawns and crispy prawn crackers added textural contrast to make a great starter. The wings were big and meaty and just smothered in garlicky crumb. A little dip in the lemon juice with S&P and we had the perfect bite. Our server recommended the fried squid over the crispy mushrooms and it was delicious! The squid itself was nicely battered and tossed in fish sauce, but what really set it apart was the dipping sauce. It was tangy, herbaceous and savoury - everything you'd want in a condiment. I ended up drizzling it over all the other food because it was so tasty. The server mentioned they may sell this in the future and I'd definitely scoop up a bottle or two. Lastly, we had the crab fried rice as per her recommendation and it was well done. Big chunks of crab meat, tobiko and crispy garlic were generously integrated into the rice. Perfect for a filler item. Despite being the only waitstaff, the owner (I believe) did a great job at checking up on us and attending to all the tables during the lunch rush. I'll definitely be back and I'd recommend Hai Chi Em to anyone looking for a nicer Vietnamese option that also delivers on taste. read more

Yum! We have been looking for a close by Vietnamese place for awhile and most places are average and the usual. Our friends recommended this place and absolutely love it. The service is good and prices are a bit on the higher side but quality is there. I hope their portions and quality don't ever depreciate like many restaurants have done. We had the beef stew with rice noodles - packed with a ton of flavour, thick and heart warming. A little hear but not too much. Generous chunks of tender beef and carrots. You must try the crab fried rice. Very generous with REAL crab meat. There's some crunchy bits that I'm not sure what it is but just added a nice texture to the rice. Also tried the lemongrass chicken wings and so good. Full of flavour and crispy crunch! My only qualm is the music was really loud and felt like club music. It is great to see some of the Vietnamese dishes beyond pho and the usual suspects make an appearance in Vancouver. We had the Pomelo Salad, Crab Fried Rice, Beef Fried Crystal Noodles (rice noodles), and Goat Curry. All of the dishes were on point, not a miss anywhere. I've spent a lot of time in Asia and these dishes were the authentic taste. The dishes are large. We shared the four dishes between three people and took about 1/3 of it home (not wasting this food!). read more

Staff were friendly and helpful. Beef noodle soup - nice light broth. Served with lots of cilantro and green onions and chives and onions. Meat quality was decent. Deep fried squid in fish sauce, - batter was definitely more "hard" than the dim sum counterpart. The squid pieces basically fell out of the batter "mold" when I bit into the thing. Nice golden orange colour. As mentioned before, pricing is definitely on the higher end. Checked out the very underrated @haichi_em and was very impressed !! They had some unique dishes that I haven't seen in the Lower Mainland including goi bo bop thau (beef salad, v nostalgic from my childhood ), crab fried rice (com cua tay cam), and fried king oyster in garlic butter (nam bao ngu chien gion). We tried the following: 1 Pomelo Shrimp & Pork Salad $20 2 Deep Fried Squid in Fish Sauce $20 3 Bun Cha Ca $18.50 4 Lemongrass Calamansi Black Tea $8 The Pomelo Shrimp & Pork Salad was done SO well. The sauce, choice of ingredients, portioning of ingredients - chef's kiss Not to mention the addition of the black sesame banh trang because it's one of my fave snacks . Loved this place! We saw someone's IG reel about this place and it convinced us to go. I particularly loved the chicken noodle soup. So flavourful and the chicken was perfect! You also gotta order the crispy butter fried tofu and wings. We didn't end up ordering pho but we'd come back here and reorder the dishes we had. The place isn't that big, but we had a party of 16 people and they were able to accommodate us in 2 tables of 8. The service was fairly quick for when we went (Saturday at 6pm). I've been to the restaurant twice and it's fairly new. The first time the food was good. Most standard Vietnamese fare but the taste was above standard. I had a prawn vermicelli which had 6 spiced prawns (not hot for those of us who like hot) and my friend and I had the savoury prawn coconut pancakes (small little boats) which were unique and very tasty. The second time, I arrived early and there was maybe one other table. They sat me and then completely ignored me as I waited for my friend. I wanted a drink but no one came by and I had to call out to someone. My friend had the pork salad which he loved. I had salad rolls which weren't anything different than any other restaurant. I also had the savoury pancakes again. They were tasty but not as good as the first time. When we left, I forgot my umbrella. I subsequently called for 2 weeks with no one answering the phone or getting back to me on my messages. When I finally reached someone of course they didn't have my umbrella. They lose an extra point for poor customer service and a phone number that's all but useless. read more

I wouldn't say there's anything special about this place. They are new and the flavours weren't anything that would separate them from my go to pho places. One thing that bothered me was when the staff brought out their own food that they ate in the restaurant with the customers. I asked what it is they were eating (even though I already knew). She said it was bahn khot. I asked if it was on the menu because it looked really good. Very disappointing to hear that it wasn't. I get that the kitchen is small and sometimes staff need to eat out front with the customers. Very refreshing, it comes with pork and shrimp. The sweet and juicy pomelo, the overall seasoning is sour and sweet. You can eat with the fried shrimp crisp. Fried Crab Rice It has real crab meat and tastes very good although it looks ordinary. Lemongrass Chicken I ordered an add on, but I did not feel the taste of lemongrass ... Came here for lunch on a Saturday. It's a new, nicely decorated spot. All pay parking in this area now. The restaurant was pretty empty besides one large group. Lots of space for groups of all sizes. We came here to be honest as default because the other 2 restaurants that were either closed or cash only. We parked right in front of Hai Chi, so why not. Inside was new, modern, nicely decorated and very clean. The customer service was absolutely great. The person who greeted us(possibly the owner) was super friendly and very helpful in helping us decide what to order as the menu is a little different than your typical pho restaurant. I had the herbal chicken soup, and it was a nice change than what i am used to, but it was a little too sweet for my liking but it was still very tasty and good, but again, maybe just not for my pallet. However the broth was nice and clean, flavorful and had a lot of chicken. My favorite item that we tried was the crispy garlic chicken wings. The flavor was bold and so comforting. This I would order again. Actually, my other favorite item I had was thie avocado shake. Usually other restaurants dilute it down with alot of ice, making you feel a little ripped off, but this shake..I meant to bring home but it was so good, and creamy and perfectly sweet, I ended up finishing it at the table before I left. The service was excellent, they are always very attentive about fulfilling your needs, while not interrupting, and offering more than you ask for. The restaurant is very clean and sleek and the ambience is very comforting. One of our favorite dishes is the pomelo salad that is served with crackers. It has such a complex mix of a variety of intensity in flavors and is a very popular and addictive dish. I hope the owner would consider my review increase the size a bit to bring more customers in and encourage people in the hood to do a take out order, considering it is located in a family budget neighborhood. It is not easy to survive there and there are many restaurants with with reasonable price and bigger portion on Fraser Street. Excited to try this new place out, so came with a friend one Saturday night. Between us we ordered the beef pho, crab fried rice and garlic butter tofu. I was really impressed that the crab fried rice contained a generous portion of real crab flesh and was absolutely delicious. The garlic butter tofu was equally divine, silky and delicate with a beautiful crispy skin, perfectly seasoned with garlic, which I enjoyed eating on its own. My friend really enjoyed her serving of pho, which had a very healthy serving of beef. The menu is well varied offering great choices of seafood, meat, rice, noodles, sharing plates etc. All very reasonably priced and fast friendly service. It's obvious that this family run restaurant prioritizes on quality prducing honest comfort food enriched with traditional flavours and executed with much love and care. Warm restaurant, both as a lovely reprieve from a cold December night, as well as the friendly service. Our servers welcomed us with hot tea and were very helpful with the menu and offering suggestions. We were a party of eight and tried many of their dishes, which were different from the traditional choices. I particularly enjoyed the garlic butter chicken wings, beef salad and wrapped seafood rice noodle. Everything was very fresh, and had complex flavours, especially with the homemade dipping sauces.
