I went in to buy super glue to fix the handle on my handbag. I wasn't sure if it would work but I figured it was worth a shot. Now, instead of simply selling me the super glue, the guy asked me about what I was trying to fix. I told him and ask if he would take a look at the bag. He said that the super glue might not be the best option because it would ruin the bag. He proceeded to inspect the area of concern earnestly sought to find another solution. What I admired most was his attentiveness to my problem and his dedication to helping me find a solution. He was very polite and even friendly and provided stellar customer service. These guys are great! I received a loveseat I ordered online (elsewhere) which was delivered with entirely wrong hardware to affix the feet at its base. Rather than haggle with the furniture company's customer service over the phone and wait another week or so to receive a replacement pack of hardware, which may or may not have even been right, I decided I'd find a hardware store in my new neighborhood to hopefully buy the bolts and washers needed for the loveseat. The max $5 it would cost had to be well worth my time and sanity, right? I found Garber's online and went over with one of the furniture feet and explained the problem to them. They identified the appropriate items I would need swiftly and easily, and I also got spare keys for my new apartment cut while I was there. Super-friendly, fast and knowledgeable staff, plus a great selection of other goods in a neat and organized environment. They also have an adorable store chocolate lab dog! So glad I found them and grateful for their help solving the problem - I will definitely be a returning customer. read more

This is the hardware store closest to me, so I go there frequently. I'm surprised to see so many comments about the rudeness of the employees! But, come to think of it, I've experienced that, too, and on quite a few occasions. The older guy with the moustache is no Mr. Personality. He usually just looks at you with no expression. But, the guy who sometimes has a dog with him is often friendly, and the last time I was in there, the guy who waited on me (a different one) was helpful in the extreme, offering to let me know when something I was looking for came in. Yesterday's visit to Garbers will be my last. I've been patronizing this store for 25 years, and have watched it go from a helpful, friendly business to one filled with rude people, who seek to demean and humiliate you for the transgression of asking where the nails are or for help with particular screw type. Their service not only sucks, but they are mean. The first few times this happened, I chalked it up to someone having a bad day, and my nostalgia for the neighborhood store trumped their behavior. No more - they simply don't care, and as my experience shows, are not very knowledgeable anyway. I called the store late, 7PM. They were open! The guy answered my call was very nice and gave a sense of we are ready to help and serve you anytime but I told him I might not be able to come tonight. Then, I heard his disappointment from his voice. The location is close so I decided to rush over there. I walked into a nice size hardware store that was on 8 Ave & Jane for many years. I didn't know they moved here. Already lived in with dust all over the store seemed to have everything you need for a quick fix for home. The blond man took me to the back area and he picked up one from the display and assured me it should fit. When I looked at it, the size looked different, smaller. but it was in a tight sealed package but this nice guy assured me. I doubtfully paid to the tall man cashier (owner?) and asked him to recheck it for me. He glanced it and said it is the one. I asked if it doesn't fit, could I bring it back? He immediately replied and said "NO!" Coming to a local store is convenient and give a satisfaction of helping local businesses but "no returns" policy wasn't easy to accept. This smaller looking thing miraculously fits perfectly. I definitely check this store before heading to Home Depot next time. After seeing many stores had gotten out of the Village over the years, GH are still serving the neighbors. I have lived in the West Village for quite some time and have been patronizing this store for years go there instead of Home Depot. I just got off the phone with a very very rude person which after I have read many reviews is typical of this store. I called them - as a courtesy - to let them know that it is possible that my credit card was hacked at their store since it was the last charge on this particular credit card (June 7). The person only seemed to question the reason for the call and was borderline belligerent instead of being helpful. I suggested that he contact his credit card clearing house - clearly he had no idea what I was talking about- at which point he inferred that I did not know what I was talking about and realized that he was totally disinterested. I had over 200 charges on my account that fortunately were rejected by my credit card company but you would think that he would have shown some concern instead of his absolute arrogance. One of the oldest, and best, hardware stores in Manhattan. They stock hard to find goods, and will order things not in their inventory by request. The staff is beyond congenial. I've learned a ton about home improvement with their help. Even electrical, which I used to be afraid to touch. We've been shopping at Garber's since moving to the neighborhood in 1997. Tom just spent the better part of an hour helping me solve a particularly impossible problem involving cutting a tiny piece of glass to fit a very irregularly shaped metal frame. Allen wrench type screws of .050 were also involved. There was no charge for Tom's time or trouble. The dark haired woman who I believe is a manager/owner is so incredibly rude and condescending to both customers and her staff. She must be miserable and take her shortcomings out on other people or something. She's so open and careless about it, I literally wondered for a second if I was on that ABC show "What Would You Do?". Two guys who were working there seemed normal and tried to help me in the morning, but the tool that we all thought would work didn't. The tool wasn't damaged and didn't show any signs of use at all, and I wanted to simply exchange it for one we knew would do the trick. The guys unfortunately gave me bad advice, but I thought it would have worked too. Wasn't a big deal. But she was so determined not to offer the exchange, she was incredibly condescending, and I noticed one of the employees bolted for the back when I mentioned that they told me it would work, and she openly ridiculed the other guy in the nastiest tone for not managing the line quickly enough. Every time I've gone in the store the guy she ridiculed has listened to me and taken the time to try and help me. He's 10x the employee that she is, but I guess she's part owner or something but because no one would otherwise give her power. She looks fairly young so I'm guessing she inherited the store. The customers seemed completely relaxed and chatting, no one was stressed but her. I finally got the exchange and she flippantly handed me the receipt, I said "thank you", and responded "whatever". I feel bad for the guys working there, but I'll never step foot in that store again. The screws and plumbing section rivals any professional spot for supplies, and they always seem to have varying cuts of lumber and fasteners. This is a prime example of a top-notch family business that should be patronized. If you're able to survive in a neighborhood like West Village, then you're doing something right. I've been coming to Garber's for years and have nothing but praise. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful and can help you find what you're looking for, and also often suggest options when you're stuck. On those rare instance when they don't have what I'm looking for, they've always been able to direct me to another merchant who might have what I need. (This only happens when I'm looking for something obscure or very outdated.) They're a bit out of the way, on Greenwich STREET (not Avenue), but if you live in the West Village or lower Chelsea then that's really not much of a schelp. Definitely worth the trip, and absolutely positively recommended over Home Depot as your first choice for all your hardware needs. read more

Rudest people hiring younger ruder people Have been going here under duress, but its my neighbourhood store. I went in to try and get some help putting a toy back together with a screw. He spent about 4 minutes grinding original screw and threw one at me and I said its not catching, it just keeps going and round, so wrong size. He went off to help another customer get keys cut who was after me and I waited a bit longer, then I looked at the owner manager and asked if they were finished with helping me. The young guy in the hat and glasses WENT OFF HIS NUT AT ME, yelling at me how I was taking up his valuable time for a 15 cent screw and there are people waiting. I looked at the manager for help, he said 'well he tried to help you and he cant, whadda ya want' I stood there in absolute shock!! I can not believe how I was treated as a 2.5 year customer. Yelling! I am 62, not young and beautiful enough for the West Village? I don't have a clue how to fix this, and was only asking for help. One screw in the entire store, and there was not another to try? I left in tears at the barbarian attitude of both younger and managing/owner staff. What in the world is happening to people? I can tell you I am in customer service, and never, have I ever, in all my life been treated like this! Please, walk a little farther, get some help from another source. Let me start by saying, I'm not normally a handywoman / fixit person etc. However, I really enjoy shopping at Garber. The guys behind the counter a friendly, down to earth, and very knowledgable. Even though I clearly don't belong in this crowd, they're super helpful and go out of their way to make sure that I get what I'm looking for. I think the prices are pretty comparable to Home Depot and I'd rather spend my dollars with a locally owned business than a chain. If you can (and live close by) - go to Garber instead of home depot. I will start with the positives as there are very few. They are two minutes from my house, have a good selection and they are one of the last few family-owned businesses in the West Village. Now for the negatives. The staff are extremely rude, arrogant and downright insulting. They WILL be condescending because it's just in their nature and it has happened to me on more than one occasion. My last visit I was trying to exchange an item WITH a receipt. The two men behind the counter took turns insulting me, telling me I had no common sense and TRIED to make me feel stupid (unsuccessful I might add). There was a third guy behind the counter who kept quiet and I believe he did so because he was so mortified on how two men could speak to a women the way the other two did. I believe the "other two" are the owners (father and son). Needless to say, I am going to Home Depot from now on. Pretty much whatever you need you will find for ur basic supplies. Whatever you can't, they can order it for you or they tell u where to get it. Good on exchanges and returns too. During Sandy they placed a generator outside so ppl cud charge devices. And considering the pricing in th area, everyone has to deal w th horrific rent exploitation, the prices are reasonable and there are bargains too. read more

Been here a few times to pick up various items like wood stain markers, extension cords, cheese cloth, dimmers, plugs, connectors and plywood.The staff is usual friendly and offer to order items you need that aren't in stock,which occasionally happens. The store is petite and crammed but carries a lot of handy stuff for work. Prices are reasonable. Overall its an alright place to pick up what you need to get a job done. read more

I purchased shades and they were improperly cut and did not fit my window. When returned the next day for a return or re-cut or some customer satisfaction...the proprietor of the store actually said, "I do not have time for you and these shades. I'll look at this later." When I persisted that I needed the shade that I paid for he then said "I don't believe you." I persisted. He then measured the without given the satisfaction of realizing that I was correct, he offered a partial refund. His unprofessional belligerence was astounding.
