Very convenient Hardware Store that opens even on Sundays, they have a large selection of everything you could possibly need to fix an emergency problem (such as mine, my bathroom flooded horribly on a Sunday Morning). However on a recent weekend visit, they took they time to assist me on building my own hanging lamp--all while not making me feel rushed or a nuisance. Looking for Terro Ant Bait products in New York is like looking for the holy grail. It's a long slog with many false turns and disappointments. You have to make the journey far to the west to discover lovely Greenwich Street and Garber Hardware. This is what a hardware store should be, a little of everything you could possibly want, need or find interesting. I ended up with my Terro, plus key rings (5 sizes available) and a kitchen strainer (3 sizes available).. People behind the counter are friendly, helpful and happy to be there offering service. Garber Hardware is the store I would create if I were in the business: stocked with items you forgot you needed, manned by knowledgeable people ready and eager to solve your problem. This store is a great reason to support local businesses. I needed to have a piece of plastic cut, and the staff was polite and able to complete the cut within seconds at no charge. I still left a few dollars largely because when I called two larger stores they immediately dismissed me saying they couldn't help at all with no suggestion on where else to go. The store also has a good assortment of items including cleaning products that were organized in a way easier to locate quickly than other big box stores all at reasonable prices. More stringent policies than megastores, but twice the price: Look, I know it's "cool" to shop at a so-called family business that doesn't look corporate. We West Village folk love to pay through the nose to to "support" our little neighborhood places because in return, we get a whole lot of customer service and love back from them, right? Right? Say it is so!! I mean that's why everybody here is tripping all over themselves to endorse this store, right!? It feels so warm and fuzzy to buy local and get all this so-called "personal service" in return, right? Well, while I agree that the pre-sale customer service is good here (there are usually more employees hanging around than customers), when you come back to return an item, you get NO LOVE back for paying double the Home Depot price in the first place. Today I wanted to return an item that had some optical blemishes that could be wiped off with a wet rag in 2 minutes. First, this indifferent hipster clerk offered me a store credit to which I agreed. Then 5 minutes later he came back saying he changed his mind and won't accept the return because there's some schmutz here and there on the item. These guys want it both ways: They charge West Village convenience store prices (easily double Home Depot), but their corporate policies after the sale do not one bit reflect that premium price you pay, and betray the friendly "mom & pop" face they're putting on before the sale. Look, if you just need some nails and screwdrivers and you know you're not going to need any unbureaucratic courtesy help when something doesn't fit or isn't quite what you wanted, by all means go here. It's a well-known amateur marketing tactic practiced now by the most devious businesses in the world, to promote themselves as "family"... ...but when you later need to cash in on that family promise, suddenly "Uncle Garber" insists on corporate policies more so than any corporate megastore. (These megastores, ironically, understand that good will is an asset and after this incident, Home Depot feels more like "family" to me than Garber). My recommendation if you need buy something more involved than a hammer: Pass. Shop online first, then go to Home Depot or some such place... even with cab fare from the West Village to the 23rd St Home Depot, you will come out ahead. read more

Well, I've been a customer for years, but today I had a business ending encounter when going to return a package of screws that were the wrong size. I was scolded at like why am I wasting their time, and was spoken to rudely by the younger condescending degrading dick that's always there. He threw my credit card back to me after grudgingly making the return of $5.75. Must be kidding me to be treated like crap like this, and it really is a disgusting way to run a neighborhood business. read more

If surly, bad service is what you are looking for, you have found the place. Every time I go in there, the employees barely look up, let alone ask if they can help you. "What do you think this is, a service?" the owner said to me today. Clearly, Garber's does not think they are in the service business. They are rude, unhelpful, and disrespectful. The oldest, rudest, least helpful, and most expensive hardware store in the village. Keep your receipts because you are in for a battle to return the smallest item with their price tag on it. Blaustein on Bleeker is better in every way. read more

Garber's is one of the best (and many) perks of living in the West Village. I love this store. It is so convinient and friendly. Worst service ever, 2 minutes after leaving the store we realized we got the wrong size tool and they didn't let us change it. It was completely unused so we got the other one as well. It was only 5 dollars but they could easily sell the first one and for us it's just a waste. read more

i love to support small businesses. in fact, i rarely go to big box stores. i have had TWO of the most horrific experiences at this hardware store. i have never written a yelp review in the past, but i had to let people know how horrible the service is at garber! a few week ago, i went into the shop and asked for assistance in selecting an item. the guy was beyond rude and would not answer my simple question. he walked away and literally slammed an office door in my face. i told the other owner and he apologized for his brother's actions. i figured the guy was just having a bad day and decided to still patronize this shop...UNTIL TODAY! i phoned to inquire about a specific product before i made a trip to the store. the guy told me they have many sizes and it's not a problem. i then asked him to be specific and check the sizes for me. it turns out they didn't have the size i needed. instead of being gracious about being wrong he literally HUNG UP on me when i told him that's why i needed him to check the sizes. i was shocked and immediately phoned back and said "are you kidding that you just hung up on me" and he responded, "we don't have what you need" and proceeded to hang up on me again. it may be the same guy as the previous experience, but i'm not sure. regardless, this place is over! i wouldn't buy a screw here. they have been around for a long time, but it will not stay that way with customer service like this. i already told the head of my large building and he is no longer patronizing garber. they need to take this problem seriously. read more

Great "old fashion" hardware and paint store. I had plumbing issues twice over the past year and on both occasions they had the tool or item to fix the problem. It is a pleasure walking in the store and I love the new counter locations. read more

Garber's is a HARDWARE STORE, Not Sak;s Fif th Avenue. They know their stuff whether it is some tiny small screw from an old old apartment that needs replacing to know-how on repairing replacing this or that. They never never let me down even when I make trips back withe yet another plea for advise. And this has been who they are for 20 years I have been fortunate enough to live near their old and now new location. I miss the old gent with the coke bottle glasses who saw me through many requests in our younger years. But Garber's is Garber's and hardware stores don't get better than this. read more

I've been familiar with this hardware store since the old days, when they used to be on 8th Ave, near Horatio St. I've learned to only go there in a pinch, as any keys I've had made there have been problematic, and prices there for paint, brushes, or tools are generally higher than Lowe's or any basic neighborhood hardware store. The older proprietors can be pretty gruff, too. read more
