I feel like I stumbled across a rare find. I was in the area this past weekend and casually wandered into Garden Gate Candy, not knowing anything about them other than what I saw from the street. After doing a little research, I learned that this little sweet shop is only open during November and December to fulfill a mad holiday rush of candy requests. The rest of the year they are napping. The selection of items appeared to be a little on the smaller side-what I had mistaken for caramel apples through the window turned out to be caramel marshmallows. That was a bummer. Most items appear to be gift-ready. I assume that most people don't come here to pick up an impromptu treat while they are out shopping. This is a destination to get your holiday gift baskets/boxes/baggies that carry a strong tradition. I guess I need to step up my neighbor-gift game. read more

At a holiday work party, a colleague shared a box of toffee from Garden Gate in 2019. It was so buttery, and incredible, I found myself longing for more of this special treat. My colleague stated they were only open before the winter holidays-in November and December, and they usually sell out quickly. Since I was too late to this insider knowledge, I was unable to pick up any treats as they were already closed by the time of our holiday party that year. Apparently, they open on November 1st, so I decided to head over to Garden Gate before Thanksgiving to be sure I would be able to purchase some of their amazing candy. Their menu isn't very large, but even after perusing the menu before heading to Garden Gate, seeing all of the candy in person may also sway your decision. I bought several boxes of toffee for gifts, and also multiple bags of the sprinkles, which are basically pieces of toffee that has broken apart into small pieces. Great idea to sell these pieces, and the woman working there suggested putting some on top of some ice cream for a fun treat! I have been also enjoying the sprinkles just plain, when I am craving some chocolate and almonds together, and a small bite of toffee. The sprinkles come in dark or regular milk chocolate (just like their toffee). This is an amazing local treat, and I am so glad I bought some of their amazing chocolaty, buttery toffee for myself to enjoy this holiday season until they reopen in November. read more

Garden Gate is a mysterious candy shop located at 9th and 9th. As soon as you are aware it is open for the season (around the beginning of November), they seem to have closed again! I have heard stories that some years they run out of stock weeks before Christmas, so keep that in mind and plan accordingly! I have had their toffee many times. It is a ubiquitous corporate gift around the holidays, so there is always a box or two hanging around the office. It is crunchy, but on the lighter side, so doesn't break your teeth or get too stuck in 'em. Coated in a thin layer of chocolate, then almonds, it is a classic example of toffee. Nothing particularly notable, but good. They make caramel in addition to the famed toffee, and there are other goodies sold as well, but to be honest, I was less impressed as they are all just chocolate dipped stuff not made in house: marshmallows, pretzels, cinnamon bears, nuts, Oreos. Considering they are full of sugar, I am sure they are tasty enough, but what is special about something I can just buy at the grocery store? I did not know this until I visited the shop, but they offer most everything in both milk and dark - hurrah! Sadly, though, they do not allow you to put together your own box, even though there is a case of loose goodies. This requires the purchase of a full pound of most items, and that is unfortunate, as I would have loved to try a bit of several things. Instead, I selected a dark chocolate bag of toffee clusters. They contain mostly chunks of toffee, with a few whole almonds, and it is basically just like the standard toffee, but with a higher ratio of chocolate. The dark is certainly an improvement over milk, and prepared with a higher quality chocolate, if not an amazing one. These are a fun and creative way to enjoy toffee, and I quite liked them. If they comprised equal parts almonds and toffee, they would have a true hit on their hands. The kind shop girl offered me a sample of anything, so I chose the above cluster, but now wish I had tried their caramel. Most selections are just under $20 a pound for boxed, less for bagged. There is a single space out front marked with a sign for ten minute parking. It was open on my visit, so check there first, but I am sure it will usually be occupied nearer the holidays. This is a busy area, parking along the street is available, you just might have to do some trekking, TL;DR: Garden Gate Candy sells average to slightly above average candies, with only toffee and caramel made in house. They have a passionate customer base that sees them as a requisite holiday tradition, and the limited period they are open creates an allure they might not otherwise sustain. read more

Their customer service is ACES!!! They are so sweet and helpful, in this little baby shop, that I was expecting to be much LARGER, probably because of their reputation, but it is the perfect size, to be able to personally help each patron. There are so many delicious chocolatiers, in the SLC area, that I wouldn't say this place is the BEST, but I definitely would agree that their treats are all delicious and amazing! How do I know...? I got to sample them all, then my friends and I proceeded to buy one of each thing, then share! This is a quaint local chocolate and candy shop in a cool part of SLC. I saw a review of them on social media and it sold me. I was offered a sample of the dark chocolate toffee. Best combinations I have ever eaten. Not nearly enough stars, so naturally I bought some and walked out with a whole lot more. My friends children are going to be quite surprised when I show up with this rate Utah gem from a very historic place. Minimal staff in a Monday but they were all attentive and welcome to answer questions. Only open 6 days a week for 7 hours a day 2 months a year. Get there while you can! read more

They have hands-down, the absolute best toffee in Salt Lake City! And a great group of people who work there.

This place has fabulous toffee clusters and is in a cute shop in the 9th and 9th area. I take off two stars for one of the employees/owner who was at the counter. I asked to purchase a box since the ones I wanted were only available in bags (but oddly enough were on display in the case as individuals next to other ones that could be purchased in boxes). I was told NO she could not sell me a box, without a "sorry or unfortunately" to be polite. There were about 150 empty boxes behind them on the shelves and they are closing down tomorrow? Doesn't make sense. Please be kinder to your customers, as your chocolates are priced higher, your customer service should match. read more

I don't usually enjoy candy. It just isn't my thing. That need for a sweet indulgence is rather pervasive in Utah. It doesn't take Sigmund Freud, Carl Rogers, or Abe Maslow to figure out why. Perhaps Pavlov would be more apropos. Whatever the reason, Garden Gate's toffee is amazing. It is only sold during the holiday season, and the restrictive purchase policy makes the toffee even taste better. I bought six boxes to give as gifts. Hail King Toffee! Long may be your reign! Oops... Open briefly for the Holidays then shuttered when the sweets run dry! Better get here fast. It's apparently an SLC institution since more than one of our neighbors left a sack of GG on our doorstep this year. I would strongly suggest getting some toffee and resting easy. It's an investment at $18/lb. but well worth it. Flavor is deep and unfolds langorously like the word "scrumdidilyumptious," lightly smoky, earthily spiced, and featuring a tactful sweetness. Chocolate coating itself is fine, but with the nut dusting is a knockout. Chocolate almond clusters needed salt IMO, but my wife was over the moon. Friendly service and elegant packaging. read more

Only open for the month of November and December. A real hidden gem. I order multiple boxes from them every year! I found out about this place from my father. Every year he would get a box as a gift! And so I decided to google the name on the box- "Garden Gate" and I ended up finding their number and calling them...and some years later... here I am leaving a review! I wish they would have some online platform or easier way of ordering. But I do like ordering from them because its a family/family friend's run (or so I think) business which has been running for several years. So you must get the pound of toffee covered chocolate with nuts sprinkled on it. I want to let you I get this shipped from Utah to CA... its good and I'm surprised it hasn't been reviewed that much. I got caramel covered chocolate this year and its BOMB. The caramel is not too sweet and the milk chocolate is so delicious. They even do it in dark chocolate. The Salt Lake classic, opened today for another holiday season. Stopping by to get a box of toffee for a gift, which I will not eat as I am allergic to tree nuts, I picked up a few caramels. My opinion is the chocolate is as good or better as Cummings on 700 East and caramel as good or better than V Chocolates. If you never have been there you must stop by. The BEST toffee ever! My mother-in-law gave us a box for Christmas, and WOW, were we pleasantly surprised!
