    Toffee box
    Lacey T.

Garden Gate is a mysterious candy shop located at 9th and 9th. As soon as you are aware it is open for the season (around the beginning of November), they seem to have closed again! I have heard stories that some years they run out of stock weeks before Christmas, so keep that in mind and plan accordingly! I have had their toffee many times. It is a ubiquitous corporate gift around the holidays, so there is always a box or two hanging around the office. It is crunchy, but on the lighter side, so doesn't break your teeth or get too stuck in 'em. Coated in a thin layer of chocolate, then almonds, it is a classic example of toffee. Nothing particularly notable, but good. They make caramel in addition to the famed toffee, and there are other goodies sold as well, but to be honest, I was less impressed as they are all just chocolate dipped stuff not made in house: marshmallows, pretzels, cinnamon bears, nuts, Oreos. Considering they are full of sugar, I am sure they are tasty enough, but what is special about something I can just buy at the grocery store? I did not know this until I visited the shop, but they offer most everything in both milk and dark - hurrah! Sadly, though, they do not allow you to put together your own box, even though there is a case of loose goodies. This requires the purchase of a full pound of most items, and that is unfortunate, as I would have loved to try a bit of several things. Instead, I selected a dark chocolate bag of toffee clusters. They contain mostly chunks of toffee, with a few whole almonds, and it is basically just like the standard toffee, but with a higher ratio of chocolate. The dark is certainly an improvement over milk, and prepared with a higher quality chocolate, if not an amazing one. These are a fun and creative way to enjoy toffee, and I quite liked them. If they comprised equal parts almonds and toffee, they would have a true hit on their hands. The kind shop girl offered me a sample of anything, so I chose the above cluster, but now wish I had tried their caramel. Most selections are just under $20 a pound for boxed, less for bagged. There is a single space out front marked with a sign for ten minute parking. It was open on my visit, so check there first, but I am sure it will usually be occupied nearer the holidays. This is a busy area, parking along the street is available, you just might have to do some trekking, TL;DR: Garden Gate Candy sells average to slightly above average candies, with only toffee and caramel made in house. They have a passionate customer base that sees them as a requisite holiday tradition, and the limited period they are open creates an allure they might not otherwise sustain.

    Samples! Thank you

This Chocolatier is open only during the holidays, November and December, can you believe that!! Their Brittle is delicious and has a great tasty and texture, they also have an assortment of chocolate covered marshmallows with different toppings. See Henry helpful and knowledgeable on their assortment of candies!

Their customer service is ACES!!! They are so sweet and helpful, in this little baby shop, that I was expecting to be much LARGER, probably because of their reputation, but it is the perfect size, to be able to personally help each patron. There are so many delicious chocolatiers, in the SLC area, that I wouldn't say this place is the BEST, but I definitely would agree that their treats are all delicious and amazing! How do I know...? I got to sample them all, then my friends and I proceeded to buy one of each thing, then share! Their toffee clusters and cinnamon bears are my jam, but you literally cannot go wrong with anything there! Honest! Open Nov-Dec, on 9th & 9th, M-Sa 10am-5pm.

Parks and rec reference. But the chocolate covered Oreos were hard to put down

This is a quaint local chocolate and candy shop in a cool part of SLC. I saw a review of them on social media and it sold me. I was offered a sample of the dark chocolate toffee. Best combinations I have ever eaten. Not nearly enough stars, so naturally I bought some and walked out with a whole lot more. My friends children are going to be quite surprised when I show up with this rate Utah gem from a very historic place. Minimal staff in a Monday but they were all attentive and welcome to answer questions. Only open 6 days a week for 7 hours a day 2 months a year. Get there while you can!

Garden Gate Chocolate Almond Toffee! :D It is so good quality of candy!!! What a great gift my family gave me.

It was a Christmas gift to me. I had a broken tooth from other candy. Once i started eating this melt in your mouth heavenly candy i was happy!

They have hands-down, the absolute best toffee in Salt Lake City! And a great group of people who work there.

Ask the Community - Garden Gate Candy

Is this place permanently closed? The inside is empty with boxes.

They are only open seasonally, annually through the holidays. I'm hoping they open soon for the season.

Just wanted to confirm that they are still open on Saturdays, at the same time listed here on Yelp? I didn't noticed Google search says they're closed on both Saturdays & Sundays.

If you're looking for pastries that are as stunning as they are delicious, Fillings & Emulsions…read moreabsolutely delivers. Their fruit-shaped creations are little works of art--so realistic it almost feels wrong to eat them... almost. Each pastry is fresh, light, and packed with flavor. The pistachio was incredibly tasty, though definitely on the richer side, so it's one you might want to savor slowly. The raspberry had a beautifully balanced sweetness with a vibrant, delicious filling. The lemon was very zingy--almost intensely so--but still delightful if you enjoy bold citrus flavors (just maybe not an entire one in a single sitting). The standout, though, was the mango. Easily the winner. It had such a bright, powerful flavor, and the fresh mango inside made every bite feel special. Everything about it--from taste to presentation--was just beautiful. The only slight letdown was the macarons. While still good, they didn't quite match the intensity and uniqueness of the pastries and felt a bit underwhelming in comparison. Overall, this place is a must-visit if you appreciate creative, high-quality desserts. It's clear a lot of skill and care goes into every piece. I loved the building that the pastry shop was in, as it had a "lunch room" feel to it. There are a few restaurants inside so there are options and there's plenty of seating.

The sweet cashier recommended Strawberry & Mango, so that's what we got. They were delicious! I think the mango was my personal favorite. The crunch of the chocolate coating was so satisfying and the fillings soft and gooey. It didn't feel artificial either! The location is in a food mall, which I wasn't expecting but it was so cute inside. I wish we had more time to check out the other vendors but we'll have to come back. On a separate note, it was kind of hard to find a trash can.

We were quoted a 10-15 minute wait despite there being multiple open tables everywhere, which already set the tone. The person at the front also seemed like greeting guests was a personal inconvenience. Not exactly the warm welcome you'd expect from a place trying this hard to look aesthetic. To make things worse, several pastries sitting in the front display were visibly burnt. Not "artisan charred" -- just burnt. The pastries we ordered were actually good, which makes the rest of the menu even more disappointing. We tried the soft scramble, pork cheek tartine, truffle tartine, and mushroom fettuccine. Everything looked beautiful but tasted either burnt, bland, or both. Every toast item arrived burnt enough that you could taste it in every bite. Our server came by often to refill waters and check on us, but the service somehow still felt oddly impersonal. Since the restaurant wasn't busy at all, it also made us wonder how attentive the service would be during an actual rush. Honestly, this place feels more focused on looking trendy than serving good food. Stick to the pastries if you go -- it's the only thing worth ordering.

Everything was delicious- well seasoned and perfect temperature- soft scramble look yummy - the Benedict so good they made it a yummy meatless dish! The eggs poached well and served with peas a really neat compliment to the dish. Mushroom pasta looked very good and I'll have to order it next time. Funghi pizza was excellent- the béchamel was excellent and melody of mushrooms yummy- crust was good a bit dark on the top but bottom crust good. Their chickpea bao buns with chipotle aioli blew me away. It was the perfect level of spicy and very filling without making me feel heavy. Their burritos and fries are my go-to favorites. The burritos are just top-notch, but I have a soft spot for their fries -- it's kind of an inside joke for me. Whenever I go out to eat with people, they always say, "Well, I know what El is having," because I always get fries with my food. But theirs are surprisingly amazing. Fries are usually just "fine" or "good," but theirs? They're very good. The owner is incredibly kind, and their baked goods are fantastic -- especially the peanut butter brownie, which I can't recommend enough. Their soft serve is also really good, and I'm excited to try some of their candy next time. I even took a non-vegan friend there, and he really enjoyed the food. Beyond the food, the team is so nice, and they have a little vegan market with some really cool products. I bought about half a pound of vegan bacon from them, and now I'm making all kinds of breakfast sandwiches at home. If you're in the area, whether you're vegan or not, Sweet Hazel is a must-visit. And if you can't stop by in person, their partner company Break Free Candy ships their sweets, which is awesome. Seriously, if you order anything from the menu, make it the peanut butter brownie. It's life-changing -- and I say that as a huge brownie lover.
