Food 5/5, Service 5/5, Space 2/5. I think it summarizes my opinion well. The food was amazing, the Hainanese Chicken rice was one of the best I've ever had. Service was amazing, too. They helped us rearrange the seats to fit our 2-year-old kid; it was a kind of sacrifice to move one table in their restaurant. Nevertheless, it was only the biggest problem of this restaurant. It was truly too small! It is that popular, it always has a long waiting line. But it only has a tiny space, it only has a few tables, and it felt completely packed. It doesn't mean I don't like it. Just hope they can change a location with bigger space and let more people go in and make more money!
After a disappointing Hong Kong cafe experience last year, we were really hoping to find a better one during our annual Markham trip. A friend recommended three spots, and Garden Hong Kong Cafe was the only one we hadn't heard of. According to her, the Hainanese Chicken Rice was a must-order. Our family of 8 (+1 toddler) arrived a little after 1 PM and put our name down on a long waitlist. The interior is small and cramped, very much your typical hole-in-the-wall Chinese cafe, and there wasn't enough space for all of us to wait inside. Thankfully, the wait was only ~20 minutes before we were seated. The staff was efficient -- our order was taken within 5 minutes of sitting down, and the food arrived just as quickly. R1 招牌海南鸡饭 (SIGNATURE HAINANESE CHICKEN RICE) - 11.50 We ordered three of these since it was highly recommended, and nearly every table had one. The dish arrived on a bamboo-pattern plate with golden, dome-shaped rice, a generous portion of dark-meat Hainanese chicken, and three sauces (sweet soy, chili, and ginger oil). The rice was incredibly fragrant, clearly cooked with chicken fat and juices. The chicken? Phenomenal. It was silky smooth, tender, and so juicy. Easily the most perfectly poached chicken I've had. It was flavorful enough on its own, but the ginger oil added a bright, aromatic kick. This was undeniably the highlight of the meal, and I couldn't stop smiling as I enjoyed bite after bite. It was truly perfect, and I genuinely had no critiques. R3 金牌焗芝士猪扒饭 (BAKED PORK CHOP ON FRIED RICE W/ CHEESE) - 9.95 A generous portion of pork chop and an even more generous amount of rice. The pork was well-baked and flavorful, and the tomato sauce was good, but the rice-to-everything-else ratio was overwhelming. Fine, but not memorable. R8 咖喱牛腩饭 (BEEF BRISKET W/ CURRY ON RICE) - 11.95 The brisket was tender and absorbed the curry well. Flavorful, but again, "does the job" rather than standout. A1 黄金西多士 (HONG KONG STYLE FRENCH TOAST) - 5.99 Thick-cut toast with plenty of crust, topped with small slabs of butter. It was incredibly crispy, nutty, and sweet, with a thin layer of peanut butter inside. I'm not usually a peanut butter fan, but this was good. A3 冰火菠萝油 (PINEAPPLE BUN WITH BUTTER) - 3.75 The bun looked overly toasted and dry at first glance, but tasted much better than it looked. The sugar crust was perfectly crisp, the interior was soft and fluffy, and the slab of butter was generous (maybe a bit too much). Overall, a solid pineapple bun. SET C 沙爹牛肉米粉 (SATAY BEEF RICE NOODLE IN SOUP) - 9.45 Given the cold weather, we wanted something soupy and warm. This set also came with a fluffy egg sandwich. The rice noodles were cooked well and soft, and there was a good amount of beef. Unfortunately, the broth was fairly bland with only a faint hint of satay. All the larger entrees came with unsweetened HK-style milk tea. It was fragrant enough to drink plain, though nothing particularly remarkable. Overall, everything we ordered was above average, but the two items I'd come back for are the Signature Hainanese Chicken Rice and the Pineapple Bun with Butter. This is an easy 5/5, solely because of the chicken rice -- it's the best I've had in North America, and truly something special.
A tiny Hong Kong cafe in the Langham plaza. It's quick service, comforting food, but expect to wait during busy hours. Just note that the parking here in this plaza is always packed and a bit frustrating. Upon entering around 3PM at this cafe, it was still packed with people and we waited around 5 minutes before getting seated. There's no area for you to wait since the cafe is so small, so you're just awkwardly standing by the door and next to patrons. Food is your typical comfort HK cafe food that hits the spot. Got their onion and ginger chicken on instant noodle which was great flavour and tasty. Their HK style peanut butter toast was also great and a classic. Lemon teas and milk teas were also pretty standard. Overall, come here for a quick comfort meal that hits the spot. It's a fast paced in and out restaurant.
I've only came here for one thing, and that's their Hainanese Chicken rice. It's easily one of the best Hainanese chicken dishes in the GTA! The restaurant is small and a little cramped and the staff is pretty friendly but don't speak much English. There usually is a little bit of a wait so make sure you give yourself enough time! Sometimes they sell out of Hainanese chicken for the day, so you can always give the place a call and ask if you want to make sure they have it! we ordered the: Hainanese chicken with rice - $11.85 - Served with their house-made sauces (sauces include a chilli sauce, ginger scallion oil sauce and a sweet soy sauce) - it is absolutely delicious and I highly recommend - 10/10 Check them out and I'm already excited for my next visit!
Latest visit. We got her around 2pm and there was still a small lineup. I like how they added a bench outside for people to sit and wait. The food was exceptional as usual. The curry beef brisket was meaty and no fat. The baked porkchop with tomato sauce and cheese was delicious. The R7 chicken steak and pork chop with onion gravy was our all time favorite. The service here is friendly and the server can communicate in English and Cantonese. If you're looking for some good Hong Kong style cafe food then definitely try this place.
A tiny, tiny HK cafe located at Langham Square. You gotta write your name on the clipboard and wait a good 20-30 min on a "good" day. On a day with peak foot traffic, good luck LOL. You already know what it is. Go-to order hainanese chicken rice with some cold milk tea 0 sugar to wash it all down. You can tell the rice has been cooked in a good amount of chicken oil by how fragrant and delicious it is. The chicken is smooth, juicy and boneless (as all hainanese chicken should be served imo). Comes with triple sauces on the side for dipping. Decent portion size (could be bigger). I heard the french toast and curry beef brisket is supposed to be good. Been meaning to try those but every subsequent visit I default to the chicken rice. If you want to avoid any type of wait here, make sure you get takeout. Only attempt dine-in if you can afford time to kill.
Located in Langham Square in Markham this is another good cha chan teng option. The place is quite small with less than a dozen tables. It's so small that when there is a wait you add your name to a list attached to the clipboard by the front door and then wait outside because it is too cramped and there is no space to wait inside. Menu is good with all the traditional options. Prices are even better. A baked rice is less than $11.00 and comes with a drink. You can get a breakfast combo for $8.99. What was ordered: Beef satay vermicelli (can also choose macaroni) and egg sandwich (breakfast combo) Baked rice with chicken Beef with the vermicelli was a little tough and chewy. Baked rice was good, chicken was a skin on thigh making it very tender. The place is a little small but the service and flavours were okay. Would be worth another visit if in the area.
Small cafe located in Langham square. Finally got a chance to check it out since the last time I want to go the line was too long. This time we got a table fast for not going at prime time (went at 5:30pm). I tried their HK style baked pork chop rice, egg&spam sandwich and scallion ginger chicken. The egg and spam sandwich wasn't that great.m but both rice dishes tasted really good and hit the spot for hk cafe food cravings.The service was fast. We saw lots of people order Hainanese chicken rice there so I'll def go back to check it out one day.
They're known for their Hainanese chicken so that's what we ordered. The chicken was tender and flavorful (and boneless!) and the rice was very fragrant. It comes with the 3 sauces that the dish is typically served with and I liked the sweet soy sauce the most. The red chili sauce was a bit spicier than the ones I've had at other restaurants. The Hainanese chicken order also comes with a very tasty HK-style milk tea. Great deal! Note: the restaurant is very small so expect a wait for a table or just order to-go like we did.
First time here and I really enjoyed it. Got lucky and was able to get a table fairly fast. The place was small. The service was quite fast as what we ordered really started to come fast. However they do state that you have a time limit as they get quite busy. I really tried many things on the menu and the menu is pretty large. I really enjoyed the Hainanese chicken. The oil rice I really enjoyed. Had good flavor and not salty. The instant noodles and Mac soups were nice. I enjoyed the pineapple butter beard warm and tasty. So many more things on the menu and will really need to try it all.
When we went to Hong Kong a few years ago, one of the most memorable dishes we ate was a noodle concoction swimming in a rich, delicious cheese sauce. So when we discovered that Garden Hong Kong Cafe was serving something that sounded very similar, we knew we had to try it. We showed up on a Saturday just a few minutes after they opened and the place was already full, so we put our name on their waiting list and came back in about 20 minutes. Obviously I had to order the Cheese Sauce Instant Noodle w/Swiss Chicken Wings, which came with a cup of hot Milk Tea. It's a decent dish, although it didn't remind me much of that one we ate in Hong Kong. The cheese sauce has been applied very sparingly, so the dish isn't as decadent as I might've anticipated. However, when mixed together with the sauce at the bottom of the bowl (and with a very liberal application of the table chili oil), this is quite satisfying and surprisingly filling. The chicken wings are fine but pretty superfluous. I don't think I would ever order this dish again, but I would definitely return to try one of their delicious-looking sandwiches.

I've walked past this place many times and it always has a long line, so when we finally saw an empty table, we decided to give it a try. It was my first time here, and the experience started off on the wrong foot. I had barely sat down, not even 30 seconds, before a staff member was already hovering over us trying to take our order. I hadn't even had a chance to look the menu yet, which immediately made things feel rushed and uncomfortable. The space itself is quite small, and they won't let smaller groups of two people or fewer sit in the booths, which adds to that cramped and slightly stressful atmosphere. There's people hovering nearby watching if you're almost done. Overall, the entire dining experience felt rushed from start to finish. The food is cheap, I'll give them that, but unfortunately the quality reflects that. I ordered a sandwich and it was sloppily put together. The bread slices were not even aligned properly, where the top slice and bottom slices were in opposite directions, making it so you couldn't pick it up. Flavour-wise, I was hoping for more of a Hong Kong cafe style satay beef, but this wasn't it. The curry was okay, with some decent chunks of meat and potato, but nothing particularly memorable. What really left a bad impression was the payment experience. Their debit machine defaults to 12%, 15%, or 18% tips calculated after tax, with no upfront notice or custom option. Tipping is not mandatory in Canada, and it should be up to the customer based on service. When we asked about it, the response felt as if we were being made to feel cheap over "just a few cents". Honestly it is not about the amount, it is about principle. If you are just looking for a quick and cheap bite, this place might do the job. But considering the long lines and how rushed the experience is, you might end up waiting longer than you actually get to sit and eat. Personally, I will not be coming back. I would rather get takeout or dine somewhere that lets you actually relax and enjoy your meal. read more

Newly renovated, and was half full, my family decided to get takeout for dinner. I got the hainanese chicken with rice, their baked pork chop rice with cheese, and curry brisket with rice; all orders came with drinks and I got their cold lemon tea. Orders were ready within 10-15 minutes. Baked pork chop rice was mediocre at best. Wasn't that good, some pieces of pork were tender and some were tough, rice had very little to no flavour. Hainanese chicken was delicious! Chicken was tender, rice has a nice flavour and you can tell they use the chicken broth they cooked the chicken to cook their rice. Comes with 3 sauces. Curry beef brisket was my favourite. Beef brisket was tender, the tender potatoes soaked up the curry sauce, and the curry was flavourful with a hint of spiciness. Lemon tea is good, but you really need to smash down the lemon to get that lemony taste. Will come back just for the curry beef brisket and hainanese chicken. read more

I've been ordering at this place so many times in the past and I finally decided to give them a review which is certainly late. This place is usually my go tos especially when I'm around the area. This cafe is located in Langham Sq plaza, which parking can be a pain as there's not a lot of parking spots. It's a very small cafe with just a few tables and it's always so busy so I usually just do take out. Prices are very good compared to other HK cafes but they offer mostly rice dishes over noodles. I ordered baked pork chop on fried rice with tomato sauce, pan fried chicken steak with egg on rice, hong kong style French toast which is the afternoon tea for $4.95 and it comes with coffee or tea. Their French toast is bomb, it totally hits the spot especially when you're craving for HK food. Will certainly come back again! read more

Always recommend their signature Hainanese Chicken Rice to my friends!! The Curry Beef Brisket also reminded me the taste of Service of staffs is very Hong Kong style and it reminds me of HK restaurant! The decorations are really cool but the seats are little, you may avoid to visit there in busy hours. read more

I have heard that this cafe has one of the best Hainanese chicken rice, and being a huge lover of that dish, we were always hesitant to go as there's always a long lineup regardless of the day and time, but I had enough of anticipation and I have to check out the hype. The cafe is located along the shops of the parking lot at Langham Square (hwy 7/ kennedy), and the unit is SMALL and narrow for a cafe. They can only occupy maybe 25 people max, so you will have to write your name and number of people in your party on the clipboard provided, and just hoover around the area and wait for your name to be called. We waited about 30-45 mins for a table for 2. We ordered the Hainanese chicken rice, the special set C with satay beef vermicelli and ham sandwich, and their signature pineapple bun with butter... all very common yet classic HK dishes that you can find at most HK cafes. Once you place your order, the food arrives at a decent time that one can consider as fast. The Hainanese chicken was soft and tender without being too oily, dipping into the sweet soy sauce, chili, and minced ginger was PERFECT! The rice portion was quite large yet full of chicken oil flavour. Each piece of beef has a strong satay flavour, and is tender for soup vermicelli. The ham sandwich that came with the set was very soft with a hint of butter, just the way I had when I grew up in HK. The pineapple bun was soft, with its signature crunchy top... nothing too special about it. Overall, will I come back? As much as I would love to, with the size of the restaurant and how crowded it gets, no. But will I get their Hainanese chicken rice via pick-up or delivery services? YES! read more

Came back for round 3, because why not. Still cheap, fast and decently quality food, but drop in rating is mainly due to in consistency, or maybe dissapointment to my expectations. Swiss style wings and instant noodles - honestly did not know what to expect with this dish. Essentially soy sauce braised chicken wings, chinese style cheese with instant noodles in the braised chicken soy sauce. It was interesting, but would probably not try again. French toast - a bit dissapointing as previous 2 times was crispy and delicious. This time it was not as good, dare I say soggy. Will come again as it is close to everything I go to. Star will come back if the french toast comes back crisy next time. read more
If you are looking for a no-BS, not-made-for-IG, no-bear-shaped-rice-swimming-in-sauce, tasty, great value, restaurant that does hainanese chicken rice right, then you gotta eat here! This is my kind of HK cafe. Good service, super tasty food without breaking the bank. Their hainanese chicken is probably one of the best I have had and that includes trying it in Singapore and HK. I find too many HK restaurants are focused on the look of the food and to make it IG ready (you know who you are!) and they forgot about the most important thing: Flavour! You won't have that problem here. What you may have a problem with is getting a table. This place is always packed with people who recognize HK Cafe game when they taste it. read more
This is the kind of stereotypical HK cafe restaurant that is a well-loved local spot among the Chinese community. Food is tasty (strongly recommend their Hainanese chicken rice or curry beef brisket rice), HK milk tea is strong, and the service & ambiance are no-fuss. Don't expect stellar service or aesthetically nice seating/booths. It's all about the food here -- I mean, that's why there's usually a huge line outside this small cafe. i originally went on a friday evening and it was so busy that they ran out of hainanese chicken rice by 5:30 pm :( we decided to come back on the next tuesday around 4 to play it safe. it was still super packed (wait time ~45 min) that we ended up getting take out. we got the hainanese chicken and the beef brisket with curry on rice, with 2 hong kong style milk teas on the side. honestly i was super impressed with the flavors :) im a huge hainanese chicken rice lover and so many people hyped this place up so the bar was high and it still exceeded my expectations !! the chicken was super tender and flavorful and paired perfectly with the rice. this was also my first time trying curry beef brisket and WOW im a fan! it was super rich in flavor and the beef was soooo tender :) overall really great meal! read more
Always wondered why there was such a long lineup at this restaurant and I think I figured it out after trying. It's because the restaurant is too small inside. Starting with the good, their Hainanese Chicken Rice is good in terms of taste, portion, and price. The tomato pork chop rice was below average. While the sauce is ok, the pork chop was very tough. It is one of my least favourite tomato pork chop rice I've had from various similar restaurants. The rice rolls with siu mai was borderline inedible. Big clumps and not very fresh. A waste of $10. The french toast was also just ok. I arrived 3 minutes after they opened and the restaurant was already full and I had to go on waiting list for another 35 minutes. Wasn't worth the wait. I'd say come here only for Hainan chicken rice. read more

One of the best Hainanese chicken rice in Markham. I believe it is one of places that comes with all three sauces. Chicken meat quality and the rice with chicken oil are always good, but portion is a bit small. For lunch, it might not be enough! Also the bake cheese chicken rice is always good. I add the scramble egg on side for $1. Everything is good, but need to wait at least 45 mins during lunch time, which is a down side. read more
Saw lots of great reviews of this place and decided to give it a try. Went on a Sunday and the line was LONG, waited for 30 mins at least before it was our turn. My friend got the hainan chicken, and I got the baked pork chop rice. The portion as u see, wasn't so big, I think if u r a guy u 10000/10 won't be full afterwards, but for me it is decent. When I tried my baked rice I actually didn't know why reviews were good, because it was indeed very mediocre and u can eat anywhere but pay way less than what they charge here. read more

Small spot with minimal seating.. really meant for a in and out kind of dining.. they have affordable Cha chaan teng 茶餐廳 aka HK Cafe food thats simple and comforting as you would expect from a HK Cafe. Expect to wait because you have a constant flow of customers waiting to be seated.. you write your name down on a notebook but don't have an option to leave your number so you gotta stick around! Originally came here for the hainanese chicken and wanted to order some other dishes to get a broader feeling/experience of their food.. loved everything especially the chicken rice with the 3 sauce options! This is one of those foodie spots where it's worth the wait. It gets quite busy during lunch time or afternoon tea due to the limited tables, so expect to wait if you come during prime time. One of the rare HK cafe spots in Markham to find combos for under $10 (located in Langham Square). I find their portions to be pretty decent for the price and the food is delicious! I got the baked chicken steak on rice w/ tomato sauce and it was spot on. The tomato sauce have a hint of sweetness which I don't mind and they use fried rice as well. The HK milk tea was not too milky which brings out more of the tea. I didnt need to add any sugar as there's enough flavour for my liking. Overall, really worth trying for a nice cheap eat place if you don't mind the small space. With people opening the door, it does get a bit chilly if it's windy or cold outside. I find coming before 12pm and after 1:30pm can get you a table without waiting for too long. read more
Garden Hong Kong Cafe is continuing to be one of the more underrated spots for HK Diner food. They don't have the flashy appeal compared to other spots we have been seeing pop up, but they do deliver with great flavours in homestyle cha chaan teeng food! The place is a bit small for dine-in, but that doesn't matter. It counts in the food! By all means, it is worth the wait! The one dish you must try is the Hainanese Chicken on Rice. When they mentioned it is their signature dish, they are not kidding! The chicken is tender and juicy that pairs well with their trio of sauces. They don't offer the typical green onion & ginger sauce, you also have a chance to experience the chicken with sweet soy sauce glaze or a sambal chili sauce to give you the sense of salty, sweet and spicy. The rice is nice and fluffy. Personally, it could do with a bit more seasoning, but the flavour of the side poaching broth makes up for it! One of the underrated spots in Markham and it will continue to be so with their great flavours and service. read more

Yummy food at reasonable prices! I had the black pepper chicken steak on rice, mom had the chicken steak and wings with noodles in chicken broth, dad had the club house and a pineapple bun with butter! Everything was delicious. They were sold out on the molten french toast with salted eggs. The iced HK tea was devine as with the hot HK tea! Be there early for the French toast with salted egg and other popular menu choices. read more
Location/Service This place is located in Langham Place plaza - plenty of parking available (including underground), although it does get pretty busy during peak hours and also when there's a T&T supermarket there. Pretty small restaurant that basically can fit 10 people - since it's all take out now, that's kind of out of the picture. Because it's a bit small, not a lot of huge social distance measurements are in place. They try to separate with the tables - sanitizers are there, but no plexiglass. Staff are generally nice and clear in communication. Orders can take a while during peak hours - sometimes up to 30min wait. Food I tried a few items here. Once of the things I like is there Garden Special Set - which I usually go for the one with Truffle & Egg meal. This comes with a black truffle scrambled egg butter toast and a tomato soup of ham and macaroni. The egg is really soft and fluffy, adding the truffle oil makes it extra flavourful. The soup is clean and healthy, also flavourful and I don't feel the MSG. Another item I like is their classic baked pork chop on fried rice with cheese. It again uses a tomato/ketchup sauce, which is a little bit on the sweeter the. - but pairs very well with the fried rice. The pork chop pieces were plentiful and it doesn't come with any bones. They're easy to chew, tender - overall giving that comforting meal. This is a good local business support - especially you don't see a lot of HK cafes lately anymore. They are offering 20% off cash payment during the pandemic. read more
