New City Restaurant is one of those long-standing spots in the plaza that people keep coming back to. Although there is a lot of parking in this plaza, there are times when there is hardly any available spots. Service is quick and efficient every time I've gone. The menu is HK-style café with a wide range of options, so there's something for everyone. I've tried quite a bit from their menu over time, and nothing has been disappointing. One thing I appreciate is that they don't over-season their food, especially with salt. Most of their meals come with drinks and a choice of soup and they have CREAM SOUP! It's much rarer to find a place that still offers it nowadays. Drinks are also better than average compared to the surrounding hk styled cafes in this plaza. I'd come back because it's reliable and easy to enjoy, especially with a small group of people! read more

We were looking for a replacement for the beef brisket rice, ever since Mings closed down. Glad we tried New City, because we actually preferred it! They used a lot less potato, which was really good. Also the rice was really tasty. And we all loved the brisket. read more

I was referred by my cousin to visit this HK cafe located in the busy strip mall on Kennedy Rd and Hwy 7. This restaurant serves up some delicous HK diner favourites and most dishes come with soup and hot drink. My first visit I tried the viral sizzling sirloin steak with fries and black pepper gravy. It was $29.99 when I tried it. I believe the prices have gone up slightly. I also got a scoop of ice cream for dessert. Perfect meal for me. My wife got the baked curry beef brisket. The dish was good but mostly rice and not enough beef brisket. Our second we tried the fried chicken leg with fried egg and choice of gravy. The chicken had a nice chinese breading and I believe some salted egg yolk as well. The chicken was crispy and juicy inside. We definitely marked this dish as a must have when we come back. Our 3rd visit we tried the baked cream chicken with rice. This dish was underwhelming and didn't have enough chicken. The cream sauce was tasty but we felt it was more of a frozen dinner variety. I ordered the fried grouper fish with garlic gravy. The fish was crispy and really nice breading. The dish needed some veggies for garnish but I understand they are trying to keep the prices affordable. If you are looking for some HK cafe that serves up some viral dishes and great value, then I recommend this place. read more

We wanted to come to New City for breakfast but got here too late so we got their sets! They revamped their menu design and it looks like a legit Hong Kong café now! :) Loved their Regular set D with the juicy egg and ham sando (juicy pic on slide 5) but their egg foo yung on rice stole the show (slide 2). Lots of toppings and the flavour is BANGING You feeling hungry? Their lemongrass pork on rice with egg is HUMONGOUS. It does taste a little sweeter than usual but this was a deal! New City might be in my favourites now! Staff are very accommodating and polite, they allowed us to change noodle to macaroni. Vibe is casual and very easygoing. Yes, we came back! When I came here Last time, I just started exploring HK cafe at that moment. After that, I have been to many different HK cafes. This one is still at the top of my list! I ordered the tepayaki pork & chicken with fries and onion sauce. OMG! the amount was still shockingly huge! Very very very nice deal! Check out my latest photos of the dish, it was crazy, the owner of this restaurant was crazy. It basically the two-people's amount of food. The most important thing is that the food was soooo delicious! The pork chop was full of flavour. How's that possible? Pork chops are most lean meat and flavour is hard to get in, we usually add flavour via the condiments, sauce, salt and pepper, etc. New City Restaurant somehow made the saltyness and umami marinated into the meat and made each bite an amazing experience! The service was great great great! The servers spoke basically Cantonese, but they tried to spoke to us in not that fluent Mandarin. 2.5 STARS I ordered uber eats for dinner. I got the steak with gravy sauce on rice and their baked pork chop with tomato sauce on fried rice. Came with Hong Kong borscht soup and soda. I was pretty excited to try it as I've seen good reviews. I was wrong. The baked pork chop had very little to no flavour, dry, the tomato sauce tasted like canned tomato paste with water and the fried rice was meh. The steak with gravy sauce was the biggest disappointment. The steak was .5cm thick, chewy, no flavour, and the gravy didn't help at all. My daughter wanted the steak and she said that was not steak; mind you she is only 4 years old. Hong Kong borscht soup was the worst I ever had. Too sour and it felt like I was served the last bits of soup of the bottom of the pot. Couldn't eat most of it, had to throw away everything. Heard that this is one of the OG HK-style cafes in Markham that's still dishing out delicious food so we had to come give it a try! We arrived after 2pm after the lunch rush and the restaurant was still filled with diners so we just ordered pork chop over rice to go. Very tasty!! They give a generous amount of pork chop and the meat was tender and not dry at all. I liked the consistency of the tomato sauce. At other places, it's either too watery or a thick gloopy mess. This is such a fun Hong Kong style diner! There was a bit of wait when we got there a little before 9, but it wasn't too long. Fried Chicken thigh with fries - First off the chicken was massive. Skin was hella crispy and bubbly. But inorder to achieve that, the chicken was overcooked. Like the ends of the chicken was getting dry, like thai deep fried pork belly dry... On top of that the chicken lacked seasoning, almost no seasoning at all... Comes with the no name syrup. It wasn't crispy but not soggy either. The afternoon tea version comes with peanut butter, but it looks like they have salted egg yolk or coconut on their regular menu. I didn't get as much peanut butter flavor as I would have liked, likely because the bread slices were pretty thick. The milk tea tasted a little salty. Not as much tea flavour. This restaurant has been here forever and is always busy. We came late on a weekday morning, and the restaurant was already almost full. For three adults and a baby, we ordered two bowls of noodles, a shrimp wonton, and a slice of toast. There was a choice of macaroni, vermicelli, spaghetti, rice noodles or instant noodles along with beef ball, fish ball, squid ball, fish slice, beef tendon and brisket, Chinese sausage and wonton. The second bowl of noodles came with luncheon meat, bacon, slices of ham, two fried eggs, sausage, and bbq pork. Each of the three meals came with a complimentary drink of coffee, tea, or soy milk. The prices are reasonable, except for the slice of toast; that was $2! Drinks arrive at the table first, and the food not too long after that. Amidst all of the new "fusion" cafes, it has been quite discouraging to try as they don't hold up even a decent quality on top of a high price tag. But new city...they're the GOAT and they know as long as their food is good, they don't need any gimmicks to keep customers coming back. Everyday I'm shuffling! After a 24hr power outage due to a chaotic storm, we were itching for hot comfort food. This led us from one city to another, landing us at New City Restaurant. This HK cafe was packed with diners inside. Always a good sign, and we lucked straight into a 2-person corner spot. A myriad of menu cards flashed across our eyes. I landed on the Garoupa Cutlet on Rice. Prior to the dish, we received the sweet & sour Russian borscht soup, a classic of such cafes. In a pleasant surprise, milk tea arrived in the esteemed KamCha cups. The fried fish cutlets arrived in a thick katsu batter accompanied by a bowl of black pepper sauce. This fulsome meal warmed the soul on the chilly day. The aptly named Bowl of Noodle caught my wife's eyes. Despite the plain description, it included everything from the chef's pantry (beef ball, fish ball, squid ball, fish slice, beef tendon & brisket, Chinese sausage, & wontons). The simple rice noodle soup tasted balanced with no complaints. It came with, and the dish was literally, her usual cup of tea. Update: we've also tried the Hot Plate Top Sirloin Steak with black pepper sauce. It's quite a massive plate with a sizzle and fries, cabbage & carrot underneath. The medium rare was slightly uneven. Baked Steak & Pork Chop w/ Tomato Sauce on top of spaghetti was creamy and came in a huge portion as well. New City Restaurant has old school flair. It was literally the busiest spot among the many food options at New Kennedy Square. Staff buzzed around at a hectic pace as patrons came & went. Fast food came streaming out of the kitchen. I've been seeing this place on YouTube and wanted to give this place a try. According to one of the bloggers, this place is supposed to make the best baked pork chop. The restaurant is the cozy kind of small, with the walls being made of jade and the booths being made of wood. The booths line the walls and windows, while regular tables are placed in the middle. Modern silver chandeliers hang over the regular tables and ball-shaped lights dangle above the booths as well. We arrived right before the lunch rush and got immediately seated. Originally, we were seated at a booth by the door. I had to request a change because there was a fan blowing on us while we were sitting there. Daughter and hubs were sick and I didn't feel it would be wise to sit there and freeze in silence, especially with the cold weather that Canada was experiencing at the moment. The waitress changed our seats without question. I'm glad we did that because the tables were all occupied within minutes after we sat down. Hubs ordered the Rice Noodle/ "Guilin" style . Guilin style has minced pork, tomatoes, cilantro, sweet and sour preserved vegetables. It's served with any kind of noodle in soup. The noodle choices were macaroni, vermicelli, spaghetti, rice noodle, instant noodle). He ordered it with instant noodles. He absolutely loved it. It was nice and savory and it satiated his soupy noodles craving. It came along with a drink and he ordered coffee. Daughter ordered the Special Baked Meal E, which was Baked Beef with tomato sauce and rice lunch special. She ordered Russian Borscht and coffee. Her entree took a while to come out but we didn't mind as her blood sugar was a bit high. She was waiting for it to come down before she could eat. So, it was a blessing in disguise that it took a while to be made. My guess is that they forgot her order. Daughter loved her baked beef and thought it was soft. She loved the borscht and her coffee. Lastly, I had the Special Baked Meal F, which was Baked Pork Chop with spaghetti. I thought the pork chop was a bit overdone. It was ok. The pasta was ok. I ordered borscht and tea and loved them as well. Coffee and tea tasted great. It was nice and strong and we loved the cups it was served in. It hit the spot. I'm very glad we came here. I've been wanting to come here for a while and it didn't disappoint. Service was friendly and quick. I was very glad that we didn't feel rushed so that they can clear the table for people waiting. After 3 very long pandemic-affected years I was finally able to return to Toronto this past weekend, and I made plans to return to New City again since it had made an impression on me the last time I was in town. I was also able to try a bunch of other 茶餐廳s around Markham and Milliken so I had a better reference of taste this time around. I can say now confidently of all the places we tried over the weekend, New City definitely is the most faithful to HK-style taste. While other places may have had more daring fusion-y products or better locations/interiors, something about New City really hits the spot when it comes to grimy 茶餐廳 nostalgia, from the cramped seating to additional menu items hand-written and stuck on wall posters to the taste of the food itself. There was some wait time when I went around Saturday noontime but wasn't longer than 10 minutes or so. My party ordered two different types of soup noodles and I would characterize New Citys soup noodle flavors as light. Both the satay and beef brisket were well made and on the light side flavor wise and not too salty. This worked well for the brisket but fans of satay might want more kick out of a satay beef. Noodles were basic but the brisket was soft and of pleasant texture. I had the lunch set with a chicken steak and onion sauce; over the years I have had some heinous attempts at HK-style onion sauces in both Canada and the US and was relieved that New Citys onion sauce is pretty good, also hews to the light side a little. The milk tea was better than I remembered it, New Citys milk tea style is definitely on the milkier end of the spectrum, which works for me but the actual tea flavor won't be as pronounced for those who like a more "濃" style. No doubt that the pandemic and that I live in a part of the USA where Cantonese food is borderline nonexistent has amplified my longing for this type of cuisine, but whatever the reason, New City just tastes immensely satisfying to me and sends me down memory lane in a way other restaurants in the area didn't. Ahh this is a true HK Cafe that I often go to for afternoon tea. I came here on a Saturday around 2:30PM and was lucky enough to get a table for 2. Usually it is packed and you would have to wait after you put your name on the wait list. My go to at this place is usually the hk milk tea or lemon tea. They have lots of options to choose from and all of them are super affordable. I ended up getting the ramen with spam and egg. The broth was warming and the dish tasted great. It came out super fast as well. I do recommend adding chili oil to this as it added a nice kick to the dish! Definitely will be back! read more

Been sitting on this review for a few years now but New city is definitely the most authentic HK style type of cuisine in the Markham/ GTA area. I have searched far and wide for the best HK style locations and I keep ending back at New city. My go to is the cutlet pork chop with gravy sauce with an ice cold hk style milk tea. I also love their french toast with peanut butter + honey for my sweet tooth. I have tried many other items such as their signature baked rice options and steak with rice. I will say though that their OG HK style dishes like instant noodles with ham & egg or luncheon may not appeal to some who are not accustomed to this type of cuisine as they will not blow your mind with incomparable flavours. New city is a Markham gem and may not blow you away but if you are looking for an authentic HK style cafe, they are a must try! read more

It took about 15 mins to get seated because they were very busy, but their turnover rate is very quick. It's a little hole-in-the-wall type of place. Got seated and ordered the rice noodle with meats option (fish ball, squid ball, beef ball, beef tendon and brisket, some other ones I forgot) and a lemon iced tea. It literally took less than 5 minutes to get the food. Everything was hot and tasty. The iced tea was delicious and sweet. I would totally go back there. read more

If I can give zero star, I would!! I've been visiting this restaurant for so many years, from high school to now. My husband and I are very, very disappointed from our recent visit. COVID makes it tough for every business, everyone is trying to survive from this pandemic. But I really can't support them if their food quality goes down this badly. My husband ordered steak with gravy on rice. It is typical for every HK style cafe to at least have a nominal amount of vegetable to go with the meal, but they have now become very literal. Only has steak, gravy and rice. And there is proportionately too much rice. Drink is included, but it's an extremely small cup. Just slightly bigger than an expresso cup. I order hot lemon tea for my drink, and I can finish it in 3 sips. Oh dear!! Many restaurants have had to adjust to manage costs given less business, which I can understand. But they are cutting and scrimping on everything while others can keep their food quality and portions consistent. Guess I won't visit them again until the pandemic is over. read more

Finally a HK cafe that still serves sizzling plate steaks! DECOR: 4/5 It's spacious and clean! It's FOOD: 4/5 The prices are on par with most HK cafes I think. They have a large menu, but they're scattered across a bunch of little specialized menus so it can get a little confusing. This is one of the few places (if not only) places left that still serve sizzling plate steaks. They were a lot more common when I was growing up but they seem to have gone extinct.. I ordered the mixed platter for $19.99 which came with steak, pork chop, 2 deep fried chicken wings, bacon, sausage, and ham. All on top of a bed of french fries (you can get spaghetti or rice too), drizzled with garlic sauce, and with some veggies mixed in there (cabbage and carrots). The platter combo also comes with garlic bread, a soup (cream or borscht), icecream, and a drink (I added a $1 for iced hk milk tea). THE VALUE! We also ordered a spaghetti bolognese meal and for $11.25, which also came with all of the above, except the icecream. They both tasted amazing. Albeit, a little greasy, but what do you expect when eating a sizzling plate steak? The steak was a little overdone, as it was at the very bottom of all the meats (closest to the hot plate). I remembered after that you can specify how well done you like your steak. She didn't ask us for our preference, but we could've probably asked it to be more rare.
