I'm always hesitant to order pork chop baked rice at HK tea restaurants, because I am extremely sensitive to pork that is not 100% fresh. I feel some restaurants tend to use pork that is not fresh for this dish to save a few bucks, particularly, because they thought the tomato sauce could cover up that taste. I decided to give it a shot at Cha Kee because I just really wanted to have it today, and damn, I've got to say I was extremely impressed by the baked pork chop on rice here. It was perhaps one of the best I've ever tasted in recent years, after visiting countless HK tea restaurants. The tomato sauce itself is perfect - sour and sweet in the best way possible. The pork chop? Excellent. Not only is it super fresh (unlike how it is sometimes served in other Hk tea restaurants), but the texture, the cut and the flavours are all perfect. The uniquely juicy thick cut was nicely coated in panko and cooked to crispy perfection. Every bite is a satisfying, pleasant surprise. While it is not the cheapest in town, it comes with a free drink (and the ice drink is the same price!) I will definitely come back often. read more

This is your standard HK Style cafe with menu choices ranging from baked rice/spaghetti to noodle soups and western French toast to pineapple bun with butter. It's not a big place with just over a dozen tables. There is a daily lunch special that is anywhere from 15-18 dollars and includes a drink. On the day we came it was stir fried satay beef noodles. What we ordered: Baked chicken with cream sauce on spaghetti. - chunks of chicken thigh covered in a white cream sauce baked with spaghetti (can also choose rice) Pork chop and eggs with scallion sauce - This is basically a pan fried pork chop with scallion sauce on the side and a mound of rice covered in a thin fried egg Both dishes come with a drink, including cold (you don't have to pay extra like other places) What stood out was that the food lacked flavour. My family and I stopped by Cha Kee because we were craving Hong Kong-style food for lunch. There were a few tables ahead of us, so we added ourselves to the waitlist. Fortunately, the wait wasn't too long, and we were seated fairly quickly. Aside from a few entrée options, most dishes come with a drink, so we all tried the hot Hong Kong-style milk tea. It was quite thick (almost a bit slimy) and not overly sweet. Personally, I thought it was OK, but one of my cousins wasn't a fan. We also tried a couple of lemon teas, but they tasted more like honey than lemon. B04 PINEAPPLE BUN WITH SLICE OF COLD BUTTER We ordered four of these and shared them among the group. The pineapple egg-wash crust was good, but the bun itself didn't taste fresh; it was a bit stale. I suspect these weren't freshly baked but rather leftovers from the previous day. The butter didn't melt well into the bun either. AD01 SIGNATURE BAKED PORK CHOP ON RICE/SPAGHETTI We chose rice for the base. This was a very heavy dish. The baked pork chop and rice were smothered in a tangy tomato sauce that tasted more like ketchup. The rice was very mushy and unappetizing, and the breading on the pork chop was a bit soggy. Overall, this dish didn't hit the mark. T13 FRENCH TOAST WITH PEANUT BUTTER The French toast had the perfect crunchy texture, with a generous layer of peanut butter in between the slices. While I'm not a fan of peanut butter, everyone else enjoyed it. The flavors were good overall, and I'd recommend this dish. AD21 BBQ PORK AND SMOOTH SCRAMBLED EGGS ON RICE The BBQ pork was more like ham (which I don't like very much), but the sauce was quite delicious. The scallions scrambled into the eggs helped elevate the flavor. Without the sauce and scallions, this dish would have been a complete flop. AD28 SATAY BEEF WITH SMOOTH SCRAMBLED EGGS ON INSTANT NOODLES SCALLION SAUCE (NO SOUP) The satay beef was very flavorful, with a bit of a spicy kick and very tender. The gravy/sauce was delicious. Without the beef and sauce, this dish would have been pretty subpar. The instant noodles had a good texture, on the firmer side. However, there were something about the eggs that didn't quite hit right with me. AD07 BAKED FISH FILET W/CHEESE & CREAM SAUCE ON RICE/SPAGHETTI We chose spaghetti as the base for this dish. The baked fish was decent, but it came with way too much sauce, while the pasta barely had any. The cream sauce wasn't bad, but it was quite dense, which made the dish a bit heavy. This plaza is going through a bit of construction so there's even less parking than usual. Aside from this, Cha Kee has a check in device at the front that tells you how many tables are ahead of you. We were there for breakfast/brunch at around 10 and there were still a few tables left. The menu is quite simple (or you could say not a lot of variety). It's mainly pineapple buns (with different variations or original), standard eggs with whatever meats and the standard HK cafe noodle carb selection (ie satay beef on vermicelli). The most notable thing is that iced drinks didn't have the added fee so for many that's a bonus. I ordered the set with the pickled cabbage with pork shreds on vermicelli, the scrambled eggs (they don't ask you how you want your eggs) and then upgraded the toast to the pineapple bun with butter (for $3.50). I had the ying yang as the drink (coffee milk tea mix) I enjoyed the hot beverage (it's getting cold!). The drink itself was smooth and well made. Very aromatic. The pineapple bun was very good. Crisp on the top and chewy/pillowy texture. I'd say $3.5 is a wee bit hefty though as an add on fee. The vermicelli was pretty standard but their chili oil (you have to ask them for it) is quite decent. A kick with a nice aroma. The eggs were surprising decent since I usually go for sunny side eggs. They were still moist and melts in your mouth! We got kicked out after about 2 hours lol which is fair given it was getting close to lunch time and it was time for them to turn the table to a new group. I would come back if I wanted this specific food but it also wasn't really much to write home about. They're a wee bit on the pricier side relative to most of the other Markham places. read more

Went with their Tuesday special, Signature baked Bolognese spaghetti w/ cheese (can substitute with rice) and tomato beef noodle soup. Good value as both dishes came with a drink choice (chose ice lemon tea) at no extra charge. Spaghetti was not overcooked, Bolognese sauce was meaty and clung to each spaghetti strand, could have used more cheese. Tomato beef soup was lacking in tomsto flavor, more small chopped tomatoes would have made a difference. Beef was tender but also lacking so the ratio of noodles to beef/tomatoes was off, found myself slurping more noodles in isolation due to the minimum amount of beef/tomatoes. I returned here on a Sunday around 6:00 pm. The restaurant was completely empty so we were the only guests, to be joined by one other person later and maybe 2-3 takeout orders during our hour-long stay. They have about 10 tables, varying whether you can sit 2-4 people each. The place looked very clean. We were greeted upon entry and told we could seat ourselves wherever we liked. We were immediately given menus for each person at our table of four. After ordering, they immediately gave us napkins, cutlery, and four bowls for sharing since we ordered three dishes and a snack - it was nice that they clued in, without us having to ask. The food came along quickly. We got the following: 1. Curry fish balls: the fish balls themselves had a nice chew and texture to them, but overall, was not flavorful enough. 2. Baked Bolognese Fries: a favorite of ours. They use crinkle fries which are softened by the sauce but there's always a good amount of sauce and meat. Flavor is good without being too salty. 3. Satay beef vermicelli which also comes with scrambled eggs and toast, as part of their all-day breakfast menu. I didn't have any of this so I cannot comment. 4. Pork cutlet with tomato sauce on spaghetti: from the English name, I didn't realize the pork cutlet would be fried but I appreciated that it wasn't oily and actually very juicy and tender. The amount of pork chop was also amazing, literally half the plate. The flavor of the tomato sauce was okay, being a little sweet. I wish they premixed the spaghetti with the sauce as this was a bit of a struggle to do, given how full the plate was. The latter three dishes came with drinks, with no upcharge if you wanted iced beverages so that's what we ordered. Personally, I felt my iced lemon tea was lacking in flavor. Came to Cha Kee on a weekday night an hour before their closing time. The dishes came out pretty fast and was able to enjoy the food without feeling rushed. The waitresses were friendly and provided good service. I mostly tried the baked pork and chicken chop this time and it tasted great, decent portion size. One of the best milk tea in town! This restaurant is modern and the queuing system uses tablet at the entrance to take the name and phone number! Since it has notice that all customers can use 45 minutes to dine in, the wait is pretty ok - 10 minutes. It basically has breakfast and lunch and is offer the whole day. The baked port chop rice is good. The black pepper beef in vermicelli is pretty one of a kind. However the beef is a bit chewy and the sauce is a bit light. Superb Hong Kong Style food is served here. This tiny spot with challenging parking lot had very friendly servers with quick response times that made this trip worthwhile. I had a pineapple bun along with an iced lemon tea. Both were not only great, but priced well, too. My daughter loved the noodles and my son loved the rice with chicken cutlet. The interior of the space is tiny, like any Hong Kong cafe. Be prepared for a wait during peak weekend times, but trust me, it is well worth the wait. read more

A few things I've tried: - Portuguese chicken rice: Flavour and portion was both good. They actually gave me a lot of chickens, not simply filling up the dish with potatoes like other HK cafes did. - Satay beef noodle: I didn't like the flavour. It was a mediocre dish. - Fried chicken wings with fries: Wings were made to perfect temperature and both flavour and portion were not bad. Fries tasted mediocre though. - Beef brisket curry rice: Portion was a bit small. The brisket melted in your mouth with good flavours. Curry sauce was a bit watery. It was super packed when we arrived a bit after noon on a Monday. It didn't take long for tables of two to open though and there were a few chairs that customers could sit at while waiting. Service was friendly and prompt. I had the curry beef brisket with instant noodles (it does not come with soup) and my lunch partner had the Russian borscht with toast and eggs. The curry was quite good. The flavours were all there and it was not spicy. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of meat that came with the noodles. Many times you get a few small pieces of meat and a lot of noodles. This was definitely not the case. I thought for sure I'd be able to finish everything no problem but it was more filling than I thought. The only downfall was that there was a small pool of oil at the bottom of the bowl. Read about this place in the Toronto Star so wanted to come in to give it a try! It was about a 20 minute wait at lunchtime for a table of 2. We tried two combos from the all-day breakfast menu: Chicken Steak combo and Satay Beef Vermicelli combo. Overall the eggs were scrambled very nicely and the HK milk tea was tasty. I have been here twice for weekend lunches. Both times we waited for approximately 20 mins for a table of 2, which I find reasonable for the quality of food they serve. The first time we ordered baked Portuguese chicken rice, grilled pork chop with egg rice and their curry fishballs. I like how the sauce in the chicken rice isn't gloppy and yellow, like what you get at most cha ceng teng. The orangey-yellow sauce had a creamy texture to it. This dish can be improved by having the rice stir fried before putting it into the dish to bake. The pork chop and egg rice wasn't memorable. The curry fishballs had a nice kick. The second time I ordered one of their special, scrambled egg with truffle on toast and my dining companion ordered another special of the day, Portuguese pork chop baked rice. We also ordered a plate of fishball to share. I was pleasantly surprised with the strong aromatic taste of the truffle eggs. I wasn't expecting much since it's from a cha ceng teng but they were definitely generous with the amount of truffles. The eggs were silky, just the way I liked them. Sweet, but I can eat an entire one by myself as a meal! Great for sharing. Cha Kee's HK milk tea was also the proper, smooth, full-bodied, traditional one. Comes unsweetened - you add the sugar yourself! Place (3.5/5) : This is a no-frills, casual type of establishment. The place felt clean, and they also do their proper duty with checking vaccine receipts and ID (plus!!). I've brought my friends and family here before, and they've always enjoyed their experience here :) The service was also pleasant - the server ladies saw me taking pictures and explaining each dish to my non-Chinese friend (who has now been converted, btw), and was so nice to come over and help me move my milk tea out of the way in case my clumsy bum knocks it over. My review is based on the two recent visits during the weekday. First visit I arrived the cafe right at 11AM when they just open and there was no wait, but it was filled quickly within 15 minutes. Another visit was after noon time and my wait was around 20 minutes. Cha Kee is specialized in Hong Kong style cafe food. I could smell the nice Hong Kong tea aroma when I walked in which is a very good sign. This place is clean and newly decorated. The staff is very friendly and polite. Food and drink arrived promptly; they don't charge extra for iced tea/coffee which is very nice. Food is very on point and is authentic. I am especially impressed by the pineapple bun sandwich which I ordered in both visits. The crust is very crunchy and nice aroma. The sweetness mixes well with the savoury content. I would say it is a must order item. I upgraded the egg to truffle fried egg which is very runny and soft. They also specialize in fried egg dish which is similar to Japanese omelette style, very silky and runny. The Swiss (sweet) sauce fried udon with beef in the daily special listed on the white board was nicely done. The udon is more like thick noodle/pasta which is very al dente. Another item I enjoyed very much is the pork chop. It is very fatty yet make the meat not too lean and has a good texture. The curry beef balls, the sauce was spicy with some depth of spiciness yet the fish balls are good but not exceptionally great. Maybe my expectation is too high and hope to compare the best ones I had in Hong Kong. Wish the fish ball is more bouncy and smooth. I will definitely go back and try their curry and satay dishes. Here are the facts: We waited for over 30 minutes, only to have employees tell us that because another family had a child, we were pressured to give our table away. Food looked okay, but service is pretty crap. Ambiance is small and honestly could be arranged better to make better use of the space. The great thing about this restaurant is they don't charge extra for cold drinks. They serve mainly HK cafe style menu items like fish balls, portuguese rice, satay beef vermicelli etc. Their specialty is pineapple bun sandwich with fried pork. However, that item is dependent on whether the pineapple buns are delivered on time or sold out. I heard they only make 20 or so a day. They also have daily specials that are not on the menu. A great HK cafe serving all your favourite HK style dishes at a good price. The inside of the resto is very clean with a modern decor. Each booth was segregated by a bearing or at least 2m apart. They even had a small shield at the end of each table which I thought was pointless bc the server needs to reach over to serve which make her more close to us but I guess it can make some people feel more comfortable? In terms of the service, it is one of the best I've experienced. The 2 ladies there were super nice and efficient. Even the owner/manager came by to ask if we are doing ok?!!! Like, when does that ever happen at Chinese restaurants let alone a small cafe so kudos to the owner. For food, I really enjoyed the shredded pork vermicelli. Location/Service This restaurant is in the same plaza as Yu Seafood and Shinta, along Highway 7. Plenty of parking in the plaza, but can pretty packed during peak times. The place inside is small, prob have around 10-15 tables, family size. Since it's recently opened, there is a bit of a queue. But if you come early or right when they open, I only waited for about 10-15min. Staff were very friendly and nice, appreciate their efforts and willingness to help. There are definitely improvements to the workflow and setup, which I'll highlight at the end. Food Currently serves all day menu items, but they will have breakfast and afternoon tea. Ordered 3 items: baked pork chop rice, curry braised beef noodle, chicken rice with pepper sauce. Pork chop rice was good, liked the cheese and sauce. The pork chop itself was large in quantity and done right. The portion may look small, but was filling. Pepper sauce chicken was alright. Chicken was a little fatty, but it was still tender and compliments well with the sauce. A little bit of veggies on the side. Curry beef noodle was disappointing. Portion size was smaller compared to the other two. The instant noodles had a soy sauce based added, making it super salty on top of the curry. The beef was a little tough and didn't overall fit well as a whole. Drinks were good. I enjoyed the "yeen Yeung" I ordered, smooth and not overly bitter (didn't add additional sugar). Price wise, came to around ~$12/dish. Hot and cold drinks are same price (take advantage for now). A little bit on the higher end for a HK Cafe, but reasonable for today's market. Overall, there are better HK cafes. Definitely not worth to queue for 30min to get a seat. Since it's still soft opening, I could see potential for this place. One is to establish a set of checklist when you bring guests to the table - they don't supply water (which had to be asked multiple times) and double check utensils (it's in a basket, but when I went it was empty). There was a little mishap with orders, they quickly resolved, just need practice. They had enough staff, but it feels a little cluttered that they were at the front, not knowing what to do or what should be done - better if they split work tasks or assign designated work stations/tables. 4.5 stars I've been here twice. I have to say the service is the best hk cafe service I've had. The first time I had my wisdom tooth pulled out 3 days before and the boss and waitress spent time to find something I can eat. The food at that point was not too bad but I didn't get to really taste Dt my non chewing mouth. I came again today and had pork vermicelli. The best soup base! Very flavourful for such a simple dish everything was really good. The eggs were done to perfection. Even the bread is a thick bread not the regular grocery type. The only thing is I think the milk tea could be better, it was average. Also on the pricier side. But I get this plaza rent is more expensive on Hwy 7. Definitely my new favourite hk cafe. I was surprised to see a 3 star overall rating for Cha Kee. We were there for their afternoon tea on a weekday so probably that's why we didn't need to wait for a table. Restaurant was still packed considering it is a weekday. We ordered the chicken leg, beef/egg pineapple bun and their baked pork chop rice. Service was friendly - nothing to complain about. As for the food, the baked pork chop rice was one of the best I have had. The pork chop is thick and is meaty meaning it's 9:1 meat to bone ratio. The pork chop is deep fried slightly on the outside but still retained the juice inside. The tomato sauce they used is made from real tomato not the cheap tomato sauce you can from some chinese Cha Chan tang. The hardness of the rice is also just right - not too hard that it will break your teeth nor too soft and most importantly the rice is hot not warm/cold (yes some places don't care much about the temperature of their rice because they are premade from the night before). One thing though that they can improve on is the beef/egg pineapple bun is a bit tasteless. Not sure if the chef forgot to put salt in the beef or egg that day...the pineapple bun is a little too crunchy for my liking as well. We were craving but this did not hit the spot. The tomato soup was really thick, not really a sauce but also not really a soup. And the black pepper spaghetti was too pepper-y, every bite I was biting into a merely cracked black pepper. The condensers milk toast was really good though, we really enjoyed that. read more

To be fair I came on Saturday 4pm. So the place isn't busy... I guess the chef have more time to prepare the food. The food portion isn't as small as some people claims. Yes the price is 10% higher then norm, but they don't add extra $1.5 for cold drinks. Also price has gone up significantly every where. The taste... Standard HK restaurant, definitely not premium quality, but it's marginally better then the average. The presentation makes the food a bit more appetizing. The restaurant is relatively new... If I recall correctly, maybe this establishment is 4-5 yrs old. So it is still pretty clean and well kept. Didn't really like their management section off the front of the dining area at the entrance for servicing take out. Make sense for the restaurant, but slightly unsightly to the dine in Customers sitting near by.... Like us More importantly, would I return? I'll return but infrequently. There are other comparable HK style restaurants nearby within 3-4km drive, and with a bit better price point. read more

4 stars Please note the restaurants closes at 6-6:30pm everyday. This location has been one of my go to place during Covid, take out or dine in. The menu is petite compare to other HK cafe restaurants, but I think smaller menu is good as restaurants can concentrate on what they are good at. The food for dine in portion is good vs the price I would say reasonable, the restaurant is known for their "soft egg" , there are various dishes with soft egg, I would recommend most of them, as they all tasted good. Take out portion for baked rice/spaghetti is bigger as the take out tray is bigger than dine in bowl, I would recommend that over taking out soft egg as it's always better to eat the soft egg fresh and without reheating. One of the other selling point for the restaurant is cold drinks are free, unlike most places there's an extra charge of $1-$2 or even more. Service is on the better end as they don't just check vaccination, but also checks your temperature. Servers also spray and sanitize the table before you sit down. Servers are also polite and try their best to accommodate to ur needs on dishes and drinks, for example no greens, less ice, less sweet. Environment is clean and modern feel, however the restaurant is quite small, so only fits about 20 or less patrons at full capacity, meaning if you come at lunch time you might have to line up. However there is a machine at the door (if lineup occurs) to input your phone number so everyone don't have to be packed at the entrance. read more

3.5/5, +.5 for service Came here for lunch with my family a couple days before I flew back to Winnipeg. We arrived at around 2pm and waited about 20 minutes for a table. It's a small but popular place, so definitely expect a wait during peak hours. My dad, who's been here several times, recommended the signature baked pork chop rice. I'm normally not a huge rice person, but I decided to trust his word. Sure enough it was delicious! Can't argue with the tomato sauce they used, and their pork cutlet was surprisingly juicy. Their iced lemon tea was decent. Not the best, but I've definitely had worse. Would give it 3.5 to 4, but the service was a bit lacking. Slightly passive aggressive when I was ordering, and felt slightly attacked by the server. Quite Hong Kong like service though. Food: Satay beef scrambled egg pineapple bun sandwich 4/5 - crispy pineapple bun with a nice soft textured scrambled egg omelette. The satay beef was flavourful but not overpowering and the beef was quite tender. The bun itself wasnt as soft and fluffy as I wouldve preferred, but overall a good portion and flavour for the price of $6.99 with a drink. Baked porkchop rice 3/5 - overall the flavour was there, but something was missing in terms of taste that I cannot seem to depict. You can taste the sweet tomato sauce as any HK porkchop rice would be, but in my opinion can have a more tomato taste to benefit the dish. Rice was more soft and wet than I liked, and the porkchop was rather small for the price compared to its competitors. Prob wont get again. Portuguese Chicken rice 4/5 - nice coconut flavour in the sauce. Again more towards the sweet side. Downfall is theres no potatoes but to compensate there was a good amount of chicken that was nice and tender. Spaghetti Bolognese sub rice 4/5 - sauce was sweet, but paired well with the cheese and the overall taste of the beef sauce was rich yet not overly heavy. Can benefit if it was not as sweet, but came with a good amount of sauce. Cheese definitely completed the dish. HK milk tea 2.5/5 - no milk tea taste and too creamy for my liking but was not necessarily silky smooth as it should be. Overall would come back, but it does get really packed and you can expect a long wait. Really isnt anything out of the ordinary. Price is also a bit expensive for the portion size they provide. read more
