The inn keepers are very friendly and welcomed us with open arms. Our room was small, but sufficient, with a fireplace and a balcony overlooking the lake. There is not much to do in the town of Cornucopia, which is about 20 minutes from Bayfield, but there are a few nice hikes near the B&B, or you can just relax on your balcony. I would recommend stopping by Siskiwit Falls, which is very close to the B&B. Bruce and Sandy serve breakfast at 8:30 am. Everything is homemade using local ingredients. On the day we were there, they served a quiche with sausage and wild rice, apple spic muffins and fruit. One thing to know, they do not accept credit cards! Make sure you have enough cash or your check book to pay for your room.

The house is built very traditionally with a foyer, dining & kitchen area, large living room and sitting room on the first floor and a large staircase to the upstairs where the rooms are located. When we visited, the only source of heat was from the fireplace which made things a tad chilly on the coldest nights, but was never unmanageable. The owners, Angie & Tim were welcoming and friendly. They were able to recommend nearby restaurants and were always very accommodating. The only thing we thought odd is that we stayed there over 2 years ago and never received any sort of follow up or further communication/invitation back! Perhaps this is their business model - not to overrun customers with marketing emails and promotions, however it was odd never to hear anything from them again.

Breakfast is our favorite meal of the day and our first one here was so sugary and starchy we actually went out for breakfast the second morning. The menu was French toast with blueberry sauce, harvest muffin so sugary it was inedible- and I am known for my sweet tooth!, and cheesy potatoes. Carb overload. Because our breakfast basket had been delivered to a different room and had someone else's name on it I assumed it was vegan or something. It was not. Angie said she typically serves vegetarian. I imagine it makes her job easier, but we are active young people and need a protein source. How about eggs??? In any form. I guess they occasionally do serve a quiche, so we just lost the roll of the dice. Phooey. On a positive note, we stayed in the Mayor's Chamber room which was as lovely as the photos. The tub was wonderful. The house is beautiful and the patio out front was bursting with amazing, pretty potted flowers. Also loved walking the neighborhood with it's huge historical homes. One last thing. I love to come into my room after it has been cleaned and the bed is made exactly as it was when we arrived. They did not do that. The sheet was tucked in, but none of the decorative pillows or coverlet had been put back on. Because the cleaning basket had been left in our room, maybe someone left before finishing? We'll never know. The housekeeping glitches and menu problems could be a fluke, hence the 3 stars instead of 2. We have experienced much better. p.s. I mentioned in the on-line registration form that it was our anniversary and they never mentioned it during our stay or did anything special. I read about all the extra nice things they did for couples in our room memory book. Another fluke or glitch?

This Inn sparkles with cleanliness! I notice details like baseboards, corners and shelves. Each railcar is decorated in a different theme. We stayed in the newly appointed Lighthouse Room. The lamps were shaped like lighthouses, the room was tastefully decorated with Lighthouse pictures and memorabilia, and the hallway that connects each railcar was built reminiscent of a rail yard and train station. When I called to make the reservation. I actually spoke with one of the owners. Cindy. She was personable and friendly. She is the epitome of a fantastic bed& breakfast-type Innkeeper. We met her at the Inn and she was funny and very welcoming. The food was good. They had your typical fare offered at most hotels. The only reason they didn't get a 5 star rating from me is I feel like they could develop a "trademark item" with their breakfast to go with the theme as well. The location is perfect for a quiet weekend or even a Northshore vacation. It's nestled in the wilderness and just a very short ride to Lake Superior. I highly recommend this Inn if you would like to relive some locomotive history!

However, the rate wasn't what I would say reasonable so decided to spend the same amount for the B&B experience. We have already visited Rittenhouse Inn and Summit Inn so this lighthouse experience totally got my attention. At first, I was bummed that all the rooms in the actual lighthouse were already taken. However, the Skiff House was a pleasant surprise being totally separate from the common lighthouse main building. Also, we had a large size hot tub with a pitcher to wash your hair. There were windows that peek out into the gift shop so it was nice that the Lighthouse museum closed at 4PM to get some privacy. We closed the blinds but still found people walking outside the gate to enjoy the sunset. Well, MeLissa was sooo nice to leave us some bread pudding in the fridge after it cooled off. Plus, she helped us with our luggage when we got confused and entered through the gift shop instead of the back entrance. MeLissa showed us the kitchen with an electric kettle with some hot chocolate/tea as well as microwave for popping popcorn. She also left us with 2 coupons at Blackwoods Restaurant and Vanilla Bean Café. We ended up having dinner at Blackwoods and picked up some jam at Vanilla Bean. Plus, there was a voucher to visit all the museums including the Lighthouse museum. I loved that we were able to enjoy the bread pudding after dinner when all the other guests were out. We enjoyed the peace and quiet in the parlor room and popped some popcorn to bring to the Skiff House. We then picked out 2 games- Trivial Pursuit and Phase 10 to borrow from the parlor room. Later that night, we enjoyed the board/card games with popcorn. When the sunset, we enjoyed the hot tub once all the tourists left the park. I would recommend to get eye mask and ear plugs since the rotating light source from lighthouse may distract you as well as boat horns. The next day, I woke up early and explored the grounds while everyone was asleep. I woke up my wife and we walked from our Skiff House to the lighthouse main bldg. to go to the top for the view. We looked through the port holes and watched as barges pass through. I dragged my wife to the observation room to get a good view of the harbor. Well, it was getting close to 8:30AM so we walked out to the breakwater fishing pier and noticed the large barge. When it was getting close to 9:00AM, we arrived at the main lighthouse bldg. for breakfast. Kevin was nice to fill up my thermos with coffee. We sat down early and were served first for some fruit soup, quiche, grapes, banana nut muffin along with some orange juice, coffee, and water. Overall, I was wowed on the hospitality and uniqueness to the whole experience. I would love to come back and share with my friends and family. There is even a fire pit that people used after dark to stay warm and socialize. By the way, there was no WiFi or TV so it's nice to actually spend time together without all the distractions of the internet or cable.

Quite a way to start my day and see my first glimpse of Lake Superior close up. Check it out with the fam and even your dog as it's pet friendly! Bring a lock to lock on the breakwave like lovers did on the love lock bridge in Paris France! You'll find them all over Lake Superior and Duluth!

Our first day there we had a very tasty smoked salmon scrambled eggs with a cinnamon scone. The second day was a baked custard of sorts with blueberry capote, grapefruit and sausage links. Of course there was plenty of juice and coffee. My guy and I just loved the chocolate chip cookies that were always there for the taking, the endless supply of coffee and the warm and inviting atmosphere of the place. There were several nice couples there at the same time and we all dined together in the common area. It was nice to share our day plans and talk about what we saw and did while we were there. We spent 2 days hiking several parks on the north shore. We can't wait to return and perhaps try out a different room. The only thing I can think to improve upon is that the water pressure in our bathroom needed some help. We loved the 2 person tub but it took FOREVER to fill and showers were pretty low pressure as well. The bed was comfy and the little frig in our room was a nice added feature.

First-class bathtub, but the shower curtain will invade your personal space otherwise. Would absolutely stay there again if "in the neighborhood." It's worth a few extra dollars compared to just an average motel.

Note: the owners informed us that they're going to stop serving morning breakfasts (next year, I think) because it's simply too much work for them (Tina, mainly) when Brian is away all week working his full-time job at a school three hours' drive away.

Felt like a second home!…read more This is the second time I've stayed at Spider Lake Lodge in October and hope to continue the tradition every Fall. Last year and again this year, I basically had the lodge to myself for the majority of my stay. Delise the hostess is a gem, makes fabulous breakfasts and is always incredibly accommodating! I stayed in the Hemingway Room both times and it's perfect, couldn't ask for a nicer experience. I spent a lot of time in the great room in front of the fire in the evenings. For anyone considering a stay here who loves history and likes to read, I'd suggest "Return to Wake Robin" by Marnie O. Mamminga, she and her family spent many summers at the lodge and after spending time here you can understand and appreciate how special this place was to her family. My best friend and his wife own a home just down the hill and around the corner from the lodge. A few years ago I read the book at their home and last year one rainy afternoon sitting in the great room with a fire roaring, reading the book again (the lodge has a signed copy) and it really brought the book to life for me! Don't let the fact that they only serve breakfast deter you from staying, it's always delicious and there are a multitude of dining options within easy distance of the lodge not to mention that I had full access to use the kitchen if I wished. The fresh ingredients were served beautifully with a three course meal. Yea and coffee bar opened at your disposal. Mary acted as our concierge and gave us suggestions for dinner locations.
