The Northern Rail Traincar Inn delivered exactly what they advertised and more. My husband and I…read morestayed at this Inn while visiting our retirement property up in Two Harbors. This Inn sparkles with cleanliness! I notice details like baseboards, corners and shelves. Each railcar is decorated in a different theme. We stayed in the newly appointed Lighthouse Room. The lamps were shaped like lighthouses, the room was tastefully decorated with Lighthouse pictures and memorabilia, and the hallway that connects each railcar was built reminiscent of a rail yard and train station. When I called to make the reservation. I actually spoke with one of the owners. Cindy. She was personable and friendly. She is the epitome of a fantastic bed& breakfast-type Innkeeper. We met her at the Inn and she was funny and very welcoming. The food was good. They had your typical fare offered at most hotels. The only reason they didn't get a 5 star rating from me is I feel like they could develop a "trademark item" with their breakfast to go with the theme as well. The location is perfect for a quiet weekend or even a Northshore vacation. It's nestled in the wilderness and just a very short ride to Lake Superior. I highly recommend this Inn if you would like to relive some locomotive history!

This hotel is an absolute joy to stay in. Yes the rooms are extremely small, but of course you…read morewould expect that. It's just so much fun to stay here and bonus- you can watch local wildlife right from your window. Rooms were clean, and the managers offer a plethora of games and movies you can borrow- which is just fun! Be careful not to run in the halls though- it makes noise, and the managers will quell it immediately (which is a good thing, my kids just didn't realize it as I think we were the only ones staying there at the time.)

Location - The hotel is right in downtown which puts it close to various restaurants, fast food, gas stations, and shops. You can walk right to main street where a lot of fun shops are located. You are also right on Lake Superior and can walk to the shore and marina from the hotel. The hotel looks out over the lake and marina, great beautiful views. Building & Rooms - The hotel is designed to look like an older hotel that was found in Ashland and they made sure to mimic many of the original hotel's features. It was a very beautiful hotel building and the fact that it sits right on the lake is a huge bonus. Rooms are pretty roomy. Ours was a suite that included a small kitchenette, separate bedroom, and nice size living room. Amenities - The hotel has a pool but NO hot tub. Bummer. The pictures online showed that at one point there was a hot tub as well but it looks like that has been filled in with concrete and turned into seating area. The pool was heated so it wasn't a total loss. We still had fun. There is a beautiful sitting room off the hotel lobby that is styled to look like something you would see in the late 1800's. Great place for family pictures for a holiday card or just to crack open a good book. Food - Rate includes free continental breakfast. The choices are typical to what you will find at a middle of the line hotel - various cold continental choices with a hot buffet including eggs, breakfast meat, and a waffle bar. They upped their choices by offering Monin syrups and drink toppings for their coffee bar. There is also a nice restaurant that overlooks the lake in the basement of the hotel. We did not eat there but it looked like a nice place. Vibe - Very chill, higher rate middle-class hotel. Many people staying were going out and seemed to be on holiday. Reality vs. Online - Online pictures that I saw on their website matched the quality and condition of the hotel and rooms. It met my expectations. The only downside was the missing hot tub. Boo! Price & Final Verdict - Price was right and the location was solid. This would be a five star review but I'm docking one star off because of no hot tub. That is a deal breaker for our family and it sucks to come off the road after a long day expecting to enjoy a nice hot soak and then not have it. We would probably stay again (just with managed expectations) though if we find ourselves back in Ashland.

Restaurant overpriced and food mediocre, although service was very good. "Free breakfast" a joke: powdered eggs, a dearth of muffins, white bread- not at all tasty. We will never return. Over priced.

We love to tent up in the north shore during fall colors season. We aren't great at planning ahead…read moreso we scramble to find a campground.t he state parks are always booked months in advance, so it's the small private campgrounds in the area we enjoy. This one is sitting right on the lax lake. Every campsite will have some sort of view of the lake with some trees but it is not heavily wooded. You can see your neighbor but you're not packed in their like some campsites without any trees. Each campsite had plenty of space with a picnic table and a fire pit. I was a little disappointed in the one car rule because there was so much space to fit two cars and two tents at one campsite. It seems more of a family oriented campground that would be great for kids. We don't have any, so the kids got a little annoying for us. Especially when they are playing and yelling outside at seven in the morning. The bathrooms and quarter operated showers are well kept, clean and aren't far from any of the tent sites. The office is adorable and has a decent selection of snacks and camping things, like fire firewood, if you forget anything. You can also rent kayaks and pontoons for the lake. I felt that the tent sites were a little on the higher side for a campground but understandably so being on a lake with full bathroom, showers and laundry.
