As anyone who has an elderly family member, it can be tough trying to decide whether they are fit to live alone at home, move in with family, or move to an assisted living facility. A family member of ours living in Denver with parkinson's and anxiety who was living at home alone, was taken here for rehabilitation when she had fallen. During her time in Gardens on Quail's nursing home she was able to recover, but decided to stay. She, as well as our family, decided that it was a safer and better lifestyle to continue living under the care of Gardens on Quail's nurses. Since moving in, her anxiety has been much less severe, and she has made many new friends. Not to mention that it is a beautiful place to call home. Many of our family members are living in Denver, so it makes for an easy drive being located just outside the city in Arvada. Speaking from an employees perspective: I have been on with the team for about 8 months now. I've worked in the field for 8 years ( so as you can imagine, I've had training and experience in several facilities) This place was absolutely draining, on all levels. The façade of a beautiful building, and well lit gardens, and exceptional " Care provided to the residents" is absolute delusion. I have watched our team, my residents whom I provide care to, and my own well being turn completely downhill, which is why I feel the need to speak on this. Management and HR are not friendly, or welcoming or empathetic towards care staff at all, instead they are rude and entitled and walk the building with nothing but a higher demeanor, than those who actually provide care to these residents and work extremely hard on the floor providing care, and respect and constant interaction to these residents. I have not had a single, welcoming or open minded- conversation with any management since our previous HR has left the building. I have instead ran into conversations where those who do their jobs, and do an amazing job at it, are consistently belittled by HR and management. Yet, those who are lazy but favorited by management are constantly allowed passes for behaviors and LACK of care to these residents. The job itself is stressful, yes. But we all get into this field even as Caregivers to do our jobs and do the best we can. We also have lives outside of work environments, and some harder than others. This is where survival mode and flight of fight play a role- but to those that show up everyday and WORK THE FLOOR- we are discarded and picked apart -daily, but also while being extremely understaffed and drained ourselves. Yet still- NO support from our HR or ED or management as a whole. I have never felt so out of touch with a work environment claiming to do so much good for these residents- meanwhile disregarding and completely out of touch with their employees whom actually work with these residents and are the ones providing care. Pay compensation and expectations are not lined up at all. all this goes to say- Please DO BETTER, for our residents, for your care staff. for OURSELVES. No job should be or feel this draining on every level. read more

Fall for a pretty facade and this is what you will get! I won't deny that this is one of the most beautiful facilities in town but, scratch the surface and this is what you will REALLY find: * Repeated reviews about understaffing during the night * Repeated reviews complaining about overworked night aides * Repeated reviews where family members are suspicious of, or flat out accuse staff members of creating positive reviews (this explains why so many reviews go from 5 stars down to one star) How do I know about their problems? First, I am a nurse educator with a master's degree in nursing. Second, I reviewed Colorado's State Licensure discipline made against Gardens on Quail. LICENSURE DISCIPLINE: On 3/19/23, Gardens on Quail's license was disciplined for what the state of Colorado labeled "Physical Abuse". An older woman was found tied to her wheelchair which is against the law. Allow me to explain WHY these sort of events happen: when a facility is understaffed and aides are overworked, they were simply trying to keep their patient safe. FAILURE TO MAINTAIN POWER BACK-UP Other problems: a few weeks ago the facility had a power outage and their emergency power generator did not work. When the heaters stopped working, my dad got cold, so he pressed his call light. It was not working either! While trying to seek help, he went into the dark and uninhabited hallway, fell, and laid there for an undisclosed period of time. IT IS A STATE REQUIREMENT THAT MEDICAL FACILITIES MAINTAIN BACK-UP POWER. I asked three staff members if my dad had his walker or wheelchair with him when he was lying on the floor in the dark hallway and no one seemed to know any details, nor did they get back to me. INSUFFICIENTLY TRAINED NURSE AIDES (called QMAPS) If your loved one resides here, PLEASE, TAKE IT UPON YOURSELF TO CLOSELY SUPERVISE MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION because it is being performed by nurse aides who underwent a short med training program. My dad kept getting repeat eye infections. He then revealed the aide was violating infection control practices by touching the eye dropper to his eye. The nurse aide also did not know how to properly administer eye drops because they mixed two different types of drops, instead of waiting between the different prescriptions. This could potentially make eye drops ineffective. read more

If you are looking for a beautiful placed for your loved one this may be the place. However, if the care for your loved one is paramount this is NOT the facility!!! My mother was is memory care for only 6 weeks until she fell, broke her hip and died!! The staff seems wonderful but the "care plan" we meticulously wrote out was never followed! My mom was given medication at the wrong times, given PRN medication she didn't need, her oxygen, she required at all times was not put back on her after transferring from the dining room, hourly checks (which we paid extra for) were never fulfilled. The staff are caregivers not CNA's, the head nurse is not an RN but an LPN and the backgrounds of the director and marketing director are from Best Buy!! The monthly cost was $10,900 and when I asked for a line item account I was sent something so confusing an accountant couldn't not even decipher. We had four adult family members in constant contact with the staff, administrators and had multiple daily visits and lots of promises were made that were never followed through! I feel so bad for families who don't have the time to be in this much contact and are relying on this facility to care for their loved ones! It is a travesty!! read more

A few years ago my Grandmother lost her husband (my Papa) of 57 years. After his passing, life and living alone became too much for her to bear. She was hesitant as moving to an assisted living facility would be quite a significant change to the life she was accustomed to. To be honest, my family and I were as well. It is never an easy decision and in my mind I was going to be "sending a loved one away"... Well I am here to tell you that my train of thinking was completely incorrect. I didn't send a loved one away. In fact, the complete opposite. Due to the outstanding staff and facility, I was helping her gain HAPPINESS and a reinvigorated LIFE again. Gardens on Quail has significantly improved my Grandmother's quality of life, happiness and has helped aid her in her loneliness being without my Papa. Not only that, but it's provided my family and I great peace of mind. The staff is FANTASTIC! The management, INCREDIBLE. I don't often post reviews but this facility most certainly deserves it. This is a team of folks who truly care about the work they provide to the people we love most. It's not often you find such genuine, hard working people you can trust anymore. We chose Gardens on Quail for mom's rehab a few years ago followed by a short stay in their assisted living. With Garden's assistance mom got stronger and moved back home. Unfortunately her disease made her weak and sick and it was clear she needed full time skilled care. We again chose Gardens. We trust them. The entire staff was kind, loving, attentive, and all around wonderful to our mom. Mom loved the food prepared by a talented chef. There were many activities and themed celebrations, but mom loved going outside and seeing the gardens. We would spend a good deal of time talking about the roses. Mom needed a great deal of care, she was in hospice care during her final months, and the entire staff made sure she knew she was loved. read more

First of all, I went through the reviews before I sat down to write mine. My mother was sent there from the hospital for rehab so she could return home safely from Lutheran Hospital. We toured Gardens and everything was nice and couldn't have had a better experience. That was until she actually got sent there. I relied on my niece to be there the afternoon that they sent her to Gardens on Quail. I went to visit her the following day to find her in hysterics and concerned. She was trying to explain what had been happening between chocking tears. Once I finally got it all out of her what was wrong, I immediately asked to speak to the Terri who had given us the tour initially. I told Terri that this was completely unexeptable and wasn't going to tolerate it. She sent in a social worker who couldn't have cared less about the issues and that was very apparent by her demeanor. I elected to spend the night with her to see just what was going on. That night, she put her button on to go to the restroom. She has to go frequently due to her kidney issue. We waited and we waited. Finally after waiting for 15 minutes I went out to the nurses station (right across the hall from my mother), told the nurse that I needed her help. She came in and finally got my mother to the restroom. I was totally appaulled with what she told me. She explained that she, the nurse, was responsible for chart notes and that the one and only CNA on duty during the night was the one responsible for taking patients to the bathroom at night. I really would love to see the nurses duties on a sheet of paper. Rarely did you see the CNA and when you did, you could tell that she was exhausted. I cannot believe that the nurse is just supposed to sit on her behind to chart notes and give meds. Good thing none of the patients were having a heart attack waiting Three times I had to physically go and get the nurse. Two of those times, she was busy flirting with another guy who I assume works there. I watched and he stood at the nursing station for 30 - 60 minutes flirting and laughing. Don't expect the night nurse on the weekend to have any ethics and I would really be interested in where she received her nursing degree as she must have slept through her classes. A nurse is a nurse and I expect them to act as such. The weekend nurse that weekend was no different than a glorified receptionist. Now my mother wasn't the only one who was having issues with the staff. The following day when I came to see her, she was in the dinning room sitting with some other women. Sitting there while they ate and conversed I heard that one poor woman, the left sitting on the toilet for 45 minutes before anybody came in to take her back to bed while another one was supporting a black bruise up by her right eye. They didn't lower her bed and she ended up falling out of it and laid on the floor for hours before anybody came in to check on her. I can't help but wonder what that useless nurse was doing to protect her patients, obviously, her patients don't mean a damn thing to her. I am so sorry that my mother had to have these issues. She has enough with her health problems and then have to deal with incompetent, lazy and uncaring nurses. I can't blame the CNA but I do hold those nurses responsible for the patients that she has been intrusted with. Think twice before letting this place take care of your loved one!!!!!! read more

This community is stunning and sets the bar high for assisted living standards. The courtyard is an unmatched amenity and they do a great job at keeping the grounds maintained. Our mom was here in the Rehab Center for almost three weeks in January 2020. We chose Gardens on Quail because of the wonderful atmosphere and the friendly staff. In looking at the other reviews, it is clear which ones are made from actual patient's family members, and which ones are from staff or their friends- especially the ones patting the administrator Sara on the back for her dedication to duty :/ Our 88-year-old mother was in this place for 21 days and we sure never saw her nor had her reach out to us to see how our experience was going. First of all, the place is beautiful, there's no denying that. It's one of the nicest places in Denver, but that's where the positives end. From the very first day it was a nightmare. Her medication was always late if she even got it all. I would ask for it at 1 o'clock, when it was due at noon, and get it sometimes it 530. There was not a single day where there was not an issue with her medication. There were a couple of good CNA's but not nearly enough to make a difference- especially at night. The place is huge and you could never find a nurse- too many places for them to hide and disappear and there were never enough of them anyway. Every time you try to hunt one down, no matter who you did find, they don't know where are your nurse is and most act irritated at you and each other all the time. No matter what you ask them, they all shift the blame and are continually watching their back's, throwing each other under the bus. It is an atmosphere of employees doing as little as possible while pretending to do much, much more. There is no genuine connection with the patients. They don't act like they know how to work with the elderly, much less enjoy it. The food is substandard, tastes terrible and has such poor quality meats I wouldn't feed it to my dog. Speaking of dogs, as another commentor said, the staff is allowed to bring their pets. A lot of elderly are afraid of animals, one of them jumped up on my mom, scratched and scared her, even though she has a dog she loves, and yes I often thought of the people with severe illnesses who should probably not be exposed to them. Back to the quality of care.. There is just not enough staff. every day they bring them out into the common area in the morning and then back-and-forth for meals but there are patients you will see out there for sometimes the whole day -bored out of their mind and scared out of their wits and stuck in wheechairs for hours and hours.There is about 30 patients in each area and at night no more than two staff members to get them all into bed. One of the nights I was there, one of the CNA's had a back injury so the other one was having to get them all out of the common area and each one into bed. The residents ask you, beg you, to help them. They are always freezing, they are thirsty, they need a tissue, they need you to pick something up, they need help to the restroom, they beg you to find a nurse to take them to the restroom - some of them wait 15 to 30 minutes for a staff member to come and take them to the bathroom. My mother has severe dementia but she has PTSD from pushing her call button over and over at night and yelling as loud as she could for help, please help, to come take her to the bathroom - she says for hours, and I'm not sure I don't believe it -we saw patients do the same thing over and over again. My mom required further treatment and at the end of the 21 days they practically threw her out on the street. She had major hip surgery from a fall and I got there the day that we were supposed to move to a partner facility and they asked me if I was going to take her over there in my car, a little Honda Civic /with pins and rods in her hip! I said no, could the van take her over there ir the other facility come get her and they told me no. I sat in her room all day and then all of a sudden they show up with a luggage cart and the van driver and tell me the other facility can't take her and we're transporting her all the way across town to another partner facility. They had us out of there in 15 minutes -luckily I already packed But it was so extremely stressful. The other facility is Saint Pauls Care Center, Colovaria partner. Everything I just said about this place - turn it around a 180 and that is Saint Paul's. I cannot say enough wonderful things about it -other than it is it nearly as nice aesthetically, but who cares? I have nothing but bad to say about this place & its staff. The whole place is LAZY, INCOMPETENT, STUPID, UNPROFESSIONAL & TOTALLY DISRESPECTFUL. Sara the Admin is the worst. She is defensive & does not give 2 shits about patients & families. My wife was there & got NO OR VERY SUB-PAR CARE. Feeble attempts to see a doctor were unsuccessful & she never saw a doctor until I had to get involved. I could go on for hours, But this should say it all. Our recent experience at Gardens had its ups and downs. My husband was there to recoup from a very serious accident. Broken back, 6 fractured ribs, torn spleen, head trauma. Used a walker and brace. Problems started when a nurse was getting him up, and I yelled out to get his brace. She said"what brace". I replied that he had a broken back. Her reply "I didn't know that!!" Later we were told by another nurse that his file was so thick they didn't read it!!!! He was accused of smoking MJ when the smell came from one of their staff. He DID NOT use!!!!!!!!! He had to adjust and start up his own CPAP machine. No help. If it dropped he had to leave it. He was told by an OT at night that he was going to be discharged. Not a Dr or nurse to discuss this. Upon discharge he was walked to the elevator by a staff member, pushing a luggage cart. She got a phone call and left him. He had to push the luggage cart on and off the elevator by himself to the car waiting for him. I was outraged at this. I called the administrator, Sarah Dent, to discuss all of these problems. She called back just when I got home from the hospital from surgery. I couldn't talk then. I tried calling back 4-5 times. No return call. When I finally got thru to Sarah Dent, the administrator of the entire facility, she hung up on me and refused to hear about the complaints. I was able to report it to the owners. I would NOT RECOMMEND this facility. Our treatment by Ms Dent was deplorable. We were going thru enough without her treatment and lack of interest and compassion read more

The Gardens on Quail is a beautiful clean place. The rooms are real nice. The only problem was we had to hire extra help to see after our loved one as she sometimes tried to get up alone. We ask that they put an alarm on her but we were told that by law they could not use them. For the money we were spending per month I thought they would take care of our loved one but we had to have a person stay with her all the time. Other than that it is a great place. read more

My family member is currently staying here and they forgot her medication twice in the first day, another nurse charted that she gave her medications when she infact did not. This almost led to her being rushed to the hospital. Certain nurses are sweet and helpful, while others need to chose a new career path. Perhaps one that doesn't involve working with patients. When pressing the call button, allow about 15 minutes for anyone to respond, because that's how long it will take. read more

This is my second review from another experience with family. Had chosen the rehab location due to insurance constraints and closeness to my home but things have certainly gotten worse over the past 2 years. I had heard comments from community members that now make much more sense. The meals are average and some days better than others. Certainly not what I would expect for a high end place they advertise themselves to be. Dining staff really nice and they get 5 stars. Nursing staff very disinterested in quality of patient care and lack of communication in general. Many were temp agencies workers and that is not an asset with the agency they chose to work with. I spent most every day and nite there for 5 weeks so you see a lot and talk to many families and this was a common thread in our discussions. Some nursing staff down right rude when it wasnt warranted and I carried alot of the care burden for my brother including showers and overnite stays as well as trying to be available if he was having a rough day. There was 2 nurses and one CNA that were great and wished I could remember your names but that is about it. One nurse Alyssa went postal one nite and despite a call from staff to their supervisor no one from GOQ came to dismiss her even when the patients were clearly unsafe during that shift. The PT/OT rehab teamwere nice and trying hard but you could see they were clearly rushed and not given the time to invest in patient outcomes. Since this is rehab and Medicare requires positive outcomes for reimbursement might have made this a priority instead of Kentucky Derby. The call system doesnt distinguish which room of the suites the call is placed from so that delayed care and often we were asked " did you ring" and sometimes when we were deep asleep. This also was a problem when staff tried to give wrong medication and report wrong patient blood pressures that were critical component of his recovery. The facility has assisted living and there was one gentleman who would walk his dog in the evening often with his pants hanging down so you could see his bottom which is a dignity issue and staff would observe this but not attempt to correct. The dog was often outside in the parking lot off the leash and in the driveway with the owner inside and I almost hit the dog one nite which would have broke my heart. The doors lock at a set time so both owner and dog surprisingly did not get locked out in the cold. Not sure what to make of that either. Receptionist seldom was there and if I did see her she made no effort to greet visitors or present a warm welcoming place. The mattresses on the bed are awful and hard. Dont let them try to sell you on how expensive they are when none if us would chose to sleep on one. Another thing that stood out was that they pushed families into hiring private caregivers if they wanted their loved ones to be allowed to rehab there when you could see some of these residents could have been managed by a conscientious and caring staff that are missing here. They also try to push the Safe Serve Agency as a preferred provider. Many of their staff are poorly trained and unreliable so look elsewhere if they try to sell you this agency. This was another mistake we made trusting their revommendation. I did my homework after our own experience with caregiver walking out in the middle of the night unknown to anyone that this agency tends to have more problems than most. If you have to use this rehab, be present and pop in at random times when they are not expecting you. I would use a nanny cam and my biggest regret was not having my phone handy to record Allyssa reign of terror that continued from 8 PM until I left at 730 am. That was priceless. So best of luck if this becomes an option. Might look at Accel at Golden Ridge as better choice in this area read more

Please - Do not allow yourself to be fooled by the beautiful appearance of the building. Don't be fooled by the warm smiles and expressed reassurances that your loved one will be in good hands. THEY WONT BE! My mother was admitted to the rehabilitation section of the facility; recovering from neck surgery and a secondary surgery to address infection (from a drain tube). She was on Vancomycin (administered daily via an IV "Infusion Pump" controlled drip - this was the primary reason she required inpatient services). She was wearing a neck brace with Doctor ordered restrictions on what she could do and could not do (i.e. do not raise arms above head - use your walker - etc). Starting on day one (1) throughout her stay (approximately 5 weeks) the list of alarming concerns exponentially grew. From shocking / unsanitary practices of staff not wearing gloves to administer the IV... Not putting the cap on the IV.... Allowing the cap to fall on the floor and then using it on the IV.... (1-time) neglecting to administer the Vancomycin via the infusion pump (thus allowing the medication to be quickly administered - consequently causing my mom to experience "Red Man Syndrome"; a serious / painful allergic reaction.) PT insisted she walk Backwards (without her walker) while the Therapist tossed an 18" rubber ball at her; asking her to catch it in the air (arms above her head while healing from neck surgery). The list goes on and on... from major concerns as mentioned above to frustration with the poor quality of meals served. I sincerely feel this facility needs to be looked into (i.e., a review of training records, audit / review of Standard Operating Procedures, etc) . While there, I met other patience / residents - Trust me, the carelessness was not unique to only my mother's care. There are some very "Good" people working there - and there are some very concerning folks working there too. I seriously place the blame on Poor Management and Administration. Keep looking... without major changes... You don't want to leave a loved one at Gardens on Quail. read more

I have worked in healthcare in various capacities for 30 years and been employed by the Gardens' management company for a total of 5 years and have yet to have come across a better company for which to work. The focus on delivering patient direct and centered care is second to none and it is clearly reflected in our consistent approach to giving compassionate resident care. The building itself is warm, stylish and homelike. From dietary to nursing and from maintenance to therapies, each department does it's part to deliver excellent care and service to the guests. Like in Lisa S's review I have to believe that the 5 star reviews, that all seem to mysteriously mention Sarah Dent, were written by employees or people who didn't stay there. My wife had triple bypass heart surgery and needed a rehab facility for a couple weeks afterwords. Gardens had one of the highest ratings on the Medicare website so we chose them. The day we arrived we were told they were short staffed and to "hang in there." We arrived at 3pm, they weighed her and then left her in the wheelchair in her room. We saw a few administrators who came to get paperwork signed and they brought her dinner, but the first instance of any actual medical care came at almost midnight when they finally brought her her evening medications. I won't bore you with all the details but the care was horrible and the attitude was even worse.. Without speaking to her doctors her pain medication was decreased by 70%, still not sure why.(It has me wondering if they were trying to save money or if someone might have been stealing her pain meds) She was on a pain contract due to also having Spinal Stenosis, which she is scheduled for surgery for soon. A number of things happened that were completely ignored, a large one day weight gain, vomiting, no bowel movement for the whole week and anytime she complained she was treated like she was just complaining to complain. 1 week to the day after arriving I took her to a doctors appointment. Thank god. The doctor took one look at her progress and promptly readmitted her to the hospital with dehydration, an increased potassium level and kidney failure, which her doctor said was just short of lethal. I type this sitting in her hospital room. The doctor told us in no uncertain terms that if she needs to go back to rehab she's not going anywhere near Gardens. I don't normally do "reviews" or anything like that but this was so bad that I feel it's my duty to warn people not to take their loved ones here. My mother was sent to this place for rehab. She was deaf and unable to see well. We used a dry erase board so she could read. She was there because of a toe amputation and wound care. The staff scared her to death. The p.a. would not use the wipe off board because it was too much. I had to do it. The communication with the family was awful. They would schedule doctors appointments without our knowledge and provide transport to appointment that was subpar. They also caused a new wound that had become infected. I would not send my dog there. read more
