We take our chocolate lab to Garner Animal Hospital weekly for doggie daycare, and board him overnight as well. We have never had a bad experience and they always take the BEST care of our dog. I have had a tough time writing my review because the events of the day were so horrific. I am disabled and have been fortunate to have Baxter (poodle mix) by my side for the last eight years after complications with my kidney transplant. If you have a therapy dog, you understand how strong the relationship is between the patient and the dog. Baxter has a sixth sense about my ups and downs and responds accordingly. I honestly don't know how I would have made it without my buddy by my side 24/7. Because of being immunocompromised, I spent the majority of the ~1-1/2 years of Covid isolation with no humans in my room. Baxter was such an important part of me coping with the isolation. We live in Lawrence. A couple of weeks ago, my daughter was looking to purchase a house on Gardner Lake. We had just finished up with the realtor and my husband and daughter were going to take Baxter and our 1-1/2-year-old Teddy Bear dog for a quick walk before heading home to Lawrence. I was laying in the car when I heard screams. Two Old English Bulldogs came out of nowhere. One of the bulldogs viciously attacked Baxter and intended to kill him. He also bit my husband (requiring stitches). Fortunately, my daughter and our little Teddy Bear were not bit. My husband wrapped Baxter in his flannel shirt, and we headed to the nearest animal hospital. There was so much blood in our car for such a little dog. While the events of that day are horrible, I am so grateful that the nearest hospital was the Gardner Animal Hospital. Dr. Mertz, Dr Like, and the other employees at the hospital did an amazing job. They brought Baxter back right away and prepped him for surgery. Dr. Mertz worked on him for almost four hours. She was able to reattach his front leg. It is an absolute miracle. We are so lucky Baxter is alive but to have his leg saved is such a blessing. I am sure that most vets would have amputated. Baxter won't have full use of his leg, but he is already putting some pressure on the paw. The ongoing care has been outstanding. We have a long journey ahead, but I know he is getting the absolute best care around. There is still an open wound, so Dr. Mertz is currently doing a skin graft surgery. I have been so impressed with everyone at the hospital. They obviously love Baxter already (he is a very loveable dog). We are coming in almost every day to treat the wound and to do light therapy on his front leg. Even though we live in Lawrence, Dr. Mertz, Dr. Like and the rest of the hospital employees have been very important in Baxter's life. We will continue bringing Baxter to the Gardner Hospital for his ongoing care. I still am trying to get my head around the attack. My dogs are little. They were on a short leash. They weren't barking. They were walking in the road in the middle of the day. I never thought my husband, daughter, or the dogs could have been in danger. I do think that we will carry a small club when we walk in the future to better protect us. It is a shame that carrying a club is necessary, but it is the only thing that might have lessened the severity of the attack. I hope someone reading this will take steps to ensure they don't experience this type of attack. My thanks and high praise again to the Gardner Animal Hospital for saving my buddy. I honestly don't know how I would have managed if he died from the attack. Everyone at the hospital treats us like family and Baxter like he is their dog. I will be forever grateful. read more

Dr. Mertz and staff have always gone above and beyond to take the time and listen to what I'm saying about my pets. I've been going there for 15+ years now and after just leaving after my "new puppy appointment" for the newest member of our family, I know that this is the ONLY place I'd go. The boarding facilities are top notch under Sherry's direction, and the staff reflects that. Dr. Mertz has built relationships with us, and other people we have referred, that will keep us coming back. The staff are professional and welcoming but I can't in good conscious leave this place a positive review. I took my dog to get what should have been a standard spay. I am now aware it was performed by a temporary doctor who was covering for Dr. Smith during her maturity leave. A few months after the initial operation my dog went into heat which I assumed was a UTI because my dog was supposed to be spayed and couldn't possibly be in heat, right? 3 visits, 2 surgeries, 1 week of waiting for blood work to get processed from Cornell university and my dog is finally spayed. After the second surgery Dr. Mertz's explanation was "somehow we just messed up and forgot to take the second ovary out". That was literally what she said to me. I couldn't believe it. In my mind that is unacceptable from a licensed veterinarian. If they can mess up something that should be as standard as a spay then I hate to think how they would handle a more complex procedure. Even though they refunded the bloodwork costs and completely covered the cost of the second surgery (they were prepared to charge my girlfriend $530) I would be hesitant to take my dog there again unless it's an emergency. I don't want her to relive all that trauma. read more

I have nothing but positive things to say about Dr. Mertz and the facility as a whole. I felt compassion, and my Shepherd, Creed was treated like a rock star. He is heartworm negative thanks to Dr. Mertz. I thought she was amazing, and always took the time to answer all of my questions. Also, the whole staff was kind, and full of compassion. I love Gardner Animal Hospital and yes I will continue to bring my beloved fur baby back for everything, follow ups and whatever he needs. We were both treated with kindess and respect from all staff and everyone answered all my questions I had from food to shots to just general cat behavior questions. Had to bring our female corgi in on an emergency having never used this place before. Typically I've always driven my pack clear over to Lee's Summit to my trusted Vet of many years. But, after jumping off of the bed, our little girl acted like she had sprained or done worse to her little leg. Getting all the way over to LS in morning rush hour wasn't an option so we went down the street to have her looked at. Now, I worked for my current Vet for five years and I also have an animal science degree. I'm not a moron to most Vet - world things. My husband drops her off and they end of keeping her all day. They shoot x-rays on their ancient - hand-develop-the-films machine. Then called us and said they needed to shoot the films again. Then another call saying nothing was broken, probably just sore or slightly sprained. At this point she's been there the entire day. At 5 I went to pick her up, already irritated that she's been there the entire day for x-rays. I waited for 35 minutes before the Vet came in after dealing with the moderately rude receptionist. She was very awkward and immediately opened up about how long her day was and how she was supposed to go home by noon for vacation, but was still there so close to 6 with tons of patients in the back, etc. She pulls the films out and lights them up to show me that our Corgi's leg was fine but that the elbow was oddly formed, which was for some reason, a concern to her. Yes, their elbows are oddly formed. She is a Corgi. (This was also said by my Vet when I told him this.) They have oddly formed, misshaped elbows. Then she points out this area in her lungs that didn't look great on the film. Casted shadow/foggy looking and said she was concerned about that. Obviously that's concerning to hear from someone but she's never had any breathing issues outside of allergies that's she always had since she was a pup. She wanted to look more into it and I shut her down at that point because the way she approached it and the way she talked about was bleeding in the tone of "money money money." I said I would like to transfer the films to my Vet to have them reviewed and then have them sent back to her. She said no, because they were her only copies from her old machine and she has to keep them. *Yea, Vets have to keep them. When the clinic I worked in had the old machine, we shot the same way and kept the films. It's required by law. However, you can send the films to another clinic and have them returned very quickly. We did this numerous times for other Vets and specialty clinics.* At this point I said I'd follow up with my Vet and needed to be on my way. She snarked at me that it would be awhile because Sadie had been sedated all day and she had to reverse it. Why? Why was my corgi, who has no history of aggression or any issues at the Vet, sedated for an entire day? "I had to sedate her for the x-rays." That was the answer I received. The x-rays were shot in the morning hours. There is no reason she should have been sedated for the entire day. And she's never been sedated for an x-ray before either. In my past experience, patients were only sedated in cases of extreme trauma or aggression by permission of the owner, for an x-ray. Yes, some dogs turn into assholes at the Vet behind closed doors, but I have always seen and been complimented on how well behaved she always is. After all of this we went home after paying a hefty bill and pain pills which she didn't really need by the next day. She was using the leg after an hour of being home. Following up with my Vet the next day, we reshot the x-rays on her chest, with a newer-digital machine and her lungs and throat were crystal clear with no issues to be found. We also reshot her leg and elbow and no issues or deformities were to be found. It was just a normal shaped Corgi leg. My Vet was largely concerned about how she was evaluated and how we were treated overall. Expressing concern over the day long sedation. Needless to say there's no way we'll ever use this clinic in Gardner again or would we ever recommend it. It was only after this situation that our neighbors said that they used the Vet on the other side of town or Olathe because of their bad experiences with the Gardner Clinic. read more

I regret using taking my pet to this business. Very unprofessional, no one introduced themselves when I took my pet in for vaccinations and a physical, not even the vet. I made an appointment with their grooming department and regret that even more. I should have followed my gut feeling. Even with specific requests and providing the groomer with a photo with 3 different angles, the cut is horrible. My dog's beard was completely shaved off even though I specifically requested it to be left but trimmed. Uneven cut throughout. Communication is terrible, I was told that I could pick my dog up "way before 3pm" but she was not ready until after 4pm. I was told that I had been sent a text an hour and a half before 4:11pm saying my dog was ready to be picked up. Never got that text. I called at 2:30 pm , they said 30 more minutes and they would call. No call. After the 4:11pm call I had hung up after almost 10 minutes on hold. I got a call two minutes later from the Grooming front desk person saying my dog was ready for pick up. Really? It took 1.5 hours to give me a call? One person tells me she has been ready for pick up for 1.5 hours prior to 4:11 pm and that I was notified via text which I never received and the phone number she listed was correct otherwise I would not have been sent a subscription text for their messaging service and then the confirmation text that I was now subscribed. So this is what I mean by awful communication. Never again will I take any pet there. If there was an option for zero stars I'd choose that. read more

Dr. Mertz has treated my 14 year old lab for years and my 8 year old Boston Terrier. She is fantastic with both but especially with my lab. She really understands how much my dogs mean to me and has taken really good care to help extend my lab's quality of life. My lab Kaia has very bad hip dysphasia and Dr. Mertz told me about Platelet Enhancement Therapy which is minimally invasive and not that expensive. We did the procedure 6 years ago and it totally changed my dog and I highly recommend it. She was moving around again like a puppy and she was 9 when we had the procedure. We started laser therapy 2 years ago to help ease inflammation in her hips due to her old age and it is amazing how much more she moves around after each treatment. Kaia is still running around and has a great attitude because she feels good thanks to Dr. Mertz. We can't thank Dr. Mertz and her awesome staff for everything that they do! Definitely ahead of the game when it comes to treatment and it feels good to walk in and have the staff be friendly and know who you are. read more

Please don't go here! I don't know how this place stays in business. The veterinarians are uneducated and stuck up. The place smells and is filthy. If you have an emergency and leave a message, they say they will call you back. I'm still waiting on a call from them and it's been a couple weeks! I can't give this place any positive feedback at all. Despite hearing horrid things about this place left and right, I decided to ignore all the negative chatter and give it chance and I took my dog and two cats there out of pure convenience. Big mistake. Dr. Mertz is incredibly cold, arrogant, and just plain rude. Front desk gals are not friendly, and the whole place is incredibly dirty. The techs are about the only friendly thing about this place. The final straw was when my cat got sick and puked for two weeks, I got really worried and took him in. They do an X-ray, blood-work. Dr. Smith, who by the way, she's friendly but needs to possibly sharpen her skills on cat anatomy., that or she's trying to be as much money as she can out of you. She tells me he has a blockage, near where his throat and stomach meet. And that his intestines look like they squished up and possible dead bowels. She suggests, barium X-rays, ultrasound, etc., and then open him up. Meanwhile this is costing thousands and here I am thinking I'm going to have to put down this poor 1 1/2 year old cat. I tell her to let me take him home and she sends wet food hoping it'll help. I then call the vet where I adopted him from, they see him the next day, I brought the X-rays from Gardner Animal Hospital with me, the vet at the new office THOROUGHLY examined him, reviewed his X-rays, took a digital X-ray, he determined he has an obstruction in his colon, I asked about what Dr. Smith had said, as I pointed to the areas she was concerned about, he said that is a picture of his lungs and stomach and they looked great, wasn't a blockage in that area it was his organs! I then asked about the squished twisted up bowels, he said they looked fine, Dr Smith also said he was dehydrated, the new vet said he was completely fine and not dehydrated at all, this wasn't even 24 hours after the visit to Gardner Animal Hospital. After a couple nights of monitoring him at the new vet, they gave him some medication to "push things along" and if didn't work they would open him up and do surgery right where it was at, no performing test after unnecessary test. In the end he came out great and is healthy, and if I would have stuck with what Gardner Animal Hospital told me I would of spent thousands by now, this was a few hundred dollars with the new vet. It seems Gardner Animal Hospital tries to scam a lot of innocent people, make sure you get a second opinion before making any rash decisions with this place. I would love to rave about how wonderful the new vet is, but I'm sure I'm allowed to, but it's in Leawood, KS. NEVER again will take any of my pets to Gardner Animal Hospital! read more
