Nice little bakery nestled by the train tracks in St James on Lake Avenue. The renovation really opened up the space and made the entrance more inviting. However it's hit or miss purchasing Kaiser rolls. It's amazing how quickly they "sell" out by 11am while there are plenty of plain and sesame seed rolls left to purchase. Additionally the size of the rolls had gotten smaller while the price keeps increasing now $1.00 a roll half the size of a roll from other bakeries and deli's. Apple turnovers are very good but again expensive ( flour going up I guess). Staff always friendly and welcoming but I wish someone would run numbers on roll sales so there'd be some Kaiser rolls left to purchase. Varied selection of cookies, pastries and pies and there's a coffee station for those needing a caffeine fix. read more

First time here and looking for the best sweet treat. Coming here towards the end of the day is not the best as many of their items are gone. With an ideal location across the street from the St James train station, I can understand why doughnuts and muffins would be gone. Smart! We picked up eclairs, Napoleons, cream puffs and cannolis to go. The black and white cookie looked really good so we'll come back for that as I'm always on the hunt for the best. The cannoli is a small size and has a distinctive nutmeg flavor. I am not crazy about the green sprinkles though. Crunchy though. The eclair is filled with a custard and the chocolate was discolored. Not sure why. It was okay. I have had the Napoleon or cream puff yet so we will see how they hold up the next day. The store has a nice variety of goodies including decorated cakes, cookies and breads so please give them a try. read more

This bakery is nestled in the center of Saint James, and has been a community institution for a long time, as I have heard. We've lived here for the last four years and have stopped by here a couple of times. The available cakes and pastries are small in selection compared to other nearby bakeries, but are always delicious. Their tea scone is one of my absolute favorite baked goods around. I am giving four stars because there is usually no rhyme or reason regarding what cakes will be available in their case, and I had been told last year that they didn't routinely make rainbow cookie cakes if they couldn't anticipate they would be demanded. I had asked for it a day before my event and was told that the heads up needed to be longer. I found this odd for such a small cake and something they made habitually. However, I saw as recently as last week on Facebook that they plan to have these regularly. The rainbow cookies themselves are great, so I am sure the cake is too! read more

After a hearty meal at BLT Cafe, we came across this place that offers gluten free options. So of course we had to stop in. My wife got the GF brownie and some type of raspberry tart. She didn't enjoy the brownie all so much as she felt it was quite dense. My son got a red velvet cupcake and thought it was just alright. Recently I bought two enormous sprinkle-decorated cupcakes from Garguilos Bakery as a birthday present. But when we tried to eat them, it was a disaster. The cupcakes had a nasty texture, and worse, they tasted like sawdust and axle grease. I was angry and mortified that I had been duped by appearances, and the recipient was miserable. These cupcakes were fairly high-priced, too. I will never spend another penny there. read more

We got a cake and a peach pie from here. Both were completely inedible. The cake was dry and the frosting was worse than jarred icing. The peach pie tasted like the peaches were not fresh and the crust was tasteless. Both items were completely inedible and ended up in the garbage. read more

I have tried this bakery several times and while I see they get a lot of great reviews I have yet to have a good experience here. The staff is usually nice, and the interior looks bright and welcoming... that is where the positives end. In the past I have tried their cookies and cupcakes and found them to be mediocre but acceptable. I also tried their Italian bread a few months ago and it was not good. It had no flavor and lacked any sort of real crust. You can get a better loaf at uncle G's for cheaper. Yet again this week I decided to give them a try when I had unexpected company. I purchased a red velvet cupcake, and two large crumb squares, one raspberry and one chocolate. The red velvet cake had a cherry on top that had gone rancid. My guest had to spit it out and said it tasted fermented and spoiled. Not a good start. We tried the rest of the cupcake, and the frosting tasted greasy and like it sat in a refrigerator with too many other foods and absorbed their flavor, the cake was too dense and also tasted stale. Inedible. The two crumb squares were SO dry and burned on the edges. The raspberry one had an unnatural perfumy aftertaste and the chocolate one left a greasy almost waxy film on your mouth. Needless to say all 3 items went right in the garbage. It was embarrassing to have served these to guests, I would have been better off just going to the supermarket across the street. The dairy barn up the road sells pizza crumbs from Hummel Hummel that are delicious, I should have gone there. I keep hoping this bakery will be good, since it is right in town and I like to support our local businesses, but I will not be back again. read more

I'm sorry to be writing a contrary review to others posted here, but would like to voice my recent experience . First I'll say lovely staff. I ordered several things from the bakery, including carrot cake, chocolate cupcakes, the large crumb cake pie, and velvet cake. Also 2 loaves of bread. The red velvet was dense and dry with a disappointing frosting. The carrot cake lacked flavor and icing was not the cream cheese type typically used on carrot cake, also dry. It seemed that the same frosting was used for both. Sadly the crumb cake topping was also not good. The crumbs tasted as though they were made with lard vs butter , almost tasteless. There was nothing special about the bread. Ive had incredible bread in northports bakery. So for almost 50 $ I walked away not liking anything I purchased . read more

I went here on a Friday morning and purchased a few items: a croissant, a corn muffin, a napoleon, and 3 Italian pastries (sfagliatelle). I had never been here before; I walked from a nearby Nursing home where a relative is in Rehab. We were all extremely disappointed in every item. Nothing tasted fresh or as it should. If I had to guess, I'd say they baked everything last weekend and were selling the remaining stale items. The croissant was dry, with no buttery taste. The sfagliatelle were rubbery and tasteless. The corn muffin was worst of all, no corn flavor, seemed to be mostly wheat flower and dry. I ended up feeding it to my dogs, who aren't very discriminating. To top it off, prices were high for the area. 3.50 for a small corn muffin, for example. This place needs to get its act together. I know they've been in business quite a long time. However, if this is their usual quality of baked goods, I don't think they can last much longer. read more

This lovely bakery is walking distance from my boyfriends house and he has been going there for many years and always Tanya and raves about how great they are and he was not wrong! Very cozy interior and the staff is so sweet! (Pun intended). They have self service coffee station (which I really like) and even though they are a tinier bakery there are plenty of places to sit and relax. The baked goods are delicious. I called at least five different bakeries for a custom baby shower cake and most either sounded irritated by my request, didn't take the time to understand what I was asking for, or charged outrageously unaffordable prices. Gargiulo's, on the other hand, and Mike in particular, were the complete opposite: friendly, responsive, accommodating, and kind, and wanted to make sure he knew exactly what we wanted. We got an absolutely adorable and DELICIOUS baby onesie carrot cake with cream cheese icing. Four days later my guests are still telling me how fantastic that cake was! All fresh ingredients, everything from scratch, filled with pecans, raisins, coconut and cream cheese icing between two moist and not overly sweet cake layers. My whole family has said Gargiulo's is definitely our number one choice for future events! Thanks for making my baby shower special! read more

I love this bakery. There are other bakeries in the area but this is a true family owned and operated place... we just celebrated our first Easter in this, our new home town, and we purchased many of our Easter Staples from Garguilo's and they were awesome!! Delicious.. rolls, buns, Pizza Rustica, Pizza Gran and Cannoli Cake!! I went back for Marble Rye (for the ham sammies of course!) and picked up some cookies... the coffee is warm and fresh and even met a friend for a bite there recently and had soup and some hot rolls... just walking in puts a smile on my face.. and the nice people who work there.. the clean and warm atmosphere.. make it a lovely place in our new town! read more
