Charming place to stay. Beautiful views of the lake.peaceful, quiet. Cannot say enough good things about the kindness of the staff. This was our third stay at Garmisch. We were not impressed however with the dinning experiences at our last visit . Previously the food and the service at the bar and in the restaurant had been outstanding and special . We ate there everyday and evening of our stay. This time , the service was bad, the food service staff seemed stressed and anxious. The food was of very poor quality. Actually tasteless. Friday night fish fry , the entire plate of food was cold. We asked for a change and that plate was again cold. No offer to refund our money. The white table cloth experience was no longer special. Something must have happened to the excellent chef of the past. Truly discouraging. read more

I am reading the other reviews. It seems to be great or miserable. We got miserable. Never again. Our room was furnished with a fridge and microwave; plenty of towels and comfy beds. On arrival to the room it was freezing cold. They said we couldn't adjust the thermostat, but "he" would turn it off since it was early evening. It got better. We arrived on a Thursday and wanted dinner that night. We were told we could only eat at 5:30 as another group was coming in at 7p. So we figured, no biggie. The staff was great but appeared frantic. When my entree arrived the potato pancakes were burned on one side. I ate one anyway. I heard the menu was amazing but I was not impressed. Got a chicken dish, wasn't fond of the sauce, food was hot. Later, came to find out the chef quit the day before so I am not sure who was cooking that day. Went to the bar for dessert and drinks by the lake. Good experience but they charge 1$ for water! I couldn't believe it. You also have to pay for ice, although there are ice buckets in the room. That night was indescribable. I woke at 1 am and thought I was having a hot flash. Covers and clothes came off. But it didn't go away. I woke up every two hours after that until 6 am when my husband woke up and screamed he was hot. It was 80 degrees according to the thermostat. We couldn't open the windows. Later we found out a black button under the sash would let us open it, but no instructions and it was very hard to see. Can we say safety hazard? I threw on a robe and opened the hall door and the tile floors were hot. I made it outside, standing there half undressed but it kept me from cooking. The office wouldn't answer the phone until 8 am. We left to find breakfast somewhere as the dining room does not serve breakfast on weekdays. I put my makeup on in the truck as I kept sweating it off in the room! At the breakfast place (miles away) we learned about the unhappy chef and waitress that left, and the new air conditioning unit that apparently was not working weeks after the installation. On our return we complained and they knocked off $75. We feel they should have comped us that night. My husband laid down good money for two miserable nights. The boat rental was a reasonable fee, the assistant kind and supportive. There are canoes, motor boats, and pontoon boats to rent. The water is warm and clear, so you can swim in the lake. That night, we were freezing cold again. I slept with booties and a sweatshirt jacket and several covers. Better than stewing in my own juices. The shower water smelled like sulfur. Never did find out about that. I mean I could smell it in the room when he opened the bathroom door. And it wasn't him. The water from the bathroom faucet was a dribble. The cleaning staff was very nice and did a good job. The overall structure of the building is well maintained and we loved the historical feel to the lodge. But there are serious management problems here. Phone service is sketchy at best so without an office phone, who knows what could happen? Our concerns were never resolved by management. Why does staff keep quitting? One other thing. We needed to climb a flight of stairs to get to our room, but no one ever asked if we were able to do that. No problem for us, but someone else could have had an issue. If they were full up they would have to look for another room. That could be a problem on a weekend. I'm just saying. Towns nearby, Cable and Hayward, very nice. Went to a Lumberjack Championship which was fun. Cute diners, coffee places, and shopping in Hayward. Visit the R Place diner-- great! Also West Ice Cream Shop and Lynn Marie's Chocolates. But if you stay at Garmisch, know you are taking a chance. read more

72 ladies arrived at Garmisch to walk and kayak and eat lunch today. The weather was lovely, the lake beautiful and the lunch was absolutely fabulous! We are all local. We had a choice of hamburger, chicken sandwich with avocado and red onion, or a mixed salad with grilled shrimp. All came with choice of French fries or sweet potato fries. After years of enjoying the Garmisch, we have experienced a real decline in quality over the last two years, and yesterday evening (5/25/19) marked our final visit. The setting is so lovely, but unfortunately the food was beyond mediocre and the prices were high for the quality. Of the seven meals served, only one person enjoyed her meal. When the server picked up two almost untouched plates he asked if we had enjoyed our food and when we said "no," he simply shrugged. No attempt was made to explain or at least hear what we had to say. This morning we ate at Lakewoods and enjoyed the staff and a well prepared meal. Good-ness! Garmisch you make me happy. After trying another bar and restaurant on the Lake, a dinner here made it all better. A beautiful looking building inside and out, Garmisch has all the amenities one could ask for. One of the best features would be the view. Good gracious what a view. We arrived at their dock and walked up to their porch to grab a drink. Our waitress Cathy was a pleasure and even let us move a table to get closer to the water and sunset. Very helpful and truly a blast, I hope all of their people are like her. The food was great, drinks were cold, and atmosphere second to none. I doubt I'll go much anywhere else on lake namakagon. Just returned to TX from snowmobiling with friends that visit this area quite a bit. In fact, 2 of them are getting married at the Garmisch this summer! Wonderfully quaint German inspired resort. We stayed inthe main hotel in a room overlooking the lake. Grand views from everywhere we were though. Meticulously clean especially given the age and considerable amount of wood paneling. The staff was friendly and more than accommodating. All the food we had was tasty especially the breakfasts. Bar food was excellent including cheese curds, chicken wings and burgers. We LOVED their bar and the bartender elevated the experience with his cute personality. Drinks are generous and inexpensive. You MUST try the bloody mary although you may want to order one less appetizer after you finish all the garnishes!. Overall, it seems hard not to enjoy your vacation at the Garmisch The almost complete lack of cell service (AT&T. Verizon worked some) probably aided in that a bit too though. read more

Northern WI is an interesting place. Full of hidden gems for the finding if you are not familiar with the area. On a fall Friday night we (boyfriend and I) decided to venture north to Cable, WI to check out Garmisch USA Resort for dinner. Note, this is only a dinner review of Garmisch Inn Restaurant and Lodge, not a review about a stay at the resort. I had been to Cable before to eat at the Brick House Cafe and to spectate at the Chequamegon Fat Tire festival at the old Telemark Resort but I've never been much farther down County Hwy M than that. Let me tell that I am not from the area and am continually surprised by the large resorts that are tucked away on lakes and in the forest. Garmisch USA is no different. Sadly we came at night and we couldn't take in the beauty of the lake and the charm of all the buildings in the daylight. But we could see some of the cute cabins tucked away and the lodge is cute and inviting even at night. We entered the lodge which is like stepping back in time. The decor has that typical "up north" lodge look with the wooden beams and the taxidermy on the walls. It looked like a nice place to kick back and relax from a long day outdoors. The lodge leads to the restaurant and Bierstube Lounge. The dining area is similar to the lounge; wood everywhere but with big windows overlooking the lake. We were greeted by the hostess/waitress and were seated shortly thereafter. Again this was later at night during fall so it wasn't terribly busy and we were easily ushered to a table. I could see this place being very busy during the summer season with guests all waiting to enjoy a Friday night fish fry. One of the reasons we choose Garmisch was for the German food. I didn't get to celebrate Oktoberfest this year and really wanted to have a small taste of the season so this was a major plus for this place. Our waitress greeted us and we ordered drinks right away. My boyfriend ordered a brandy old fashioned sweet with Brussel sprouts (major plus if you're looking for sprouts) and I decided on a glass of red wine, I believe it was just a house Merlot. He liked his beverage, he was particularly excited about the sprouts. My wine was fine, nothing special. Our waitress returned to take our dinner orders. It should be noted they have a special Friday night dining menu which is more limited than their regular dinner menu. I was initially worried that they wouldn't have the German items but much to my delight they did. We both ordered German items, Kassler Ripchen (smoked pork chops and sauerkraut) and Rahm Schnitzel (pork medallions with mushroom sauce). The entrees included cole slaw and choice of potato. You could add a side salad for a fee. BUT I was shocked as they have no soup on Friday... weird. We both got cole slaw and the potato skins with the added cheese sauce. They were out of the broccoli rice au gratin which was sad but understandable because of the time. Cole slaw was ok, it was cream based but almost a little too creamy. A few bites were good but couldn't finish the whole thing. There were also dinner rolls, which according to my boyfriend were the most amazing dinner rolls ever. They were good, but the most amazing ever... I don't know about that, but what I do know is when our dinner came out it looked amazing!! The Kassler Ripchen was cooked perfectly and the pork had that nice smoked flavor. The sauerkraut appeared to be homemade and it was just great. I don't like a lot of sauerkraut because it's just not good, but this met and exceeds my expectations. The Rahm Schnitzel was also delicious! The pork was cooked well; the breading was light and didn't weight the meat down. I was actually nervous that I wouldn't care for the sauce on the dish but it was so good, just the right amount, texture and flavors, YUM. The potato skins with the cheese were also great. Very crispy and the cheese sauce was a nice addition, definitely not that nacho cheese junk. My boyfriend and I traded meals, so we both got to enjoy both and it was marvelous. After consuming all the food, we decided to cram more food in our faces and order dessert. I love ice cream drinks and Garmisch does make them even though they are not on the menu. My boyfriend ordered a banshee, but I decided to forgo the drink and get a dessert from the menu. I got the Bavarian Crème Supreme. My dessert was good but so filling and my boyfriend enjoyed his banshee. It was a nice ending to a wonderful meal. In summary, dinner at Garmisch was delicious, way beyond my expectations. Can't wait to go back and see the resort during the daytime and eat more delicious food! We love relaxing lakeside, to checking out the Great Room at the lodge, the kids playground, brunch, and Bloody Marys at the bar. It's always a favorite hotspot on our trip up north! This is our fourth year retuning back to Garmisch for a Christmas dinner and loved it! Our server, Johnnie, was so great & the food was wonderful. This also has been the first year to stay here and it was fun. We stayed in room #10 downstairs. The room itself was newer and very beautiful, altho the bed could have been more comfortable. The only downfall is that there was a lot of creaking & noise from the upstairs as its right below the gift shop. Next time, we will plan to stay in a cabin. read more

Four things to LOVE about Garmisch: 1). The View: Nestled on a bluff with an absolutely breathtaking view of Lake Namekagon (spelling var), all four seasons are showcased beautifully. The porch was made for photos of you and your lover and you have quickly forgotten the stress back in the real world. 2). The Great Room: Northwoods charm personified. Hand worked logs and planks covered by art and artifacts representing life on the lake and in the forests. A grand fireplace with plush leather furniture and toasty throws make you want to sit, relax over a game of cribbage on their oversized board, or perhaps cuddle a bit. 3). The Bar: You are drawn to the sound of laughing and talk and enter an averaged sized bar filled with folks having a good time and drinking Bloody Mary's that have more garnishes than the buffet table at a Vegas casino. Then you notice the years of charm and character that adorn the ceiling and walls. You feel compelled to order the Bloody Mary and an appetizer of cheese curds and join in the conversation. 4). The Restaurant: Planning ahead, you make reservation at a table with a lakeside view. Every season is beautiful but late September the trees are on fire with autumn. The menu is full of German dishes that belie the history of this famous resort but there is also fresh fish or juicy prime rib to make the decision difficult. You talk the wife into ordering the schnitzel and you get the sauerbraten and decide to share. You wash it down with Esser beer on tap. You leave much too full. read more

We arrived early to avoid crowds due to Covid virus. The whole restaurant empty at this point. Within 15 minutes a table of 6 was seated directly next to us within 2 feet of us !! FYI none of the staff were wearing masks as well! When a table for two were seated on the other side of us I asked the server why they weren't following cdc guidelines for everyone's safety and placing people at least every other table? The women the server just seated took offense and told me how rude I was!!!! I said this wasn't about her and not to take it personally. She asked to be seated elsewhere and complained to the manager. I don't know what rock she has been living under!!! Anyway my evening was ruined and after dinner I asked to talk to the manager. He said it was "my choice "to be there and they weren't mandated to follow the guidelines pertaining to distant seating. I didn't think to say or ask why they weren't wearing mandated masks! No apologies were given for my experience. The manager, the owners grandson was very unprofessional and made us to feel our bad experience was our fault!!!! Yes eat there at your own risk!!!! Garmish does not care about their customers health and safety. As he pointed out "sometimes we have 100 people eating here so can't have that distancing"!!!! Meanwhile restaurant is empty and we are all stuffed in one corner of the room! Also FYI the manager mentioned that we-ruined the irate lady's evening as well!!!! When we come up north in the fall, we always stay at Garmisch. We love it! The restaurant is wonderful, the bar is great, the view is outstanding and it's not as crowded and touristy as a lot of other areas in WI. We had a great cottage this year - The Bug. Over this 3-day weekend, we visited the bar twice for Bloody Mary's, and, on the second visit, a great lunch of burgers and onion rings. Large, half-pound burgers were beefy and cooked to perfection, and the onion rings were crispy and plentiful. read more

Garmisch is a tradition for my family. We never stay on the resort, but we go to the restaurant at least once a year. The cabins in the resort are designed to look like German cottages and castles and the surrounding area is adorned with Deutsche style gnomes and trolls. Garmisch' restaurant's interior is wonderfully decorated, especially the lodge-like room to the left of the dining room entrance. Garmisch' food is excellent. From the thick and juicy cooked to order Garmisch special, their burger (one of the best in the area) to the Schnitzels and German fare, to the steaks and seafood, as well as their unique and delicious homemade soups, Garmisch is as good as it gets. If you like dessert, you're also in luck: you can get some of the best homemade bread pudding around or a slice of delicious NY style cheesecake, among other options. Charming resort! Clean cabin (stayed in the Alpine Haus) comfy beds, and furniture. Well stocked with kitchen necessities. Pros: family friendly atmosphere, plenty of nature for kids to explore. Clean, charming, friendly staff. Best prime rib ever on Sat night. Huge delicious blueberry pancakes, Fri, Sat & Sun (as well as other breakfast items). Mon - Thurs continental breakfast foods, coffee, OJ & Milk. Cons: poor cellular service (I guess there are few cell towers in national forests, ;) ) no wi-fi in cabin (did we not come here to slowww down & relax anyway?) and I regret to say, Bavarian dinner items, chicken schnitzel are sadly not authentic, at all. Send him/her to Chicago to retrain!! :) all in all, fun, comfortable and recommended! We are going back next year! read more

If your are ever in the cable area go to Garmisch for sure. Best food in the area. Both in the dining room and the bierstube ( bar ). The german food is awesome. Try the cabbage rolls, you can't go wrong. The hunce burger, huge hand packed burger with sauerkraut and special sauce aka thousand island. The beef is awesome. Great view and super friendly staff. Whether it's summer or winter it's always festive at Garmisch. Oh yeah Friday all you can eat fish fry is great as well. read more

Great view of the lake from the dinning room. The bar seems to have a difficult time keeping up with the dinning room - drinks came to us incorrect. This extended our time and broke up the continuity of our meal. Waited over 15 minutes for a grasshopper, while everyone else finished their dessert. Pricey for what we experienced. read more

Let me start by saying I had been to this location one other time, about two years ago, with some friends who introduced us to Garmisch. That Saturday evening two years ago was wonderful. We had a drink in the bar before being seating in the main restaurant and I had nothing but great memories of both the bar and the restaurant. Now, fast forward to tonight. I was taking my wife to dinner for our anniversary. I thought this would be a great place with great food and an amazing view. We got to the restaurant early (on a Monday night). We checked in to see if we could be seated. If not, we could go to the bar for a drink. The hostess said it would be better to have a drink in the bar and come back at our reservation time, even though the restaurant did not appear to be busy. The bar was great. They have amazing bloody marys. The bar staff was friendly and prompt. The food served in the bar looked good and appeared to be served in a reasonable amount of time. In hind sight, we should have eaten in the bar. We returned to the restaurant to be seated by the hostess, who had (we learned later) set the table with fresh ice water. Thank God for that. It was the only thing we had for the next 25-30 minutes, while we waited to be greeted by our waiter. When our waiter did arrive, we got no introduction, no friendly greeting, just an angry, impatient attitude. We already knew what we wanted because thankfully the bartender had allowed us to peruse the menu. Once we ordered, the salads arrived about 15 minutes later. We sat with the salad plates on the table, until the hostess walked by and took those for us. Our main course arrived about 35-40 minutes after we had ordered it. Let me add that the dining room was only about half full. The food was good and my steak was cooked wonderfully, but the food was very small portions, compared to comparably priced steakhouses. Now, let me talk about the wait staff. There were two young people waiting on tables and one hostess. Our waiter was a young man with long hair, which he continually ran his hands through to keep it out of his face. The thought of that hand carrying my food makes my stomach turn. The wait staff frequently disappeared from the dining room for long periods of time, leaving the dining room empty of staff for extended periods of time. Our waiter returned to the dining room at one point and was visibly sweating, with sweat beads on his face and forehead. He wasn't carrying food or plates. We watched him approach another table and wipe his face and then run his sweaty hands through his now sweaty hair. The other waitress was a young woman, who appeared to have slightly more personality than our waiter, but would have been more suited for an Applebee's restaurant. She was too immature to be working at a high-priced restaurant. She was wearing leggings and a tank top, as if she had come to work after being at the gym. The hostess was the only saving grace in this restaurant. She not only seated everyone that arrived. She also cleared and cleaned all the tables and reset the tables with glasses, silverware and ice water. Let me add that the hostess had an injured foot/leg and was performing her duties while wearing an orthopedic boot. Once our main course was finished, our waiter cleared our plates and then disappeared again. When he returned, he brought the check, set it on the table, said "thank you", then turned and walked away. There was no offer of dessert. What restaurant does not at least "offer" dessert. Our waiter obviously did not want to work tonight. Truly, the issues lie with the management of this restaurant. They have placed two inexperienced waiters in a high-priced restaurant. Even if they had experienced waiters, the restaurant was clearly understaffed. If not for the hostess, the dining room would be at a stand still. There is no visible management oversight during the time the restaurant is open. That is obviously a problem, as the wait staff disappears for lengthy periods of time. I don't know if this is just a problem during the week or if in the two years since I've been to this restaurant, it has declined greatly. Whatever the reason, I will not be returning for my future anniversary dinners. I will have to make this night up to my wife and celebrate our anniversary in some other way. read more

Very poor service and poor food quality. We would of looked past the inexperienced waiter if the food was fabulous. It was not! The St Moritz Schnitzel was overcooked sliced veal roast with very little flavor. The Jumbo Scallops were the size of a dime and overcooked and rubbery. I informed the waiter about the scallops. He apologized about 5 times but did not offer another entree or adjust the bill. It is a beautiful restaurant with a million dollar view.I would suggest hiring experienced cooks and wait staff or a limited menu. Unfortunately we will not return. read more

Lovely location, but vastly overpriced. Garmisch Food I've been coming to Garmisch on Lake Namekagen as long as I can remember and I'm 62 years old. I grew up in Ashland, and there were lots of resort-restaurants in the area, but Garmisch was a special place. Though I don't live in the area anymore, I still spend a lot of time in Northern Wisconsin and my wife and I come to the resort regularly in the winter for a week's stay. If you are looking for a historic and picturesque place to stay in the north woods, I would certainly recommend Garmisch. What's more, the staff in the main lodge are friendly, helpful, and accommodating and go out of their way to serve their guests. As for the restaurants at Garmisch, well, that's another matter. If you want to have a drink, the bar is fun and has a great interior vibe and woodsy decor, but the food is lousy and way overpriced. Honestly, if you go to a pub or bar with food in Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, on Minneapolis, the food is often cheaper there and it's certainly much better in quality. For that matter, the Angler's Inn of nearby Hayward is much better than this place. Honestly, you'd be better served to pick up something at McDonalds in Hayward and bring it back with you and you'll be much happier. I've tried several items on the menu and the only items that are decent in price and quality are the burgers and the daily specials. What's more, there's not a salad on the menu, except a steak salad that's twice the cost of anywhere else from Atlanta to LA to Ashland. Does the owner know that usury is a sin? As for the main restaurant, I'd judge the interior and setting to be spectacular, with an old north woods feel and a postcard view of the lake out the windows. The wait staff is also quite nice and efficient here. Mostly I'd recommend coming here just for the experience, but don't expect any great food or reasonable prices. By all measures, including taste and price, I'd order the fish fry or stick with the special like the prime rib. Unfortunately, my wife ordered the walleye on our last visit and it was minuscule in size. When I was a kid, I caught perch just off the shore from this place that were bigger and tasted better than the one tiny slice of walleye filet she was served at $20 a plate. Regarding the specialty German items, since the restaurant has a German (and Jewish) heritage, you can safely say that the German dishes on the menu bear only a faint resemblance to meals in Germany with the same name, and I've had thousands of meals in old Deutschland. Honestly, the owner needs to take a cooking course on German food. Indeed, in general he'd benefit from some hospitality-restaurant training, a review of prices at similar food venues across the region and the Midwest, and some taste testing around the Midwest for items that also appear on his menu. He'd quickly learn that the McNuggets at McDonalds are considerably fresher and more tasty than his chicken nugget "basket" in the bar and you'd get more than six freezer burned nuggets for your $8 price tag. read more

My family has been coming to Garmisch for dinner over the past 20 years and food quality has very recently declined. Somewhere between Summer 2016 and Christmas 2016, the menu and food quality has changed. Several items on the menu have been taken off and certain dishes, such as the Rahm Schnitzel, which have been prepared the same for the last ten years have changed, and not for the better. The three stars are mainly for the view and ambience. Please bring back the old menu and recipes. read more

Worst restaurant I've ever been to. Bad service, bad food, wrong orders. It took them 20 min to realize that my family and I were there and they never brought us menus, we had to get them ourselves. It's German themed and there was nothing German on the menu besides bratwursts. They promise that the food is fresh and never frozen and that is not true. When the waitress finally noticed us, I asked for the chicken wings that were on the special and I got chicken drummies instead, also the waitress said that they were served with BBQ and honey mustard and I only got honey mustard, we then asked her for BBQ and she never brought it out, we had to ask another waitress for it. We asked for waters as well and one of the waters tasted like a Bloody Mary. We nearly walked out a few times but mistakingly did not. All the waitresses cared about was the people who bought alcoholic beverages, it was selfish and embarrassing. People that came in 20 min after us got served before us. To sum it all up, they got no tip, I will never be returning, and my family that lives in the area is very ashamed of the restaurant. Never again. read more
