The wave pool is also a lot of fun and the perfect place to cool off on a hot summer day. The staff is always friendly and genuinely seems to enjoy working there, which makes the experience even better. If you plan on visiting more than once during the summer, I highly recommend getting a season pass. It's a great value since it can be used at both Sandcastle and Kennywood. Overall, Sandcastle is a fantastic place to spend a summer day with family and friends, and I highly recommend it!

Having a waterpark in Pittsburgh is a privilege and great to have on hot summer days, but it seems…read moreas though the owners of the park take advantage of the fact that they are the only water park in the area. A day pass is $60. I know that's not the norm and most people buy a season pass, but there's nothing worth $60 there. The slides are fun, but we went on the 4th of July and the two yellow slides and the speed slide were closed. Also, the cocktail bar on the boardwalk was closed as well with some other food options not running either. There's not an abundance of rides, so when multiple are closed, you are disappointing your customers. Aesthetically, the park needs updated. Walking around and seeing areas with overgrown weeds and weeds coming up from under the boards just says "we don't care". The landscaping used to be pristine and now it's either just mulch or overgrown weeds. At the lazy river, the containers for shoes had some very gross mold or something all along the bottom, so we didn't put our shoes there. On some of the building walls by the lazy river, there was mold or something growing on them. Simple power washing can fix these things. People want to walk through and feel like you care about their experience. The "bar" had frozen drink machines that just didn't freeze all day and the worker even said "if you want something of a frozen consistency, you are not going to get it" and then continued selling watery non-frozen drinks from the machine and pouring some alcohol in. For $16 a drink, I passed. Sandcastle could be amazing, but the owners need to add new attractions, make sure rides and food stands are open for people and keep the area clean. It felt dirty in many places when we walked around. Lastly, whoever is in control of the music piping through the park needs a different job. The music was awful on repeat all day.

Idlewild's Rollo Coaster may seem an anachronism in today's kinetic, adrenelane-charged, high tech world of gigacoasters and monster "woodies" like Cedar Point's Mean Streak and Great America's American Eagle, each park every year vying for the biggest, fastest, and baddest. Believe me, I'm the Roller Coaster Queen and I love coasters like that! No, the Rollo Coaster takes us back to a different time when the object was simply to have fun. This coaster may indeed seem tame by today's standards. But it's an ACE Classic. ACE is the American Coaster Enthusiasts, of which I'm a member www.aceonline.org But keep this in mind. Although the drops may not be that high, this ain't no kiddie coaster. The ride is surprisingly rough! It's a classic old woodie with all the shakes, rattles, rolls, dips, turns, etc. You're still vibrating a little when you exit the ride! The Rollo Coaster is a terrain coaster, meaning that it takes advantage of the ravine it's built in. Kennywood's three woodies are also examples of terrain coasters. It was built in 1938 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, which still makes roller coaster cars. As I understand it, when it was built the designers from PTC came out to the park and fit the coaster to the terrain. One of the other neat things about it is that it's built in a wooded area. Legend has it that some of the trees in the park were used to build the ride. So no, the Rollo Coaster can't compete with the likes of the Maverick, the Phantom's Revenge, The American Eagle, or the Magnum XL. It doesn't need too. It only wants you to get on board and have fun and laugh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIa8l8C0GzM

If you're planning to visit more than once during the season, I highly recommend getting the Platinum Season Pass. Not only is it a great value for Kennywood, but it also includes admission to Sandcastle Waterpark, making it an even better deal for families and anyone who loves amusement and water parks. No trip to Kennywood is complete without stopping at Potato Patch for their famous fries--they're absolutely delicious! I also like grabbing the pulled pork tacos from Rogue BBQ, and of course, I always save room for dessert. My favorite treat is a vanilla ice cream cone from the Golden Nugget, dipped in chocolate and topped with peanuts and a cherry. So good! What I love most about Kennywood is its classic charm. I've visited newer amusement parks, but in my opinion, none of them have rides quite as memorable or enjoyable as the ones at Kennywood. The employees are always friendly, welcoming, and seem to genuinely enjoy working there, which makes the experience even better. I highly recommend Kennywood to anyone visiting the Pittsburgh area or looking for a fun day with family and friends. It's a true Pittsburgh treasure and a place I look forward to visiting again and again!
