This is the Famous Garrett's Popcorn that started in Chicago over 50 years ago. This location is on Cottage Grove ave(@87th street) on the city's south side. I prefer this location due to not having to find/pay for parking downtown. The only drawback is that the parking lot is small and you may have to street park in order to place your order. Other than that the popcorn is freshly made and taste AWESOME as all of the other locations. The line varies, but moves quickly because most patrons know exactly what they want to order. Flavors range from: Classic Butter, Cheese ,Caramel, Almond Caramel, Pecan Caramel, Macadamia Caramel, Cashew Crisp and mixtures of two flavors. Garrett's is VERY addictive!! Be prepared to spend minimal 4.50 for a small bag to over $10.00 for a large bag. Garrett's has online ordering (Tin canister size) as well, from 1 gallon all the way to 6.5 gallon size! I would like to start by saying the customer service at this location was phenomenal. They were extremely nice and friendly. They put together my order quickly within timely manner. So therefore that's why I gave them one star. Sadly to say this business is not known for customer service but Its All ABOUT THE POPCORN! So I purchase $164.41 of the mix popcorn. All different sizes and containers. I purchased them as gifts to bring back to Atlanta for family and friends. Yet all the cheddar popcorn that I gave out to everyone that was part of the mix batch is stale. I'm so disappointed. You know this popcorn has to be good if you go pick up some prior to visiting your momma when you come to town. If my schedule doesn't support it, I remind my fam of how much they love me and insist that they send me Garrett's popcorn. This popcorn is pretty popular and you can expect a line out the door some days. It's very much worth the wait. The parking lot is about average and getting out the lot can be a challenge due to inconsiderate drivers who won't let you merge as you exit the lot. They offer a military discount and can ship almost anywhere. I've got friends in San Diego ordering online after I introduced them to this goodness. You have a few choices; cheese, caramel, mixed and even options such as pecan and cashew caramel popcorn. They have traditional plain popped but if you gonna wait in line you better get what you want. My suggestion is to make a sampler out of the smaller sizes if you want to try more than one item. If you've been here before, you know the drill; when it's your turn you better sound off and don't be holding up the line. I'm a suburbanite, and I wish that we had Garrets in the south suburbs! But until then, Garret's popcorn on 87th street is perfectly fine. I don't have to drive downtown and pay 15 dollars to park in order to by a bag of popcorn. I've made purchases at probably every Garrets in the city, and the quality of 87th streets location tastes exactly like the rest. I always purchase jumbo size mixed bags with caramel and cheddar. I just read a review about the 87th street location being in a questionable neighborhood...Come on now. It's right off the expressway and the homes are well kept in that part of town....Yes you will see lots of Black people, so I hope that doesn't make the shop "questionable". Anyhow, I've never had a problem with this location, the customers, or the workers. Yes, the parking can be tricky after 3 o'clock when everyone is off of work. Garretts popcorn is a Chicago Staple. If you've never had gourmet popcorn you need to try Garrett's. The popcorn is perfection and it also pretty affordable for the quality you get. I've tried other popcorn shops and Garretts is the true winner for me. Even though their locations are spread out throughout the city, sometimes the drive is worth it for the sweet and savory mix of Caramel and Cheese popcorn. I like to get the "Chicago Mix" aka as the Garrett's Mix. I usually ask for more Caramel than cheese. The customer service is usally great, I've honestly never had a bad experience at Garrett's the only con I can think of is the long lines but that's what happens when you have something people can't get enough of. I wish they would open more locations in the suburban areas but other than that Garrett's is one of Chicago's best and if you visit the city, you MUST try it out! You can thank me later. read more

Sooooooooo, I've been eating Garrett's practically my entire life. As a child, whenever we would drive into the city (which was often....at minimum weekly) my parents would take us downtown for Garrett's. GARRETT's the best caramel cheese mix EVER!!! Well, I've since moved out of state and decided to try this new 87th St location while in town (it was convenient). Now, Antonio (the young man who rang me up was very polite and professional); however, sister-girl #1 and sister-girl #2 were yapping it up with each other as they were preparing orders. Neither one of them gave me eye-contact our said "Hello". Then I get home only to eat mediocre tasting Chicago mix. What happened to the world famous Garrett's that I craved so badly that I would order a tin online? Does anyone know? Come on Garrett's, we are better than this! Went to this location after waiting in line to pick up an online order for 30-40 min. Was visiting from Colorado. Upon coming to the window trying to follow the online procedures it was apparent the store was clueless or at least the young lady at the window. She was very rude and unpleasant. After getting the popcorn home it was so unfortunate that the popcorn had so many huge clumps of the caramel clumped together unable to mix with the cheddar. I was so disappointed! read more

I grew up in Chicago and it was always a treat when my family went downtown for the soul purpose indulging in a large bag! I was delighted to find out that after 45 years of being solely on the northside of Chi, the family owned biz opened a popcorn shop on the south side! South siders are a big part of the success of his Chicago treasure. NOW....why do we love it??? CHEESE and CARAMEL MIX please! It's called a Chicago Mix. You actually eat the cheese and caramel together, it's all mixed together in a small, medium or large bag. Sounds weird I know (and it's weird ONLY to those that didn't grow up eating this delectable magic mix), but it really is the most delicious play on flavors in your mouth. It melts in ur mouth from the first bite, I promise. One warning: ADDICTIVE!!!! Make sure you have lots of napkins and a bottle of water is always handy. Being a native of Chicago I've literally grown up on Garrett's popcorn (cheese and caramel mix aka The Chicago Mix for life). Now that I now longer live there I don't get my fix nearly as often as I would like. You can order online which I do sometimes but there's nothing like walking into a Garrett's and having the ambrosial smell of popcorn smack me in the face. When I do go to Chicago to visit with friends and family I don't always have a chance to get downtown (usually go to the Randolph St. location) to get my cheese and caramel delight since all my peeps are in the burbs. As if my prayers had been answered, the 87th Street location opened which is much easier for me to get to. Before actually visiting I heard rumors that the service and taste of the popcorn was not up to par with downtown shops. WRONG! The service was great and the popcorn was even better. Who hasn't heard of Garrett's popcorn? I 've seen them as far away as Dubai and Japan. Do I even need to review this? Not only is Garrett's a staple in Chicago but it's internationally recognized! This location is not as fresh as the downtown location but it was good nonetheless. A friend of mine painted the mural on the outside of the building which was a good surprise. They give out samples and you can try before you buy. This building is beautiful and the line moved really quickly. You can eat a "Chicago mix" in lots of cities but I am pretty sure it is not remotely close to Garrett's mix. All popcorn fails in comparison and this is no exaggeration. I don't know how they do it but they keep cranking it out. There has got to be crack juice in there or something because it is addictive! This place was actually on of Oprah's favorite things and I remember seeing her give away a bunch of tubs of the stuff. Try to get it fresh and warm from a downtown location (Not Navy Pier). Ok, so everyone knows about the world famous Garrett's Popcorn. BUT, did you know there is a location right on your way out of the city, heading back to Indiana?! After many failed attempts at parking downtown to grab an order for my entire family, I've learned that it's best for my mental health to avoid those locations especially on the weekends! So I looked for alternatives and stumbled upon this location. It's about a 3 minute drive from I-94 and GPS will direct you right back to the toll road to head back to Indiana. This location always has a steady crowd, but you never have to wait outside in the elements like you do downtown. Nothing is quite as humbling as standing outside in the rain for a bag of popcorn. The staff at this location has always been very friendly, they always offer samples of whatever flavor is featured, and they even gave me suggestions for a place down the street to grab food. First time in Chicago and my girlfriend INSISTED we stop at Garrets before our flight back to Philadelphia! I must admit it was tasty but I don't know if it was worth almost missing my flight! I was pleasantly surprised at how fast the line moved. I hesitated coming here because I had visions of super slow service, staff that were serving popcorn with a nasty attitude and shortage of product. However that was not the case, fast service, very pleasant staff, a security guard (hey, it's the South Siddee), and efficient process which moves patrons in and out of the store quickly. We ordered 4 separate orders; 3 with the Garrett mix: a jumbo bag, a gallon Blackhawks tin, and a quart blue tin and a large order of the mixed nut variey (almond, pecan, and one other which I forget atm). They were careful in double checking that they were accurate with our order and double checked. They were also honest with us in the discrepancy between amount bought with the quart ("You're paying for the tin because it's about half the amount popcorn-wise), which I appreciated. Garrett popcorn is usually excellent, but this location on East 87th street in the South side of Chicago is a disappointment. First my husband and I was not acknowledged, we were passed over for the next customer behind us and then the girl taking orders tried telling us we weren't next, after I corrected her, she obviously realized she was wrong when we were in front in the first place. After all of this, to top it off the popcorn taste stale and we were visiting from another state, just to take bad popcorn with us that usually has a good reputation. I love Garrett's popcorn but this particular shop on East 87th street is just plain ghetto and wrong. n 9/15/2016, I was craving the cheese and caramel mix and stopped by this shop only to be terribly disappointed. After arriving home, I tasted the popcorn and discovered that the caramel was burned and that ruined everything. At any rate, I reported it to the online customer service and they informed me of something I did not know. They stated that because the caramel is hand crafted, it can easily be burned and that is fine. Can you believe that crap?
