My Southside Buddies has always tried to get me to check out this place. So, today I was off work (Good Friday) and decide to take that drive. I guess depending on the day and time. But today I only had a 25 minute drive from the WestSide to the Southside. Once I stepped inside this Big Warehouse there were Big Freezers on each size. The freezers were stocked with food that you can purchase in bulks. I was busy looking for what I drove out here for CANDY. When I walked over to the other side of the Warehouse. I was in Candyland Heaven. You walked down aisles and on each table there was candy on each table spread out for you to make your selections. They had most of the old school candy mixed in with other different candy. There were Big boxes of Sunflower Seeds & Pumpkin Seeds (The Kind with the Indian Man on it). I had a major sugar rush to the Dome. The reason I rate this post a 3 is due to the pricing. Some prices are reasonable where some prices were like ok come on? I understand this is a Big Warehouse etc but I feel that the candy could be displayed a lilttle better. I had to bend down on the floor to get some of my items. There should also be a better sign display to help the customers to see where each item is located. Any woo, the front desk ppl that checked you out were friendly and professional. This store has become slacking in their inventory, if you're traveling from a far distance, I would suggest CALLING to see if your items are available. PLEASE don't bring your children as they are NOT ALLOWED to enter the store where the merchandise is, they will have to sit in the front of the store...REALLY UNATTENDED to, so leave them at home or in the car with someone. read more

I visited the store at 3:15 p.m. and it was crowded. I noticed there was 4 checkout lanes open with 3 cashiers. One cashier was assigned to registers 3 and 4? I hardly go to this location and I won't be going back. Even though they have a variety of candy the way the place operates is disrespectful at the least. I noticed when the cashiers received cash, they quickly took it and placed in the tray under the covered glass window? Prices in this location are not as reasonable as I thought. The store doesn't accept your debit/credit card if it doesn't have a chip but they have no problem accepting the LINK card which by the way doesn't have a chip. After you've paid for your merchandise you are given 2 receipts, 1 receipt you give to the white man standing to the left of the exit, you keep the other. Then there is a black man seated at the door with a shirt on that says "Security", I didn't notice a gun. I guess he's there to threaten you or risk his life fighting over a receipt for some candy that he doesn't own. The cashier's and cash registers are located very close the door, why the double receipts. They don't allow children, that should tell you to spend your money elsewhere. This place is great! You can get party supplies, candy, food, etc. The candy selection is large so you can get your needs for fundraising or making goodie bags. They have parking in the front which is limited and several pan handlers outside. They typically try to keep them away, but they stay around. Educators don't have to pay tax (don't forget the form). I don't go as often anymore only when I'm in town, but it's huge and you have a large selection of items to choose from. It's pretty big on the inside. Looks from the outside can be deceiving. I lost $40 in perishable product and even though the manufacturer would not cooperate in helping me to recover my loss the management of L & P Foods went above and beyond, in their small way, to help me leave feeling heard and cared for as a valued customer. I wish to correct my review because I was very harsh and upset when I wrote my last review of L & P. I hastily wrote a review on my phone that was very unfair to the business. For that I apologize and hope you forgive my quick temper. I was in a very big hurry and I did not feel the checkout was doing their best to service the customers in a timely way. I realized I was also very impatient and that was unfair to the business. Since I am writing with a calmer demeanor and level head, I feel I can make a better assessment of the business (L & P) I walked in to L & P on Thursday, April 27, 2017, I walked in to L & P a bit anxious because I knew I wrote a very unflattering review. I was greeted by several gentleman when I walked in and already I knew I felt very guilty. The selection of products is always incredible and it is one of the best stores to navigate around. Prices are clearly marked and there are very few businesses that can beat L & P's prices. When checkout came, I was quickly handled with a smile and the manager came over to me and explained that service is a high priority and if there was ever a problem or question, please feel free to come and talk. It was such a sincere meaningful exchange that it made me feel real good. L & P is really a well run business and they do care about their customers. I have shopped L & P for years and will continue to do so in the future. 5 Stars for selection, a great store that is fun to shop, prices and a concerned management team and staff that really cares about service. I am reviewing the candy aisle only. This is the most well stocked old-school candy store I​ have been able to find locally. They have just about everything at a very reasonable price. Every year we have a super bowl​ party (which include kids). We make candy bags for each one and it is the highlight of their visit. The adults, of course,​ want one too when they see all of the nostalgic​ candy. L& P sells Long Boys, Chews in various flavors, Chico sticks, a Variety Candy Bag ( I normally get two-3 of these), all types of sour candy, the list is truly endless. Let's​ not forget the lemon cookies, strawberry cookies & hot & sour pickles-they are huge. Check it out for yourself. You know those kids who are always out selling M&Ms "for their football team" downtown outside of the train stations? Well, I've finally found out where they buy their product - L&P Foods. Of course, most transplants and carpetbaggers would never consider venturing to L&P, as it's on the dreaded South Side of Madison. It's a shame most North Siders will never drive south of Madison to experience the wide thoroughfares, architecture, parks and history of the South Side. The South Side isn't entirely the Berlin of April,1945, folks. L&P is basically a wholesale food outlet that's about 10 minutes from the Loop via the Dan Ryan (sans traffic). It's directly adjacent to the expressway and 30 seconds off of the ramp. It's sort of a Costco or Sam's Club for the hood. You should go to L&P if you need the following cheap: 50 packs of Sixlets, 50-pack boxes of Vitner's chips, huge boxes of meatballs, huge boxes of chicken fingers and other kinds of bulk frozen meats and junk food. As for the kids who sell those M&Ms downtown, they likely buy their 50-pack M&M boxes at L&P for $25 and then sell them downtown "for their football team" at $1 apiece. That's a 100% profit, sports fans. Not bad. If you've got a big family to feed, a convenience store to stock or a need to stockpile your junk food, then L&P is your place. Four stars. read more

I was shocked at how expensive this place is-- it had been described to me as being like Sam's or Costco but without needing the membership. It is way more expensive than either of them, and more expensive than Walmart or Walgreens or jewel when things are on sale. This was my first visit to L&P, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I went looking for old school candy, and they did not disappoint me. The selection is awesome. Since it was so close to Halloween, I went early in the morning. The store was relatively crowded for that time of the morning, but they had several cashiers on duty, so there was no wait. Large boxes of gyros meat, large bags of French fries, large boxes of pizza puffs, large containers of ice cream, large boxes containing individual juices, large boxes containing individual candy bars, large boxes containing famous treats such as Twinkies, wow, this place has it all when it comes to wanting to stock up on food. Want to know what makes this place even better? It also sells plastic dishware such as cups, plates, and spoons. It also sells plastic wrap and aluminum foil, and everything I listed in this paragraph comes in large quantities at great prices. Some items that I bought, I use to sell to the students at the nearby Stagg School at 74th and Morgan. The prices that this store offers on its products allows many to sell the enclosed treasures at their own desired prices. To pay for the items you want, you can use only cash, and food stamp cards. They do not accept checks here (thank God), and they will not accept debit cards unless you're purchasing a minimum of $20 in merchandise. They do not accept credit cards the last time I heard. One thing to keep in mind, there are other wholesale food stores just stone's throws from L&P on State Street, but none are as great as L&P! I have yet to find a wholesale store open to the public here on the west side that is as great as L&P, but I haven't been looking. Sorry. read more

Negative -1 1 Review I want to start by saying we as a Black people have to stop shopping with businesses that do not respect us or appreciate us as a human being. We often settle for this behavior at L&P because this store carries the products that we need for our small businesses. If we were large businesses we could get connected with the retailers just as L&P does, Believe me I have tried. I have known about and visited L&P for the most of 20 years.The customers are 99% Black consumers. Why do we continuously give people are dollar that do not respect us. I have witnessed on several occasions the consumer being treated like crap. This past week the upper management yelled at me for wanting to exchange an item that I had just purchased..what the hell! My mother purchased a pack of hamburger patties (among other items) as we always do whenever we come to town. The product tasted freezer burned. Unfortunitely after tasting it we threw the product away. We called the grocery store today (because they were closed last night) to let them know the product was not good. The person she talked to was extremely rude. He told her "if you threw it away how do we know it was bad." The answer is because I just informed you sir. Why would she lie about an $8.00 item? South Side candy store that sells massive quantities of all your childhood favorites like Frooties, Long Boys, Chews, Now & Laters, etc. It's like Costco or Sam's Club but with candy and chips only. All the folks you see selling candy in the street and on the L have likely bought their supply out of this store. Best part about this store is the QUANTITY. Normally you can only get this type of candy in a few pieces from gas stations and corner stores, but this place sells gigantic tubs of your favorite $0.10 candy. If you like to binge, this is your place. Let's just say that this store isn't located in Lincoln Park. The neighborhood is a bit on the rough side, so I probably wouldn't bring some of my North Side buddies here. Parking can be tricky. I went to this establishment today and was very disappointed. I went to purchase candy for a dessert table for my daughter's birthday and to my surprise, they would NOT allow my accompanied 10 Year old in the store. I feel we should not be discriminated against because we have children. I didn't come with a school bus full of kids, I came with my 10 Year old. It was for her event so I wanted her to pick out what she wanted. I would not recommend this place. We are good enough to spend our money here, but they asked me to leave my daughter sitting on a bench by the front door while I shopped. Who does that. This store takes the expression "like a kid in a candy store" to a whole different dimension. I felt like I was in a time loop of my child and adolescent life. All of my favorite candy under one roof with ginormous pickles, steaks and party supplies galore. I can't believe I've never been her before especially since I grew up here. If you have a sweet tooth or want to reminisce about the days when candy was candy this is the place to come! My aunt suggested we go because she wanted taffy apples (not to be confused with candy apples). Since my wife hadn't ever had a taffy apple we agreed to go. This was the best decision we've made all day. Left with tons of stuff and the kid got to eat some goodies while we wheeled him around the joint. My cousin referred my daughter and I to this store. We live in the suburbs and only have Sam's Club, but they do not sell a variety of candy. We came to this store today 16/10/10 to buy 2 boxes of candy. First the security guard told my daughter she can not bring her pop in the store so we took the pop back and put it in the vehicle. No problem. Then he said my 12 year old daughter can not walk around the store she had to be in a cart .... What! I grabbed my daughters hand and proceeded to show my older daughter where the candy was. I was going to give her the money after I confirmed the price for myself and leave. Two of the workers came to me and stated my daughter can not walk around the store. Mind you, I had her by the hand so she can not get into anything. My older daughter had what she wanted in the cart. All I had to do was give her money. One of the workers told me my daughter can get into a cart he had. I asked him if he was going to pick her up and put her in, because I sure couldnt. He then lifted the back of the cart so she could crawl in like she was some type of animal. When she refused, the other worker told us he would take care of us and ushered us to the front. After we stood there waiting for a few minutes he said he could not check us out and asked us to leave because they have rules. I said that was fine it's another candy store across the street and I bet they aren't treating children like animals. This is a freaking store that sells groceries and candy. Not a liquor store! We do not come from a place where children are treated like animals, therefore I do not expect to go anywhere and let someone else treat my children as such. Bottom line I am glad these guys did treat us with disrespect because across the street the prices were much cheaper for what my older daughter wanted and the store is "Child Friendly." It may not seem that the store across the street had much but all we had to do was ask if they carried the item and the young man asked us what flavor and went to the back to get the merchandise.
