There are few thing I love as much as Garrett's Chicago Mix (yes I know it not technically called that any more...but neither is not technically the sears tower either) This year on our annual downtown Christmas shopping trip I noticed this location further south than the one we normally go to and guess what No line. We tried to stop at the one by the new Starbucks further down but the line was down the block. The prices seemed much more reasonable here (I sure it was my imagination) This year we also bought some Hot Cocoa CaramelCrisp. I've been eating Garrett's popcorn a long time and was really surprised when I saw a Garrett's in London.... I had no idea it was that famous. I always eat the Chicago mix, which is a mix of caramel and cheddar cheese popcorn. It's a perfect blend of sweet and savory..... I popped into this location on my last day in Chicago. There was only one worker (Brandi according to my receipt) in the store around 11:30AM on a Monday. She packaged my items with a lot of care. The greasy Garretts Mix was placed in a second brown paper bag and then a third plastic bag with handles. She also provided a bunch of napkins which were a life saver as I ate the Garretts Mix on the way to the bean. The taste of the cheddar popcorn was not overpowering, but was well balanced with the sweet and crunchy caramel popcorn. I stopped by Garrett's last Mon. morning after taking the Chicago Architecture Foundation's boat tour. As a popcorn addict and someone keen to try Chicago-specific foods, I knew I had to pick up a bag of the Garrett Mix (AKA Chicago mix) before leaving the city. I had a bit of trouble finding this store, since the pin on Yelp is across the street, but a local pointed me in the right direction so I could get my cheesy-caramel mix on. Upon entering, the store was fairly empty, as I'd expect for a Mon. morning., so I didn't have to wait in line, which was nice. Before purchasing, I was able to try a sample from the many sample cups on the counter, and I was favorably impressed. I ordered a small bag ($5.15), which was more than enough to sustain my snacking that day and the next. I'd had Chicago mix popcorn from another flavored popcorn vendor in Pittsburgh and had enjoyed it, but Garrett's takes it to the next level. Something about the combination of the sweetness of the caramel corn and the non-overwhelming saltiness of the cheese corn just works, and keeps you coming back for more. I can definitely see why Garrett's made Oprah's original list of favorite things, propelling it to national fame and distinguishing it as a unique Chicago food. As others have mentioned, I'd recommend eating this popcorn within 24 hrs.--sooner is better, since even less than 24 hrs. later, the cheese corn starts to go stale. If you can't make it downtown, keep in mind that there's a stand in O'Hare, so you can pick some up between flights. A small bag goes a long way in terms of sharing with friends. We got the Garrett Mix and requested for half cheesecorn and half caramel crisp popcorn. It was only later did we realize that a better ratio would be 80% cheesecorn and 20% caramel popcorn because the caramel popcorn is super sweet and you can only really eat it with the cheesecorn together. Definitely go for more cheese! The caramel crisp can also sometimes clump up together so you come up with a huge chunk that you have to break apart. This shop is a block or two from Cloud Gate and also in the hub of all the downtown shopping. If you're stuck on what to get for a souvenir, consider getting a bag of Garrett Popcorn as they bag it in a waxy popcorn bag then in a brown paper bag and then again in a nice sturdy plastic bag with their signature logo complete with plastic handles to carry around and protect itself from rain or snow. read more

The first time I've ever tried Garrett's was during a layover in Chicago's ORD airport a few years ago. The employee recommended the Garret Mix, or what people call the "Chicago Mix". It is basically a mix of cheddar and caramel popcorn, conveniently my two favorite popcorn flavors. I have been hooked since. Ever since I moved to Chicago, I have been frequently coming here to get my popcorn fix. This place is definitely a Chicago staple and I can see why. I never thought I'd be this hyped up about popcorn, I mean after all, you can just go to the store and buy popcorn anytime you want, right? Nah, this doesn't do it for Garrett's; once their popcorn touches your lips, you've raised all the popcorn standards you've ever had. This location specifically targets tourists. It is located on Magnificent Mile, and usually, there are long lines to get in. That might be the case at any Garrett's, but this location gets extra busy. They have tons of different flavors that you can try, and when it's not nearly as busy, the employees will always offer you samples to try. They don't only carry one kind of caramel popcorn, there's also almond, cashew and even macadamia caramel flavors. I've tried basically all of them, and they are all really good flavors. If I had to pick a least favorite, it would be butter. Don't get me wrong though, the butter flavor is not your typical "movie theater" taste, it's actually a lot better, and tastes really good, but I prefer the cheese and caramel over butter anytime. The sizes vary, and yes, it is a little on the expensive side for what it is, but Garret's is a name, and you basically pay for that too. The prices also vary by flavor. The butter and plain are cheaper than the rest. Prices range from 3.50$ all the way to 99$ depending on size, but I find more value in the large sized popcorn being at 11$ and it really is a large bag. This place is a must try! read more

My family happened to be in Chicago the week of National Popcorn Day. I had no idea there was such a thing, but it worked to our advantage because Garrett was celebrating by offering a small bag of their signature blends for only $1 between the hours of 11 -1 for the whole week. The first day we went (we went three days in a row), I found it odd that people would stand in a long line for popcorn. After trying the popcorn I realized that there isn't a whole I wouldn't do for a $1 bag of Garrett's popcorn. It is the best cheddar popcorn I've ever tasted. We liked this location.
