Chicago is famous for its pizza and popcorn among other things. Therefore, we had to stop by the famous Garrett popcorn store that everyone is raving about. It lives up to its standard in my book. The creamy saltiness of the cheese coated the freshly popped corn kernels. The sweetness of caramelized sugar in addition to the crunchiness of the nuts...uhm...uhm...good. Grabbed some popcorn as we were heading out of town and was really disappointed with how quickly the spicy cheese flavor went stale. We purchased it late Tuesday, and by Thursday it was not worth eating. I highly recommend ordering just what you plan to eat of this type and to eat it immediately. On the other hand, the caramel almond was good, and still is good, as of today (Saturday). I think this popcorn is slightly overpriced, ($24-ish for two large bags), but the name is a staple in the city and it draws customers from all around the world, so they are able to get top dollar for their products. read more

If you don't have a chance to stop by while in town, i also noticed they had a shop in Chicago O'Hare. Ok here is the scoop, I don't even like popcorn really and this place is simply the best! The smell will greet you even before you reach the front door and you will simply have to try it. No one does popcorn like Garrett. Locals go here all the time and so do the tourist, it is simply part of the Chicago experience. Every time I go, I always feel like I never get quite enough, no matter how big of a size I order. Garrett is a Chicago staple and deserving of more stars than I can give. In a word this place is sublime. Simply orgasmic popcorn that will forever change the way you look at popcorn again. Having been born and raised in Chicago, and still living in the city, I've eaten more than my fair share of the Chicago Mix, which is cheese and caramel. One morning I popped in as soon as they opened and purchased a small mix. Ate it later that night. It was not fresh. Nice and stale. I suspect that someone did not toss popcorn from the night before and decided to sell it. This place generates too much business to be that cheap. I haven't been back. Also, improve your packaging to keep the popcorn fresh. Disappointing. read more

I've always felt that Garrett's is sooo over-rated. Half the time the service is served with a side of attitude and your cheese popcorn is stale. What irks me most about most locations is the lackadaisical attitude the employees have. Perhaps it due to knowing people are standing in line for their product, many times over 30 minutes long. However, no F's are given. I witnessed 3 employees just standing and chatting with each other not working at all while tons of customers are waiting. Get better employees. If you have to go to a Garretts, go to the one on Randolph, at least you wont have to wait as long. read more

Can't believe that popcorn can be this good! I've eaten popcorn all my life and never had anything this awesome. We tried the regular buttery popcorn and also tried the green colored kettle corn that was the special for st Patrick's day. The buttery one was soooooo good! Never tried this location before but as I passed by I had a sudden craving for Chicago mix popcorn or as it is know here, Garrett's mix. I purchased a small bag from the store in the late afternoon. The popcorn had large well popped kernels . Although it was kept in bins with heat lamps the popcorn was cold. The mix I received was about 75 percent caramel corn with 25 percent cheese popcorn. They was probably a blessing as the cheese popcorn turned out to be extremely salty. For $5.62 for a small bag, this was expensive and disappointing. read more

Popcorn is my favorite snack in the world, and Garrett's is logically my favorite place to get said snack. There are a number of choices of popcorn - from sweet, to salty, to spicy - and they are all fresh, super crunchy, and packed with flavor. When I went to Chicago, I got two bags and had zero regrets! Though I really enjoyed the sample of the spicy cheese (a winter special, I believe), i stuck to my guns and got a carmel/cheese mix for home, and a plain cheese for the road. The employees are friendly and quick to serve you, which I really appreciate, since they deal with tourists all day and must resist drooling into the popcorn during their shift. Everyone seemed generally happy to work there or be a customer there, and I didn't feel like just another customer. The manager was super patient as I tried nearly every sample, fiddled for my money, and requested a larger bag to carry my purchases and personal belongings. Love you, Garrett! The line was short, the service quick and friendly, and the popcorn yummy! We got a large Garrett Mix (cheese and caramel popcorn mixed). The popcorn was delicious, salty and sweet, but we could only eat like a 1/3 of it between the 2 of us until we felt like we had enough. It was kind of like really rich cake; really good but could only stomach a small amount. I especially liked how the caramel tasted a little like burnt caramel, more flavor than the usual caramel. A large bag was like $7.89 (only a couple bucks more than the small hence why we got it). I would get a small next time though. read more

I was told by a friend that I needed to try Garrett's special popcorn mix when visiting Chicago. I'll say I was a little bit skeptical. I do love caramel popcorn and cheddar popcorn separately, but wasn't sure how they would taste mixed together. The verdict: wonderfully sweet and salty! Although it sounds weird, the flavors just work well together and make for an addicting snack. I was also able to try samples of the pecan caramel popcorn and the almond caramel popcorn, both of which were delicious. I tried Garrett for the sake of it because Chicago is known for their Chicago Mix (Caramel and Cheddar). I bought some as souvenirs to give out to friends and family because I didn't see anything else I was very fond of to bring back home. I definitely recommend getting it in a tin can so they don't become stale, but it's an extra $10 for the tin, which I think is absolutely ridiculous. Does tin really cost that much? Supposedly, the shelf life of the popcorn is up to 24 hours in the regular bag and up to 10 days in the tin can. I made sure to buy the popcorns right before my flight back to New York and my neighbor told me the cheddar all became stale that same night I came home. So maybe shelf life is less than 8 hours in the bag. I bought the tins for my other friends because I won't see them until a few days later after I came home. I really hope the ones in the tin cans are okay. You get more value for the bag because you get more popcorn and it's way cheaper, but I guess the tin is supposed to last longer. read more

Yum! We usually order online since we live in California- but when we are in Chicago we try to stop in a store and get the Mix, just so we have something to snack on while in town. My husband loves all the flavors but I stick to the plain caramel one- its my fav. Just a tip- the bagged popcorn doesn't keep as long as the popcorn in the tin- so keep that in mind when buying. read more
