OK, the food and service were wonderful. We shared an order of onion straws and then ordered the dynamite shrimp and bruschetta. The onion straws were crispy but not oily. There were 13 shrimp and the coating was delicious and the drizzle was excellent. The bruschetta was delicious as well. Why two stars then? The absolutely stupid surcharge. This is greedflation. Good spot! Very classy atmosphere with lots of indoor seating and even some outdoor seating in the warmer months. Has a pretty varied menu-- you can get everything from burgers to salmon to a Thai noodle bowl. The food is good. If you're not in the mood for American food, I like their Thai chicken chop chop salad and their Thai noodle bowl a lot, although once you add chicken, I think is a little overpriced for the portion. It's pretty expensive all around though. And as others have said, the food does take a while so as long as you go in expecting that you'll be fine. They do have a full bar, so you could always take advantage of that while you're waiting. Their smoky margaritas are really good. They also run happy hour specials all day Tuesday, W-F 4-6pm and weekends 12-4pm. Great servers and staff, friendly and helpful! I came to Garrett's with a group and enjoyed my experience. This restaurant was quite busy, so I'm grateful that we reserved a table in advance. We shared the Haystack Onion Rings ($8.99) and the Crispy Dynamite Shrimp ($13.99). The shrimp was my favorite. Well cooked and flavorful. I also ordered the Thai Chicken Chop Chop ($15.99) and a NZ white wine. I wish I could remember the name of the wine because I loved it! I don't enjoy sweet wines and this one was quite dry. The salad was also super tasty! It could do without so many wontons and could use a bit more sauce, but altogether, I enjoyed the flavors. Had the chips and salsa for an appetizer and their chips are the good thick dipping tortilla chip! No one likes a thin chip that breaks when you try to dip or scoop salsa! Although some of my food experiences have not been the greatest at Garrett's, my recent experience was worth it. I ordered the Blackened Chicken Alfredo. There was not one thing wrong with this dish. The flavor of the alfredo sauce was on point and the chicken perfectly cooked. They have a variety of menu options: burgers, pastas, quesadillas, salads, etc. So depending on what you're in the mood for, l you will find something that feeds your appetite. Always good in the past. I assume regular chef is out. Both the chicken and fish entrees were way over salted, while the vegetable was under cooked. There was also something wrong with the water - it was undrinkable!?! Waitess apologized and said she filled glasses from wrong faucet. Replacement was okay, but unfortunately she later refilled our glases from the bad tap. If the food was cooked in that water it could explain the off taste of the food. Ordered a turkey thin bread sandwich- said it had cranberries on it- didn't really taste it to much. A lot of Mayo which may have overpowered the sandwich. I ruben is not served on TOAST but grilled this wasn't Missing sauerkraut, and the worst pieces Of corned beef I have ever seen. Arby's makes a better ruben for 6 dollars. This was 16 and sadly went into the trash. A NA stella was $7.00. We won't be back to Garrettes for a very long time. The server shorted herself when making change by taking off the cent. The lobster bisque is delicious. The customer service is good. The staff is friendly and there's almost a zero wait time to be seated. I believe the best time to go is during lunch time. The portions are generous and you'll have a nice view of the golf range. It's a good place for kids as well. I'm a foodie so My rating is a reflection of my culinary experiences, and is not shrug towards Garrett's. In essence, for a good meal while in Rockford, go to Garrett's. We came here for a light lunch. The restaurant has a lot of searing and is kid friendly. Which is good because I had my two nieces with me. We started out with the Reuben egg rolls, these were very good. Haven't had anything like it. The server was great about refilling our water and drinks. Dinner last night was amazing. Ordered garlic cheesy artichoke dip and it was wonderful (not the best I have had but close). For dinner I couldn't decide, soo many yummy choices, but I walked past someone eating the Ultimate Mac and Cheese and it looked amazing. Waitress said if I haven't had it, than I had to try it. I did and don't regret it! Cheese sauce was amazing and breadcrumb topping perfectly crispy. One of the best Mac and cheeses I have had... Just wish it had bacon (they have a Lobster one but I don't eat seafood). Dessert was creme brûlé but I was not impressed at all. It did not have a strong vanilla flavor at all. The topping also was not caramelized properly... Just warm sugar. Will not get it again! All and all, great app and dinner not great dessert. Service was a little slower than average but they were busy on patio and a lot of the customers were regulars so longer conversations with staff ensued. I did notice the manager stopped by all the regulars tables but failed to stop at ours or the table next to us that were not regulars. This restaurant exudes an atmosphere of trying to be a bit more gourmet than your typical Rockford fare. It is tucked into the corner of a golf shop. The tables are darkly lit. During the day you can watch people hitting balls at the driving range right outside. I had the "Friday Fish Fry" at Garrett's Cafe. We Chicagoans can be a little geocentric. It's understandable of course, particularly when it comes to food, because we are the envy of many near and far. Yet, it's what we find annoying about New Yorkers. About anyone, really, who is convinced theirs is the best (be it pizza, theater, craft brew) and thus blinded to other options. So just chill. Honor your excellence (or the choices that allow you to be) and relax. Because Garrett's, while off the beaten path by about two hours, ain't too shabby. Rockford used to be the second largest town in Illinois. That title has since gone to Aurora. Crime is endemic. Unemployment is off the charts. It's one of the ten worst cities to live in in the United States. So Garrett's, as a local business, has a lot to remedy. While the facade of the place is completely unappealing (think strip mall. . . I know, hard to stomach), inside is inviting and warm. It has a feeling of semi-permanence, as though it could go from being a restaurant to Halloween USA come October, but it makes a concerted effort to be different, special, an escape. We celebrated my favorite aunt's birthday here. We ordered drinks, one of which landed on my mom's shoulder, but the Viognier (props for even serving it, Garrett's) was so tasty. And white. And hence my mom didn't throw her usual fit. She's going to be 65. She claims this allows her to be bitchy. It's an ongoing debate. I had a really hard time deciding what to get, though it's Lent, and fish fry night and while I could do shots of tartar sauce until I'm drunk with relish, I was in the mood for something special. I ordered the pecan-crusted walleye, but only after ebbing and flowing between an excellent selection of pasta, mains and entree salads (a salad with butternut squash and pine nuts? oy!). I loved my entree, though puzzled at the raspberry sauce on the plate. It was an artful presentation. The folks at Garrett's are really trying to bring some class to Winnebago Country. And with Winnebago in the name. . . well, you think KOA, humming generators and stick ball. In looking around the dining room, everyone was engaged in conversation and marveling at what the (inexperienced and sometimes dull) waiters put in front of them. We left happy, hesitant to say "Hmmm, I mean, I could have better in Chicago. But that was good for Rockford." No, it was good. Period. Not great, but good. And I think that's a wonderful thing to say with a palette as spoiled as mine. May you rumble through this recession with grace, Garrett's. Oh, and they are hiring cooks. I highly recommend the Pesto and Brie Chicken Sandwich. I just happened to be in town meeting family halfway and we decided to check out Garrett's for lunch. The staff were friendly. Most of the food was delicious (I felt the spinach dip was a bit too thick) and the view was pretty nice outside. It overlooks a golf course and as a Florida city boy, getting a clear sky with an open field isn't something I get to see all the time. I definitely recommend Garrett's for lunch. Overpriced for average food. The shrimp appetizer was very delicious, but you only 5 small pieces, and again, for the price it's not worth it. The mac and cheese was so cheesy I couldn't even distinguish noodle from cheese. Burgers and salads are decent. They have a rotating beer selection, and some of their daily deals are good... I recommend looking at those on their Facebook before making the trip in. They also have live music a lot. I would really only recommend for drinks and entertainment.
