Friendly service in a pub-style atmosphere. There are a lot of pubs in this area! The burgers and fries were great and the beers were better. This was a perfect spot for a casual lunch and post-race beers on a Sunday afternoon. It's not anything fancy, but they've got a nice selection of beers on tap and the staff are helpful. More well-lit than many other pubs I've been in. Recommended. read more

No one under 19 is permitted and they are very strict. They check everyone's ID. Also you can only use restrooms if you're a customer. Large beer selection and local brewery's on tap. Cost is about $8.25 for one glass of beer in CA. read more

We stopped for a snack by the fire. My wife wanted a beer and I wanted to try a couple of scotch whiskeys to see if I could find my favorite. We ordered the chicken strips with some honey mustard dipping sauce. The waitress picked me some whiskeys and I started fumbling through my attempt to find my favorite... that effort will take some time. The food came and my wife had a bite and stopped and said woah! These aren't normal chicken strips! These are really good! They are tender, and the flavor is awesome. The fries are good too!, she said. We came for the drinks and the atmosphere of the fireplace, and were tazed with an awesome snack. We will be back! read more

We had a good time here watching football. The great thing is that they had the 3 last games! So we can keep track of all teams at the same time. It didn't matter commercials :) What we didn't like that much was the service. This lady with glasses rolled her eyes as soon as I asked for a Club Soda with lemon and salt. I usually explain it so it is easier than it's regular name in some bars: Russian. Anyway, she forgot my crackers and had this rude attitude. Also service was very slow. Other tables were getting their stuff faster though. read more

Great beer selection, very strong pass on the service. Staff will happily mock other patrons/accents but feel confused when they don't get a tip. In particular the girl the black and white sweater seemed to have a real chip on her shoulder. read more

Garrick's was an absolutely awesome experience. The atmosphere at midday was generally quiet, relaxing, and the place looked great with all of the natural light pouring in through the massive windows. The service was great and the beer knowledge was extensive. Each of the six beers we ordered came in a glass from their perspective breweries which was a great touch. We will be definitely coming back here on our next trip to Victoria. read more

We were in Victoria and decided to try this pub, the restaurant was very good we liked everything that we ordered. Despite this, our server, Jenn, was not friendly whatsoever. I work in the customer service industry so I can appreciate good service when given, and she did not provide it. She was not enthusiastic nor friendly when taking our order and had a aggressive manor as if she did not want to be working there. The only time she was fairly pleasant was when she handed us the check to pay. If you are going to work in the restaurant service industry the point is to enhance customer service, if not work at a fast food restaurant like McDonald's. We were impressed with the food and pub, but Jenn's service was careless and the worst I've ever seen. read more

Basically the perfect spot for an afternoon pint and snack! Huge tables, plenty of space and an excellent beer selection! We even found a peach lager that my mother (a non-beer drinker) loved. On an Alaskan cruise and had a one day stopper in Victoria. Oh my gosh. Adorable city! We travel for craft beer and had heard Garricks Head Pub was the place for a huge selection of Victoria and Canadian brews. The selection was vast. I settled in on a Phillips Brewing Tiger Sharks Pale Ale while my beer partner decided on a Vancouver Island Brew - Broken Islands Hazy IPA. BOTH DELICIOUS! The bartender was super helpful in narrowing our choices down. We wish we had more time to discover more of the craft brew scene in Victoria. Cheers read more

Was on a tour in Victoria when we were getting hungry and looking for a place to eat. It was around 3ish so not really mealtime but we noticed there were quite a few tables full of people and saw a couple walk in so we figured hey, this can't be bad. Sat down and looked at the menu and OMG they have fried pickles!!! I love fried pickles but they're hard to find! So of course we got them and they were great! perfect fried-ness and plated like a structure or monument of some sort. My father went to grab one and toppled the whole thing over though. JENGA!! They have a very decent selection of beer and I got the Vancouver Island Pilsner. Also ordered the Down Under burger which was quite good although I think I was missing the pineapple.... And the fries were absolutely perfect. The server was also very friendly and came to check in on us throughout the meal. Excellent beer selection- something for every beer taste ( Ales, lager, pilsner, bitters, IPA, dark & malty, reds, etc) Broad menu- the onion rings, and fish & chips were perfectly hot & crispy! Friendly service with great advice if you can't decide from the more than 30+ choices! Fun atmosphere, great mix of locals, visitors, all ages, hipster & nerd. Lots of tv's to watch your favorite team! A bit loud with music, tv's and all the people- don't come here if you want a quiet conversation. We are saying a sad "Farewell" to the old Garrick's Head Pub. It's definitely changed a lot over the years. I remember when they had a menu full of traditional English pub fare. There were no big screen TVs. It was a cozy little tavern that sent you back in time to old, traditional England. Today there are very few of those items left on the menu. Stumbled upon here after a terrible whale watching experience and they totally made up for it. Friendly service and very helpful along with a hugeeee selection of beers! If you're hungry, don't fret, there's also a good selection of food since a restaurant is connected with this pub. Anyways only a few hours in canada, I had to get poutine! It was really good, and I paired it up with a cider. Dangerous too because you can't even taste the alcohol in the cider, the name is in my picture (escapes me atm). Overall, for the short amount of time I was in Victoria, this pub was pretty spot on and made me really enjoy this city. read more

How I heard of this place: When we arrived at our hotel (The Bedford Regency), we were surprised to see that our stay included two CAD$25 gift cards for food at Garrick's Head Pub. Our first meal would be courtesy of the gift and a short walk around the corner towards the start of Bastion Square. Type of cuisine: "Nestled in Victoria's beautiful and historic Bastion Square, Garrick's Head Pub has been a local fixture since 1867, in the days when Judge Matthew Begbie presided over the local court house. Simply put, we are one of the oldest English pubs in Canada and maintain Victoria's largest selection of craft and import beers on tap. If you're hungry, we offer traditional English pub fare in a bright and relaxing atmosphere. " Ambiance: "Customers are welcome to linger around our wood-burning fireplace to warm away the cool days and nights. As of 2012, our newly expanded front room offers ample space for dining and socializing and in the warmer months, our outdoor patio seating, overlooking the square, is a fantastic spot to enjoy the sun and to watch the crowds go by." What I ordered: On our first visit, we shared a half size of Nachos (CAD$9) of fresh tri-coloured chips topped with sliced jalapeños, sliced black olives, green onions, diced tomatoes and three melted cheeses, served with salsa and sour cream, and the Down Under Burger (CAD$16.50), a house-made 7-ounce, 100% beef, charbroiled burger topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, fried egg, beets, pineapple, crisp leaf lettuce, fresh tomato, red onion and dill pickle. We substituted the fries for poutine (CAD$4.50). On a return visit, Sunday, 1 June 2014: We returned to use our second CAD$25 voucher and selected the Caesar Salad (CAD$10.75) with Chicken Breast (CAD$5.25): fresh romaine, grated parmesan, bacon bits, croutons and a creamy Caesar dressing loaded with garlic, topped with Parmesan crisps, and the full size Fettuccine Funghi (CAD$12.75): fettuccine in a wild mushroom and garlic cream sauce. What I loved: Of the two visits, my favorite meal was shared on Sunday with my husband - the creamy, crisp Caesar salad and the hearty, garlicky, abundant fettuccine fungi. Garrick's Head is a great place to grab a beer and a lunch while wandering Victoria. Our waitress was a sweetheart. She was quick to offer beer suggestions, and places around Victoria we might enjoy during our day there. We had the Poutine and French Onion Soup to start -- both were averagely good. The French Onion Soup had a ton of herbs in it compared to others, but it was nonetheless good. The Poutine was like any other I had eaten, but it tasted good with the beer, and I'd order it again if I came back. The Fish and Chips were also average but good. It's a huge portion. Glad that I split it with someone! The fish batter was a little soggy, but not terrible. It's a nice little pub to hit if you're touring the area, but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to come here. read more

The gigantic burger which was big enough to share had cheddar cheese, bacon, fried egg, beets, pineapple, lettuce, tomato, red onion and dill pickle. They only cook the beef well done. They were having a special on certain beers that were only $6 each, so me and my boyfriend got a few of those. For food, I got their shepherd's pie, and the flavor was on point. Sooo great beer selection here, but what killed me was the service. The bartender was not nice and was slow. Maybe I got unlucky and she was having a bad night... but either way not a great experience because of that. She never greeted us when we sat down even though she saw us. When she finally came over we asked her for recommendations and she was literally useless. I've bartended for a few years and that was just sad. We didn't stay long because of it. One of the 3 best places in Greater Victoria to get hummus & pita! Beautiful presentation, and it tasted even better! Friendly greetings from staff. Quick service on 2 visits when we explained we were on a short lunch. Happy chatter gave it a great vibe. It's quite clean and bright - lots of windows bring in natural light. I was honestly shocked by how good the food was. I had initially assumed it might be a spot primarily for tourists, but a dear friend of mine who is a local mentioned that people in Victoria actually love coming here. She even noted that some friends from her children's school were there just the night before for an alumni weekend. The menu absolutely exceeded my expectations. I was blown away by the fish and chips; the fish was moist with a light batter and wasn't oily at all. The burgers, Irish stew, and shepherd's pie were all delectable as well. The real standout, however, was the sockeye salmon in a pesto preserved lemon broth--it was so addictive that I wish I could replicate the recipe at home. It is very easy to see why this spot has received so many accolades, and I would love to return the next time we are back in Victoria!

We are big fans of traditional fare, but the Block is a place we are so glad we experienced and will certainly return utilizing the knowledge we garnered during our first experience. A big thank you to for helping us through picking one price fixe January exploration of your local restaurants and filling it with other ala carte additions. As we often do we ordered far too much food, wanting to explore everything off a menu that is far reaching. Not sure if our additions worked with the price fixe menu, but we sure enjoyed checking everything out. The interior is interesting with the addition of structural steel in the space to keep this heritage building (I think) standing tall for a few generations. We sure hope it's still here for a long while and will most likely come again the next time we are in Victoria. That is saying a lot as there are a wide range of restaurants in the neighbourhood, but you do want to check the Block out!

The place wasn't too busy and the bartender poured us a sample of four different whiskeys. The #11 was my fave. A nice rye. Not too spicy. We only got one beer and it was a beer type we don't often get, a Dunkel style beer with a funny name called Creepy Uncle. The logo is fun on the bottle and it will be a name for a beer I won't soon forget. With the beer in the flavor profile you can expect to find maltiness witha hint of vanilla and nuttiness with an appropriate amount of sweetness. The beer is smooth and light bodied. It's a good one to sit down to and relax when you have that desire to unwind.

Phillips was long on my list of breweries to try and despite Canada being very close to where we are located trips there remain highly infrequent. So finally getting to try some more breweries from the north was an extra perk to our trip! The beer that Steve and I had from this brewery was the TILT Lager and it proved itself to be a good one also! With a nice breadiness and a natural sweetness to it. There is a clean and crisp finish to this beer which we always enjoy experiencing with beers. This beer is light bodied and is easy to have more than one of but we behaved ourselves and shared this refreshing lager.
