We were staying at the Empress and wandered over to Bartholomew's for a quick drink (though the food menu also sounded great!). We were greeted and seated immediately, and our friendly waitress was quick to make some recs! My husband built his own G&T with a fun saffron gin, which he loved, and I had one of the best Irish coffees I've had in years. Service: 2 out of 5 stars The service was good, once it got to you. As you can see from my photos, it was not crowded inside. We were seated promptly and then just as promptly forgotten about. I mean, it took such a long time to address us, that we nearly got up and left. Once the server arrived and asked for our drink orders, my wife asked if she could try a type of beer and the server was off... before asking anybody else what they wanted to drink. Again, it was a long time before she returned. She was friendly when she was around. But it was extremely frustrating to watch 3 employees walking by us and not make contact us in any way, not even eye contact. Food: 3 out if 5 stars The food was nothing to call home about. My wife got the Thai peanut bowl and the lettuce in the bowl was wilted. But she said the chicken and the rest of it was good. Our friend got the French dip and she said it was good as well. I shared the chicken strips and fries with my daughter and they were mediocre. They offer honey mustard OR ranch to dip the chicken in but they would not give me both. Excellent English pub in the same building as the Doubletree Hilton - better than anything we found in the UK on a recent trip! We stopped by for a late lunch (after 2 pm) and it was mostly empty, but we got great service. We ordered drinks - Guinness for me, a Spaniard G&T for my better half, and a Shirley Temple for our teen (in Canada they are add OJ). Our server also helped us order some appetizers: crispy dry ribs, chicken wings, classic poutine (with pulled pork) and langos. All the food was delicious; we each liked something different, and there were NO LEFTOVERS!! Bill was over $100, and we tipped generously as the service was exceptional. A happy surprise. We actually stumbled upon this place because I was looking for gluten free fish & chips. Our new "go-to place" in Victoria! We had dinner here 3 times during our week up here. Great selection of beers on tap (31?), cocktails and happy hour 3-6pm specials on drinks and food. I had some good local IPAs (18oz pours). I had poutine with bacon (great gravy) and also bangers and mash (excellent). Spouse had Langos (fry bread) and potato skins and shared a Caesar salad. Server clearing up told us about the Beef dip that "she was obsessed with" - so next time! I forgot to take a picture of the bangers and mash. Please come to Bartholomew's if you enjoy being insulted and demeaned by staff. A group of my friends (at most 9-10 people) and I came in for the weekly trivia night. The majority of the staff were kind and helpful. We ordered a couple drinks and meals. After around 30 minutes, our server checked on us and noticed we were really invested in the trivia. I believe after that she did not come back for maybe another half an hour. This was totally reasonable, though we were intending to order more drinks and food when she did come back. Keep in mind that the trivia night is advertised as taking up to three hours with four separate rounds in total. During the time frame where our server had not visited us, a male staff member (whom I assume is the same staff member a majority of these negative reviews are about) came up to us and began to insult us. His issue was that we weren't ordering enough to justify being there. This would be reasonable if: 1. Our server had been with us more than twice in an hour. 2. It wasn't an advertised trivia night where it was not stated anywhere that groups must continue to order overpriced food for three hours in order to participate. 3. There weren't multiple empty tables surrounding our table (it was a random Thursday evening). 4. This was an establishment that was more prestigious than a pub hidden in a back corner of Victoria BC. Still, if all he had done was politely tell us we need to order more to justify our stay, I would not be writing this. Instead, he insulted us by saying that the pub was "not a charity" and "not a community centre". He told us that we were not ordering enough to take up 16 seats (there was never 16 of us). When we tried to mention that we had indeed ordered and planned to order more, he said that wasn't enough. He made it very clear that us sitting there was costing him money. I believe wholeheartedly that he only felt like he could speak like this to us because a majority of us are in our 20s. He felt justified treating us like children and not paying customers. It should be noted that at no point were we being loud or disrespectful. We all sat quietly as he talked down to us, simply waiting for it to be over. After that, we waited for our server, ordered what we intended to, played our last rounds of trivia, and never saw him again. I don't know who this man is or where he gets off on insulting guests. The absolute arrogance and disrespect that one man can carry is sickening. And it seems like this is an ongoing problem. I can guarantee that Bartholomew's will lose more money from us never coming back than they supposedly did from our visit last night. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a shame because the food was good, the other staff were nice, the beer was cheap, and the trivia was fun.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] However, it was certainly not worth this treatment. A full rack was still very small, not meaty, a bit over cooked, and dry. Ribs seemed like they were deep fried and then sauce thrown on top. The accompanying Mac cheese had too many things going on...bacon, green Chile peppers, etc. abut the cole slaw was fine. Warm, relaxed, friendly pub atmosphere with old school charm located in the arcade level of the Double Tree Hotel. They make a great and refreshing Pimm's cup. The mussels steamed in a tomato herb broth were delicious and served with 2 pieces of buttery focaccia bread. The mussels were fresh and the tomato herb broth was so good that it could be eaten like a soup. I dined on a Sunday evening and they were serving a Sunday roast consisting of roast beef and mashed potatoes served with brown gravy, vegetables (red peppers, asparagus, carrots), and 2 Yorkshire puddings. I opted for the Sunday roast 3 course dinner that comes with either a salad or soup, Sunday roast as mentioned above, and a dessert (sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream or a seasonal cheesecake). The salad was fresh and the balsamic honey vinaigrette was delicious. The roast beef was tender and flavorful with the gravy. The vegetables were fresh and well prepared. The mashed potatoes were OK and tasted like instant mashed potatoes. The Yorkshire pudding was baked well and tasty. For dessert, I got the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream and it was amazing and one of the best desserts I've had in long time. The service was friendly and could be a little more attentive as it took awhile to get the check. If you are looking for a relaxed place to eat and/or drink that's off the beaten path, Bartholomew's is the place to try. read more

Came walking around the downtown area and parliament building. Stumbled across this pub and went in for some drinks. I was super surprised and pleased with the service. Our server was amazing and provided some great recommendations. Me and the bf got the Prim's cup, our first time having one and I must say, I am in love. The garnishes were different in every cup we ordered, but we did not mind it. I will say, the mints do make a difference! We also got some wings n calamari. Absolutely perfect. First let's start with the drink I had a house Old Fashion, let's say perfection (photo below)...followed by the Toad in the Hole (that was my food). Sounds gross, but I promise it was awesome. It only represents a fun name. It's loads of shaved roast beef, brown gravy, mashed potatoes, fresh vegetables and a little Yorkshire pudding (deliciously delivered bread in the shape of an upside down mushroom). We were tourists in Victoria and we were told to visit Red Fish Blue Fish by folks on the ferry. Unfortunately, we visited Victoria on the BC Day so all the restaurant/food locations we wanted to visit were closed. Came here because we really wanted to try Victoria's famous fish and chips. Waited a couple of minutes for someone to serve us when we got there, probably low staff situation. Once we got served, it was pretty quickly from there. Tried the Fish and Chips w/ gravy and was immediately blown away. The fish was crisp and light and I really enjoyed the light batter. We got the gravy with the fries (chips) and it was a great introduction to poutine in my opinion. It was better than gravy you have during thanksgiving, I felt like I could drink that. I am gluten intolerant, and was thrilled to find that they serve all three varieties of our locally made Category 12 Breakthru series de-glutened beer, as well as lots of gluten free food on offer. I had the calamari, and while it was way too over-salted (even for me, who is a salt addict), it was otherwise delicious and clearly house-made. The service was terrific! I will definitely be making this my go-to local. This bar has a really nice atmosphere and is a fun place to stop off for a drink. They seem like they get a variety of regulars and have multiple tvs if watching sports is your thing. I like to sit at the bar where it's easy to get super fast service and I appreciate their multi stall bathrooms. I also appreciate the signs alerting me that minors are only allowed at certain times. It was here that I first learned of Music Bingo and enjoyed a game. My boyfriend was overly happy with his prize of thick stone coasters which still sit on our coffee table. On our most recent visit he enjoyed the Signature Double Seafood Caesar which comes with a mussel, some shrimp and a variety of veggies. I was happy to discover they have a veg friendly version called the Californian made with carrot juice and V8. The beer selection here is pretty good as well, plus it's a great place to get in out of the cold and rest your feet after walking around all day. read more
