A dear friend and I had lunch at Garten recently and it was superb! Our server was very friendly, attentive and very helpful. We sat out on the patio and it was very pleasant beautifully decorated and I'm looking forward to sitting by their beautiful fireplace this fall. We had their lunch special which included a sandwich, salad, and cookie. I had their Rueben sandwich, house salad and the cookie of the day which was a s'mores cookie. The portion size is extremely generous. My sandwich was absolutely delicious with tender tasty corn beef and my salad was a meal in itself and delicious. First off, what I hidden gem!!! Nestled in Severna Park with ample indoor and outdoor seating. Certainly nice touch of artesian elegance in perseverance. We ate here recently with my daughter, her husband and their daughter. The restaurant itself is so beautiful with a very chill vibe . Lots of outdoor seating and inside lots of lights and plants . I would love to go when it's warmer so we could sit outside. We started with the smoked salmon dip that came with potato logs -( think giant tater tots ! ) it was an excellent starter . The potatoes were to die for!! For entrees I got the crispy ribs and the scallops- actually 2 different appetizers. The ribs were delicious. The scallops were very good as well- it was quite a generous portion. Husband got the mushroom cheesesteak which he said was ok - a few too many pickles on top. Daughter got a sausage platter which she like - the German potato salad was not a hit with anyone- very liquidy . I had two mocktails ( purple autumn) delicious and beautiful presentation. Husband and daughter got the old fashioned- they liked it but husband is not a fan of the one big ice cube and not much liquor! We finished with an order of dirt - it was to die for! We decided to check this out since we are HUGE fans of Preserve in Annapolis and owner's Jeremy and Michelle Hoffman (Amazing people). It was a fabulous experience across the board...service, decor and food, all fantastic. Strongly recommend reservations but the wait was not bad with drinks and comfortable seating in the gorgeous garden area. What a unique little find in Maryland that's not specific to DC or Baltimore! We went in the evening so couldn't see the little garden but I could tell it was there along with some bees. The bar had an interesting indoor outdoor thing going on where it was half covered and half open. We got the cheese board that was delicious, loved the honey and wish they sold it there. The Garten is a newer German restaurant located in Severna Park. They offer parking and the indoor/outdoor vibe is adorable! Our server let us know that all of their wine is organic and privately sourced so they will always have the best wine selection! They have many vegetarian and vegan food options as well as for the meat eaters. Most german food spots do not offer vegetarian foods! For the drinks they use their garden to garnish and probably also for flavor! I just love that this spot is very natural/environmentally friendly. I definitely recommend that everyone checks this place out! They have something for everyone and the location is intimate and local. read more

I randomly came across this restaurant when I was driving to the B&A trail to go for a run, and I saw how cute this place looked from the outside, so I took note of the name so I could look it up when I got home later. To my surprise, this restaurant actually barely opened last month! And I saw that the owners of Preserve opened up this restaurant and I've yet to try Preserve, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. My husband loves The Old Stein Inn, but it's so far from us and honestly, I'm not a huge fan because they only have one vegetarian item and it's pretty bland (which I know German food actually is quite bland for a vegetarian anyway). Anyway, I saw they had vegetarian options here, so I was excited to try it. I don't know if they can accommodate walk-ups, but I made a reservation online and it was actually pretty filled up already for the weekend so I was lucky to get a spot! The restaurant is pretty tiny, but when the weather is nice, they do seat outside as well. The waiting area was real cute, but can only seat about 2 people waiting. The restaurant is definitely boujee, but such a cute place. The decor is modern and kind of artistic. Onto the food, I got the jalapeno business sandwich with plant-based sausage (and I never liked sausage as a meat-eater), but I loved this! We tried to get the pretzel as an appetizer, but that was sold out, so we got the baked brie and that was actually better than we were expecting. It came with jam (yum) and mustard (weird?). My husband got the chicken schnitzel platter and he liked all the sauces it came with, but he wished they had a pork schnitzel platter option because that's his go-to at German restaurants normally. The fries also were so yummy! They are the crinkle cut kind, which I love. My husband got it with the warm raclette cheese and I got mine with the curry ketchup. I loved both, but definitely want to try it with the obatzda cheese next time since I'm curious what that tastes like. The only con I have is that this place is pretty pricey. What a gem! Stopped in for lunch on Sunday on the way back to DC from Delaware. Totally loved the vibe as soon as we pulled in. Sat outside at a picnic table as we had our dog with us. The hostess turned on the heat lamp for us and it was lovely. She also brought over a bowl of water for the dog and a special homemade dog treat --so sweet. Our server was attentive and very friendly. Had two of the Hefeweizens on tap, the ribs to start (delish!), the schnitzel and a breakfast sandwich on a pretzel bun. Everything was super tasty and high quality. I'm surprised to see reviews on here complaining about the 4% "Labor of Love" fee added to the bill. It goes towards benefits to their staff which I think is a fantastic policy. It's clearly called out on the check with a link to more info on what the charge is and why they do it. Original Review Below: Great concept and design but failure to execute the basics holds them back. First the pros, it's a beautifully decorated restaurant. That's about it for the pros. Be very careful when booking online reservations. We selected "inside seating" but due to "system issues" that was evidently not guaranteed and we were given outside seating. This is not ideal on a cold winter day with little to no heaters. We ended up walking out and going to another establishment as they couldn't accommodate our indoor request. Hopefully, Garten can workout their issues. I hope the ownership considers changing from Tock and using a superior reservation systems such as Resy. read more

We have heard and read about all the rave over this new restaurant in Severna Park. We finally were able to get a reservation on a Saturday at 2 pm. We were seated in the beer and wine shop which isn't the prime seating area in this restaurant. The interior lighting was a little dim too but the overall atmosphere is very cozy and inviting. They did a fantastic job with the renovations and upgrades which was formally Cafe Breton. We ordered the German schnitzel and sausage platters with a few sides and everything was excellent. Very well prepared and delicious. The wait was a bit long for the main dishes but like most new restaurants, they are still working out the kinks. The only real pitfall beyond getting a reservation is the parking lot is undersized and you may not find a space. We will return for sure and try some of the other dishes. Labor of Love $7.66 Cash Tips $5.00 and on top of that the suggested tips of 20-22% Apparently the labor of love is a 4% charge to all guests so they can provide fair benefits to their hard working employees. I tip very well for good service so having required fees on top of my meal cost absolutely unbelievable to me. I can only assume that they believe adding it separately rather than burying it in the food cost is somehow more effective. I find it offensive And needless to say I won't be going back. read more

Our group was a mix of hardcore vegans and inveterate carnivores all of whom found more than one way to slake their appetite. An HOUR from ordering to food arrives, which was hot. The place was very crowded and the staff, when they could interact, were friendly. Either they were understaffed or poorly managed, or both. We tried Garten for the first time. It's in such a little hidden area of Severna Park off B&A. I've seen this location in years past and was so impressed on how they were able to update it from an old, lost cafe to a very cute, cozy and modern place. I loved the aesthetic of both the inside and outside. We came in January, but cannot wait to try it when it's warmer. The inside felt cozy and inviting with the fireplace and plants all around. Our server was very sweet and the hostess was very friendly and accommodating, even on such a busy night. We shared the pretzel appetizer with the raclette, which as you can see we dig right into. I was happy to see they had a "mock tail" menu, as I'm am expecting but still wanted to partake in the beer garden vibe. I had the schnitzel sandwich and let me tell you how much this tasted like an elevated chick-fil-a sandwich. It was so good!! My only complaint here was about the fries - they were a bit limp My husband got the Doner Kebab sandwich, which he also enjoyed, however he did mention he thought it was a bit overloaded with lamb and difficult to eat on such a crunchy pita. Went there for a commemorative lunch honoring the birthday of our late "Memaw" ( great grandma ). Driven past this establishment numerous times but never stopped in. Having the lunch here was my nieces idea, she said she had been to Garten several times with T-Bear ( grandma ). Did not know what to expect that afternoon. Appearances are deceiving. Mildly campy ski chalet exterior with an inviting, well thought out cozy interior. Quite large dinning area not overly lit but still easy to read the menu. No wait for a table and pleased to see everyone dining had been seated with space between groups of diners, lending to a sense of privacy. Wait staff courteous and smartly exchanged pleasantries while passing out menus. You will appreciate the simplified menu. Ingredients are listed for each appetizer, entree, desert and drinks for those that suffer from allergies. Unable to finish generous sized appetizer before entrees arrived. Food was hot, smelled wonderful and tasted great. Again portions were generous so bring your appetite! I was really smitten by the fact I felt no compulsion to attempt to add any seasoning to my meal. Everything was spot on. My compliments to the chef and their staff. Finally want to mention that the wait staff serving us was attentive and polite without being "pushy" at all. We did not feel rushed, no, quite the opposite, we felt very relaxed at Garten. We loved the previous restaurant at this location and were curious to see what Garten was. Now we know, and we will go again sometime. Staff is great and attentive. Surprisingly, the thing you'd expect to be off-the-charts -- the sausages, the staple of German restaurants everywhere - were just "fine". BUT. Once it became currywurst with fries, boom. So good. Once you had it with the sauerkraut and red cabbage, hooray! I think getting some better sausages might kick it up a notch. Oh yeah - the pretzel apps are excellent, the desserts are great (get the Chocolate Mousse!) and the bartender is ... daring. In a good way. If they still have the Yukon Smoke (mezcal-based) get it if you like the smoky and citrus combination. We will be back to try the non-sausage dishes. I've driven by this place so many times when it was the Breton Cafe or somesuch. Saw that they remodeled, adding a beer garden recently and decided to give it a try. Both my husband and I were stationed in Germany and the food here is very much like a German gasthaus. The menu is not extensive, which makes it easy to make a decision although for me, it's always gonna be the bratwurst and red cabbage. This little neighborhood place is in a great location. The covered and heated patio is accessible in most weather. The interior is small and crowded. The food is sort of based on contemporary German fare - not a favorite of mine, but that's a personal thing. The garden in back is great. It's just off the B&A Trail, though currently not easily accessible by bike, which is a shame. read more
