I recently took my Gibson Les Paul guitar to this shop for a minor modification. The fretboard edge binding had sharp edges that I wanted smoothed (rolled, tumbled, etc.). I couldn't be more pleased with the service and the outcome of the work. Fernando and Michael helped me when I went in to drop off the guitar. They were very friendly and helped make sure they understood what I wanted done. Michael inspected the guitar and pointed out few minor issues that could be addressed with some setup adjustments. The price was was very reasonable and much less than I expected. The work was completed within the time estimate I was given. When I came back in, Fernando plugged the guitar in for me to play and try out. The neck feels sublime with the smoothed binding and the setup changes made it play even better. They give customers up to six months to make any additional setup adjustments, but so far, I don't think that'll be necessary. Gary's shop has some very famous, high end clients, yet they treat average Joes with the same service and respect as the superstars. read more

Gary did a set up on my vintage P Bass and did a great job. He has quite a back-up, so people who expect overnight work, or even the next week, need to set their expectations accordingly. I told them I had a rehearsal and gig schedule and needed my instrument, so we scheduled a period a couple weeks out when I would bring it in and that worked great, I was only missing my bass a few days. Another time when I was having an electronics issue I brought it in, thinking it was a big deal, and Gary fixed it for me on the spot in five minutes. I asked him what I owed and he just waved me off. The guys who work there other than Gary can come off as odd sometimes, but whatever. He took my friend's vintage Mustang and set it up lefty for him and did a great job. I would recommend him to anyone with patience. A few of the negative reviews on here seem like they just had some expectation of someone kissing their ass and returning their instrument to them the next day. As a woman who plays guitar going to the guitar store can be a nightmare. I've been ignored mostly and treated like I suck before i even pick a guitar up, and then there's the fact that everyone just assumes i play acoustic....which I don't. I've stood around for like 20 minutes while some silly dude schralped on and on "showing me what this baby can do", when all I wanted to do was try the damn guitar out myself .....so i could see if i wanted to buy it. Both boring and irritating and it get's worse but I'll spare you the details. Long story, but what I'm trying to say is that this place is awesome. I've been going in there for years and never get any attitude. Everyone has been super nice and helpful. It's one of the only places I feel really comfortable. They've always been really fast and done a great job. They even helped identify a mysterious buzzing and fixed it in a day. They are trustworthy and I wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

Needed full set-up on my Jackson DKMG Arch (w/ the active EMG 81 & 85 humbuckers). It also wields a Floyd Rose bridge so I knew it would be costly. At check-in we talked about my style and what they can do to make my axe all that it can be for my budget. I had a full set-up, extensive fret work (hand re-fit & milled using a Plek system), & I upped the string gauge so the bridge was reset & fine-tuned. - Got it done in 1 week, I was quoted a 2-week TAT. - Pricey (my service came to $260) but they do great work. - Offer 1 year of support for playability tuning. I do want to take it back as they offered to tutor me on the Floyd Rose; I was too excited that I forgot to take them up on their offer. - They care about your instrument; it is in good hands. Brought my Gretsch Hot Rod in for an overall set up, a plekking, a new nut and bridge. When I installed my Sperzel locking tuners, I started to have a lot of tuning issues. Especially my "D" string would bind in the nut. I tried to smooth out the nut and bridge slots, but an amateurish attempt at that! So, off it went to Gary Brawer's expert hands. I wanted to get everything done all at once, so I asked for a new nut, a new bridge and to have them pin the bridge to the top. No problem for these guys. Reading some of the reviews on here about the time it takes and the lack of phone calls, I resigned myself for a wait. Well, lo & behold, I get a call on the Tuesday after I dropped off my guitar!!! WOO-HOO!!! Wonderful! I get it home and play it. The action is an absolute dream! Clear tone, no buzzing, no fretting out. Just great sound. The PLEK is an amazing device!!! Even the fretboard looked better!!! Unfortunately, the strings are still binding in the nut with even moderate Bigsby use. I let it 'settle' thinking that it just needs time to adjust itself to a warm house. So, after a few days it's still binding. I call them up and no problems-'Bring it in and we'll make it right'. Next free weekend, I head out and drop it off and show them what is happening to my guitar. They decide to wait until Gary himself has a chance to look over it and see if there is anything he can do. Gary is out at NAMM and won't be back until the following week. So, after a few weeks of waiting, I call to follow up and I'm promised a call back in 24 hours. Nothing. Next week, I call and speak with Gary personally and he said that he will personally work on my guitar and work on the nut slots and the bridge saddles and the Bigsby. The following week, I finally get out there and pick it up. I try it out in the shop and it feels good. But, wait for the acid test when I get it home. Get home, switch on my '67 Super Reverb and let the tubes warm up. Plug in, tune up and play. IT IS FABULOUS!!! After about 10 minutes of playing and Bigsby use, I check the tuning against the tuner. Everything is dead on! HAT'S OFF GARY!!! Yes, there is a wait. Yes, they may not be the best at calling you back, but they are the best in the bay. They are also one of the only places in Northern California that has a PLEK machine. Gary and the staff there were all top notch and very good at what they do. One Friday night, when our wives were away, my best friend and I decided to get together and rehearse songs for our band Hellhunter (great fuckin name, huh?!) Anyway, after numerous attempts, we finally just finished writing a brand new song called Grave Desecrator. So, we decide to take a break and listen to some music (Nifelheim or Black Goat, I forget) for inspiration for more material. While listening to the tunes we were finishing polishing off an 18 pack of Miller Lite (cheap beer rules, get over it) and I leaned my beloved 1967 Gibson Flying V re-issue against the couch. Unfortunately, I didn't place the guitar in a secure enough spot and the axe slides off the arm of the couch and comes crashing to the floor! And on the way down, one of the tuning pegs gets caught against the near by end table and splits the headstock of my beloved V. "Oh shit!!" The headstock split off between the 2nd and 3rd tuning peg and I was fucking pissed. I've only had the guitar for a few months and a well crafted guitar like this should have this kind of damage from such a fall. Anyway, at this point I figure I'm gonna have to spend some bucks replacing the neck and head stock or replacing the guitar. I knew I had to get some work done, but I didn't kow where to get my precious guitar fixed, so I ventured on Earth-Dog.com and asked my fellow metalheads where a good place to get my V fixed. Many recommended Gary Brawer. So I decided to bring my Gibson Flying V '67 reissue in to have the broken it fixed. I actually thought it was unrepairable but no, these kind souls put it back together. Not only did they fix it, they made a couple of adjustments that made the guitar play even better. I'm an intermediate rhythm guitar player. I've had sucky to average guitars before, but decided to finally move to a big boy guitar. Prior to this puppy, my guitars had been set up by my old guitar teacher. I needed to get a pick-up installed. After calling around, I first took my guitar into SFguitarworks. The guy was nice and all, but at the end of the day he quoted me $190 for the pickup installation. He also said my frets were uneven, and if i wanted to get the guitar to play comfortably, I'd have to lower the action, which required me to even out the frets first. The whole shabang would've been $190+$250+$10 (the cost to put on a guitar button). I had just paid a little under $1000 for the guitar. The pickup and all this setup work was going to cost me near $700, over half the guitar! Luckily I gave Gary Brawer's a ring. Fernando, was super nice. Really made sure to explain things thoroughly. Trevor told me that he didn't believe that I needed any fretwork, but if I did he'd do it for free. For the pickup installation, lowering the action, and evening of the frets, it totalled up to $250. $500, ridiculous. I understand that guitar adjustments have alot to do with taste and preference, so I don't want to be quick to judge SF guitarworks... but if someone was going to offer me the same result for $500 less, I was going to take it. I met Gary too, who explained how my somewhat complicated pickup worked. Awesome guy as well. Fernando, Trevor, and Gary all seem like standup guys. They made sure to be classy, and not bash SFGuitarworks, even though they had an opportunity too. Guitar plays just as expected. I will definitely come here again for any guitar needs. read more

After trying out a few different shops in the East Bay since moving here and being disappointed, I decided to give Gary Brawer's shop a go, and wish I would have sooner. I've had a few acoustic guitars and electric basses worked on by these guys over the last year or so (D-35, J45, AJ, a Jazz and a Precision bass). I've had them PLEK a few and set them up, had bone nuts and saddles made for different guitars, and most recently had them install a K&K into my J45. I've also had them perform Gibson warranty work since they're an authorized Gibson repair facility, which saved me a ton of time and hassle not having to ship the guitar back to Gibson. The setup they did on my Gibson AJ is the best that guitar has ever been. It's incredible. I can't say a bad thing about these guys. Gary is super down to earth and easy to work with and talk to (and very patient!) and his crew is awesome (even Fernando). If you know what you want, are honest with your ability and know what kind of setup your playing style works best with you'll love this place. And if you have no clue, fear not and just trust them because they know what they are doing! They may not be the least expensive shop in town, but these guys are the real deal, do great work and really do want to make the customer happy. Definitely a satisfied customer here. read more

I would say these people are the BEST repair folks in town. Hands down. Turnaround time is always decent and costs are fair. They also are one of the few places in town who handle single string requests- for a person like myself who plays pedal steel, ablilty to get a customized set of strings on a moment's notice is important. and they always deliver. Several months ago, Gary and the guys restored my 61 esquire back to its original form. i chose a pristine paint job rather than a relic-ed rebirth. this baby was in rough shape. needed a fret job, pickup rewound. bridge, pickguard, everything. it took a while, but i'm a patient guy, especially when it came back as if it was brand new back in the day. it plays fantastic. Gary and his staff are excellent at what they do. I have: - brought in 2 Telecasters to them for setup work, one to be converted to higher action for Open E slide and the other generally setup, pickup installation in both, installed a killswitch in each, and eliminated hum and fret buzz as well as rewired the guts of one of them, - brought in my Martin D-15 to be refretted and to receive a new nut, and to have a new pickup with onboard eq added as well as a dedicated strap peg, - had them setup my Crafter acoustic as an open D guitar ideal for finger picking action-wise as well as added a sound hole pickup. They're really nice folks and they are fun to joke around with while you wait. When you've been to one [bass] guitar repair shop, and they exceed your expectations, why go elsewhere? First impressions are huge in the service industry, which leads me to the "front man", Fernando. He'll write you up, consults with a shop specialist in front of you, and sets the customer's expectations. Expect at least 30 days in the shop, it's not a negative, it's a reality. Gary Brawer and his staff are no neophytes, they're just that damn good. Driving from Vallejo into downtown San Francisco [SOMA] @ 4PM on a Friday is no cake walk. He re-fretted my silver anniversary strat and it like brand new. I went back in time 1979 ,took a Fender anniv strat off the wall. Its now in my hands He put a Floyd Rose locking tremolo on my 2017 strat. The quality of the work is excellent. Thank you Gary! read more

I took my Parker in last month to have it overhauled yet that didn't happen. I went in knowing what I wanted done to my guitar but Fernando proceeded to belittle me and talk me out of, so-to-speak, what I wanted. Aside from the overhaul I had a switch that needed to be replaced. I started to tell Fernando that I wanted to wire it up similar to Pete Thorn's signature Suhr. THREE TIMES, his only reply was, "Well, you won't sound like Pete Thorn." Three f$#*ing times!!!! Fine, you don't want to do it I'll take it somewhere else later. And, thanks for treating me like I've been playing for 6 months...I know damn good and well I'll STILL SOUND LIKE ME! But, with some very cool wiring options. But no. So, I relented to just tapping the humbuckers...fine for now. I then asked him to put it in for a full set up. Fernando starts his crap AGAIN! "Why are we doing that? We're only touching the electronics!" Well, since I brought in a heavier gauge string to put on the guitar, I thought it would be a great idea. But no. Again, I can get a set up elsewhere AND it would in fact be cheaper anyways. Even though I wanted the guitar gone through so it was like new, I left it for just the switch repair and to gut the electronics. To my surprise, my guitar was not finished when promised. When I called about it, I was just lucky enough to get Fernando himself, who told me my guitars was indeed not ready and that "IF" his tech came in the next day (a Friday!) then it MIGHT get done. If not, then I could pick it up next week sometime. WOW! I thought this was BRAWER repair. Home of the guitar stars...I guess you only get that kind of treatment if you ARE a star! The day it was worked on I got a voicemail at 11:49 AM from our great customer service representative, Fernando, stating that they did not have a black switch (my guitar is all black, no chrome). They could order one or install a chrome switch. Well, before I could even call the place back (literally just less than an hour!) Fernando leaves another message that says, and I quote, "Jake. Fernando here at Brawer. Parker. Done. Pick it up." WTF?!?!?! That's Gary's idea of customer service?!?!?!? The guy can't even speak in complete sentences?!?!?! He just barks commands at people?!?!?!? WOW!!! The day I picked it up thank GOD Fernie was at lunch or something. (The guy who did check me out that day was totally awesome!) But, alas, I pulled my Parker out of the case to find only two push pull pots were replaced and there's a HIDEOUS chrome switch on my ALL BLACK guitar. I bet you wouldn't pull that crap on Satriani, Santana, etc!! Shouldn't happen to ANYBODY. Period. I will say that the work that WAS done, was done very well. To bad ol' Fernie got in the way of a job WELL done. I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I am to have taken my most favorite guitar to these guys. I really, honestly thought they were the SHIT, that is until I actually experienced them. SO, now I guess I'm left with the task of finding someone who can actually do my guitar RIGHT, not half assed. So very bummed... P.S. I get my guitar home and there is a nice ding in the finish. Wish I would have noticed they dropped my guitar (or something) before I left the store. Never be able to prove it now. I guess I'll try and take the blame for that since I brought it in in a gig bag. Still...shouldn't happen in ANY shop, let alone Gary's. read more

Long story short: replica 59 les paul suffered a snapped headstock. Heart breaking accident. Fortunately, these guys repaired it beautifully - to the point that you can't even tell it was snapped in the first place. And, an excellent plek job has her playing better than ever. I brought my Thunderbird bass here with a cracked neck and pickup output problems. They did a terrific job in fixing the crack, getting a good pickup output and doing a good setup; two previous technicians had done poor setups on this bass. Gary also cut a new bone nut that replaced the stock Tektoid nut. The bass sounds terrific and I'm really happy. The thing to keep in mind if you bring an instrument here is that it's going to take awhile for them to get the job done, as the demand for their work forces them to prioritize repairs and yours may not get done until they have the time. read more

After a bad experience at Norman's rare guitars, I switched to my local shop, Gary Brawer's guitar repair. Amazing decision. They were nice from the instant I came in! After a minute of jamming, they were impressed and let me play some VERY nice equipment, including the amplifier of a famous guitarist who I will not name (in case I'm not supposed to have played that amp.) Everyone there was kind, the shop had great gear, and they were helpful and knowledgeable. The guitar repair is very skilled and Gary is a spectacular luthier. I have this Tyler that had everything going for it, except it needed a great setup. I dropped it off at Gary Brawer's on a Wednesday and they had it done by Friday. I'm a mid-20s full time/touring musician. I've been taking all of my guitars to Gary for around 5 years, and have been incredibly satisfied. The work has always been great. Everything from setups, minor repairs, fixing broken headstocks, adding in coil taps/extra controls (drilling/re-routing), etc. And on the rare occasion something isn't right, I can bring it back and have it tweaked so it's right. Reading some of the negative reviews on here really surprise me. I've never had trouble getting in touch with Gary or the shop, or getting a guitar back in time (and there have definitely been times when I have brought guitars in with ridiculous rushes!). Gary and everybody else I've dealt with at the shop (Allen and Fernando) have always made me feel like they care. I get the sense that some of those who have had bad experiences maybe went in with bad attitudes. The GB repair shop does great pro work. It's not cheap, but I'm not willing to sacrifice quality when it comes to guitar repair. If you're looking for cheap work, I hear that Guitar Center is doing repairs now. In the meantime, I'll be bringing my guitar to Gary. read more

I've been going to Brawer's for years and have had my 1974 Les Paul re-fretted and set up in the past. Recently, I brought my new Ibanez RG3570 in to have Gary look at a paint chip problem and to see if this could be a warranty issue. He communicated via email, and spent time with me for no charge and was very helpful as usual. The fact that almost ALL the pro's and top names in the area use Gary's and they are always busy should tell you something right there. What really gets me are all the assholes who give bad reviews and then finish with... I'll only go to Guitar works, or whatever, in a veiled attempt to promote THEIR buddy or the shop they use. The fact is Brawers IS the best...hands down and no, they are NOT cheap! If thats what you want, go down to the local music/stereo shop and have them work on your axe. read more

These guys are the best! I went in thinking that I needed a re-fret, when all I actually needed was a set-up and lowering of the action on my acoustic-electric. I dealt directly with Fernando and Michael. These guys are absolute legends! They are 2 of the most experienced guys out there and gave me their honest opinion. So while they could've charged me $500+ for a refret, they saved me $400 bucks by doing a $100 set-up. Michael worked on my guitar and did a great job! ALSO, they knew that I had several upcoming gigs that I needed it for, so they were able to get it done a week ahead of time. Seriously, I will not go anywhere else for guitar work in the future. Just a note to say I have been taking guitars here for years and Gary and his crew always do great work and take extra care to find a solution for hard-to-solve problems. They fixed a problem with volume balance between pickups on a bass by installing a blend dial vs. a switch (which works great), and recently went out of their way to fix a tuning issue I had on a beloved SG. I had my 1974 les Paul signature fixed here. The wiring was all messed up it and it was really difficult to work on from what I hear. Guitar center couldn't figure it out. Leo at Gary's shop figured it out. Also when I was picking up the guitar when it was finished Joe Satriani was inside ripping like crazy. I didn't bother him but I did double take at him. Pretty cool shop, nice people, and they do awesome work. My job cost 175$. Not too bad considering it's a hellish guitar to work on. read more

I recently bought a Strat from the guitar shop in the front (Real Guitars) and it needed some very minor parts, a little TLC, nothing major. Real Guitars told me that they didn't have any parts but that the "guys at the back" could help me out. I showed them what I needed (a pickguard, a back-plate, some screws, etc.) and the were super helpful and friendly, despite the fact that they were clearly very busy, and not making very much money from me. They made sure the parts I needed were going to fit before I purchased them. Though I have never had any repairs done here, the customer service I received was excellent. Based on that alone I would be most inclined to take my guitar back there for repairs, if the need ever arose, "knock on wood". read more

Gary himself is cool but I went in to get my guitar fixed up and the gentleman told me it would be ready by next week. One month later I called to see how the repair was going and they explained something must have messed up in the computer and they hadn't started it yet, but it would be top priority and since it wasn't anything hard they would expedite it so they would call me 3 days at the latest when it was finished. One week later I called to see what was up. It had been finished but they hadn't called me for some reason. I got my guitar back but for some reason the high B string was still fretting and buzzing. Thankfully they have a return policy where if anything is wrong with it they will repair it for free. So I took it in, they said it would be ready in a day or two and I'd receive a call. But surprise, I called a week later and they said it was done but they hadn't called me for some reason. I really wanted to like this place and maybe when I'm a big star like Joe Satriani they'll treat my stuff better but, I think I might try someplace out for next time. read more

worst service ever! Avoid this shop like the plague. The shop manager is a moron who is on speed or crack. they name toss like no tomorrow. They overcharge, take way too long, and do very bad job. I brought my classical guitar here for repair when it fell off my back in its gig bag (strap failed!) and the guitar hit the floor--hard. The lower bout was cracked to the waist and the face had partially ridden over the side and split as well. The hyper guy at the desk took the guitar and promised it would be done in 3 weeks. Six weeks later, after calling multiple times and having it explained that since I wasn't a professional musician, my repair wasn't really that important to them, I was able to get it back, with a lovely repair done by a quiet guy in the workshop. He did a very sweet repair, and if the front desk dude wasn't so damn irritating, I may go back here again. But I'm not sure. I might try SF guitarworks the next time. Over the years I have had a lot of work done on various guitars by Gary Brawer Repair. The major jobs included a neck reset on a Les Paul and having a second (neck) pickup added to a SG Junior. All of this was done to an EXTREMELY high standard. I know guys who own very valuable guitars (I'm talking 40s/50s guitars worth as much as a new car) and GB is where they take them for repairs. They are trustworthy and will do right by you. The downside of the place is that, since they get so busy, they sometimes take a while (e.g. longer than they originally estimate), but in a way that's also a good thing. Rather than rush a job, they wait until they can do it right . . . . . . oh yeah, and I know for a fact they charge an "A**hole tax" so if you're a typical douchie SF hipster musician, maybe tone down the attitude before going into GB. Basically, if you're upfront with them and aren't a jerk, you will get great service.
