Brought in my bari sax to be repaired - several tone holes were damaged when my student knocked my horn over. Shawn and I inspected the horn together and he assured me he could fix it but he sounded a little reticent. I called the next day to make sure he was up to the job - he said he was. We talked about a tool which would make the job easier but the repair was not contingent on that. A week goes by and Shawn calls me to say he can't repair my horn. Apparently he felt he needed this tool after all. Ok, I'm not dinging him for not being able to fix it. I am dinging him for not recognizing his limitations and being honest about what he can and can't do. And it would have saved me an additional trip, gas, bridge fare and my time. read more

A couple of weeks ago I got the trumpet I played in High School (more than a decade ago) out of my closet to take a look at how much work it would be to make it functional. It would be a lot for me but easy-peasy for the folks at Wind and Brass! They lubed the slides and valves, took out some dents, and polished it up all for a reasonable price. Then only challenge I had with them is they called when they finished but didn't leave a message so I had to call them back on my own to check. This is my go to repair shop. I take care of my instruments pretty well and have been lucky with them. The few times my luck ran out, this was the shop I went to. I went in to get a few repairs done on a used horn I had and ended up walking out with 2 horns. Although we did have some issues with the payment going through, Shawn was professional and made sure things got resolved within a few days. Shean an incredible craftsman! He has worked on all three of my trombones, and put them into top shape. Most recently, I had some small dings on the slide of my Bach 36 and he was able to fix it up for me within a week. When I went to pick it up, lo and behold, he had discovered an old pencil stuck in the bottom crook of the slide next to the spit valve. He painstakingly removed it, and now the ease of free playing, the range, the tone, the level of articulation possibilities, all have improved significantly! I've had the horn for about 10 years, and I just thought that the back pressure and relative difficulty in blowing it was a part of the mantra of Bach, classical horns. I guess not! I highly recommend Sean for work on brass instruments. He is a quiet and skilled genius craftsman! read more

Truth be told, I submitted my piccolo for repair back before Thanksgiving. I did not receive my piccolo back for another 2 months. Shawn made sure that I was informed about the delay and the status of where the missing parts were and what he was doing to try and expedite the process. My piccolo now plays like a dream and even though his shop is all the way across the bridge for me (I'm in SF), I'll continue to go to him for my instrument repairs. Very quick and nice repair on my clarinet! Thumbrest needed replacing and I got it back within a day. 10/10

They now have excellent guitar tech! I've brought 3 of my guitars to Jonathan so far, they all turned out great! 1) Yamaha Pacifica - Setup and Modification Had playability issue and noisy push/pull tone pot. Had him setup the guitar properly and replace the tone pot with mini toggle switch. 2) GF Guitars Ragnar Custom - Repair and Setup Had multiple playability issues which other guitar techs could not fix. This guitar was built in Portugal and the moisture difference must have caused the neck to warp in very weird ways. Jonathan took time to identify all issues and fixed it, now it plays better than ever before. 3) Fender American Deluxe Strat - Build and Setup I had this broken strat from 15 years ago and decided to revive it. Jonathan first removed all the paint, I torched it and finished it with Tru-Oil. He then applied copper shielding and installed all the upgrade parts. After his setup it's a best looking, playing, and sounding guitar I have! I highly recommend you to take your stringed instruments here for all types of works! read more

I recently purchased a used saxophone that seemed to be having some leak issues, but with me being a beginner, I had no idea what was really going on. I came across Wind & Brass Instrument Repair on Yelp, and based on all of the positive reviews, I knew this would be a great place to have my sax serviced. Upon arriving, I was greeted by Shawn, and after explaining my issue to him, he didn't hesitate and immediately offered to look at the sax right then and there, even though he was busy with another project. I initially planned on leaving the sax with Shawn so he could go over it and fix anything that was wrong, but he explained that he was booked out over a month and a half. Instead of handing me back my instrument and turning me away, he actually made some minor tweaks and adjustments on the spot, which fixed the issues I was having. I went to Wind and Brass for a small repair on my cornet. I had usually gone to another repair shop further away in Oakland. It turns out Sean used to work at that shop. Now he's out on his own. I enjoyed being able to view the work space, as well as instruments in the process of being repaired. A very complete looking collection of tools for his trade. A different repair shop had advised that my clarinet needed an expensive overhaul. After a back-and-forth exchange of emails with Shawn, I dropped by Wind & Brass to have him take a look. He said I did not need an overhaul, made some adjustments on the spot for a very reasonable fee, and the horn now plays smoothly. Update: have brought it back a couple times since-- Shawn further tweaked a problem key, and pointed out that because of the way this particular clarinet was made, its two main sections need to be perfectly aligned to ensure the pads seal properly. read more

I'm very glad that I chose this repair shop over other ones and I would definitely recommend it to my friends and anyone needing a repair for their instruments. Before visiting the shop, I called this shop and another repair shop in the area, but I chose this one because they told me a definite price range whereas the other one did not. When I visited, the guy at the shop quickly identified the problems with my DiZhou flute and said that its keys need to be taken out and lubricated and it would cost $50, which was much cheaper than what I had expected. Then, after 3 days, when I visited again to pick it up, he had not only lubricated the keys but also fixed two dents on my flute and fixed some pads too. His work was supposed to be worth $75 but he just charged the original quote which was $50. read more
