I called Audivex because I thought my 50+ yo wooden, Pioneer speakers needed their cones replaced or repaired. After a very lengthy conversation about why there was a bit of a hum/buzz, I was told to check my wiring that that was not a symptom of a bad cone. It was such a generously gracious conversation that I really wanted to take my business to Audivex. As it turned out, the speaker was touching an item that was vibrating because of the thrumming base notes. Seems so obvious now, but with all the scenarios posed I was able to fix the problem. How many businesses would take that kind of time trying to convince me that the problem was not with my speakers? Like I wrote above, I wish I had a reason to hire Audivex. Daniel is an absolute magician, and a true artisan. I brought him 4 drivers that had their spiders needing reglued, one of which had a voice coil completely seized and covered in superglue from a previous repair which I considered unsalvageable. The manufacturer stopped making replacement drivers many years ago and I scoured eBay to no avail. Within a couple of weeks, Daniel repaired all of them (even the unsalvageable one) as good as new. He went totally above and beyond and rather than just slapping on more glue, he realized the old glue had reacted with the powder coating and caused rust that would interfere with further glue, so he removed the cones and sanded the baskets down to bare metal before regluing. They are all installed in the cabinets and sound fantastic, and all for less than what the replacement drivers would have cost if they were still made. I can't recommend Audivex enough; this shop is a treasure and a rarity, run by a real craftsman. I'm so thankful it exists, but hope I don't have to come back anytime soon! read more

Daniel diagnosed the problems and fixed them, in a very nice manner (I mean that his fix was a high-quality one, very neatly done), for a thoroughly reasonable charge. He also gave me excellent advice about the right manner to restore them, and even tried it out in front of me in order to show how how good a job it would do. I am thrilled to have found him. In the six months that my speakers were with Daniel I never had an interaction where he wasn't some combination of rude, indifferent, or unprofessional. He also never wore a mask during COVID when I saw him. Here's my story: I had a pair of old AR-12 speakers that I wanted to get restored. I dropped them off, was told he'd be in touch. A month went by and I followed up with him - now my speakers were 'Chinese/Frankenstein' in his mind since some parts weren't original and do I really want to repair them? I say yes, he says OK, another month goes by. I follow up, now my speakers 'are pretty great' but the tweeters are bad, do I want to replace them? I say yes, he says he'll follow up. Another month goes by, I contact him again and he says he left a message w/ AR for parts and they haven't gotten back to him, he asks if I want to wait. At this point I'm pretty fed up with the experience but it's during COVID, do I really want to go back and deal w/ a maskless business? So I say sure I'll wait. More months go by, I look up the tweeters online and within a couple minutes I find genuine replacements available from Simply Speakers. I call him back and say that I found the parts and where to look. He says he'll check them out and get back in touch. Another month goes by. After a couple more weeks of trying to get in touch (his voicemail is full or he doesn't pick up) I get through again, I remind him who I am and ask if he's looked into the parts. He hasn't but he pulls them up online and sees them while I'm on the phone w/ him. I tell him that I'm OK w/ the price from Simply Speakers and could even order them and have them shipped to him for replacement. He says he'll contact me the next day. He doesn't. Finally I figure it's just never going to go anywhere so I call again, ask for the speakers to be placed by the front door, swing by and pick them up. Probably one of the worst interactions I've had w/ any business anywhere, I don't understand all the positive reviews. I never once was contacted by him, every interaction was initiated by me, and Daniel refused to give estimates/speculate on costs. I was willing to work within that given what people here had said about his work but I ended up wasting six months with nothing to show for it. I'm just glad I got the speakers back. read more

I really need to have my speakers dry cleaned but when I do I have audiovex to do it for me. The owner is a very charming and lovable person who is very knowledgeable about Dry Cleaning my speakers. I recommend him without hesitation to folks out there who are looking to maintain or rebuild their quality speakers. I notice that there is some criticism of his turnaround time with projects. My experience overall in this regard has been mixed. In several instances, where I have needed fast delivery of a set of speakers, Daniel has gone out of his way to meet short deadlines for me. When he has taken more time than usual I have found that the results were worth waiting for retrospectively. I have a pair of customized Altecs in my living room that Daniel Time aligned and rebuilt. I tried to drop off my JBL EON speaker that isn't passing audio today around 1pm for a warranty repair. The hours clearly say they're open on Wednesday-Saturday from 12-6 on the door. Met a couple there who had been waiting for over an hour for someone to show up to pickup their Cello repair. We both called the 2 phone numbers we had with no luck reaching anyone. They said they've been trying all week to reach someone. Great. I banged on the door hard several times. Clearly nobody is there. I waited about 10 minutes before I gave up as I refused to wait around when I have other commitments. Way to not even show up during your scheduled hours. Thanks for wasting my time when you told me on Thursday you'd be open on Saturday. It's not like I showed up right at noon, either. I'll go elsewhere. read more

Definitely not your average storefront, and dealing with Daniel is not like dealing with your average retailer. But I found the experience to be great. I don't know much about speakers, and when I called Audivex with a problem with one of my Boston Acoustics HD-5s, I expected to be told to throw them away (they are certainly not high end speakers). But Daniel diagnosed the problem over the phone and suggested I bring them into his shop. Turns out they needed to be re-foamed, which he did for not much more than it would cost to buy a repair kit online. He turned them around in less than a week, and everything sounded as I expected. It was a great experience, and I left thinking I'm glad a place like Audivex is around for the next time I have speaker issues. Reading the other reviews online I can see why folks might be scared to use Audivex, but my experience was very positive. read more

Daniel serviced two pairs of vintage speakers for me. The results were great and the price was fair, especially given that he has being doing repair/restoration professionally for 35+ years. I will be bringing a third pair to him for servicing in the near future. I noticed some negative reviews regarding his personality, communication and turnaround time. I had zero issues with any of these. While I wouldn't characterize Daniel as warm, fuzzy and chit chatty, I did find him to be very smart, capable and committed to doing quality work with no upsell of unnecessary servicing. I brought in a set of B&W speakers and also a Hsu Research subwoofer into Audivex to be repaired. I have never encountered customer support as bad as what I received at Audivex. The repairs took a lot longer than expected, which is OK, I guess. What isn't OK is that Audivex never called me to let me know what was happening. Ever. Not once. I had to call them continuously over a period of months to get updated. Every time I spoke to them I said that the delay was okay but to please call me if the speakers were ready or if the delay was going to be extended. Never once got a call from them. In fact, I woke up this morning and remembered that over 2 years later, I still haven't gotten the subwoofer back. So, I feel safe in saying that this is the worst customer service I have ever received. read more

I brought my Alesis monitor speaker to him about a year and a half ago. He said it was fixed once but the speaker was not fully fixed so unfortunately I had to bring the speaker back to him (since he charged $220 to get it fixed) He was very angry about bringing the speaker back and argued with me for about a hour before he finally realized that he did not fix the speaker correctly. That was a year ago now and he has not returned any of my phone calls since then. At this point it is basically theft of $220 and my speaker. I got the Better Business Bureau involved and he did not respond to them either. I would only bring equipment to this person if you are ready to lose it. read more

Despite reviews on Yelp warning of bad service, zero communication, no regular business hours and ultimately loss of equipment ... my romantic image of the Last True Artisan prevailed and I took a pair of medium-end speakers to Daniel for repair. That began a six month string of promised completion dates, accompanied by zero phone calls and a surly attitude as if my mildly expressed opinion that 6 months was a bit long was fringe and demanding. In the end, I bundled them out of the door in the rain in pieces, having paid him $100 for a partial repair. So this is another story that ends with a ping of satisfaction from venting here and in my letter to the Better Business Bureau, but not much on the listening-to-your stereo side. Is he really the Last True Artisan? How would I know?? My speakers are in pieces. I am a classically trained musician and I still don't think I would have the chops and knowledge to compare Daniel to others in his craft. Everyone has their own system for rating a business, but if I were one of these people who gave him five stars despite knowing he could barely finish a project ... well, I would want to come into the review with a lot of insider knowledge so that I could say something that compensates for the service. I would recommend Audivex if you believe that tempermental behavior and lateness are the hallmarks of a great craftsmanship or if you have a less conflict-averse personality so that you can rescue your pile of screws, cones and crossover circuit boards in 3 months rather than the 6 months it took me. read more

I took my speaker to him on Nov. 20. He said he assumed I'd like it in time for Thanksgiving. I said that would be nice, but no worries if not. He said he'd look at it in the next day or two. About a week later I called and he said he had not gotten to it yet and to check back in a week. I called on Dec.8 and he said he was working on it right then. I asked if I should call back at the end of the day or the next day and he said he would call me. Three weeks later I still had not heard from him so I called again and he said he had not gotten to it yet. At that point I just went and got my speaker back. He's extremely hard to get a hold of and never returns calls. he had my speaker for 6 weeks and still had not gotten to it even though he told me he was working on it three weeks previously. I was never rude to him and I never complained. Had he told me when I first called that it might take a month or more, I would have gone somewhere else. And when I called the last time and said I'd like to get it back he just said whatever pleases you, pal. He doesn't seem to care if his customers are happy or not. The owner took a look and said that the speakers were decent quality and worth repairing, so I went ahead and had him do the work. Very reasonable cost, made me wonder if he is charging enough, and they sound fantastic now. He saved me a bundle in not having to replace them with new speakers. Also a very nice guy. Bizarre, I just took ANOTHER pair of Dahlquist DQ-10 woofers to Dan yesterday---dropped them off at noon and came back after hitting up Lasher's Electronics for some parts I needed and having a couple slices of pizza, and picked them up ready for me at 2:00. He knew I wanted them in a hurry, and that saved me another trip to Berkeley (on AC Transit...yuck!!!) to pick them up some other day, and the quality of the work, once again, was above average, and so I decide to come here to Yelp and leave him a good review and don't even SEE my review from before, where I put in a good word for him---it's been FILTERED!!! THAT'S the "bizarre" part... Lot of good this Yelp crap does if it removes LEGITIMATE positive reviews of a business---and it kind of pisses me off, it's like Yelp (some faceless cyber-entity like all the rest of them!!!) decides, by some mumbo-jumbo techno method that MY posting is a phony, or whatever, and you know, that's BULLSHIT!!! It's calling ME dishonest---so screw YELP!!! And, it seems that the only reviews "filtered" were positive reviews, so while I understand some people's problems with the place (hey, you sometimes get what you expect, or what you ask for...right?) I have never had a problem, other than the couple times when I got there RIGHT AT NOON to expect him there with my speakers waiting for me, and I had to end up waiting a half hour for him...big deal! And, I'm short-tempered and impatient, and I've never had a problem dealing with Dan---so come on, Yelp, let the people see (and figure it into the overall rating) ALL of someone's reviews---once again, I just have to say---that's bullshit! Kinda like getting your craigslist posting blocked or flagged for NO REASON whatsoever---but who do you talk to to remedy it?!? Nobody---just another big fat "do not reply to this email" fiasco. I never write Yelp reviews but I felt like I should for Audivex. The store front is not what you would expect but Daniel was great. I came to him on a Thursday afternoon. I had a party on Saturday and needed my speakers fixed before then. Despite the quick turnaround, he said he would do his best to help me out. He did better than I could have hoped. He fixed my JBL and one of my Mackie speakers on the same day. He did a great job and was not trying to just make a quick buck. Rather than replacing a part and charging a markup on the parts, he repaired my existing parts and sent me on my way. I know very little about speakers and would likely have paid more. Having a trustworthy repair person was a great change from the norm. It seems like reviews for Audivex are either 1 star or 5. I guess I got lucky and got a 5 star performance. I still have one speaker with him that needs to be repaired and it sounds like that is where people have run into trouble in the past. However, I have absolutely no reason to doubt that it will be done quickly and well. If I ever need speakers repaired again, Audivex is the first place I'll be going. I'd highly recommend the spot. I thought the other reviews were funny for using words like artisan but I now understand what they mean. Ignore the haters, this place is awesome. read more
