Everything he told me would happen from day one to the completion of treatment was right on. I just had my quarterly appointment with my urologist, Dr Elise Perer who discovered the spot on a quarterly screen and arranged for me to see Dr Scharlach last November. My most recent exam on May 4, 2023 shows signs of a drop in the PSA value, which is significant and indicates remission. My treatments lasted about 8 minutes each morning for 45 appointments. It could not have been easier or less obtrusive. The techs, Angela and Jennifer become like sisters as I was guided through the treatment. I looked forward to seeing them each morning and Dr Scharlach every Tuesday. This is well worth looking into.

To be clear,…read moreDr. Scharlach is excellent--skilled, professional, and someone we trusted during a very serious time. But the business side of this practice is completely broken. Their billing is outsourced, and it shows. Incorrect CPT codes were submitted on our claims, which had to be corrected, and nearly two years later we are still dealing with the fallout. We have paid everything in full--and have receipts to prove it--yet their system continues to show balances as unpaid. On top of that, they continue to send duplicate bills for charges that were already paid long ago. This has turned into an ongoing administrative mess that has cost us hours of time and unnecessary stress well after treatment ended. No patient should have to keep chasing down and correcting a provider's billing errors for years. The medical care may be strong, but the billing system is disorganized, inaccurate, and deeply unreliable. If you go here, document everything and be prepared to advocate for yourself.

Also happy that the practice is thriving. They recently went through a major remodel / expansion of their office space here in West Hills. Now they have more exam rooms to provide for patient care, plus a larger waiting room. The nurses and front office staff members are universally kind and caring in our experience. Arranging appointments is easy to do. They have a patient portal for accessing medical records / testing results. Dr. Shaye provides medical expertise in a manner that makes us feel confident in his advice. Our last check up went very well and I had a spring in my step when leaving the office. Between Dr. Shaye, Dolly, and the scheduler, we were well cared for in a timely fashion, even late in the day. I barely felt the blood draw and had zero bruising. Wow! The words "care and caring" keep coming up in this review because they are absolutely the right way to describe the experience of being seen at this medical practice.

From the moment I interacted with her, she was rude, dismissive, and completely lacking in basic professionalism. When I asked a simple question, she actually called it "stupid" to my face -- something I never imagined hearing in a medical setting. At the time, I was under an incredible amount of stress, as my grandfather was battling cancer and in a very fragile condition. Unfortunately, due to what I believe was careless negligence on the part of the office -- including not properly reviewing his records -- his condition became severely worse. This is inexcusable, especially for a medical office where patient care should be the top priority. To make matters worse, after this critical situation arose, my repeated calls and voicemails went unanswered. There was no urgency, no follow-up, and no compassion shown. Lydia's attitude and the office's overall lack of responsibility made an already heartbreaking situation even more traumatic. I hope the management seriously evaluates how they handle both patient records and staff behavior, because no family should have to go through what we did. I will say that there was an elder Asian lady who was a nurse that made the experience with her kindness a bit better for us. She was very caring with her patients.

For someone who hears the words " you have cancer" world starts spinning in different way. It's…read morevery important to have a doctor who is on your side. Who is supportive and ready to answer your questions to their best knowledge. My initial doctor was brilliant Dt. Tang, REALLY BRILLIANT, who I had to mention, (he works with Leavey Cancer Center) but after my cancer went into remission my insurance company decided that I need to be with different oncologist (I'll never understand how this insurance bureaucrats work) The Oncology Institute in Northridge (which is across the Leavey Cancer Center by the way lol) is specializing in, yes- oncology. The office has 4 doctors, they all have impressive backgrounds. Dr. Paul La Porte, is my doctor, who is very knowledgeable and caring, although sometimes can comes across as little cocky like some doctors are lol, but overall knowledgeable and caring, in my experience. It is very crucial to have a good relationship and great level of comfort with your oncologist, and I believe with your doctors in general. I was very nervous when I had to (well more like forced to) change my oncologist. But after meeting Dr. La Porte, I felt that I can rest assure that I am still in good hands. The office is clean and nice. The staff is polite. You come in, sign in and wait. Chairs now are comfortably set up so people are not in each other's face, which is very important when you are already vulnerable and more susceptible to COVID virus, fu and cold, since you are immunocompromised. Check up rooms are clean and cozy, with nice art work hanging on the walls, which is a nice destruction, not letting you focus only on medical information, and trust me you have lots of that, comes with the condition. Also, what I like about Dr. La Porte is he is friendly, easy to talk to, does answer his texts and emails, if I have any questions or concerns. He does provide me with my test results ahead of my appointment time when applicable, so If I have questions I'll have time to prepare and ask. My own experience here is good, but the waiting time is what makes me give them 3 stars. I do not wish upon anyone to hear those words ever, and may you stay Blessed. But if you ever hear that, please do not loose hope, do not stop fighting, believe, stay strong and positive and with the help of great oncologists, their team, your friends and family, you are a winner. Blessings to all.

THE ONCOLOGY INSTITUTE OF HOPE AND INNOVATION is a very misleading name: they crushed every bit of…read morehope I had and they couldn't innovate well enough to determine whether or not I was their actual patient. At 8:30 AM the office officially opened and I was already caller number 26. I made two calls over two days, both with 20-minute+ on hold times -- after which I had to hang up to return to work -- and one 45 minute hold time on the third day that ended in someone answering the phone to tell me the schedulers had gone to lunch. Call back later. He was unmoved by my outrage. A friend noticed that the institute's website had a link for setting up appointments. I followed the directions, uploaded my insurance card, downloaded the app, and was given a confirmation including a date, a time, an oncologist's name (Dr. Bala Ganesh Gopurala) and even his photograph with APPOINTMENT BOOKED! in bold capital letters. A week later, I arrived for my appointment and was told (by a very indifferent receptionist who barely looked up from her computer) that I was not in the system. No appointment. Nothing. Dr. Gopurala had been at their Riverside office for months, she said. My name, my phone number, and my request for an appointment were logged into the system from my text request only, but when I asked why no one had contacted me after a week, she shrugged her shoulders. That's not an exaggeration -- she shrugged! Finally, the fuss we raised brought a compassionate doctor to the waiting room and she agreed to see me. She got the ball rolling by calling the breast cancer surgeon and reassured me that the website, the app download, and the IT department were not up to par. Ya think? After that, everything seemed to fall into place... until the institute called a couple of weeks later to say they needed to reschedule my appointment. I asked, "What appointment?" They had sent neither an email nor a text, and had not broached the subject of a follow up appointment at that point. I agreed to the reschedule, but once again I never received one email, text, nor voicemail confirmation for it. Near the end of December, City of Hope contacted me to ask why they had not been sent a referral for the radiation treatments that the oncologist had recommended. I gave the scheduler the institute's proper name, address, and the name of the oncologist who'd taken pity on me that day. City of Hope called right back to inform me that the Oncology Institute of Hope and Innovation said I was not in their system! I immediately called my primary care physician and requested another oncology referral. On January 9, 2026, OIHI called again to confirm my January 12 appointment. Fascinating! An appointment with a clinic that has twice insisted I was not in their system? I told them to delete me. I was moving on. I understand that there are a lot of people in Los Angeles. I understand that clinics are understaffed and overworked. I understand that I am NOT the only person with cancer in the San Fernando Valley community. But a modicum of professional demeanor, efficiency and competency is the least any patient deserves. The very least one can ask is for a website that has up-to-date doctors and staff on its scheduling app and an IT department that checks its website for accuracy; that assures that there's a direct connection to the scheduling department. The very least one deserves is a return call within 24 to 48 business hours. The very least one deserves is an iota of compassion from the people who schedule the appointments. After a cancer diagnosis, you are already panicked. Often terrified. One cannot help but feel that every single minute is of the essence. All this to say that if you are referred to the Oncology Institute of Hope and Innovation, BEWARE. Their behavior seems to indicate that they HOPE you'll catch on that your diagnosis is not their problem. Perhaps your poor man's health insurance makes them INNOVATE ways to get you to give up and go away. Or perhaps they simply don't give a crap -- I don't know which, but enter at your own risk. Becoming a patient at their clinic is nothing short of a crapshoot. And you might end up losing your dice.

I did a lot of research to find a hematologist for a second opinion and found Dr. Khagi. I had to wait 3 weeks to get in to see him. On the day of my appointment, his office called me while I was on my way... to cancel my appointment which made me extremely upset. I told the staff that I was still coming. I had given Dr. Khagi, medical records to review when I got there. Staff was very nice. When Dr. Khagi came into the room to meet me for the first time, he didn't want to get to know me or my history. He just started talking about the records I provided.. I was there to find out if his professional opinion was that I wouldn't get another DVT, PEs or both in the future and if I needed to go back on blood thinners as another doctor had wanted me to. He told me he didn't think I needed to be on blood thinners anymore and that was it. I did ask him a question and he made me feel stupid for even asking it. He disagreed with the previous doctor. He was with me for all of 10 minutes and that was it. I was extremely disappointed. After my visit the office sent me a survey about my visit and I was very honest and said just what I am saying here and the girl just wanted to make excuses for him and tried to get me to change my opinion. This made me even more upset. If you don't want people to be honest, don't send them a survey. When I went back and read Dr. Khagi's notes from my office visit, I noticed that he had written things that didn't occur in the office visit. He also said he was with me for 50 minutes which was absolutely not true. He was with me for 10.. 15 at the most. So, I wrote him and disagreed with him. I didn't expect any response but he did write me several times.. he actually spent more time responding to me in messages than he did in person. I thought he would run his own tests just to compare apples to apples with my other doctor but he said they weren't necessary but for a second opinion, I did expect he would want to be as completely thorough as possible given my dilemma. I won't be going back to Dr. Khagi. I've read all of these other nice reviews about Dr. Khagi like how he has a great bedside manner and how he took time with other patients but I just can't honestly say that given his attitude towards me in the office, the lack of time spent with me and in his responses to me in the portal.
