In 1 session he figured out what my issue was and was able to give me tips and solutions to target and resolve my issue. Me: I am a 31 year old active female. I am 5'6 140lbs. I play basketball 1-3x a week. I am an amateur lifter and I am a certified yoga teacher. I practice yoga 1-3x a week. I have more of an athletic build. Why did I go to him? I was having trouble squatting heavier weight +90 lbs (relative to my body weight 140 lbs)...Yet I could deadlift 150 lbs with way less trouble. I have so many wonderful things to say about training with Gary, but if I had to be brief, then these are the words that come to mind: extremely knowledgeable, professional, patient, passionate, and inspiring. To elaborate, Gary is very experienced in the fields of personal training, as well as nutrition. When I trained with him, my ultimate goals were to get stronger overall and to finally do some pull-ups, 10 to be exact. With his detailed training plan, I am very happy to say that I exceeded all of my goals. His guidance was invaluable throughout the 10 months that I trained with him, and although I am no longer a client, I incorporate everything he has taught me into my current workout routines. It is also important to note that my nutrition was very sub-par prior to training with Gary. Even though I loved working out, my poor health choices tended to cancel out some of my progress. Training with Gary allowed me to buckle down on my diet, and boy has that supplemented the progress I was previously lacking. Gary is also very professional. I was good friends with Gary prior to formally training with him, but he took every training session very seriously. He always asked how I was feeling to make sure my training session was just right (intense enough but not to the point of death lol). Although I only trained with him twice a month, he consistently checked up on how I was doing with the workout plans he prescribed and whether I had any questions. It was very easy to communicate with Gary, and he responded quickly to e-mails and text messages. And even though Gary and I are close friends, he was still very patient with me during the training sessions and throughout my entire training experience with him. He taught me new exercises and lifts, and naturally, some of them made me feel uncomfortable. For example, the previous gym he worked at installed a glute ham raise machine, which I was very excited about. However, I am extremely afraid of heights, and even though that machine was not every high at all, I still had a very difficult time performing a proper glute ham raise without a spotter. I must have wasted at least 15 minutes every single time trying to get over my fear, but in due time, I was finally able to perform one without hesitation. Additionally, I hit some plateaus a couple months into my training and even suffered a slight wrist injury while training on my own. For at least a month after, Gary modified all of my exercises that involved a lot of wrist movement and showed me ways to remedy the injury quickly. He consistently emphasized proper form and technique, and for that I am forever grateful. He teaches all his clients to never sacrifice form for higher weight. When training with him, you learn to leave your ego at home and focus on proper technique until you can add more weight. I've had a horrible experience with a different gym and with awful trainers and almost injured myself after they kept yelling at me to add weight and finish a workout in "x" amount of time. You'll never run across that problem under Gary's guidance! Lastly, Gary is truly inspirational. He is very passionate about what he does - he breathes and lives fitness and nutrition, but also knows how to have a life. In the summer of 2013, we both made a commitment to take our passion for fitness to a higher level and compete in our very first bodybuilding competitions. Because he was in much better shape than I was, he decided to compete in a competition a couple weeks away. Gary added about an additional 15 lb in one month while maintaining a very low body fat percentage. His transformation was phenomenal and truly inspiring, and I was extremely proud of him for stepping on stage in such a very short period of time. I first came to Gary with pain and problems in the neck, shoulders, lower-back, and hips. I had already been training for nearly two decades and had made every possible "newbie" mistake over the years. My source of knowledge had come from "trial & injury" and piecing together disjointed info/programs from friends, fitness publications, and websites. I had also never hired a personal trainer, because I thought my sources of "expert" knowledge were sufficient. I had also "recovered" from (worked around) past injuries. When I injured my lower back (sciatica, L4) from playing sport. I endured three months of pain in my right leg from doing simple movement (e.g. standing, sitting, turning). Like everyone else that has worked with Gary, nothing but the best to say. Easily one of the best trainers you could hope to work with. Forget about everyone at 24-hour fitness, L.A. fitness, or whatever commercial gym you go to. Gary is cheaper and leagues more. Talk to him about how he designs programs or how he interprets pain, and you will find he's one of the smartest guys in the gym (and this is coming from someone that works in a lab at Caltech). In a sea of mediocrity, Gary is extraordinary. In a little under 1 year I've lost 37 lbs while piling weight onto the bar. My deadlift skyrocketed from 385 to 500lbs - a nearly linear progression of 10lbs a month. Bench Press jumped to 260, and I'm quickly closing in on squatting to full depth. The only reason I didn't lose more weight was myself. Give him your time and commitment, and he'll get you to wherever you want to be. The most important thing, is Gary's willingness to admit if he doesn't know something, and immediately begin reading and researching. I initially sought out Gary's services because I had a cervical cancer scare. The only thing I could do personally was exercise and eat healthier to boost my immune system, said the doctor. I contacted Gary after I participated in my first Spartan Run race. At the time, I was mostly dedicated to running. I failed spectacularly on all strength based obstacles at the event. I thought of him immediately after. With that information in mind he crafted a program that allowed me to get stronger while still letting me accomplish my running-focused goals. My experience was filled with consistent PR-breaking sessions. Not just for strength but also my runs. I ran further than ever, faster than ever, and started to enjoy lifting weights. By my next Spartan Race, I successfully overcame many of the obstacles (and in a longer, more difficult race!). First off...the professionalism and demeanor . Gary just makes you feel comfortable and important as soon as you meet him. His office is immaculate:). He gets to know you and starts addressing your concerns immediately. I have a tendency to ask a lot of questions. I would ask Gary questions that were kind of off topic and after he answered them in a polite manner....then he would get back to what he was talking about. I already felt comfortable even before he did any assessments or physical manipulation. Once we got started on the manual therapy....wow! He's def got some strong hands. I could def tell that he's been doing this for a while because he found my problem areas immediately. I felt fantastic each time I left there :). I wish I lived closer to his office so I could go every week. Hmm... what to say about Gary? Have you ever trained with anyone who would not let you stop/rest until you finish all your reps or pass out in front of them? Well, Gary is the kind of coach that listens to ur body and wants you to listen to your body. If you threw up from his session once, he would make sure that it would not happen again, ever. Especially for the ladies, when you have your monthly "girlfriend" visit, going to the gym is somewhat a dreadful feeling, but Gary would modify your workout for you so that you can still get a good workout out of those "dreadful girly days." And for me, I think that's totally awesome to have a male coach that's so understanding and accommodating of the women issues :) When you train with Gary, he makes sure you stay on track, so if you sneak a cookie in your tummy, be prepared to burn twice the calories of that cookie off 'cause he's got eyes everywhere! :D read more

Gary Heshiki is by far one of the most knowledgeable and professional Certified Personal Trainers I know. He takes the time to not only listen to what your goals are but also does an overall evaluation to see how your body moves and functions. There is always a reason for the program Gary designs. It's not just about getting a "good workout" in or hitting a PR (Personal Record) on a lift. I am a Certified Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor and have struggled with overuse injuries. The best part of Gary Heshiki Fitness is the amount of catering to an individual's goals. He asked what I wanted to achieve and was able to give me the game plan to face it. I underwent the movement assessment and covered lifts that I wanted to ensure form and stability on. Bring a notebook, you will not be able to remember all the little tips and tweaks you can improve on. Gary opened my eyes to weak tendencies, but without a drill sergeant mentality. He has the patience and communication skills to coach properly. I learned how to stretch muscles that I did not know I had. My mobility and flexibility are at an all time high.
