My wife had been to Dr. Matson prior to us leaving SD - upon moving back she recommended we get physicals and that I meet with Dr. Matson. Happy to report he took the time to methodically review family and medical histories, had wonderful bedside manner, and was in no hurry whatsoever. I remember being impressed with the time he spent asking probative questions or searching his knowledge before coming to any recommendations/conclusions. Having a compassionate disposition is an absolute must for any doctor. I won't address any specific reviews below, but Dr. Matson is the epitome of what you would expect out of any medical professional of the highest order. Take a moment to read some of the literature in his office, ask him a few questions, and you'll quickly see he's one of the doctors who still really, actually cares about your health and wellbeing. Lastly, I'd like to comment on the front desk nurses. I'll admit I thought they were a bit too curt on the phone at first, but after meeting them in person it's clear they take their job and your time very seriously. I called this office asking about out of pocket prices since my insurance doesn't cover these procedures. I recently had an invasive surgery and my surgeon recommended prolotherapy. I mentioned to the receptionist that I had medi-cal. And she said they don't "deal" with anyone who has medi-cal. I asked why, and said what does it have to do with your scheduling and out of pocket prices? She said "well, if you can't afford health insurance you shouldn't be buying anything out of pocket" DISCRIMINATION MUCH?? I was totally in shock. I went to Dr. Matson yesterday 2/10/2025 for the first time. It was for chronic neck pain and cervical dystonia. I had read that Prolotherapy might help so decided to give it a try. After a long discussion, he determined it probably wouldn't help so I appreciated his honestly. He's old school which I really like. He saved me a lot of money since I'm paying out of pocket. If not for Dr. Matson I would not be alive today. 21 years ago I felt a lump in my breast and it didn't show up on a mammogram or an ultrasound. I thank Dr. Matson for sending me to a surgeon for a biopsy it was discovered I did have breast cancer. Right away he called me at home just to see how I was doing and kept an eye out for me to make sure I was being taken care of. I am never stepping foot in this practice again. Dr. And staff lack the due diligence to diagnose patients carefully and provide fair and just service. Update: what the Dr. Is referring to is Ortho 1 and their misdiagnosis of arthritis. I have a second orthopedic take new X-rays and I have no arthiritis. The Dr has told me in order to have an MRI; I first need to have cortisone shots as part of the insurance and treatment plan. My insurance require no such thing. The Dr. And his staff collude with the Ortho 1 staff and Dr. Shame on your outdated, money-hungry practice. The customer comes first, especially in healthcare. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Matson! He's a gem! My OB/GYN recommended him when I needed a primary care physician and I've been really happy with him over the last 3 years. As someone else mentioned, he takes a lot of time with new patients and even made sure that I had anything I could possibly need at home to manage my lifelong asthma. When I picked up a nasty stomach bug while traveling his nurses made sure I got in to see him before the weekend. Highly recommend. A primary care provider that doesn't want to do primary care! Dr Matson is sufficient if you have something minor like a stuffy nose but if you have anything more complex he refers you to a specialist. Needed paperwork filled out for work several times and always got an attitude from him! He would actually get mad when I would ask him. He did an EKG on me that came back abnormal but in his words "nothing he was concerned about", well a month later I had a heart attack! His office building is old and looks like something from the 50's. Dude, spend some money and remodel! Still uses paper charts, so forget about seeing anything about your care online. It is 2022 time to get with the program and use computer charting. Farms his lab work out to Lab Corp. which always took forever to post my lab results. I have to disagree with the review about the women that work for him, they were actually the one bright spot! I give them 5 stars. I actually wanted to switch doctors long ago but he was close and I could always get in to see him on fairly short notice so I continued to see him, BIG MISTAKE! My new doctor is so much better, when I told him about Dr Matson and my paperwork, his response was "but that's our job". Dr Matson believes it is the specialists job! If you have any kind of back pain Dr Matson is your guy. Aside from being a family doctor, he is an Osteopathic doctor who offers prolotherapy and prp therapy.(Thats the treatment Tiger Woods used to fix his knee) I have never had to wait more than five minutes to see him. This one star isn't for Dr. Matson but the awful woman that works in his office (who takes most of the calls). Yesterday my husband called in to see if he could get antibiotics for a bug he just can't kick. He told me he called and they wouldn't do that without seeing him. I told him I'll call and speak to them because I've had antibiotics sent to the pharmacy numerous times (with other doctors) and didn't understand why they couldn't accommodate this request. We're talking antibiotics- the standard amoxicillin they prescribe for everything (not painkillers or anything dangerous). Now this review isn't the fact that they were unwilling to save us time, money, and energy- it's about the way this woman chose to communicate with me- more, speak AT me. She gave me attitude and was nasty the entire time I spoke with her, stating she ALREADY told my husband..., that he ALREADY knows what to do..., etc. She was hostile in every way and interrupted every sentence I started. I was in shock that she spoke to people this way, especially patients who pay HER salary. Though I'm tempted to take my money elsewhere I will stay with them for now in hopes of them redeeming themselves with a formal apology for the hostile and awful treatment I've received. The Doctor is out of the office for a week but I will be contacting him upon his return to place a complaint against this woman. No one deserves to be spoken to with such hostility nor be interrupted when making a basic request for medical help- the very thing they are supposed to provide. I sincerely hope the doctor recognizes what having an employee like that can do for his practice and considers making some changes. read more

Pros: * Appointment started only 1 min late. I get the sense that they generally keep a strict schedule, which is awesome. * His staff printed out pages from http://www.mayoclinic.com relevant to my concerns. This was surprisingly helpful because I'm sure I read more since it was handed to me on paper than I would have if he'd just said "Read XYZ article on the Mayo Clinic website". * Upon my request, his staff mailed me my blood test results very quickly. * Free parking. * Short drive from my place in PB. Cons: * Patients are required to sign away the right to sue. (What a wonderful way to start off a relationship! "Here, promise you won't sue me if I hurt you.") * The faucet in the exam room was the most disgusting I've ever seen. Something seemed to be growing on it so much that I wouldn't be surprised if no water could come out... it looked plugged up. Why would a doctor tolerate that filth and unhealthiness? * He told me that he didn't care that my insurance company said that he should charge me a lower rate for preventive aspects of my visit. So, the fact that I asked about pain that I'd been having (i.e. that I couldn't tell him "I feel totally great") hiked up the cost a LOT even though most of the visit was preventive in nature, and that portion should have been covered completely by my plan. The way Dr. Matson billed me differs from the way my insurance company *said* he should have billed me, and I'm the one who suffers. That's not a very classy or caring move (and especially to then call me "dishonest" on Yelp). I was just trying to navigate the complicated world of healthcare and insurance with him, and he became abrupt and cold. * Their forms ask for lots of irrelevant sensitive info (driver license copy, mother maiden name, social security number). That's annoying and doesn't help anything. * They don't accept American Express. * They give you papers that look like they are photocopies of photocopies of photocopies from the first printer ever invented. None of his staff can just re-type it and save the document digitally and then always print out a fresh clean copy? Not a positive indicator. * UPDATE: I just got a bill 73 days (!) after my appointment. A very confusing bill with no explanations of anything that happened and why the amount I paid at the office (which was a lot) didn't cover everything. I'll pay it, but that's just plain annoying. read more

Wow, I didn't realize that we lived in a communist country where we can't voice our honest OPINION on a public form. If you read my first review you can clearly see I wasn't that upset. Just gave an honest review of how my appointment went. Now this guy is telling me that it's my fault he didn't get the paperwork into my insurance company on time? And it's my fault that they double billed me after I paid my bill? This guy obviously has no boundaries. I respect this guys choice to not treat me but I do not have to agree with it and I definitely don't respect his practice or anyone involved in his office after they hoops they make me jump through to get my bill paid. This creep sends a letter to the "Pacific Beach Business Association" saying that I'm a bad person for writing an honest review? Trying to damage my business for being honest? That doesn't make much sense to me, maybe I should write his mortgage company and tell them that he's double charging people to pay his bills and be careful in dealing with this guy. But I won't. I'll just keep my community updated on the practices of Dr Gary Matson and if he doesn't like it he can refund my $240 I spent total on my appointment and copay, and send me a gas card of $20 for the gas I wasted on driving back and forth to my bank and his office trying to get a copy of my check I sent him weeks prior that they already cashed and said they never received. But he'll probably just keep attacking me and my business because of honest reviews on public forms. This will all go away if he does the right thing and refunds me. Clean slate. I might have even considered taking down my reviews if he hadn't already sent a letter to "Discover PB". But that's a choice he'll have to live with. read more

Dr. Matson is an incredible physician. I went for my annual checkup. He found microscopic blood in my urine. He did not automatically recommend anti-biotics, but had me return in a month. At that time he found no blood. But, he sent it to a lab as opposed to relying on just his equipment (to make sure). Because of Dr. Matson, it was discovered that I had a malignant tumor in my kidney. It was against a blood vessel. I did have to have my kidney removed. But, I had no symptoms and his diligence found it! Additionally, his staff is incredibly competent and his whole office saw me through a very rough period (more complicated than just a kidney removal) for the past 8 months. It was to point out you'd have NEVER treated a male in the manner you treated me. I came to you for help concerning my gallbladder, somehow the stress in my life was all you heard. Then you "strongly" suggested I throw my kid in a "home" (what century are we in?). First of all, she's my baby. Secondly, on what planet is putting your kid "in a home" a "stress reliever"? Third, even if I'd agreed to such crappy advice, how the hell is that going to help my gallbladder? Then you seemed genuinely offended when you suggested "ugh, you won't even consider it part-time?" NO! I won't, and that's never going to fix my gallbladder. To break it down, you'd never EVER suggest a man put his kid in a home to cure their gallbladder. You were arrogant and dismissive. There's no outrageous or false allegations on my part. You were made aware of my outrage when I sent a certified letter regarding your callousness. So, defend your abhorrent "care" until pigs fly. You were a jerk to me, and I'm not "slandering" you, I'm voicing my opinion of the facts that happened to ME! An apology would go much further than your arrogant reply. Again, the denial is what's outrageous! YES, you did. The thought of "putting her in a home" (your EXACT words) had never and will never even be a remote idea for me. I did NOT bring it up. I was NOT distraught, I was in pain, you made it about my daughter. Yes, it's stressful, so what!? It's life, when asked what was going on in my life, was when my oldest child came up in conversation. How you got I was some mental case for needing a follow-up for a documented gallbladder issue, is beyond me. You failed me and traumatized me. Keep making excuses, I'd expect nothing less. Recap: I wasn't "distraught" over my daughter, I was in pain from my gallbladder. Apples/oranges. I left your office distraught because of the way I was treated. By all means, folks, go check him out, since that seems to be his main concern, vice apologizing for having zero compassion, then lying about what he said. I remember it word for word. I have to admit. Dr. Matson is a true professional and I've had a great experience so far. I've been dealing a few troubling issues with my knee/MCL and Dr. Matson was great with giving me care. I also was given Xrays, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medication. Some of which were done with a 3rd party but still, their offices made sure I was covered properly and not once did i have to pay all of these separate co payments. Their offices were very clear on all of the instructions I had to take and were right on it whenever they received anything from me. I have been a patient of Dr. Gary Matson for over 8 years, now. I have needed a Doctor who could help me with the several problems I've had from a very serious traffic accident some 15 years ago. I am handicapped, and need extra care, that can deal with my several medical problems. Dr. Gary Matson has done a wonderful job of helping me, and my various medical problems. That is why I continue to prefer him as my Primary Care Physician. I was so impressed by Dr. Matson, and his staff, that when my wife had to change insurance and physicians, I recommended Dr. Matson. She has also been very pleased with the care she receives from Dr. Matson and his staff. I don't say these things lightly, since an anesthesiologist at UCSD Hospital, used the wrong anesthesia on me, and gave me an anoxic brain injury. Dr GARY MATSON has been my primary physician for the last year. Unfortunately, I moved out of state. In the past 20 years I have had 7 different primary physicians and Dr Matson was by far the best. He listens to your concerns and does not look at his watch . The level of care from him and his medical staff is VERY professional. No long wait for scheduled appointments. Probably the best Doctor I have ever visited. I had a terrible pain in my side and after seeing a doctor in Mission Valley I went to Dr. Matson who let me know I was actually passing a kidney stone. His office staff is also very kind and caring. I hate needles and the nurse was such a sweetheart to calm me down and get me through it, after 20 mins of pep talk, of course! He is an excellent doctor, listens to what I have to say, treats me accordingly and if he feels I need to see a specialist for an illness that is out of his expertise, he will give me a referral. When I needed to see a doctor quickly, he was able to fit me in on the day I called.
