I established with Dr Smith for management of my cervical spine disease. Had a steroid epidural on 12/8 that sadly did not work. I went back for follow up with his PA Mike who said, no problem, very common, we'll repeat it ASAP and I'll submit for the authorization for that today. I gave them a week and then called to check the status. Left a message. No call back. Next two days, same thing again. Day 4 I called my insurance, they said nobody has submitted authorization for anything on your behalf. My insurance offered to call his office. They left a message. Still no call back or action. I have moved on to someone else who has the ability to follow through. They sure did bill my insurance for that visit that I got nothing out of though! Additionally I am perturbed by the onslaught of advertisements in his waiting room AND exam rooms for sexual enhancement and cosmetic treatments he offers. Perhaps his attention is too divided? It's been 4 weeks now and to this day no one from his office has returned my calls or followed through on my treatment plan. read more

I have seen a few PA's over the years and am so happy with the care I have received. The care I receive is top notch and they really care about me. I know sometimes their hands are tied by insurance parameters which makes getting treatment such as a trigger point injection difficult on the day of my appointment but that is a glitch with the insurance company, not theirs. Dr. Kevin Smith and his chief colleague, Alex Filen, P.A. truly care for their people and practice with a competence on a higher level even than other "board certified" specialists. As a person with chronic pain due to arthritis there have been seven or eight other orthopedists, neurologists, a couple of other primary care doctors who claim to specialize is helping people with tough problems, who did not measure up this high. On my first appointment with Dr. Smith he pointed out that one of the prescriptions written by a "board certified" orthopedist was causing my blood pressure to rise unreasonably high. Stopping that drug was more than worth the price of admission as they say. For the past two years or more there have been many interactions with myself and the staff at Integrated Pain. Everything has been pleasant and in tune with my needs. Remember there are a lot of people involved when you are dealing with these powerful drugs. Everyone along the line has to pay attention. I'm part of an internet circle of people who have chronic pain and who use pain management services from Great Brittan, to the U.S., to Australia. As one lady put it, "Pain that won't go away makes me cranky." That is very true and must be kept in mind when considering some of these reviews. One of the members of my group is in Tucson, AZ, where her stories of encounters with Emergency Room people and new treatment centers are just humiliating and hurtful. A very calm and peaceful environment upon entry. I was greeted with a smile and immediately put at ease with Jiana. She thanked me for getting the forms in the evening prior which cut down on the wait time for my appointment. A very short wait And I was called back by the RN Amy. Once again put at ease immediately. She smiled and was down to earth as we covered the basics and discussed our siblings (my sister came with me for support...She doesn't usually care for doctors or facilities for that matter... Just saying. I was honestly a little bit nervous she might get feisty because she can do that!) Dr Kevin Smith entered the room shortly thereafter and, noticed by my sister, had a full page of handwritten notes that she mentioned to me later...means old school...we liked that. I was very pleased with a no sugar coating honest consultation and the fact that he actually read my MRI and notes prior to the appointment...was a relief! We didn't have to spend 20 minutes talking about why I was there. He already knew. More old school stuff. Love it! This doctor looks you in the eyes when he's talking to you he discussed a few things that were not included in my referral from my spine doctor. I concluded that Dr. Kevin Smith truly wants the HELP to find the least restrictive solution for living well. I didn't get the feeling that I was just another name coming through his office. He smiles and laughs and just gives you the feeling that you are spending time with an old friend discussing the days of old sitting on the veranda with an ice cold glass of sweet tea. I was treated horribly here. Short story is I submitted a urine sample THE SAME DAY I signed a contract stating the rules of the program. I was then denied treatment based on urine test results not complying with rules of the program!! I wasn't given the chance to be successful. Major bummer. read more

Dr. Smith is a brilliant doctor. He gave me my life back after debilitating back injury. I've gone from laying flat on my back nearly 20 hours a day to having an active life. I spend about 6 hrs/day sleeping now. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers regarding the staff. Rather unfortunate there seems to be high turnover. The office currently has Tony behind the counter, not sure exactly what his title is, not the person who typically checks you in, but a great one to go to if you have questions regarding care after treatment. Very helpful regarding physical care; diet, stretching, cardio, muscle development, etc. Things the P.A. and doctor don't have time to do but extremely important. Alex, the current P.A. is fantastic - friendly and helpful. Thorough consult and examine then explaining the protocol and getting me on it as soon as possible. I see some complaints about having to do a consult before treatment begins but this is out of the office's hands. Your health insurance company requires a preliminary examine, a consult prior to treatment, approvals for the recommended protocol, (sometimes the doctor has to go to bat here for the patient fighting insurance denials, drawing the approvals out) all before treatment can begin. It's a busy office but the steps and time are worth it. Dr. Smith greats everyone kindly with a warm smile. During treatment he checks with you, asking, "How are you doing?". A very caring physician. Dr. Smith is professional, experienced, well trained, has a great bedside manner. He's on top of the latest treatments, I think in part because he enjoys what he does and still has the curiosity for learning innovative techniques. I've seen over two dozen doctors throughout California. Some were "Doctors of professional athletes", or "Doctor to the Hollywood stars" but no one compares to Dr. Smith. If you get a referral to Dr. Smith consider yourself very lucky. Follow his orders, be kind to the office staff, and be patient. read more

Was a patient for 8 years, suddenly 4 days before a procedure...I've been jumping through hoops to get to for 17yrs..I was dismissed as his patient, after contacting a liason to look into for me, it was confirmed that the GM outright lied and said I had mistreated the PA..I hadn't even had any interaction with him for 6mo prior to my last appt.. the Dr..Dr Smith, never even contacted me to ask me my side.. he believed his employee that hasn't even been working for him as long as I've been his patient... very saddened to have been mistreated this way..I had to start over again with another Dr and still haven't had the procedure.. it's been over 4mo!.. utterly disgraceful how I've been treated.. it was called patient abandonment by other medical professionals. read more

During my first appointment here back in 2019 for an evaluation, I was lucky enough to meet Dr. Smith personally, as I was referred to him by one of my doctors. Though the meeting was brief, he was nice and answered any concerns I had pertaining to the issue I had been experiencing. Fast forward to November 2020, I finally had my first treatment/procedure with Dr. Smith at Sharp Outpatient. His treatment did help, but unfortunately I began to experience new pain a few weeks later, which needed further treatment. During my follow-up, a month and a week after the procedure, I met Dr. Smith's PA Alex for the first time, who was very kind and attentive, as he was fully aware of the situation and did what he could to submit a request for another procedure to my insurance for approval. He explained to me that once they received word from my insurance, their administrative staff would reach out to me. A few weeks later, I received a letter in the mail from my insurance that the procedure had been approved. Normally, someone would have reached out to me from Integrated Pain Specialist once insurance approves, but not one call. I ended up calling their office a week after (which would make it a month later) receiving the approval letter to find out why they had not called me to schedule an appointment. Turns out, they stopped accepting my insurance and failed to notify me. They apparently were aware of this for a couple of weeks as the administrative staff member informed me of the date they stopped accepting it. Interestingly enough, my insurance approved the request in advance before they decided to cut ties. I was deeply frustrated that their administrative staff failed to inform me right away. During that call, the staff member was not genuinely apologetic and only said that they were just starting to call patients to inform them of the change. 2 weeks later after I initially called them, I surprisingly received a call from their office to tell me that they were no longer accepting my insurance. I guess they forgot I already called them and found out the bad news. I can only imagine that if I didn't call them myself to figure out what was taking so long for them to call me to schedule an appointment, I would have still been sitting around in agonizing pain wondering. Although I had a great experience with Dr. Smith, his PA Alex and the nurses, I can't say the same for their administrative staff. They definitely need to improve on communication with their patients by phone and in a timely manner. It was a huge fail on their end to wait on informing their patients of this major change, most especially in the middle of a treatment plan. read more

The office protocols cause a significant delay in obtaining an appointment. Even with an authorization number and referral in hand, a patient cannot schedule a consult until the office reverifies the auth and referral. When you eventually do get a consult appointment, you still cannot schedule the actual procedure. Again, the patient has to wait while the office reverifies what has already been generated from the referring physician and the patient's insurance company. Hard for someone dealing with debilitating pain. read more

Normally I do not write reviews. I'm making an exception here for a number of different reasons.. 1st, I've been going to Integrated Pain Specialists for several years now due to my knee basically disintegrating to bone on bone and the pain was excruciating.. IPS has been right there with me through this journey, Dr. Smith, Alex and the office staff have been amazing, supportive and more importantly their knowledge and ability to put me at ease has been second to none.. IPS's ability to diagnose and continue a treatment for me has allowed me to have a better quality of life and activity that I honestly thought wouldn't be possible. 2nd, and honestly the most important facet of my relationship with integrated Pain Specialist is that the entire staff is helpful and extremely friendly. I never feel like a burden and more importantly there is never this stigma I hear so many people speak about. When I'm there I feel like I'm their priority and my knee and my quality of life is their number one concern. Alex is amazing..!! I'll close with this, my quality of life has improved dramatically since i started going to Integrated Pain Specialists, this is undeniable.. I have been treated by a variety of pain specialists in a number of states for well over 40 years. Dr. Smith and his staff, with specific mention of PA-C Aleks Filen, have treated me superbly for the past seven years. They are well versed in all the latest technologies, and most importantly they care personally about each patient. Even when I can tell it is a busy day, I still feel like I am a main priority in their office during my appointment. They ask about my pain and my life events that frequently impact that pain. When I first came to Dr Smith I had no life because of the severity of my pain and condition. He gave me back my life. The kindness that has been extended to me by him and Alex and the rest of the staff has meant the world to me. I have a rare condition called Adhesive Arachnoiditis among many other things, I trusted Dr Smith and Had the Pain pump surgically implanted. Its amazing.....There is NO reason to live in severe pain or on the couch drugged out all the time. I was an athlete my whole life and to not be able to even drive my car was devastating. If I could give less I would. My mom has debilitating back pain and was referred by her primary care physician. I tried for 2 weeks to make an appointment. I called several times and my calls were NEVER returned by the clerk who sets up the new patients. When I spoke to the front desk staff I was given a bunch of excuses like "She's out to lunch and will call you as soon as she gets back" and "The doctor is out of town so call us if you don't hear from us by next week". I'm now in the process of changing her referral to another specialist. Waste of time. read more

I had 3 surgeries on a bucket tear in my meniscus in 1999. Stem cell was worth every penny I paid. I am able to walk and work today because of Dr. Kevin Smith. I tore my meniscus again last year. I had constant pain, not able to ambulate and sometimes had to use crutches. He really cares about his patients. You will get quality results under his care. Dr. Smith is an AMAZING doctor in his ability to address and treat pain. However, HIS OFFICE STAFF IS TERRIBLE!!!. They CONTINUOUSLY screw up with scheduling and not accurately notifying the patients of their appointments. After my initial appointment, I tried calling for three weeks to schedule a treatment appointment. No one returned my calls. I even left messages for every extension on their phone. After complaining to my insurance company, I received a call from Integrated Pain Specialists (IPS), and they got me right in for my procedure. A few weeks later, I received a call from the hospital asking if I am on my way. I was confused as I didn't have an appointment of any sorts. I learned that IPS had scheduled another procedure, but failed to let me know. I was able to make that appointment, but shared my frustration with the hospital nurses; they indicated that they receive A LOT of complaints regarding IPS and their poor scheduling practices (these are nurses that do not work for IPS). My latest appointment was rescheduled from later next week to today at 8:30 AM. After sitting in traffic for one hour, I was told by the IPS staff that my appointment was at 11:30 AM, and that I would have to come back. Again, no one would take responsibility, and shrug if off as "its not their fault". What happened to personal responsibility in today's generation??? Needless to say, I am frustrated. On one hand, Dr. Smith is a GREAT physician, but HIS STAFF NEEDS TO GO!!! read more

By far this has to be the most unprofessional medical office I have ever dealt with! I had my first initial appointment on July 6, 2018 awaiting for their referral coordinator to submit my MRI approval with my PPO insurance company. Still to date they're staff member has NOT completed a simply task and was told she had to take personal time off causing me to receive ZERO follow up's after contacting their office on a weekly bases. Almost a month later I was told today it was still pending with no full explanation other than their office was short staffed. Clearly they're interest isn't the patient now causing me to seek a new PROFESSIONAL provider that will be able to treat me for the much needed medical attention and treatment. On my last note... First time visit to Dr. Kevin Smith, and I was impressed with his quiet soft spoken manner and good listening skills. Using a model of the spine in his office, he took the time to show me where my pain was originating from and worked out a plan for helping me with relieving this pain.
