Gary's cabinets We lost our home in the Tubbs Fire and we're referred to Gary's cabinets by a good friend. Ernie (owner) started by meeting with us at his shop to go through "Cabinets 101." Although I had worked building cabinets for many years, I learned quite a bit from his presentation. Ernie asks pertinent questions on almost all aspects of the things people are looking for. His queries streamlined the process and helped guide our decisions. I think he goes through the process as much to help himself as to help his clients. No surprises make for a happy customer. They did our kitchen, utility/laundry room, pantry, 3 bathrooms, and a hall linen cabinet. There were some areas we had to work through, but when all is said and done, we are very satisfied. The cabinets are exactly what we wanted and the install is great. They finished up the job by doing a final run through making sure everything was in order. Their installer Shane is a wizard when it comes to installing and finishing. I recommend and would use them again. read more

I typically do not post online reviews, but the remarkable workmanship, attention to detail, and peerless customer service we received from Ernie and his team at Gary's Cabinets compels me to make this exception. Starting with Ernie's initial visit to our house, we knew we were in exceptionally good hands on a project that included full remodels of our kitchen and bathrooms. He spent quite a long time measuring our unusual layout and offering ideas and options based on our real-world use of the spaces, then continued to hear us out and adapt the particulars as he laid out our custom design. The quote was extremely reasonable, especially given the amount of cabinetry and additional panels involved, and Ernie repeatedly adapted to our evolving choices. And the work itself was all drop-dead gorgeous: perfect fits in our very imperfect, uneven old house, with precise lines, a solid feeling of quality, and beautiful finishes and woodgrain matches. Ernie's stated priority is to deliver a product that truly works for his clients and the way they live, and that's exactly what he did for us. As a result, we now have a stunning chef's kitchen that accommodates all our own idiosyncrasies and eccentricities, and bathrooms with "floating" vanities that visually and practically define those remodeled rooms and give us joy every day. I should note that our great experience with Gary's Cabinets followed two false starts with other companies, one with a big box home store and the other with a renowned local kitchen and bath remodeling specialist. The first would have provided us with standardized cookie-cutter cabinets that would never have fit quite right or worked quite right for us. The second would have used higher-quality but still mass-produced cabinets and a design that was more about the contractor's tastes and preferences than ours. By working with Ernie, we instead ended up with surprisingly affordable custom cabinets and storage solutions that anticipate needs we initially hadn't even identified. Ernie was invaluable in helping us remodel our kitchen. He made several visits to our home and had us visit his shop to see how the manufacturing process worked. Unlike the home improvement departments in the big box stores, Ernie actually listens to what the customer wants! Ernie is also a chef so he knows the best kitchen layouts for people who like to cook. Our cabinets and pantry doors arrived when our contractor needed them and the workmanship was beautiful. Very bad experience with Ernie Cocco of Gary's Cabinets... I wanted to get custom made cabinets for my home. I went over my ideas and asked for an itemized estimate for the kitchen and 2 bathrooms. He asked for a $7,000.00 deposit for an estimated $20,000.00 worth of cabinets. One month later, I went to Gary's Cabinets to finalize my order. I asked again for an itemized estimate so that I could make a decision based on cost as to whether I wanted additional features or not. He again said he would NOT itemize out the estimate because it would take too much time, instead he will only give me a total per room. At this point, no decision had been made and nothing had been ordered. I went to Home Depot and talked to Lynn in the design center. I asked her if she could itemize out my estimate. She said "of course, not only will I , but I have to"! At this point, I decided to go with Lynn at Home Depot in Ukiah. I called my contractor the next day and told him I had decided to not use Gary's cabinets. He informed Ernie emeditaly. The following week, I called Ernie and asked if I could stop by and pick up my deposit. He said "what makes you think you are getting your deposit back? I have NO intention of giving you anything back!" Ernie kept my $7,000.00 deposit even though I have contacted and emailed him numerous times, he is now forcing me to take him to small claims court to retrieve my hard earned money. I had previously purchased doors from Gary's too. I was told that the door would cost $2,000.00 but when the bill arrived it was $3,000.00 because of a slight change in glass design. I believe that this price was extremely exaggerated like the rest of his open ended estimates. This should have been my warning about why he would not want to itemize my cabinet quote. I have filed a Small Claims case against Ernie Cocco and Gary Massutte. All I was asking for was an itemized estimate. If that would have been provided, I would have their cabinets in my house today! read more

We ordered our kitchen cabinets from Gary's on a recommendation from a local contractor, and found them beautiful, solid and exactly what we wanted. The contractor says he likes Gary's cabinets the best as they're made with thicker material, allowing them to support heavy weights (such as said contractor when he stands on lower cabinets for installation). Ernie of Gary's dropped by our house several times for consultation, measuring and dropping off some additional materials to finish things up. Ernie was also knowledgable and patient with our questions (this is our first kitchen). Even though their factory had to close during the Lakeport evacuations this summer, Gary's still came through for us. The price was fair and lower than even Home Depot's sale prices. We like supporting local businesses, and can heartily recommend Gary's cabinets. read more

The overall product is marginally satisfactory but you need to be very careful with their tacked-on charges. Get a written estimate with everything. They will play a homeowner off against the general contractor, claiming authorization from the latter for charges. So make it 100% clear that all charges are to be authorized by owner only. On factory doors that a customer wants stained, they will charge $500 for this work, claiming it takes 6 hours at $70/hour shop time to put on two coats. They will make up excuses for late delivery. My otherwise nicely finished door had a thumb print. Careful, careful, careful. The customer is never right - only Gary's is. read more

Our contractor, Willie Pell, referred us to Gary's Cabinets. Since we had been looking at high end kitchen showrooms in San Francisco, we had our doubts about whether Gary's Cabinets could match the quality and look. But we sent our information to Ernie at Gary's Cabinets anyway, for an estimate. Not only was Ernie's knowledge impressive, their pricing was so competitive that we decided to make the trip to Lakeport (approx. 2.5 hours north of SF) to meet in person and see their wood working shop. It turns out that they are the "real deal". We provided Ernie with pictures of our dream kitchen, measurements and our "wish list". Within days, he gave us drawings and suggestions regarding the design. His ideas were very insightful and useful....things we would not have thought about had he not raised them. We decided to go with Gary's Cabinets based on personalized services (e.g., Gary calling us to validate some of the details when Ernie was away), quick turnaround, competitive pricing and quality of the products. We could not be happier with the results. Our custom cabinets are spectacular; we are talking about dovetailed drawers, walnut interiors, special details, etc. The turnaround time was quick and the attention to detail was very impressive. We are very, very happy with the results, thanks to our outstanding general contractor Willie Pell for the referral. It is challenging to summarize; but perhaps one of the best ways to summarize is that most people who come to our place think that we got Christopher Peacock cabinets except we paid one-third of the price! For those of you who are in San Francisco and don't want to pay San Francisco prices; we would highly recommend Gary's Cabinets.
