There's just not ABC Liquor or Party Source in Boston, so what is a lush like me to do? Hop scotch from one place and one state to the other looking for the selection and prices. UNTIL I found this place. I think I could live with Gary's and Macy's and make out okay. Yeah, I think so. Great selection and prices, hard to say it's the best on everything all the time but it hits it well on the important stuff and that's all you can hope for. I typically only write reviews for restaurants and not stores, but had to write a review for Gary's. The selection at Gary's is amazing and well organized. Easy to go in and out or really explore what you most desire before you get tipsy. Their prices cannot be beat either. I always find the cheapest price here for any type of alcohol. If you are a complete wino, you will love Gary's. They always have ridiculous wine sales - and we're not just talking a couple of crappy random brands that they are trying to get rid of, either. The entire front of the store is usually filled with huge displays of a ton of different wine sales. Add in the generally low prices and the fact that there is a JP Licks just next door, and Gary's is basically a girl's best friend. :) read more

it's kind of far from where i live, but i definitely stop by gary's if i'm in the area. AMAZING wine selection! i mean...AMAZINGGGG prices on wine are ridiculously low. i got a bottle of sonoma cutrer for $20 and a bottle of veuve for $35. what a steal!! not a huge variety of hard liquors, especially flavored vodkas and stuff like that, but everything they do have is fairly priced. i'm a big fan! read more

We go to Gary's a few times a year to stock up on our favorite wine and liquor. You cannot beat their prices. I'm not sure what to make of the comments about rude employees as we've never encountered that, so its a bit surprising to read. We've always been able to find help when needed and had courteous check out folks (especially the lovely gentleman today). Gary's Liquors is my favorite liquor store. The wine selection is extensive. Beer selection is very good. Never knew all the different types of liquors! Prices are competitive. The store was renovated over the last year and a new deli area has been created. Looking forward to trying some of the food and hopefully raising the rating to 5 stars in the near future. If the Wine Gallery is where I go for that bottle of wine for a special occasion, Gary's is where I go to stock up for winter, or the Super Bowl, or for a random weeknight. They can always be counted on to be selling 3 bottles/$10 or 2 for $10 if you want to mix and match of decent, drinkable wines like Yellowtail, Black Swan, Funky Llama. The rest of the wine selection covers all the major regions and even has a few unique bottles here and there. The beer selection is awesome; Harpoon Leviathan, Dogfish Head Palo Santo, Sam Adams specialty packs, big bottles of cider and even Lindemanns for the wimp in you. The liquor section of complete and has pretty much the best prices I've seen around. And now the deli? Heaven. Sometimes, even when I'm not looking to buy anything, I sometimes like to just come and visit all the alcohol. read more

This is one of the best inventoried liquor stores in the region. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. And it's prices are usually lower than the bigger discounters. (I recently returned from a vacation in Mexico and noticed that Gary had several brands of spirits priced lower than the 'duty-free' store in the airport in Cancun.) The store is located in the Chestnut Hill Village shopping center (the one with Bertucci's and CVS) and has a Chestnut Hill mailing address. Technically, the shopping center is within the city limits of Boston's West Roxbury neighborhood -- which the tax collector knows even if the post office doesn't. Gary's is always neat, organized and well lighted. There is a good selection of cold beer in the chiller which covers the rear wall of the store. At the front of the store, against the store windows, are several low racks of promotional glassware, T-shirts and other merchandise provided by the various brands. Gary sells these items for a few dollars. For example, I acquired a set of bar glasses with heavy bases and engraved with the Chivas logo for a dollar each; and a set of Mexican hand-made tequila shot glasses with the Corazon name for 50-cents each. read more

Prices are great... you know you getting a good price but the people are iffy --- It is not at all a "friendly" place to shop - and you are lucky if you get a kind response when asking for tips on wine etc... Avoid this place. I shop there often. I usually buy Guinness for my boyfriend. I bought 2 cases as I usually do and the price was the same no problem. I went home opened up the case and notice the bottle size is now 11.2 ounces instead of the 12 ounces it usually is. If I am getting less why am I paying the same?? I called Gary's and asked to speak with the manager who was extremely rude. He proceeded to tell me it's been like that for years which was incorrect as I just bought the same amount (2 cases) about a month ago. He said he didn't care and he was not going to lower his price. A simple acknowledgment and empathy would go a long way. They lost a good customer. They could care less about losing 1 or 2 customers because they have plenty more patronizing this establishment. I would go further pay more to be treated better. Gary's needs to understand their customers. read more

Pros: Gary's refurbished the old store, and it looks pretty damn good now. Very good selection of beers, and a decent selection of wine and liquor. Cons: The prices are good, but hardly great. The "Gary's Discounts" aren't really any better than you'll find at other competitive liquor stores, so don't be fooled by the so-called retail price comparisons. Many of the wines on the lower to middle price rung tend to be generic in nature, you won't find anything exciting or adventuresome from this store. Don't return your recyclable cans or bottles there, they couldn't be any less friendly or restrictive. The deli is a good idea, but not so good in terms of execution. They'd learn a lot if they ran over to Marty's. Marty's understands food, and especially food that is complimentary to wine and beer consumption. read more

I agree with the other reviews that mention the RUDE treatment of customers. I asked for clarification about the total price of a purchase, and 1st got ignored. When I spoke up again ( a little louder the 2nd time, but nothing close to a yell), I got a nasty tone in reply. The cashier went out of his way to be sarcastic, with the seeming support of the owner/manager standing by. Unnecessary to say the least. Their prices on microbrews are definitely NOT the best locally. Macy's is almost always a little cheaper. Gary's does have the best selection of low-end wine, tho, so if you like cheap wine (yuck) then this is your place. They also have a decent deli counter. read more

I came to Gary's at the recommendation of my brother in law and I have not been let down. The staff has always been helpful and I find that have much better prices than my Brookline Village/Coolidge Corner liquor stores. I have gravitated to their excellent selection of liquors and I am thoroughly impressed by their selections of beers and wine. There is not a better liquor store in the WORLD!!! Best selection, best prices, fabulous family owned and run business. They are so nice, friendly, and dedicated. They are extremely knowledgable, always giving superb recommendations! The deli is amazing! You must try their potato salad! But everything is great, the burgers, chicken wings, soups, chicken salad, high quality deli, and they do catering and pre-holiday dinners and sides!You must go often as they always feature new and exciting deals and steals and limited edition items. No one beats their prices. Don't be fooled by some of the large nearby warehouses like BJ's, they are not cheaper! Unreal wine selection, single malt scotches, liquor, beer and gourmet foods. I don't drink, but if I did this would be the place I would go. I go here because the best part of Gary's is they have a deli hidden in the back. Not just a place that has prepackaged (Boars Head) meats but a place that makes their own corned beef, turkey, roast beef, chopped liver, knishes, chicken and tuna salad, soups and daily lunch and dinner specials. They also have fresh breads for their sandwichs they make and a small gourmet section and assorted local cookies. read more

The place looks nice, their selection is above average for beer and extensive for wine and spirits. But the service isn't good at all. If you are lucky you might get a thank you from their cashiers. Service is something I value and I'll just go out of my way to go to Blanchards even though Gary's is only a block from my house. Now that I live in San Francisco, a half hour out of Napa, I would assume that when I come home to the east coast I'll be paying more for Napa wines, but I'll be damned if Gary doesn't beat most liquor stores in SF for wine prices. This is the best place! I live right nearby, and they were really good BEFORE the big renovation -- but now Gary's has a deli (expensive, but sometimes handy), as well as much more space. Since the renovation Gary's has been great. Very clean store, and very friendly and helpful staff. I can say that with a fair amount of certainty because I've needed the staff's help almost every time I've come into Gary's... ...which is my one major complaint; finding what you're looking for is a bit of a challenge. I'm a beer-drinker and love finding new craft beers but when I come in looking for something specific I often have to search out someone on staff to ask where it is. They're always helpful and if they have what I'm looking for, they can find it quickly but I don't think a staff-level knowledge of the layout should be necessary for booze-wrangling. I'm not a wino, but judging by the sheer volume of available bottles (and my difficulty finding the SPECIFIC right wine when I'm running errands for the folks) I think it's safe to say that Gary's selection is extensive. I've heard high-praise for the deli, but haven't tried it myself yet. read more
