Traveled to Vienna for a day trip about a week ago, and the overall experience was great. I came here to try traditional Wienerschnitzel to complete my Vienna experience, and I couldn't have chosen a better place. The place itself was very nice, with great looking tables, but the service was my absolute favorite part. I got sat down at a table even though they were fully booked and had reservations, but since I was alone it worked out. Very grateful to the server Simon who was very attentive, and we shared a good conversation. Thanks to Simon, I got to complete my Vienna experience with a great meal! Delicious meal! We had a reservation for 8 pm and we knew that would be too late since we were hungry so we popped in at 5:30 to see if they could squeeze us in for dinner. Sure enough they found space for us and we were really lucky. I had boiled beef, noodles and broth which was very delicious. So many restaurants I have this on the menu that I finally tried it and I was glad I did. Fabulous! Then for dessert we had the fluffy caramelized pancakes and plum/ raisin sauce. So so so delicious. This is a great little spot in the heart of Vienna. They were able to seat us even though we didn't have a reservation. I had been craving wurst and this place did a great job satisfying that craving. My wife got venison and it tasted nice, and the dumplings that came with her meal was amazing. The food was truly amazing. I couldn't believe that the food was so good. We took the specials, the steamed salmon and the wild boar gulasch. The fish was tender and cooked just right. The chanterelle mushrooms were very tasty and yummy. The gulasch was an epiphany, very savory and tasty and left us wanting more even though we were already full. The others had Kümmelbraten, pork with sauerkraut which was cooked very well. Great beer. Great service. Wonderful seating area outside. read more

I ate at this restaurant earlier today and I'm in my hotel room reeling after throwing it all back up tonight. My stomach isn't felt this bad after a meal in a long time. To start, this place is a meat place, and I made the mistake of thinking it would be ok if I just ordered a vegetarian meal. The meal I ordered ended up being pasta with egg and cheese. It was a lot and I don't know why I ate it. Something wasn't fresh. Either the egg or the cheese. Whatever it is, it sent my stomach on a turvy that has me regretting big time. When I'm showing people around the historic old center of Vienna, and we want to eat typical Viennese food, Gasthaus zu den drei Hacken is one of my go-to places. This old and traditional Gasthaus counted such luminaries as Franz Schubert, Moritz von Schwind, and Johann Nestroy among its regulars (Stammgäste) and the walls tell their story. I especially like the Franz Schubert room which is a perfect place for a large party to eat. And the food is very good too. Especially tasty for me here is the Schwammerl (mushroom) soup. It is maybe the best I've ever eaten in Vienna. A leafy green salad and Geröstete Knödel mit Ei und Speck were also very well done. A few splashes of tabasco sauce added a little zest to the flavors. Gasthaus zu den drei Hacken lays claim to be Vienna's oldest tavern operating for 350 years. If you've ever been to Peter Luger's in Brooklyn, NY this place carries that same ambiance of old school charm. It's a very small restaurant with a dining area to the right as you enter and a cramped bar area on your left. They serve up traditional fare so be prepared for lots of offal offerings. I opted for the roast pork and potato dumpling, also ordered a goat cheese and pumpkin seed salad, served along with a nice cold beer. The salad was absolutely fantastic and the goat cheese was much different than I would have expected being velvety soft rather than chunky. The roast pork was a simply executed dish, no frills along with the dumpling. Actually, I've never had a potato dumpling before and man was that boring. I couldn't actually bring myself to eat the entire ball since it was tasteless. Regardless, the service was fast, polite, and a good dining experience. read more

I want to give this five stars... and maybe I should give it five stars... because after living in Vienna for six months and eating out at least once a day... I had my single best meal in Austria, here. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is because by the time I ate here I was worn down to the nub by certain Austrian culinary limitations and over indulgences... and so my meal at Gasthaus zu den drie Hacken (Inn of the three Axes) bowled me over with it's more discrete and restrained traditional cuisine. But if I had eaten here on my first night in Wein, I am sure I would have offered four big stars, but no more. That said, my meal here was welcome, delicious, amazing, and totally memorable. It is a small restaurant, over 300 years old, located near Vienna's gallery district... so we saw art, for hours, before we came here... and it was a great combo. First off, the menu offers Austrian traditional fare, which to me makes perfect sense, as a traveler who wants to taste the very best of the local cuisine. But this is not your average Viennese Ratskeller chow, now your high end hotel French influenced Habsburg court banquet feast. It offers instead good, upper middle class Viennese Sunday food, totally Austrian, and totally good. Most of the meals still hold that hearty Germanic heaviness, with lots of offal being offered, large portions, plenty of beer and wine, and huge plates of sweets to finish off. I ordered not one but two main courses... the schnitzel, which is a common dish in Vienna, and the stewed kidneys, which is a little more special. Both dishes were excellent (although I have had equally well prepared veal schnitzel in many other places in Austria and Hungary... but never as good a plate of kidneys outside of France. But what made my meal so amazing were the accompaniments. I had a huge Semmel Knoodle (bread dumpling) in a savory gravy... as well as a taste of my companions Kartoffel Knoodle (potato dumpling) in a slightly vinegary sweeter dark sauce. There was also a heavy bread served with butter and liver pate, sauerkraut and sweet and sour red cabbage, white asparagus, and very tasty salad to start, with lots of vegetables in it (some pickled). And of course I had to begin my meal with a bowl of creamed soup (yum) which I ordered in spite of the delicious looking goulash suppe which many of the other tables seemed to have. I drank many huge steins of Czech Beer, which my companion drank a bottle of the more traditional Austrian wine, Grunner Veltner. We ended the meal with schnapps, coffee, and some great desserts. My companion Mimi had a traditional Sacher Torte (deep chocolate cake first created at the Sacher Hotel about a hundred years ago, and in court battles over the actual inventor ever since), and I had a huge sweet dessert Knockrel ( a large fluffy sweet dumpling covered in thick vanilla sauce). We had heard good things about this place and decided to give it a try. It seemed to fit what we like: not in the main tourist area but an easy walk from our hotel and a nice, traditional interior and an appealing menu. Well...we were disappointed. I ordered the roast pork with dumpling and sauerkraut but was served a beef dish instead. This was pretty quickly fixed, and that wasn't a big deal. But my roast pork was not fall-apart pork like its supposed to be. It was pretty tough and chewy. My hubby had the goulash, and he said it was tasty but also not as tender as it should have been. Came here at the suggestion of friends who live in Vienna. We had requested that they pick a restaurant that serves authentically Austrian food. I guess we were thinking Wienerschnitzel and the like, rather than Chinese or Italian. They picked this place, whose name roughly translates to "The Three Hatchets." It's very antique and picturesque; multiple small and intimate rooms decorated with pictures of various emperors and their wives. I ordered Zweibel Rostbraten: a steak covered with sautéed onions. I guess they ran short of onions suitable for sautéing. My steak was covered with the kind of deep fried onion rings you get at any Outback! Definitely not "echt." Someone at the table ordered the roasted marrow bone. Yuck. The other dishes were OK, but more important, the company was great and it was a very pleasant evening. A nice place within walking distance of our hotel, but not first tier. read more

For an authentic Austrian cuisine experience in Vienna, Gasthaus is a good destination for both locals and tourists. The guy working behind the counter at the Vienna Pass booth gave us the worst advice on tourist activities. But he did come through on one thing - recommending that we dine at Gasthaus. Needless to say, we were doubtful of his recommendation after nearly following through on his other questionable suggestions, but we were glad we at least followed through on this one. The restaurant is about a good 5-7 minute walk from St Michael's and is easily identifiable by the green and white awning and exterior. At least that's how we were told to identify it since the guy at the Vienna Pass booth couldn't even tell us the name. We weren't exactly greeted with open arms when we entered and were left standing awkwardly for a good 5 minutes before we were acknowledged by one of the waiters who finally stopped to talk to us. The interior is slightly rustic and it was pretty clear that we were the only tourists at the restaurant. Everyone seemed like locals enjoying dinner and drinks with colleagues after work. Thankfully there was an English menu. The beef soup was tasty and the boiled beef rump entree was good as well. The potato with the boiled beef was especially good. The waiter also recommended one of the finest glasses of Austrian Riesling I have ever tasted. We also had the good fortune of having one of the patrons hand us a nearly full bottle of Wiener Gemischter Satz that they did not want to go to waste. Also fantastic. We were pleased with our experience and would recommend it to other tourists seeking a less touristy and authentic Austrian dining experience. read more

My wife and I stumbled across the street from our apartment into this restaurant late at night without reservation. They were nice enough to set us up with a nice table. Traditional Austrian dishes as expect and we enjoyed our meal there very much. Will be back for sure. Very crowded so you will need a reservation in advance. After visiting a few countries in Central Europe I have to say that Gashaus Hacken had my favorite meal of the entire trip. The outdoor seating was very pleasant in a garden like atmosphere that reminds you of a standard Italian restaurant. I had the beef goulash which had probably been cooking for half a day, most tender beef I've ever had. We also tried the roast pork that was swimming in sauce and served with a large side of sauerkraut unlike any we have had before. Both of our meals were served with knodel and it was quite good. Gasthaus was relatively easy to find although it is tucked away a bit more than other nearby places. It was an incredible meal. read more

I'm amazed that more people weren't at this lovely place for lunch. I found it off a rick Stevens recommendation, and I'm glad I came. It was nice, so I was able to sit outside and the waiters were very prompt. I did peak inside and it's very intimate, with 2 or so smaller rooms, which I appreciate. I got the meatloaf and mashed potatoes- very well done and the broth/ sauce that went with it was absolutely delicious!! For dessert, I got the apple strudel which came out hot and fresh, something I'm glad I got. Last minute find in Vienna, about a 10 min walk from our hotel not too far from St Stephens. Split the special pumpkin soup, beef tartare, green salad w/goat cheese and the Weiner Schnitzel. Started w/1 beer each then split a bottle of the House red wine. Everything we had was so good but the soup stands out. Our waiter, Max, was so patient (& funny) as we don't speak German. Yesterday we were 4 for lunch at Zu den Drei Hacken. It will be a restaurant to avoid. Such was our disappointment. The pan fried fish (Char) was like pudding as if the cook had not had the time to do it properly, for the steak he seemed to have had too much time because it was over cooked and the sauteed onions were black and the veal escallop looked as if it had been fried without much interest in the process. In 30 years of living in Austria, I met my first apple strudel that was unrecognizable. The service was neither polite nor friendly. Just disinterested. The waiter had to be requested two or three times before he would grace us with attention. It was not a busy time in the restaurant. Also he could have done with a shave and a clean/pressed shirt. A bit of beaten path, still very close to St. Stephen's Cathedral. I opted for outdoor seating, it was a very nice evening. Beer and food (schafskasse salad and goulash) were very good.
