BEWARE CAROLINA GARAGE SERVICE! My older garage door was…read morerotten and after one of the springs broke, I decided it was time to replace the door and upgrade the curb appeal of my home. After interviewing 4 garage door companies, I selected Carolina Garage Service based on their price (3 of the 4 companies sold the same exact garage door) and seemingly stellar online reviews. This was even after the "estimator" blew off my initial appointment and the owner Spencer Kempton called to reschedule for the next morning. I ordered a 8'x7' Doorlink 431 insulated garage door with Stockton windows for the top panel and add decorative spear hardware. The techs were also to replace the existing track and spring but retain my newer opener for $950. I paid a 50% deposit via Cash App on Wednesday and the work was to commence on Thursday. On Thursday, the installers arrived at my house at 11:00 am and proceeded to start disassembly of my existing garage door. While we were going over the job, one of the installers remarked that if I wanted the "upgraded garage door rollers", they would install them for an additional $80. I pushed back since that wasn't what was discussed and, through my interactions with the other garage door installers, I learned that the "upgraded" rollers were the standard rollers that came with the door. At that moment, I should have thrown them off the property and called the cops. When they unloaded the new door, I noticed that it didn't appear to be the correct model (it was stamped 430, which is a non-insulated door) and did not have the insulation requested. After they called the owner Spencer Kempton, they said that he ordered the wrong parts but they would supply an insulation kit. Spencer would later say this was the fault of the distributor Southern Ideal Door. About an hour into the tear down, they asked to borrow tools to remove the existing door (another bad sign) and then about an hour after that, they left to retrieve different tracks and springs. Mind you, they removed my entire garage door and left the job site with my entire house and garage exposed. I ended up sitting on my front porch for the next hour while I waited for them to return; watching over my stuff. The techs eventually returned with different tracks - this time too short and attempted to install them anyway. After 3 panels were "up" and the track only partially installed, they started to wrap up, vowing to return the next morning to finish. With only 3 panels up, my garage was still open to the elements and potential thieves. After convincing them to screw in one of the old panels to the wall to provide some look of a garage door, they left. Friday morning came and so did the excuses as to why they weren't coming Friday - maybe Monday. They claimed that they needed "angle iron" from their distributor. Angle Iron (the metal bits that the garage motor and track are suspended by) is available at every hardware store for about $15 for 6'. At this point, figuring that it was highly likely that they would not show on Monday either, I messaged the owner Spencer Kempton and his installers telling them that they can pick up the door pieces left at my house on Monday, refund my $475 deposit via Cash App, and they were fired. A couple hours later, I spoke with the owner Spencer Kempton who proceeded to offer me a $75 discount, then offered to send someone else, and then another discount but no refund. He stated that the door could not be returned and that I could have someone else come and finish the job. I declined all offers as the installers took most of the door parts with them and this wasn't the door I had ordered anyway (it wasn't insulated). At some point our conversation, he also admitted that he is living in California, attempting to start another garage door company there and that his installers had not installed a garage door like this before. He was attempting to guide them via the phone but simply, they were incompetent. At this point, I have an incorrect partial garage door, the wrong sized track, not all of the parts, and have now hired another installer to start the entire job again for another $1000+. We had the same exact issue happen 8 months later. We called on Memorial Day holiday as our garage would not close, it would just come back up. The only good thing from this, is we received a call shortly after we left a message and set up an appointment for the next evening. Spencer, did not come out this time and sent out a guy who was not competent to do the work. He clearly did not know what he was doing, and even called up Spencer while he was there to see what he should check out. They said it was our logic board that needed replacing, and it would cost $350.00. Well we decided to wait, and paid them the $40 fee to come out and check things out. My husband decided to look up this information, and after reviewing multiple websites, he was not satisfied that the other guy that came out knew what he was doing as he did not check out multiple items that should have been checked out (at least according to these websites). We however, decided to go with their expertise, and bought the logic board ourselves. $80.00, and they wanted to charge us $350.00? That means they wanted to make $270.00 for a 15 minute job, which is $1,080.00 per hour. Dang, I'm in the wrong business! At any rate, our logic board was quickly received, my husband switched it out with no problem in 15 minutes, but it did not help or do anything with the issue. I called Spencer up on Saturday to schedule him to come back out, not his bad helper, which he agreed to come out on Wednesday evening. After thinking about it, we decided we did not want to go with someone we could not trust. Someone who could not properly diagnose an issue and then wanted to charge us an absurd amount. We called someone out who could come out on Sunday with no extra charge, no charge to diagnose or let us know what is going on, and was simply amazing! I cancelled with Spencer and e-mailed him stating he should really not cash my $40 check or at least reimburse me for it if he already had. The response back was that it is for inspecting and not just diagnosing, they do their best to diagnose. Well obviously his worker doesn't know how to inspect or diagnose, and the proper business thing would be to waive it this time. He called me up at my work number and wanted to explain how it was inspecting and travel fee. Whatever it is, it is absurd and we should have not been charged for the fact that you cost us for sending some guy who is young and inexperienced. He also mentioned that the $350.00 was just an estimate, he didn't know what garage type I had or how much the logic board would be. Okay, in that case, say I will return with your quote, rather than it is going to be $350.00 to repair. I was not going to argue with him while I was at work, so I hung up on him. But there was never an apology, just an excuse for everything. Luckily, we are not out $350, we are only out $120 ($80 for the part and $40 for their fee to check things out). There is no trust anymore in Carolina Garage Service to properly do things and do it at a reasonable charge. I will be glad to refer you to someone who will not charge to figure out what is going on, will charge you the proper amount, and has a great business personality to deal with. You've been warned!

When a different company didn't show up to help me by 10:00 p.m., I called A Plus Garage Doors. Jimmy answered. He said they were open 24 hours a day but only came out at night only if it was an emergency. I asked, "What is an emergency?" He said, "Are you trapped?" I said, "Yes, we are trapped and I need to get my husband to a radiation appointment in the morning." Jimmy came right then and got the door up so I could get my car out. I was able to take my husband for his radiation treatment on Friday morning. He didn't charge me extra for coming out during the night. Then Jimmy came back on Saturday morning and replaced the springs on my Wayne Dalton door with a conversion kit made especially for it. The 10 rollers needed to be changed, too.
