I'm giving Gateway 4 stars because I didn't have any issues and I would come back again! I came from 1:30-3:30 on a Sunday and it wasn't crowded at all. Skates + entry was $16! Theres no music (other reviews mention that you have to pay) but there is a cute little photo machine that's free. The photos aren't the best quality but I don't mind. I definitely think that Gateway could upgrade this place a little more, which is why I can't give them five stars. I came a couple years ago, and since then nothing had changed. Everything's pretty old and outdated, from the vending machines to the skates to the bathrooms. Lighting is pretty dark when you enter. There are also no walkers for those who are new to ice skating and need a little help! Other than that, staff was super friendly! I struggled on the wall the whole time, but it was still a great experience. read more

This place has continued to go downhill for years with no signs of improvement or even the willingness to improve the structure of the building despite having an absolute monopoly over the hockey, figure skating and ice rink related recreation in the area. The ice and sticktime sessions fees are ridiculously high- for that crappy, run down facility. I said in my previous review that this place has so much potential- and yet..... Everyone could give this guy the worst rating possible and he wouldn't change a thing. Why would he? He has no competition. read more

The place could use some revamping with paint or decor or something it just seems so old. We thought it would be a fun time to take our 8 and 9 year old skating, I think they would have had a better time with the assisting walkers, for the price you'd think they'd have those available. We were told people weren't using them like they were suppose to do they ruined it for everyone. I think as a business they should still supply them for kids. Saw a kid about 7 hit his head and everyone is holding on to the edge trying not to fall. It would be a better experience for kids with the assisting walkers. Been trying to teach my teen how to skate so we've come here a few times in the last few weeks. As far as having a warehouse of frozen water and generic skates for you to rent, this place does deliver as advertised. But that's literally all you're going to get for $16 ($9 for 2 hours & $7 to rent skates), which is the cost of 1 hour of your life if you have to work minimum wage. They have a sad snack bar that is cash only. It's not always open. They have a "warm" room that's always freezing, never has snacks, and never has TVs on. When we went on a Wednesday night, the lights weren't even turned on. The bathrooms are down a dark hallway. Absolutely no music will be played unless someone spends money on the jukebox. If you are there to practice skating and burn some calories, you'll get what you want. But the gym is $10 a month and this place wants $16 for 2 hours and they don't even pretend to try and provide entertainment. It's kind of insulting, like they don't even think we're worth lying to. It's just mostly sad because this place could be so cool. I wish they would sell it to someone who might actually care about giving the Fresno community a unique experience. read more

I miss Icelandia. Gateway is just alright. Every game machine is turned off. No vending machines. No snack bar. No hot chocolate. No water bottles, just fountains. They say no outside food but I saw plenty of people eating their own food in the warning room. Back entrance of the warming room is blocked off. No tvs going. No ice shop, or at least not an open ice shop. All the lights were off in the back where the bathrooms are. The rink is fine, albeit warehouse feels. I don't get it. This place could make a killing. Maybe it does with figure skating and hockey? Who knows. That would explain how they stay in business. What I do know is that public skate amenities are terrible. Even the hours are terrible. The skates aren't bad but some are missing D-ring eyelets and the skate laces are frayed or ripped, so they're too short. Not safe. read more

I've never really ice skated before, but I wanted to try it. I thought it would be an experience -- spoiler alert, it was a bad one. I knew I was going to struggle a bit on the ice, but it really didn't help that some other patrons there pushed me around and ridiculed me for not being able to skate without gripping onto the ledge. And that's not necessarily the business's fault, although when I alerted the front desk they said "sorry to hear that, would you like to enroll in one of our classes" ... Long story short, this place is for people who already know how to skate and if you can't, you're going to be ridiculed and humiliated. I like this place a lot and every time I've gone it's been super fun. The people that work there are really nice for the most part. The rink is a pretty decent size and you can even have private parties if you wanted to. I always go during the public sessions though. I'm pretty sure it's only $10 if you decide to go ice skating and rent ice skates, which is a fair price because you can skate for hours--which we most definitely always do. As a heads up in case you've never gone ice-skating, I would recommend bringing long socks that are pretty thick so that the ice skates don't bother your leg; bringing a warm jacket, gloves, and a scarf is also recommended. I like the music that they play while your ice skating...just thought i'd mention that. Also, the people that work there do a good job at making sure no one does anything that might get them hurt. However, this can result in them taking away some of your fun. For instance, you can't hold hands with more than one person because they think you might crash into other people or what not. However, there's one benefit to getting hurt ...this benefit is that a cute guy will usually offer to help pick you up ;) Also, I think it's the only ice skating place close to this area--I may be wrong. read more

We have a family tradition to go ice skating every year at Christmas time. The past two years we were pleasantly surprised by the warm and friendly worker, and he was there this year. He is a tall blonde boy who helped my daughter tie her skates and then helped her when she fell. I noticed his picture on the wall. I told my 9-year-old it must be because he's a good worker. In previous years the workers seemed bothered when we had questions. It's nice to see the turnaround and that he is still there. We plan to go more often during the year. read more

The boyfriend and I decided to take our nieces out for the day and they wanted to go ice skating. Apparently this is the only ice rink in town so we didn't have much of a choice. The place looks like it hasn't changed it's decor for the last 20 years. Everything is outdated and falling apart but I guess for less than $15 a person including rental you can't ask for much. The rink itself was cleaner than expected by the looks of the exterior. Not a bad place for a couple hours of fun but they really should consider revamping the place. The so called "snack bar" was out of service so if you get hungry you'll have to settle for whatever you can get out of the vending machines. read more

This is a jewel in Fresno. The people that work here are really nice. My son has played hockey here for three years, all because a rink guard came up to me and said, "your son is a great skater, get him into hockey!" Now I'm from the Northeast and hockey is really popular over there, I just wasn't thinking about it much. We are so happy he goes. I can't say enough that this place is absolutely horrible.yes thank god we have ice rink in fresno but it's the most dirty,dark,depressing place for kids and adults.You have to buy music?! Seriously? Any radio station is free that you can play.light are always off.we use flashlight to find things in our bags or the lockers!No locker or changing room.I personally change my kids in my car.I see people using the toilet rooms witch that's another story.so disgusting.I told Jeff the owner bit seems like he doesn't care at all?! Great place for a family night. The employees are extremely friendly. Members of the employed "safety team" are always on the ice and immediately skate up to any person who falls on the ice to make sure they are alright. They seem to take that job very seriously, which is great when you have multiple kids of various skill levels you are trying to keep an eye on at the rink. I came here today with my 16-year-old daughter, my 29-yearold niece, and her little 3-year old boy. It cost the same for the little guy, no I'm sorry, 1 dollar less. He was so excited but upon stepping on the ice, he instantly fell and developed a nasty bruise on his face. My niece paid 23 dollars for the 2 of them. She asked for a refund, as they were only on the ice for a minute before this happened, but was told they could not give her a refund and that there was no reason that she could not continue to skate. Who was going to watch her 3-year old? Ultimately, she was offered 2 passes. The manager was not very friendly about the whole ordeal and did not even ask how her little boy was. I have been bringing my daughter now for about 2 months every weekend. She loves it here but the customer service is the worst I have experienced. So sad! read more

I came in to ask a question about bringing a group of 20 people, person up front said he couldn't hell me, and the manager was currently on the ice. The management team should be MORTIFIED at themselves for turning away a girl in a wheelchair WHO, LITERALLY A YEAR AGO, was able to go out on the ice in her chair! Now i had to miss out on a friend's birthday party because others like to judge people on disabilities! The "manager" JEFF BLAIR needs to review the American with Disabilities Act of 1990 again because THERE IS NO GROUNDS FOR GATEWAY ICE CENTER TO DISCRIMINATE... EVER!! The manager made me sit in the lobby during a birthday party on the ice because i am in a wheelchair. Yet, a year earlier when the cameras were running he let me on the ice in my chair for a photo opportunity with the the Monsters Hockey Team. They are only supportive of disability rights when someone is looking. This time, he left me in tears, alone in the lobby. read more

This was our first time visiting this skating rink so we did not know what to expect. We came here for a Frozen Themed bday party, so we were excited. Ummm, yeah it's freezing in there so bring pants, a long sleeve shirt, a sweater & maybe some gloves to help keep your hands warm. Once we arrived, the ppl who were going to skate were told to take off their shoes, put them in a bucket & pick their ice skating shoes. The attendants issuing the skates were 2 teenage boys who could not issue correct skates if their life depended on it! We asked for a 4 in girls & we got wrong sizes (a 4 & a 5), then went back for a 4, & was given a 4 in men's sizes, then went back again & finally got the right size, REALLY! This is your job for 4 hrs, haven't you gotten that down yet? The rink seemed to be under some type of construction because the doors that led to the rink had only 2 openings so skaters can enter & exit the rink. The rest of the area surrounding the rink was blocked off with wooden planks. The ppl trying to get onto the rink were crashing into ppl who were trying to get out. A complete mess of ppl falling and stumbling in that small area. I give it 3 stars only because my daughter had fun, otherwise it could have been lower. read more

I was visiting family and wanted to take them somewhere fun. First time ice-skating and we all had a blast! Above all, the staff was so courteous and helpful (a big plus for me). Definitely recommend it for a family activity. The only thing I would suggest iwould be to bring cold weather clothing. .. it is very cold! I've been going here for years and I love it, but the last time I was here was very frustrating. There were young boys in hockey gear playing tag among the other skaters, zipping in and out and then sliding on their knees on to the ice. The professional ice skaters were standing all around the rink in the way of other skaters, skating around the edges, zipping around the pubic and one girl in particular almost ran into me on three different occasions. There were teenagers laying on the ice and clustering near the exits. A couple of boys were speed skating around everyone. One of the boys almost got me and later on I saw him slam into a girl from behind. We left early because I started to really worry about someone hitting me and that I would get seriously hurt. read more

Gateway Ice Rink is AMAZING! Absolutely love it! My first time skating was in third grade, I found my the love of my life there, and every time I go it's like a little Winter Wonderland that takes me away from my stress. The only problem is the fact that you will find stupid people there. You see people throwing a fit about 75 cents, complain that they received the wrong shoe size when the employees know better about how ice skates fit their feet, and that the hot chocolate is too hot! People are just too arrogant. The employees can't give refunds and when the customers hear this they act like they were just told to kill their first child! But like I said, other than the "mouth breathers" this place is gold. Jeff, Garrett, and Tyler are the best. If you make them your friends, they'll take good care of you. Thanks guys! I went to Gateway Ice Center not knowing what to expect as it was my family's first time ice skating. The manager took the time to tie each of my 3 kids skates saying they would have a better time if their skates were tighter. After they skated for a while they were given free skating lesson coupons to come back and skate in a class. The staff there was very friendly and I (usually being a cynic and reading some of the other reviews) was pleasantly surprised. I have been ice skating all my life, and grew up in Michigan where people love to ice skate. I was so excited to learn that there is a rink here in the Valley. When I got there I couldn't get appropriate skates because they only had women's figure skates. How stupid do you have to be to think that hockey skates are for men and figure skates are for women? Hockey skates are for hockey and figure skates are for figure skating. They offered me women's skates but women's skates are made for women's feet. The ankles are shaped differently. Playing around with a misshapen skate is a great way to break an ankle or fall and hurt yourself. When I asked for my money back since I wasn't going to get to skate, they refused. Gateway made my sweet little sister sit in the lobby alone during her friends birthday party, violating ADA law like it was NBD. When confronted about it, the general manager was rude to my parents, and, not willing to obey the law, finally stormed off in a temper tantrum to sit in his office alone in the dark. Wow. read more

Center is nice and clean but their snack bar needs some MAJOR attention. We showed up with 7 kids and most of their vending machines were broken and the snack bar only had nachos. I asked if they would order pizza for and we would pay an additional fee but they refused. The young kid workers were just like "Huh sorry. We're working on improving it." read more

In an update, after several months, I did receive a refund along with some passes. I am happy, my daughters were enjoying themselves before the incident. I will try again, but stay away from the vending machines. I do hope this incident helps their staff to be prepared for an emergency and be more sensitive to children. read more

Terrible terrible terrible. It was my first experience I had no idea and I expressed my concerns but they said they have staff on site that may help. I was on ice less than a minute that I fell and bump my head so bad that I started crying a lady approached me and asked if I feel ok. I was in sever pain but I said I'm fine I just want to leave. I then I asked my son and husband to leave too as I find this sport pretty dangerous especially for little ones with no helmet . After I walked out finally the staff!!! Came to me and gave me some ice in a ripped plastic bag which was dripping all over me. They didn't give me any refound and they showed no sympathy. When I went back to talk to the lady who first approched me when I fell, the manager was chasing me and intrupted me asking what are you doing here?!!!! they have the worst, meanest customer service ever. They have this non refundable policy as I am sure they have so many unsatisfied customers. It's like I paid 35$(for 3 of us) to get my head bumped in less a minute . They take their time to hung posters on wall about skate at your own risk but they have no brochure or instructors for beginners. read more

This rink is horrible on the weekends. A lot of people skate in whatever direction they want to skate. Teenagers race each other and knock over little kids. The skate guards don't tell anyone to slow down or direct skaters to skate in the same direction. In fact, the skate guards are also skating wherever they want to skate and race their friends. The skate guards don't even help some people up. I saw a skate guard (his name is Larry) racing his friends and he skated right by a kid who fell. He didn't stop to help him up. Do not take your kids here. It is dangerous and it will be a bad experience. read more
