I wish there were a way I was able to give no stars at all or just give the company a 0. 2 years ago, we signed up for my son to take swimming classes at the John Adams high school in Queens but covid happened. My son was only able to get 2 classes. I paid $231.00 and the covid happen. We were asked to fill out forms and return it. But some people like myself were needed more at work especially if you worked in healthcare. I eventually filled out the form and explained why I couldn't summit the forms on time. But I was given a run around all the time. And no one was ever able to give any information on what was going on. So, I never received a call or a refund fr4om these people. They are a rip off. They just take your money. Worst service ever. read more

If I can give them 5 star negative, definitely I will!!! I strongly suggest DO NOT go . They said because about the policy I only can make up class for once. I lost 3 swimming classes and 1 tennis class for both of them now. Totally 8 classes!!!!! All because of the policy. I feel so bad. You guys will lost your clients. My two kids have swimming and tennis classes here. They just playing in the water alone and playing tennis alone in the class. My daughter is level 5 and my son is beginner 2 . When I was signed contract they never said I only can book one mack up for each class . And last year never happened like this. so disappointed, and waste my money. If I can give a NEGATIVE star, I would definitely give a -5! On the first day when registration opened, I registered my child for one of their Friday night swimming classes. At that time, there were still a few spots available. When class started in September, they realized they overbooked that class. And after the second class, a lady from the office called me (yes, they picked my child) to switch to another class. (I wonder if they had called another parent and the other parent said no.) They told me that I can either put my child in a later session or go to a different location. I was furious. At the end of the conversation, I just asked for a refund. She said "no refund". Really?! So she wants my child to switch to another class or location when they overbooked the class and when I don't want to and ask for a refund, they wouldn't refund me the money? And the best part was that the lady cursed at me on the phone. And she was telling one of the people working in that office that she had to deal with this bullshit. Wow - how do you respond to that if you were me?! Also, if your child is not feeling well and can't make it to class, you must present a doctor's note in order to make up that class. Hmm.. what if I didn't take my child to see the doctor because she has a cold. Well, too bad! Money down the drain... read more

I signed up for swimming. My older children had a good experience because of their dedicated instructor. My younger child was put in a group with a swim instructor who was bored out of his mind and seemed to not even like children. He spent most of the class asking the manager "How much longer? How much longer?" He spent most of the time telling them to jump in the pool over and over again and not actually teaching them how to swim. I complained to the manager that a lot of time was being wasted. She barely looked at me. She must have said something to the teacher at the end because as I was drying my child off, he started calling across the pool to me "Everyone always complains, so miserable!" I emailed their office to inquire about getting a different instructor for my little ones. My big kids wanted to continue, but they do not respond to emails. read more

Horrible experience! We were told that we had to wait till my daughter was 4 and then she would be in a class with a similar age group/level and that there were no more than 5 kids to 1 instructor. We arrived for her first lesson and the kids in her lane were all over 5 and there were at least 7 in the lane with a very young instructor. There were at least 2 kids crying and my daughter wouldn't even get in the pool. Completely disorganized and unsafe we would never go back here...especially since they are refusing to fully refund us or give us a credit to a future class. Really terrible customer service. If your child doesn't already know how to swim, do NOT bring them here. If this is a first swim class for your child...skip it! What a joke! read more

My family has been coming to gateway swimming in douglaston for 3 sessions now. We started our child here in beginner one and my wife and I in adult beginner one. You're paired with an instructor for each class with never more than 6 students. ALL the instructors are great, and as far as we can tell all have racing experience. You're not just learning comfort in the water, you're learning efficiency too! The programs for the children are structured with two beginner levels and 7 additional levels to teach all the essentials. By the time your kid has gone through the program (each level has 10 classes), they will definitely be swim team ready. Our son loves it and has been counting down the weeks until that is a reality! The adult classes are largely driven by the student's desire to learn. There is plenty of downtime to watch the instructors and watch your classmates take turns one by one, giving you the chance to get comfortable with the motions before having to do them yourself! The first sessions are paired swimming: you have a kickboard and an instructor holding the board the whole time. As you get more comfortable, they start taking away the board for some exercises and gradually give you drills on your own. By the time you're in beginner 2, as an adult, you spend much more time independently in the water with the instructors giving verbal feedback as you take on laps. All the teachers are SUPER encouraging, but with plenty of advice to offer. We came to the program unable to put our face in the water... Let alone tread water in deep pools. After beginner 2 we now swim full laps of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and even butterfly. If you're willing to learn, you can keep up the lessons to refine your technique! Douglaston's pool at the ICC has plenty of parking, a full locker room, showers (about half usable) and a gorgeous pool. I believe it is 25 yards long, stretching from 4.5 feet deep at the beginner end and sinking to 10.5 feet at the beginner 2 end. There are plenty of lanes so it never feels crowded, and tons of lifeguards on hand so it always feels safe. The deep pool also means that a standard part of every lesson, beginner included, is diving. You learn everything from simply dipping in to deep water to racing dives. This is by far the scariest and most stressful part of the classes, but have faith, their methods produce great results!! We now are comfortable with racing dives and are looking forward to next steps! Big thanks to gateway for giving our kid a sport to be excited about and a super fun exercise and life skill for my wife and I. Triathlons are a reality now!! Definitely recommended! read more

We joined Gateway for my older's swimming in the summer of 2018. Our experience was good until COVID hits. For the entire winternsession of 2019, we paid for classes for two of my kids, but the pool needs to be repaired so there were no classes for the entire winter. Then we asked if we can sign up for spring sessions, I forgot I paid for the winter sessions and didn't use up those credits yet. So I paid for both winter 2018 and spring 2019. COVID was here in Spring of 2019, with that being said, pool is closed. I reached out more than 10 times through call and email, even Instagram messengee. Received only 1 response in April 2021. Their excuses not being able to process the refund is due to limited staff. So limited staff means you still have staff. With morenthan a year of time, they should be able to go through all the files and process my refunds. I'm a single mom, I need those money to sign my kids up for other activities. read more

Please Please if you care about your child do not place your child here for swimming classes. Swimming instructors are just kids and they do not know what they are doing. My child almost drowned and had to go to the Emergency. Also, I tried to work with the staff itself and they are very rude. They need new management. Whomever manages the department should be let go. They offer so many services but who wants to register and pay when you have to deal with just pure immature management. Once again, there are many other places that will treat you and your family with the utmost respect and they will treat your kids with care. We've been going to Bayside for 3 sessions now and my son Olivier likes this location, the kids are cool and the gym quite nice. The instructors are well versed in basketball and good with the kids. Olivier has made a couple of friends at while playing basketball here. The parking is plentiful in front of the school and Bayside high school is easy to get to with the GCP east to exit 21 and then to exit 6a. read more

I would definitely NOT recommend anyone to sign up with Gateway sports & pools as they have a very inflexible membership policy. I had my two boys attending their swimming sessions about 1 year ago and they had always been members since 2017-2018. Since my boys were having issue with asthma and due to unforeseen circumstances,I had not continue their swimming sessions. This year I figure they are doing better, I decided to enroll them back for more swimming sessions. My wife enrolled them and was told to pay another membership fee of $45 each with a total of $90. Today I called the office and spoke to Nicole, I explained to her the situation and she refused to honor the unreasonable $90 additional membership for both boys. First of all, if my two boys were previous members, why do they need to pay the membership twice? They are already in their system!! I asked Nicole to honor the credits toward any future swimming sessions, she just mentioned there is NOTHING she can do. I asked for her manger or supervisor, she also refused to give out her boss's information. I told her to i would like to request and cancel the swimming sessions if the $90 cannot be waived or credited. She indicated that yes the swimming sessions can be refunded but not the membership fee. How fair is that if I do not want my children to join the membership nor the swimming classes anymore and I still need to pay for the membership? Their policy stinks and it needs to be changed due to some exceptions or unforeseen circumstances. Gateway sports, you need to be flexible! Gateway sports, you need to do your business right or you are losing all your customers. I would NOT do any business with you nor I would recommend any of my friend's children to go there. read more

We went to their Douglaston location at the ICC. If your child is remotely afraid of water, do not send them here. It's traumatizing for them to say the least. The instructors are young and immature and do not think twice about tossing your child into the pool even if they are afraid and are screaming "No!" We spent 2 semesters here and with the freezing water, my son did not learn a thing. Now we're at Saftswim and within 2 months, my son has no fear and is jumping in the pool w/o hesitation! The instructors here are better equipped to deal with small kids. read more
