I adjusted my first review from 5/8/24 because we received a response from Dr. Leon showing that he cares to resolve our uneasy initial visit. His message is much appreciated and we look forward to having a better follow up with him in a few weeks. 5/8/24 It was our first visit to Viva Pet Care and let me start by saying the Vet Techs were very kind, caring and provided exceptional service to our puppy. If this review were based solely on them I'd gladly give 5 stars. Unfortunately, the 3 stars is because we were a little thrown off by Dr. Leon. First, there was no introduction when he entered the room - he just went straight to business. Not one smile during our entire interaction either. I'm a bubbly person so that felt a bit cold to me. We've only had our puppy for 1 month and some comments came off judgmental or as if we should've known better. We were taken aback because our puppy has been (what we thought!) so good, loving and smart since we got him. He hasn't shown aggression to our family or our next door neighbors. He's been to a couple T-Ball practices and games, has sat with other moms and their kids with no problems at all. My husband was surprised as well because he walks our pup daily to our kids' bus stop, passing multiple aggressively barking dogs, and he just strolls along and doesn't lunge or bark back. When he growled and jumped at Dr. Leon while he was trying to check his ears we just thought he was anxious and already agitated from having something stuck up his butt! I guess we were wrong? Idk. He seemed ok with the vet techs. We're going to work on ramping up his exposure, apparently he's way under socialized. We're looking into obedience training, also not so subtly suggested, but we are open to regardless because we also want to better understand our dog and properly train him. We do appreciate that Dr. Leon is thorough and I trust his information. We just had a hard time with his brash/off putting tone towards us. We feel hesitant and uneasy about our follow up in 3 weeks. However, we want to follow through for our puppy. It wasn't the best first impression and we're debating if we will continue going there after the follow up visit.

Our old vet, Dr. Brian Behrends, recommended Viva and Dr. Leon. We agree! Have been taking our cats here a few times now, got great care! The vet techs, Dr. Leon, Dr. Danielle Behrends and the front desk manager, all cool! Dr. Dennis Leon earned his veterinary degree from Cornell University. Besides being a vet in California and Manhattan, he also was medical director at Levittown Animal Hospital. Dr. Leon taught veterinary students when the Cornell University Hospital for Animals selected him as the Robert W. Kirk DVM Practitioner-in-Residence. He's way experienced! In 2014, Dr. Leon completed the requirements for becoming a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (one of only four in Portland) via the Canine Rehabilitation Institute. If you were a client at Montavilla Animal Hospital, you'll be very happy to learn that Dr. Brian Behrends's daughter has become a vet, and is now working.... at Viva! Danielle Behrends was excellent as a tech at Montavilla Hospital, it's so cool that she got much of her vet training while working there with her family! Visit their website for all the info, this is a great animal clinic!

This place is wonderful. The people are great and so sweet to my dog. She has quite a few health problems so they know her well and she loves them. I like that the office is simple and clean, but at the same time fun and welcoming. The veterinarians are professional and Dr. Leon has been especially knowledgeable about the medications my dog is on, and/or may need for whatever ailment she is being seen for. We drive in from Washington to go to Viva, because we love the care my dog receives, their team and their fair prices.

If I could NEGATIVE stars I would. PLEASE READ MY SAD STORY! My healthy, robust Standard Poodle Riley died 2 weeks after receiving the Leptospirosis vaccine pushed by Dr. Behrends. He had never had it before (he was 8), it was not needed and I had never even heard of it! It was never suggested by prior vets. But she used scare tactics ("it can be passed to humans"). So I trusted her and said yes. I was told nothing of the dangers. This is a disease that is 100% treatable with antibiotics. RIley became very ill just 3 days after the vaccine. I tried desperately to save him, taking him back to her right away, doing blood work, urine analysis, x-rays, then an ultra sound at Dove Lewis. He was in kidney failure. She still refuses to admit any negligence and failed to inform me of the dangers associated with this vaccine. I have asked her to supply the side effects of this drug - she has provided nothing. She even charged me for the final bloodwork the day before we euthanized!! Talk about heartless. I needed to be positive I was making the right decision - he had not eaten in a week. In addition, she failed to diagnose a simple foxtail in the paw of my other dog. She is inept and incompetent. I would stay away from her and her "wellness plan" which she also will promote when you visit her. I am now $2,000 poorer, have lost time at work and worst of all - am heartbroken no longer having my beloved Riley. My female Trixie was bonded with him and she is grieving too. We are devastated, she shows no compassion and I doubt she even learned a lesson from from this. Both times I talked to her on the phone she insisted over and over again she did everything correctly and reassured me "you did everything you could do". She was just covering her ass. In my opinion - she is young, inexperienced and does not know what she is doing. I am sure she will be pushing this vaccine again today. STAY AWAY and do your research before allowing greedy vets to inject toxic poisons into your sweet pets for simple profit. I have already obtained my current pet's records and will find a new vet. I would never go back to this woman. I am posting my story everywhere to try to spread awareness. This is happening too often. Too many pets are dying. I know this now, if only I had known this 2 weeks ago we would be at the park again today with Riley.

Alberta Veterinary has been my vet since I relocated to Portland three years ago. They've done a…read moreterrific job keeping my eldery Bichon alive and thriving. I couldn't be happier with their care. I'm a bit amazed by those reviews that claim higher prices than expected. For example, Ashtyn C didn't get a written quote for "teeth cleaning?" Really? Does this person have any idea what can be involved with any kind of dental work for a dog? It's likely to include general anaesthesia if it's a serious cleaning. And was it "just a cleaning?" Somehow I doubt that. By the way, a mouth is a mouth. It doesn't matter if your dog is a chihuahua or a great dane, the same costs apply. In fact, chihuahuas are prone to serious and difficult dental issues due to their small mouths and tiny jaws. I've never even had a Chihuahua as an animal companion and even I know that. There's a lot about Ashtyn C's review that doesn't pass the smell test -- including his ignorance about dogs and how veterinary services are priced and shared with consumers. Didn't like the price? Then don't sign the consent form for care. I have never been provided with a significant service by Alberta Veterinary without knowing -- up front -- how much every aspect of that service would cost or likely cost and the low and high limit of the possible bill. I suppose I should give them "special credit for this," but this is standard procedure for ALL VETS. Like every other vet -- primary care or emergency -- they ITEMIZE the quote for you, providing low and high parameters and the time period for which that quote is VALID. They will then go over every aspect of service that you have questions on. I have always been given the opportunity to decide what was an essential part of the service being planned. I have always known what the service would cost. I have never been "surprised" by them. And, let's see, Hi C claimed that staff tackled and laid on top of his dog? Now, why would that be? Why would they be afraid? What exact behavior was your dog exhibiting? Was it a danger to the staff? One would assume so. Dogs can be dangerous. And Hi C was right there and didn't stop them and say, "Let us leave and plan to come back later. Maybe he needs to be sedated." I'm sure that if Hi C had expressed those concerns and sentiments, they would have accommodated their requiest. Hi C's probably the kind of dog owner who doesn't understand why they're supposed to pick up their dog's crap when out on a walk. No doubt, the world revolves around Hi C's sense of entitlement. Newsflash: my dog visits Alberta Veterinary at least once a month for a tech visit. He has never left traumatized. Then again, he's well behaved and well socialized. Maybe Hi C needs to be a little less "Hi" and a little more sensible about the behavior of their pet. Too many people these days don't use their heads, don't plan ahead, or don't plan at all. Or they blame others for their own shortcomings like not training and managing their animal companions well. Vet care is expensive. I'm low-income myself and sympathize with anyone struggling to afford vet care and sometimes having to make painful choices about what care is essential, what is crucial to my dog's quality of life, and what I can afford. If you're a pet owner who can't financially manage "surprises," then make sure you're not "surprised." Get a written quote, look into financing options, and/or see about accessing care for low-income pet owners through charitable organizations. Alberta Vet has never advertised itself as a "low cost" or "charity care" vet clinic so don't expect them to behave as one. Regardless, I have always found their costs for service highly competitive, if not fairly low. Moreover, they've ALWAYS provided me a written estimate up front for any significant care before getting my approval to procede. That includes the cost of a simple exam, a vet tech visit for monthly services, to surgery. They also do a very good job ensuring security for all patients and being aware when some patients are "reactive." That includes asking other people and their pets to vacate common areas when a reactive and potentially dangrous animal is going to be coming through.

TL;DR - Our dog was misdiagnosed by one of the doctors at Brooklyn Yard, which led to a cancerous tumor growing for months. It was not responsive to any kind of treatment by the time she was properly diagnosed, and my sweet girl has since passed. I discovered a new lump on my dog in early December, and the doctor did a fine needle aspiration. Instead of sending it to a pathologist, she assumed it was a lipoma given my dog's history and the fact she couldn't see any "cellular activity." This led countless back and forth visits to Brooklyn Yard, and their urgent care, Spruce, along with thousands spent in testing and imaging. For months, they led us in circles, insistent it wasn't cancer, despite my poor girl presenting so many symptoms that I now know are common for mast cell tumors. All it took to properly diagnose my dog was another fine needle aspiration, which a specialist sent to a pathologist. This is what Brooklyn Yard should have done to begin with. By this point, though, her tumor was too large and complex for surgery, and treatments like palladia and chemo were not effective. Also, when Brooklyn Yard first received the updated medical records and diagnosis from our specialist, their team called us, not to apologize or offer support, but to tell me they were canceling my dog's upcoming dental cleaning. They have yet to reach out since her passing last month. I am absolutely devastated and can't help but think how different things could have been if we hadn't put so much trust in the doctors at Brooklyn Yard. I miss my girl so much and will never be able to trust another animal in their care.
