We went to Gatsby for the first time last night. We went for the Christmas themed bar. The decorations were festive and the drinks were good. There were fun added touches to the drinks including smoke bubbles, unique glasses and some pyrotechnics. Unfortunately the experience was tainted when the bill came around. There was a $30 per person food and drink minimum that was not made clear. It's not stated on the menu, and it was not mentioned to us by our server. It's in the fine print on the bottom of their website. Our server should have mentioned the minimum when she asked us if we wanted another round. Had we known, we would have ordered another drink instead of paying $30 for nothing. The Gatsby is completely booked out for the Christmas season so enforcing a $30 per person food and drink minimum feels highly unnecessary to maintain their business. The combination of slow service (it was over 10 minutes of us sitting at the table before being served while the servers walked past our table multiple times without acknowledging us and didn't give us water until after we had ordered) and the shock of the check really ruined the experience for us. I had a reservation in December with a different group of friends but we will be cancelling that reservation. In my opinion, $30 per person is simply not worth it for this experience. read more

A truly unique experience! From the moment you enter into the secret library and are escorted to your reserved space, you will be transported back in time to the forbidden era of prohibition. Our hostess, Piper was so attentive and fun to interact with. She's very knowledgeable about the drink options and different spirits which helped us with our decision making. I am a big fan of the speakeasies in the downtown area and recently tried Gatsby. I was a little underwhelmed by how small it was and crowded the seating area was. We had a reservation, but were seated at the bar, which I have never experienced before and definitely prefer a table. They also do not serve vodka which was a surprise. So disappointed. Made reservations for my sisters 40th Birthday. Got the email confirmation and called for the password as instructed. When we arrived we had a few guests with flip flops. This is not allowed and unfortunately we were never made known of this rule. When you go to their website and hit reservations, make the reservations and get the email confirmation this was not mentioned once. I even called the day of the reservation to get the password as instructed. Again this was not mentioned. I have now gone to the website and found their dress code, but for a new customer this is not obvious at all. My sisters birthday surprise was ruined. I will never go to this establishment again. I'm all about following rules but at least let your customers know in the email confirmation or when they call. This is a HUGE miss!! Owners response says everything was clearly pointed out ahead of time. It was not, simple as that. Owner is quicker to respond to a Yelp review than he is to come to the door to talk to a potential guest over a miscommunication that they created. read more

Great place over the holidays to get into the Christmas spirit! Over the holidays the Gatsby is decorated to make you cheerful and ready to wrap presents. The cocktails are very creative served in fun and entertaining ways and the staff were fantastic; from the warm and entertaining entrance to a WELCOME! from the bartender. Very attentive and knowledgeable on ever cocktail in the book. We plan on introducing to our friends whenever we can get another reservation. read more

Not impressed. I've tried a couple of times to like this place as we really need special places like this in Boise; however, it was once again not a good experience. We made a reservation and when we arrived we were made to stay outside , in the cold, for 15 min. We could have easily hung out in the book area while waiting. We sat down and our server was a bit short. Somewhat inconvenienced. It was an expensive place with sub par service. I have no problem spending $$$ but at least treat us like we matter. Ended up only having one drink which took over an hour and half. Took for ever to get the bill. Had to find our server. They can do better with the attitudes and service. read more

My wife and have experienced speakeasy's in the passed and enjoy most of them. We made a trip to Boise specifically to try Gatsby. It did not disappoint! From the moment we got there to the end of the experience was nothing short of fantastic! Beginning in the library, the young lady there played her part well and really set the tone for the evening. Once inside, the ambiance, decor and genuine feel was amazing. Hanna, our server was attentive and fun. The drinks were so artfully presented and creatively balanced with unique flavors. Each cocktail was its own experience. We would absolutely recommend Gatsby for anyone looking for a different and unique speakeasy experience. This was an AMAZING experience. Went on Saturday night and the hostess who let us in did an amazing job of preparing us and recommending drinks. They don't serve Cosmos or any vodka because it wasn't available in 1920s. The drink service is very entertaining and they taste great. We had the Hemmingway, the Greta Garbot, the Figgly Wiggly, the Josephine Baker and the presentation is so much fun. I don't want to post pics because the surprise presentation is part of the fun. They have a lot of mocktail options for non drinkers and I highly recommend the Hemmingway. It tastes great and is served in a fun way. The prices are totallly reasonable for the experience. We paid the same prices for drinks there as we did for cosmos at the new place we visited and it was boring. We dressed up for the occasion and it made the night so much fun. They even had a card waiting at our table congratulating us on our anniversary. The staff is so friendly and enthusiastic. Everyone was wonderful. This will be our go to for all guests. This review is gonna be harsh, but considering the exorbitant prices Gatsby charges, the minimal effort they put into designing the bar, the poor quality of their drinks and the amazing competition they have in Boise, harsh is fully warranted. Entry to the bar requires a password given at a back alley door and passage through a "library" that is really just some bookshelves with a bunch of books extremely haphazardly tossed (literally) onto the shelves. I have no clue WTF they were going for by making the library look like the messiest and most disorganized in the history of books. What they ended up with looks like an overgrown frat boy's attempt to design a "cool" entrance to a "speakeasy". While waiting in the "library", the host mandatorily goes over a memorized and ridiculous script about how great Gatsby is and how fancy Gatsby is and how amazing their drinks are and how much time and money they spent building Gatsby blah, blah effing gag me with a spoon, blah. Once inside you will quickly realize that if they spent 1/10th as much effort hiring a designer as they do making you listen to them blow smoke up their own a55es about how great they are, they might have actually ended up with a decent bar with an actual upscale speakeasy atmosphere instead of, again, an overgrown frat boy's lame attempt at opening a "speakeasy". The space is nothing more than a bunch of tables and chairs in a room with an incredibly uninspired and boring bar on the back wall. No discernible effort was put into hiring a qualified designer to create Gatsby. "Hey, bro, let's put this here and that there and put up a vintage looking image of a lady grabbing her breast on that wall. Yeah bro, total speakeasy vibez, bro!" Queue frat boy high fives. There's one, single person bathroom for the entire bar and it's right in the middle of the bar. Not kidding. And it is barely nicer than a crappy gas station bathroom with cheap vintage newspaper wallpaper. Compared to the bathroom at Thick As Thieves or Water Bear, it's a dump. The drinks can best be described as meh...overly sweet...served with an unsolicited, blowing smoke up our own a55es again, speech about how great they are. They are a ridiculously horrible value. Gatsby charges Water Bear and Thick As Thieves Prices but spent a tiny fraction of what the owners of those bars spent designing and creating an actually worthwhile atmosphere and experience. Also, some of the drinks were served in what's supposed to resemble a vintage glass flask, next to a cocktail glass with an ice cube in it. The idea is you pop open the flask and pour your own drink. However the flasks were f( )k!ng filthy. The outside of the flasks were incredibly dirty and sticky. Frankly, we should have sent the drinks back and left. But we didn't. And we'll never go back. If you want a real cocktail made by a talented bartender, go to just about any other cocktail bar in Boise- Red Feather, Water Bear, The Modern, etc. If you want a real speakeasy experience in very well thought out and designed bar along with excellent drinks made by talented bartenders, go to Thick As Thieves. Unlike Gatsby, any of these bars will passively show you how great they are, they will never try to (literally) sell you on how great they are. read more

Gatsby is a great place to go throughout the year but especially during Mistletoe Magic. We reserved their private room for 12 of our guests and we had a great time. The ambiance, the food, the service and the cocktails were awesome. I would highly recommend Gatsby if it's just you and a date or if you're planning a private event. read more

My second visit was as great as my first! It's just a fun place to go and hang out. The drinks are inventive and the glassware is super creative. Sadly, minus one star because a couple of the drinks weren't super well balanced and the service is slow - although they warn you about this when you come in. Form over function. Lovely decor and idea, but isn't the point of a speakeasy that once inside, it's freewheeling and fun? At Gatsby you have to call for the password and make a suggested reservation with a $25 deposit on a credit card -- then stand in the cold until they can bring you into a lovely library anteroom to read a list of rules that includes "not picking anyone up." You are then escorted to your table and told to sit down (old Covid vestige approach?) So don't think about walking around, going to the bar, or god forbid talking to people you might want to meet. It feels like a nice room for pods of people to hang out in a sort of rule-heavy jazzy holodeck. I love the overall idea, but lighten up. This place could be a whole lot more fun. read more

Been to Gatsby numerous times over that par couple years, with colleagues from out of town, always recommend. Tonight at the request of the bartender, will not. Tuesday night, no one there, party of 8. Bartender wants to stick us in a corner "booth" that holds 5. Been there, sucks and cramped, tables are empty. We ask to pull 2 tables together, reluctan and bitching under-breatht allows us. Did I state No One is there. At end, bartender gets on high horse and berates the party. Never, after many years of being at places, had this ever happened. Afterwards politely said "bad form" on his approach to people, which told to never come back. I won't, kinda stubborn, or ever recommend. Server was fantastic, she was 5 star. Too bad the Tuesday bartender on a slow night was not a good person. Just know, he is not friendly Idaho. Super cool Speakeasy and just the right touch of secrecy and difficulty "getting in" - reservations are required (or plan on potentially missing out - especially on a weekend night). In our case, we made reservations about a week in advance. Day of, you have to go online or call and get the "passcode" (which they'll only provide if you have reservations). Like others have said, you can only access via the alley and then once let in, you're in a small "room" with bookcases and mirrors (not going to ruin the surprise). Once inside, fabulous drinks (be patient - well worth the wait!). Ellie Shaw was performing when we were there Saturday evening, and dressed in era appropriate attire and the music was definitely era appropriate, too.
