I selected this restaurant based on the average rating as I was looking for a good paella close to Casa Batllo. We ordered croquetas that were dry. Next up were the drinks. I ordered an Aperol spritz that was bitter. My husband ordered an old fashioned that as soon as it arrived, we knew it wasn't going to be good as it looked like orange soda. He took a sip and decided it was way too sweet. We asked the waitress if it could be remade, less sweet. She brought back another one that looked the same and tasted terrible. He sent it back and decided that was it for ordering drinks. Next the seafood paella. Sigh. It was so small and flavorless. Did I mention BURNT?! Probably the worst paella I've ever had. The check came and we were charged for 2 old fashioneds. The waiter said "yeah because I brought them to you" my husband said "and you took it back to fix it and you didn't, so I sent it back again" The waiter's response was "I just work here, go talk to the bartender" Which we did and my husband had to argue that he was not going to pay for the drinks because they were bad and he did not drink them, despite them telling him "nobody ever sends the drinks back." They finally removed the charge. I would recommend avoiding this restaurant. It's a tourist trap. read more

I asked my hotel concierge for a great place to have paella , I have never had the dish before and they knew exactly where to send me too. Gaudim restaurant is beautifully decorated, the kitchen has windows that you can watch your food being prepared and cooked. Promptly sat down and asked what I wanted to drink. I ordered grilled garlic prawns as an app but here's my confusion, what I feel was served to me was garlic shrimp. To me when you say the word prawns I expect larger shrimp. I also ordered the chicken and vegetable paella for dinner, the garlic shrimp came to the table and the dish was so good and nice size slices of garlic. Then came the chicken and vegetable paella and I was excited but then befuddled, all the pictures of paella has been a large pan filled with rice and either seafood or in this case would have been chicken and veggies. I was served a plate of chicken and vegetable paella, I started eating and it was amazing food. When I finished I asked the hostess why I was served a plate and not the large pan and she said "you are a party if one and a pan of paella is served for two people, so you was charged a single portion of paella and not the larger portion for two people. Okay that made sense. Then I ordered a Catalana dessert called Crema Catalana and it was so good. This restaurant is also frequented by the Barcelona football team and there jerseys hanging on the wall. On our last night in Barcelona we went to Gaudim. It was an experience in dining. We started with drinks and then Chef Sammy came out and told us about the appetizers and main courses. We shared several appetizers, salads and specials. The main course consisted of a seafood piaya and lamb and chicken piaya, grilled fish and garlic shrimp. On to the deserts. While visiting Barcelona, we were looking for the best paella we could find. Our hotel concierge suggested Gaudim. It was a few blocks away and we heard that it is difficult to get reservations for the evening. So, we went there for lunch. We got to meet the chef who recommended the lamb chop paella. We placed our order and then picked our calamari appetizer and drinks. What a delightful experience. The drinks were the perfect complement for the tender and lightly battered calamari. The garlic sauce took the calamari to the next level. When the beautiful platter of paella arrived, we couldn't wait to dig in. OMG, the lamb chops were pure perfection! This place is worth the wait and lives up to the hype. We really wanted to get legit paella at least one of the days we were here and Gaudil did not disappoint. I would strongly advise to make a reservation in advance of going. The hostess greeted us and after a brief wait we were seated. I saw espresso martini on the menu and had to try it, it was decent. The patatas bravas here were fantastic, crispy and the sauce was on point. Had to settle for a chicken paella which was very tasty but not the paella I imagined I would be trying. There are voluminous amounts of places serving paella in Barcelona, but this place is a stellar-standout! The best paella I've had EVER! The photo doesn't even do it true justice. It was a tad saltier than I would've personally preferred, but every grain of rice was so tasty from the plethora of seafood, and prepared perfectly al dente. And the seafood, wow! The lobsters and prawns were incredibly juicy, flavorful, and as you can see, definitely plentiful. We also got the tomato toast (just ok), and the jason croquettes, which were perfectly fried. Be sure to use the restrooms before you leave, as it's a great excuse to view the open kitchen along the way. You can see the paellas being prepared and it's fun sight to see the kitchen in action. All dishes came out piping hot, and if you saw the flames they use in that kitchen, you'll understand how that's so easily done. The staff, and I mean everyone there, was so welcoming, friendly and warm. We were literally greeted by everyone we passed as we were both coming in and leaving. The owner is on the premises working and stops by each and every table. This man knows how to run a restaurant, and knows how to train a staff!!! He should share his best practices with all low-rated Yelp restaurants in Barcelona. The paella was about $100.00 for two, but we had at least 2 servings that we took home, and it will be my breakfast tomorrow morning. A few minutes in the microwave, and I can re-live a phenomenal dinner in our apartment living room. I'd be back to Gaudim's in a heartbeat if my travels ever bring me back to Barcelona, and I'd recommend it to anyone who appreciates a really really great paella. My friend and I came here while on our Barcelona trip, after hearing many recommendations and lots of hype about Gaudim. Upon first glance of the menu, this message was correct. This place is far from cheap. We decided to get the paella del mariscos. A classic Spanish dish that we already know we like, what could go wrong? Fortunately, we still enjoyed the paella. Unfortunately, it was perhaps just above mediocre at best. Additionally, the dish may have been flamboyantly large in diameter, but the layer of paella on the dish was very thin. That said, I'm not sure I got what I paid for. Food and prices aside, the service was wonderful. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive to us. Additionally, there have been many places in Spain where I felt uncomfortable seeming like a tourist or a dumb American, and this was far from the case. I believe the price of one serving was around €30, and you have to purchase two servings. The serving size of the paella was great, as it left us full and satiated but not sick after.
