I stopped in yesterday for lunch while in the area. It's been a few years since the last time I stopped. The staff were friendly. I ordered at the counter and got the Rueben Sandwich with a side of Cornbread Salad. They were not busy when I first arrived so I was kind of surprised by the wait time for my food. There was only one other order in front of me. It was more than 10 minutes before my food was ready. The Rueben was very good. The bread was slightly toasted and had a good chew to it. They could have put a little more dressing on it. The Cornbread Salad was OK. By the time I left, the lunch rush was hitting and they were filling up fast. It's a local favorite so if you are in the area, I suggest you check them out for lunch. Lunch with a drink and tip was around $16. read more

So we came to check them out as part of the Beer Cheese Trail and it was pretty fun. There were a few people in the store, trying to order at the same time, our food came out pretty fast. Delicious slightly melted beer cheese on delicious bread with rich salty ham. Their pickles are nice too! Turning left into their parking lot is kind of a nightmare, especially at lunch time when the road and lot are packed. Definitely have to be back for their other wraps! read more

I stop here on my way to work sometimes to get something better than fast food. It's good for take out food, and eating inside by yourself or with a few ppl. Good food, great place to have a soup and sandwich combo I had the Ain't She Sweet pulled pork sandwich and white chili chicken soup. The bbq sauce was tangy and sweet and the bread was fresh and delicious. The chili was filled with chicken and beans, very tasty. I have been eating at Gaunce's for years and I always got the country ham sandwich with the cornbread salad until my last visit. This last time I tried the Chicken Ruben and it will be my standard order from now on. It was so different from any other Ruben I've had and just really, really good. They serve Coca-Cola products but bring in Winchester, they also have both Ale-8 and Diet Ale-8 available in the fountain soda options. I didn't order a whole lot from Gaunce's, but I did enjoy what I got. I got the chicken wrap and a brownie and both were very good. I could tell the ingredients in the chicken wrap were very fresh - fresh meats, veggies and grapes. I loved the combo of the banana peppers, cheese and fruit. A strange combo, but great flavors! I think their prices are affordable, but my only complaint was I wish there was a bit more meat on the wrap. If I'm ever back in Winchester I will be back, and I do recommend!! read more

Three stars for service, one star for taste! I ordered the 1/2 soup sandwich special with a veggie wrap and Santa Fe soup which really should be called tomato juice with beans. Nothing about to soup scream of Santa Fe and lacked flavor all the way around! They held back on veggie wrap or maybe I should have asked for extra veggies to have gotten a full wrap. This cafe was superb and the best soup you could get around. For a small business to survive as long as they have in the age of Paneras and Starbucks, you know they're doing it right. The service is always friendly when we go and the food is top notch, but I guess lately they've been having a hard time staffing because their hours seem to change or they just close up. They also don't carry bread bowls anymore (I assume since I was told on different occasions they just "don't have any today") and it's a shame since they were the best. Its been four years since I have been to Gaunces. It hasn't changed much inside. I oreded the Italian and soup combination (half sandwich, and bowl of soup); came with crackers, pickle. I ordered water to drink, and the cashier was caring enough to say there water doesn't taste good today and gave me bottled water at no additional charge. I have to say the staff has always been very friendly at this place, and I will say the food experience was very good, they let me sample the Santa Fe Soup and it was very tasty and loaded with beans and mixings. the sandwich came out actually a bit better then I thought I would experience at a fast food place like Quizno's or Penn Station for the same sandwich. They were a good chuck of people coming in after I was leaving, showing that others are regulars and happy with their service which I honestly thing is their pickle, good food and good service. They got his order incorrect so after taking the food back to the counter(which took forever to get his food back) the soup was cold and the sandwich looked like they had just scraped the toppings, that they incorrectly put on there, off! Good fresh sandwiches and soups. The Inside-Out Hot Brown sandwich and Club-House sandwich are my 2 favorites. The chili is a favorite also. Don't listen to all the "chili Karen's" who get all crazy about what authentic chili should and shouldn't have in it. Those people need to chill out and finally accept the fact that American chili is like cheeseburgers and hot dogs. They have different ingredients depending on the region. We grew up with chili that has spaghetti and sometimes macaroni in it. That's how my mom and grandmothers made it. And that's how they made it in the school cafeterias where I grew up. It's not a sin to have chili with spaghetti or macaroni in it. Bottom line, the chili here is fresh and always tasty. Especially when paired with a pimento cheese sandwich. read more

We were on the road and stopped here today instead of going to a fast food joint. Got the inside out hot brown with potato bacon soup and my bf got the muffaletta. Hot brown was not really much like a hot brown at all, and was super thin in contents. It literally had one slice of turkey and one slice of ham in addition to 2 slices of bacon, cheese, mayo and tomato; subway has more meat in their sammy. Bread was dense and thick, but really tasty! I wished for another slice of turkey and ham each; was pretty tasty in flavor though. Potato soup was lighter in texture, but really rich and buttery; too buttery for me. And the muffaletta was decent; not traditional, but good olive spread, but thin in meat and good bread. Prices were fair for what you get, but would be worth 4 stars if for a couple slices of meat. Oh, and sides are not included, except a tasty pickle spear. Order at the counter, sit down and pick up your food when they call your number. Don't expect them to wait around and ask you if you need anything else. They just walk away when they see you get up. Bus your own table. But all in all, a decent stop for much better than fast food food. ;) It's worth 3.5 stars to me, but can't give it the half! Would stop again if on the road and needing to get food on this side of Lexington. read more

Delicious food, kind employees, rarely have errors after it leaves the kitchen. Their coffee is exquisite. You never have to wait, but it seems always fresh. The food is a perfect brunch treat. A hole in the wall that will always impress those you bring to it.
