We were told anything we needed would be at the Big Store and if it wasn't at the Big Store we didn't need it. This was accurate. There's a good selection of food stuffs - not one of everything but a good variety all the same. There's a smokehouse that sells brisket and sausage in the store, a deli with pizza and fried chicken, and even a pineapple cutting machine. We came to the peninsula with some favorite food products from HEB and I'd do that again. I just learned that outside of some product specific choices I could have come with much less and just shopped local. There's a hardware and souvenir shop inside. I simply visited this store for food items although I heard on the intercom that they were paging personnel in the hardware section of the store. That being said, the grocery section is well stocked with food items with plenty of signage to direct customers to the proper isle. Upon entering the store, I noticed an employee sanitizing the handrails of the sloped entrance to the store. Nice touch! Upon leaving the store, I ordered one of their made to order pizzas. It tasted pretty good, much better than expected. They simply take a frozen cheese pizza and place any amount toppings on it and place it on a conveyor belt driven pizza oven and within 10 minutes my pizza was cooked and boxed and ready to go! read more

pineapples were on sale for 99cents today! my kids love pineapples! And they have this cool machine that cuts and slices them for you. We slice up a couple of pineapples and when we get to the checkout, they charge us $7.99 for each one. I show them that they are on sale for 99 cents. The cashier gets another cashier who says that sliced pineapple is $7.99. Nowhere on the machine does it say that. I ask for a manager- an older lady- who tells me that it's $7.99 regardless of the fact that the pineapple tag says 99 cents. Then I tell her that she should probably label the machine so everyone knows if you buy a 99 cent pineapple, they will charge you $7 for a machine to cut it. She tells me that she's not interested in doing that And it's too bad! She is SO rude to me. Honestly, awful service! I have frequented Bolivar since the early 90's right after my grandparents had a house built here. I always love coming to Crystal Beach, and I always love finding a reason to visit the Big Store. Upon walking into the Big Store, you are always greeted right away by the security guard. This friendly older gentleman will always greet right away with a loud and throaty salutation and will let you know he is there. Think of this guy as a loud door chime, as you can hear him greet every person waking in from the very back of the store. After you walk into the store, the variety of items to purchase are endless. Groceries? Sure. Hardware for the house? No problem. Gasoline for your car? Fill'er up. Throttle cable for your mini bike? No sweat. Beach parking sticker? That will be ten dollars please. The motto for the Big Store is "if they don't have it, you really don't need it." It is true that convenience does come at a price, and you can expect to pay a little more for items in this store. But, considering the alternative of driving 10-15 minutes to get to the ferry and waiting an hour to get on it, the little extra premium is not too bad. Keep this in mind when you go to the register and think about complaining. Think of all the beach time you are not losing waiting on the ferries. The next time you are in Bolivar, make it a point to stop by and check this place out. They also have a decent selection of souvenirs to purchase and cool looking t-shirts. Enjoy! read more

I was expecting much less on the island, but this place was pretty nice. While a little worn, it was clean and the staff was friendly. They had a good variety for a smaller store. Fresh produce and a good selection of meat. The prices are higher than at a HEB or Wally World, but convenience has its cost. They offer large bathrooms attached for beach goers. Spent Thanksgiving week on the peninsula with my family of 40. We literally got everything we needed for all our meals here at the big store, including Thanksgiving meals. I can't express how much a blessing it was to have the big store here. I will be detailed here, as I was having trouble finding input before I arrived here on the Peninsula so I hope this will help others. 1. Groceries. The Big Store will have almost everything you will need for your basic groceries. No they do not have ethnic foods, no they do not have a lot of organic or plant based foods. They have the basics, and they have em stocked well. Chicken, beef, pork, breakfast items. You name it. They have it. The produce is extensive and they have all what you would have in a regular supermarket. They even have my new favorite thing, BOUDIN! The prices are unnoticeable compared elsewhere unless you are comparing to Aldi/Walmart. They DO NOT jack up price that much, so do not believe what other reviewers are saying. Plus, you shouldn't mind paying more for convenience. 2. Deli. We ordered fresh fried crispy chicken one day for lunch and it was amazing. If you're looking to feed a big family call them ahead and order fried chicken. It's affordable and tasty and hot. We ordered 100pcs of mixed fried chicken and they were able to accomodate with no issues. Also check their specials as they have different specials each day of the week. Some days they have ribs, some days fried fish, some days asian food (lomein, chowmein, or something like that). The boudin balls are a must here! 3.) Pizza. Hunt Brothers Pizza. It's literally $10 for the first pizza and $9 for any other pizza after the first. You can choose whatever you want on em! Look for their menu online, it's VERY VERY good. Comparable to ANY chain pizza joints. We ordered 12 pizzas on lunch it was excellent. Support these guys and give them a call in advance they'll have it ready for you. The Pizza is located in the Deli, in the store. 4.) Deli by the Meat/Stand. This is different from the Deli in the front becuase this Deli has the rotisserrie chicken and ribs. Both great prices and fresh. Come grab some for lunch and you will be able to feed a lot, fast, reasonably. 5.) Disposables/Toiletries. They have it all here too. Napkins. Towels. Toilet Paper. Disposable plates and utensils. All the stuff you will need for your rental will be available here and within reasonable prices. 6.) Household Items. This store doubles as an Ace Hardware! They got beach supplies, grilling supplies, and whatever else you would need from a hardware place. It's all inside the BIG STORE! Random Items and Shout Outs. The bathrooms available outside near the gas pumps is REALLY convenient and a nice touch. Most places DO NOT want you using their public restrooms but the BIG STORE specifically puts a really nice and big bathroom right outside for everyone, customers or not, to be able to use. Easy access right outside. Can't thank them enough for this small thing. Also, the girl that checked out my items each night, thank you for assisting us and helping me with everything I needed. Met her the first night, and she was there each day I was there shopping. To the Manager as well, thank you for all the insight and help since we were not locals. It meant a lot to me and my family. This store has it all! I thought it was just a grocery store but it's a hardware store, a liquor store, a clothing store, a fast food place, AND a grocery store! With a pretty good selection all around. The big store has everything. The most noticeable would be the Ace hardware. There's a bank ,there's an extremely overpriced grocery store, there's a little hot deli in there. something somebody calls a bakery , however looking at it, i dare say not really call it a bakery. the meat section in the grocery store is a little scary. what I looked at did not look fresh and it was again greatly overpriced. Everything was overpriced. And I know why, everything has to be brought in from the mainland, I get it. So if you are out here and you need something quick just be prepared to pay for that convenience. I would definitely avoid the meat and cheese areas. Meat because it doesn't look fresh , cheese was super overpriced. Dairy overpriced, eggs are okay. Bread okay. Product may look like this because We are out here in January. and rotation isn't really happening. Little hot deli that they have in there, $6.99 for a plate looks good, if you get there when everything is fresh, maybe around 12:00 or 1:00. When I got there at 3:00 I had to pass, kind of looked congealed and crusty. There's a nice little gift shop area, and the ace hardware seems to have everything, including major appliances. If you need it, I'm pretty sure this ace hardware will have it. You might question the 4 stars considering my comments on the grocery part of the store. I understand businesses need to make money and I don't fault them for the prices , I'm just warning everyone about the prices. I still give it a good four-star review because the selection is there and when you need something , it is available. Don't expect great selections on everything. By selection is limited flavored creamer selection is limited just things like that. Again we all understand the reason why and it makes sense so it's not a bad thing it's just a realistic thing. If you happen to find yourself on the Bollivar Peninsula and need something, this is where you'll find it. They don't call it the big store for nothing. Since this store has so many different items, I will try and break down the different sections for you. Exterior/Front Entrance - the exterior parking lot is pretty typical except there are gas pumps directly in the middle of the lot. I suggest fueling up only if you're coming shop here at the same time as the lot is somewhat difficult to navigate. Inside the front doors you'll find two of my favorite things in the store. The first is the sign that reads "free ride in a police car if you shoplift" and the second is the security guard right inside the door. As I walked in he made an initial assessment to determine if I was a degenerate or not. since I wasnt a degenerate, I felt safe. Grocery Store - The grocery section reminded me a lot of a small town grocery store. The only difference was that this store also had many specialty food items. The beer/wine section of the store was pretty massive, but the focus was on domestics and mass produced beers in the coolers. I was able to find some Texas brewed beers in the non-cooled section so if you're looking for something different, I suggest you check the shelves. Souvenir Shop - this section was typical of beach souvenir shops. There were the cool vinyl street signs in names I didn't normally see in shops like this. My favorite was "Jesus St" since I am a fan of that dude. In addition to trinkets there were also boogie boards, beanie babies and unique items like dolphin fan pulls and shark tooth necklaces. Hardware Store - I didn't really visit this section, but they did look to have a lot of items one would need if they were a homeowner. They also had fishing gear, clothing and probably a whole lot more I didn't get to see. Checkout - The checkout was friendly and pretty typical for a small grocery. The only difference is that I was able to buy a permit for parking on the beach at the register which was pretty neat. If you come to Crystal Beach, I can all but guarantee you'll find yourself here. read more

Staying out on Bolivar Peninsula, this place makes you feel like you aren't living on the moon. They have decent selection of wines, staples, spices, cooking oil, etc. The ACE Hardware section looks pretty complete as well. The store is surprisingly bigger than we expected. Typical grocery store with a bank, restaurant area, ace hardware and a tourist section. They have a pretty wide selection of whatever you're looking for. I've been craving something sweet for days and couldn't figure out what I wanted. Until today - I decided I wanted a snow cone and we were off to Rita's to get one. But, they're closed the majority of the week in the winter so we decided to go back to GCM to check out their selection of ice cream. We found a selection of "sno-balls" and let me tell you - we were pleasantly surprised by how legit these are. They taste and have the same consistency of a fresh snow cone. There was no toilet paper, paper towels or soap. What there was, was the dirtiest restroom I have ever been in including porta- potty's . The garbage cans were overflowing with paper towels, toilet paper and tampons. Yes, tampons on the floor. If you have most of the shoppers in the area, you have a responsibility to keep the restrooms clean. I will try my best to avoid The Big Store.
