I was scoping out fish mongers for when I come back to Galveston on business. I love red fish but haven't had the time to go fishing myself. I stopped by both Sampson & Sons. They were getting ready to close early due to an appointment but took the time to talk with me. They showed me their fish and shrimp, explained their process and answered all of my questions. All of the fish were clear eyed and had no discernible odor... all good signs of freshly caught fish. I will be back to Galveston next week and plan on stopping at Sampson to get red fish, my favorite fish. I visited another market next door, but the personal attention just wasn't there for me. They were nice, but Sampson's really knocked it put of the park for me by staying, explaining the process, and offering to fillet my fish for me free of charge. Someone who will take the time to show a stranger around, even when they have an appointment, is someone I wish to do business with. Upon my return, I'll take photos and review the fish its self. On customer service and appearance of fish alone, I give Sampson 5 stars. read more

The "son" of the Sampson & Sons, Milton, is so damn sexy. He's worth the trip alone. Go buy some shrimp and either meet him in person, or look at pictures of him on the wall while you buy your fish. Steamy. I go down there just to see him. Their seafood is also way better than Katie's. Katie's is terrible and they source all of their seafood from farms, whereas Sampson's gets theirs fresh caught same-day. Your only source for seafood. Don't go to Mondo Burger across the street (Katie's). read more

We visited earlier in the week, picked up head on shrimp, took back to our vacation spot and had a shrimp boil. The shrimp we got here was absolutely delicious! Most flavorful tender and perfect shrimp! Mouthwatering! We were so impressed we made another special trip here today during our vacation to grab more head on shrimp. We had another boil tonight to fill our bellies with amazing shrimp and enough shrimp to carry home for another boil later on. Prices were great, staff very helpful and kind. Shrimp had just been caught and were just delicious! The guy working with us let us watch the harbor birds eat the parts they throw back in the water, was fun and entertaining. Great, fresh catfish and shrimp. They even skin and fillet the fish for you while you wait. The only weird thing was the birds flying into the building to snatch fish/shrimp off the table. But, what can you do? We had such a fantastic meal with our kids and grandkids and the seafood was definitely the highlight! We will be back when in the area. read more

The freshest seafood in the Texas. The fish comes right of the boat each morning and placed on ice ready for customers to come and get it. The place is small as it can only hold about 5-8 customers at a time, but it is pretty quick once you get in and get your fish. Parking is also limited, but there is some free parking along the pier and in the lot on the other side of the train tracks. This place is located right next to Katies, so the prices are basically the same. They do offer fish cleaning a fish cleaning service for anyone that was out on any of the fishing charters. read more

Down right rude. Expensive. Stay clear of this rip off seafood market. On the recommendation of a Galveston island local friend, resident and business man. My wife, myself and our friend went to Sampson's to get 10 pounds of Jumbo shrimp to take back to Dallas with us. We always, and I mean always go to Seabrook for our Shrimp when we are in town. $10+ per pound for jumbo / large and not even de-veined. Being the bartering person I am, and knowing what we ALWAYS pay in Seabrook, I ask a gentleman if he can match the $6.50 per pound and de-veined that we get from Emery's in Seabrook. This individual blew up and started trash talking Emery's and acted like he didn't know them but then he started trashing Emery's as being Vietnamese. Who gives a flip what their Ancestry is???? I want shrimp. Then I ask him another question that was actually relevant to the Seafood Market next door and then he started trashing "Yankee" people. This was all done right in front of our friend that recommended them. Needless to say, I turned around and walked out. Drove our happy booties to Emery's and bought all they had left of Jumbo Shrimp de-veined for $6.70 per pound. Stay clear of this trash hole. I'd give it zero stars if I could. read more

Just got home and we did not get colossal, did not get 4lbs. paid $1.50/lb extra for cleaning lots of veins left Worst they mix ice in w/shrimp so I could not weigh it, and it was all water and ice and shrimp. We came in on a mid-Thursday morning and were greeted with the three Billy Goats Gruff... or so we thought. They were just three sweet guys looking to sell some AMAZING looking shrimp! (No fish that day, just shrimp.) We only needed about 9 x-large, which look absolutely gorgeous, at the princely sum of $5.50 out the door. I'm pretty sure we ended up with about 10 or 11 shrimp, btw. Couldn't be happier. :) Walked next door & got some snapper (that'd just come off the boat, literally) fillets, and our morning shopping was complete. :) read more

Very quick service on the morning we left Galveston to drive back home to DFW area. The guy who helped us was very friendly and helpful and gave us great advice on how to freeze shrimp to keep it the freshest when thawed . We found their prices to be reasonable but on the high side but you are getting fresh shrimp which we can't get that far north. read more
