Canned Draft Latte, Brioche One Bite, Granola Minis, Juice - Sawtelle | Los Angeles, California
    Justin L.

It's a gourmet grocery store showdown! I went to Bristol Farms, Erewhon, and Gelson's on the Westside to see which one reigns supreme when it comes to snacks and prepared foods. Tagline: "Life Tastes Better Here" Initial thoughts: Cool mixed use concept, with Gelson's as one of the main tenants at the West Edge complex. Can see residents and office workers coming here on their lunch breaks. Nice plaza with lots of tables and seating areas. Experience: Underground parking is free with validation. Take the escalator or elevator up to the ground level. Received a friendly good morning from a staff member, everyone else was also courteous. The bakery is near the self check-out area. It was pretty empty on a Friday morning at 8AM. Spacious overall. Some hot foods were available but not many grab and go meals at this time. Poke bar, salad bar, entrees, soups, etc. were empty. Most of their products are familiar name brands, with a few local and premium items. Food: The Röckenwagner Bakery brioche one bite buns were not soft or fluffy like I thought they would be. Their cold pressed fruit juice smoothie was average. I got a couple cans of La Colombe for a coworker, they said the triple draft latte was good. MadeGood granola minis are fun bite sized treats I wouldn't mind getting again, but in bulk at Costco next time. Verdict: #1 Baby Bristol is tiny but mighty (Westwood location) #2 Expensive Erewhon is a hit or miss (Santa Monica location) #3 Gourmet Gelson's is skippable ( West Edge complex location)

THE Jason Mamoa and Blaine Halvorson at Gelson's in West LA on 06.07.2024. :-)

I had the opportunity to meet THEE JASON MAMOA and his business partner BLAINE HALVORSON in support of Meili Vodka at GELSON's!! This is actually the first time I've stepped foot into a Gelson's since I have lived in LA County for the past few months. This new location is in West LA at West Edge. So very trendy, clean and bright with a wide variety of gourmet items! If I lived or worked in this complex, I'd definitely be a regular at Gelson's. After taking a photo with Jason and Blaine, I immediately noticed the Poke Bar and the free samples. Yum! I will keep this in mind when I'm craving for poke! Service was great. From the crowd control outside of Gelson's to the service inside, seems like they're a well oiled machine!

Cheese department with the wine department conveniently located next to it!

The newest Gelson's is located on Bundy and Olympic in the West Edge building, a mixed residential and retail space. There is an underground parking lot. The entrance sign says "West Edge". Inside the parking lot, there was no clear signage, that I could find, saying where the market is located. There is no Gelson's entrance underground (you have to go up an escalator or elevator to get to the market). Thus, I was not sure where to park or where to go after parking to access the market. While Gelson's does validate, it is only for 90 minutes which was not enough time for me to do a big shopping trip between February rain storms while trying to find items in a new market I've never been to before. All the other markets I've gone to that validate have at least two hours minimum with validation which is usually sufficient. I went a few minutes over 90 minutes ($3). I paid at the machine outside of the Gelson's elevators. However, when I went to exit, the exit machine tried to charge me again. I had to get the attendant and explain that I already paid in order to be let out. After much back and fourth, he finally opened up the gate It was a rattling experience that should not have happened. Truth be told, the parking lot was the only negative about this place. The market is big and beautiful. The staff is eager to please and were also very friendly and chatty. It felt like a neighborhood market. They have a lot of ready made food options including a large deli, pizza by the slice, sandwich making, bowl assembly, and lots of good looking grab and go food. There's a hot food section, a poke bar, and a salad bar. Everything looked very fresh and delicious. They even have a juicing department which I thought was cool and super unique. I also really admired their floral department. There were lots of options to choose from including some potted cacti which is a rare but extremely awesome offering. Aisles were clean, well-stocked, and well-organized. Lots of great, high quality merchandise to choose from down every aisle. Loved their cheese section in the back and it is appropriately placed next to the wine. Another distinctive feature of this particular Gelson's is the oil and vinegar tasting section. A noteworthy addition! Lastly, they have a Victor Benes Bakery here with lots of beautiful cakes and cookies. They had free samples of lemon cake to try. Delicious. Checkout was super easy. I used some of my Gelson's coupons and I also used the app to get points for my purchase. Gelson's is pricey so it was nice to save. I did call the market after my visit and spoke to the manager, Pablo, about the parking situation. He was so sweet and understanding and really, really lovely. The customer service here is so awesome! He said he'd address my concerns about the parking and promised to generously make it up to me when I return. Though I have not yet returned, I really appreciated his customer service and problem solving skills. I decided to only subtract one star for my experience in the parking lot. It definitely put a damper on my experience at this Gelson's so it has to be acknowledged as part of the review. However, after speaking to Pablo, I realized that the parking is something the market needs to address with the property and not necessarily something Gelson's has total control over. I really do hope they are able to improve the parking experience to make it more inviting for the general public to visit this Gelson's location. The market itself is absolutely lovely.

Beautiful store! Gelson's is always clean and super nice but this one tops them all! Spacious and bright with natural lighting, great variety of groceries and products, clean deli and self serve food areas, all of these made this store a SUPER supermarket! It is located at the bottom floor of a new mix use (commercial and residential) building at the corner of Olympic and Bundy. Parking is underground - spacious, clean, and easy. And they validate. We love their fresh produce- found more salad packages than most other markets. The cheese counter is pretty impressive too. Staff were friendly and efficient. Overall a very pleasant shopping experience! The only reason I didn't give them a 5-star was the price level. Many items are twice the price you'd find in other stores. Even at sale prices, they were still a bit high. That said, I think their quality is very good. And they have brands and varieties other stores don't have. I'll definitely come back and shop here.... But hope to see better values here in the future.

I love their delicious thick juicy rare burgers + great red wine selections at their bar. Quick and friendly service. Very convenient.

Who doesn't like pizza by the slice?

Not surprisingly, Gelson's which recently opened in West LA is quite spectacular. It is the best of the best of the best-but at a cost. From the Pizza by the slice counter to the liquor and wine section to the tantalizing bakery everything is as you'd expect at Los Angeles premier grocery. The adjacent Wine Bar cafe is beautiful with a great menu. Everyone I encountered was polite and professional. The crowd is interesting as it's next door to Riot Games headquarters and Icon Fitness to name a few. Finally, the outdoor seating is artsy and inviting. I enjoyed my visit and for sure will be a regular.

Honestly, I was thrilled that a Gelson's opened in WLA as I love Gelson's and have been going to the one in Century City since I was a little girl. But, this one, no matter how many chances I've given it.....is just SUBPAR. I recently ordered one of their Holiday meals and tell me why (pictures attached) this would be acceptable? Pieces of green everywhere on the ham that I would need to brush off in order to serve. How did it get there? Then upon further inspection, the ham smelled sour, pungent. Did not want to take any chances so did not serve. Thank goodness I had backup as I ordered extra ham on the side and I was shocked when I got home because of how different the two were: the one that came with the meal was dirty and spoiled. And the extra I got at the store that they carved was fresh and honey-glazed. I never should've ordered the meal. I should've just ordered the ham. I'm really disappointed and disgusted. And now Victor Benes. There's is the ONLY chocolate cake I eat: The Chocolate Parisian. I never liked chocolate cake until my 16th birthday when I was given a whole cake and from that time on I was in love. The BEST. The CC branch has slices. WLA does not. They sold me on the Yulelog which they said is "the same". On the contrary. The Yulelog was dry and stale. Not enough chocolate frosting. A waste. Same with their Chocolate Raspberry slice. Again, I'm disappointed. REALLY disappointed. This was for Christmas. Instead, I was served dirty old ham and stale cake. I can't recommend this place. I don't believe based on experience, that their food is always fresh. *I still can't get over the ham; that's not how you serve your customer, with bits and pieces of trash....was the ham leftovers? Plated but someone changed their mind and back it went in the display?

I had just come back from going…read moreout and ran into my mom in front of the elevator, and she asked me to go to the market with her. But honestly, this place is absolutely terrible and horrible. Both my mom and I agreed that we will never come back here again. My mom had come to get a refund because one of the pears she bought the day before was completely rotten. The market manager refunded $2 to her credit card, which was fine. The real problem started after that. When my mom was trying to drive out of the parking lot, the gate bar went up after scanning the parking ticket, but then suddenly came crashing down. If my mom hadn't quickly backed up, it could have hit her car. The bigger issue was that after that, the gate bar never went back up again. Cars behind us had to use another exit nearby. My mom, who was very shaken, went to ask the market manager what to do, but she said she didn't know. (At first, I stayed in the car and had to tell the cars behind us to use the other exit because the gate was not working). I was very upset when I heard that, so I went inside and asked the manager for the building management's contact number. She gave me a number, but when I called, the person who answered kept saying she couldn't find the address even after I repeated it more than ten times. Eventually, she told me they no longer manage that building. So I asked her to provide the contact number for the property management that handles the building, and she gave me another number. but it led to an automated system. After selecting the emergency option, a man answered, but even after I clearly spelled out "Zion" multiple times (Z as in Zebra, I as in Ice cream, O as in Oscar, N as in Nancy), he still couldn't understand and then told me that they no longer manage the building and hung up. We arrived at the market around 5 PM and didn't get out until 7 PM. No one helped us at all. After the call, I went back to the market manager again, but she still said she didn't know anything. It made me so angry--how can a manager not even know the property management contact for the building they work in? I also have low blood sugar, so when I get hungry, I start shaking. I ended up buying a piece of bread from the Paris Baguette inside the market. I didn't have cash with me, so I had to pay $3.50 with my card, but thankfully, the staff there was very kind. In the end, my brother had to come all the way from Burbank to get a new parking ticket for us so we could finally get out--after two hours. If he hadn't come, we might have been stuck there even longer or had to abandon the car. Thinking about it now still makes me extremely angry. The customer service is terrible, the building management is a mess, and there was no security at all. I never want to come back to this place. We spent two hours there, from 5 PM to 7 PM, completely wasting our time. Because of this, I couldn't do anything I had planned for the rest of the afternoon and evening. It was an absolute nightmare. My mom was also very upset and couldn't believe a place like this exists. FYI) Every time I come to this market, there is absolutely no cell phone signal., which is another major downside.

It was so beautiful and intricately arranged that I was sure they painstakingly did this themselves. But, no, they got it at LA G&C and went on to describe all the wonderful offerings in such glowing terms that we decided to go out of our way to give it a try. And so, on what could be called a rare dreary day in LA, we made our way to the up and coming hip neighborhood now called Melrose Hill. If you haven't checked out the area, you should probably Google it -- this is a dynamic area undergoing restoration. The main developers aim to keep the character of old Los Angeles while attracting the latest and best venues -- cafes, restaurants, bars -- among them Los Angeles Grocery & Cafe. There is a large parking lot accessed directly off Melrose. When it is time to leave, you simply drive through to the side street exit. Easy! Look at my photos -- the place is barn-like, keeping its rafters from the original building true to the promise of the building owners, with lots of unique inventory and room to add much, much more. You will find things you don't see elsewhere. We snapped up a bunch of items to try, including a few of my all time faves: gnocchi, sunflower butter, and egg salad. I would have gotten the pistachio butter but it has sugar and I like my nut butters sugar-free. If we hadn't been pressed for time, we would likely have loaded the cart with more, so that means a return visit. I want these people to thrive, so please consider coming over here and while you are at it, check out the rest of Melrose Hill, just following Melrose Avenue farther eastward. It won't be long before the entire area is the best place to be in L.A.

Some items don't need jars and they sell paper bags for .10 each. I did a kombucha/kefir tasting. Marcy brought these steel bowls over. No waste at all! If you drink the POG kefir soda at Erewhon and love it, try it here! It's made w fruit and is noticeably better! And POG there is my fave. Just try it at Re_!!! So when I was checking out I asked Marcy about being more prepared and bringing my own glasses next time. They've thought of everything!!!! There's iPads and scales in the front of the store. They weigh your empty containers and give you a sticker with the tare weight and then subtract it from the weight at the end! Revolutionary! They add 3% for the employees. I should've added more. Marcy was amazing and worth it. I'm honestly not big on tipping everyone for just breathing but if all the employees are like Marcy, they are worth way more than 3%! If you sign up you get 100 points instantly, $1 = 1 pt, and at 200 pts you get $10! It's not hard to spend in places like this but it's beyond worth it. I keep seeing things about the harms of plastic and don't get me started on all the other crap in our food. I foresee this as a new staple in my diet and home. They even have cleaning products! I'm getting my spices here from now on too! I'm a fan and I'll be back! Thank you Marcy and to the owners that had this amazing idea!
