On this hot and steamy day of April 13th, 2008 Thai Festival and Songkran Festival (Thai New Year)…read morehas arrived. Easy access via Red Line metro, it felt like half of LA has showed up. Lots of vendors and stands with standard Thai food, like Pad Thai, Fried Rice, chicken, beef, pork, sticky rice and more. Unfortunately the long lines in sizzling heat were necessary evil, so the food tasted even better after 30 mins standing in line. But the longest line must have been for refreshingly looking shaved ice with lots of tasteful colors, needless to say, we did not even approach that one. There was also hot and sweaty Muay Thai Kickboxing, both men and women, super fun and entertaining to watch, strategically located next to the awesome beer garden! In general, it felt like 90 degrees for the first time in months and like half of LA decided to pour on the streets, and why not? I wish there was more space to explore, perhaps more than Hollywood blvd, maybe next year. 4 stars for sticky rice that has just run out as soon as we approached the vendor!

Sa-wat-dee~! This…read moreevent was held on 4/13, in celebration of Thai New Year. It was a super hot day and the event was packed with people waiting in line or walking along side of the vendors, which were lined up in the middle of hollywood blvd from Western to Normandie. According to wikipedia, "the most obvious celebration of Songkran is the throwing of water. People roam the streets with containers of water or water guns, or post themselves at the side of roads with a garden hose and drench each other and passersby. This, however, was not always the main activity of this festival. Songkran was traditionally a time to visit and pay respects to elders, including family members, friends and neighbors." I was wondering why I saw little kids with water guns and one was encouraged by his grandmama to shoot water at me, lol. It all makes sense now. Also, I was surprised to see the grandma fill the water gun with bottled water. It was so hot that day that I'd rather just drink the water! I'll be better prepared next time around. Muahahaha (half-kidding) tee-hee-hee. ^_^ Mostly, I saw people getting thai massages, watching amateur/for fun boxing matches, shopping for good eats (fresh produce & cooked food), and shopping for fashion or decorative items. I went there with fellow Anteaters/Ex-Roomies/Friends and Foodies. We were only interested in shopping for good eats. =P We all tried a few curry dishes, the pad thai, chicken satay, a minced pork dish, and the sticky rice with mango. The sticky rice w/ mango ($5) was my favorite! Second, was the curry ($6). And, third place goes to the minced pork. The pad thai was very disappointing and the chicken satay was waay too dry. I was told you can get much better food at the Wat Thai Buddhist Temple in North Hollywood during special events or holidays such as Thai New Year. Here's the address & telephone #: 12936 Burton St North Hollywood, CA 91605 (818) 780-4200

Relieved and rejoiced to finally find a place nearby that had all the Thai ingredients I needed!…read moreSmall but good. Sadly the economy has increased prices of course but that's not really the store's fault. PASTES Great selection of curry pastes, chili pastes, and seasoning packets for making things like Tom Kha and Papaya salad (All ranged roughly around $1-2). A selection of jarred sauces like , shrimp pastes, fried chili paste, and other sauces that were a few dollars more. COCONUT MILK/CREAM I focused on the Mae Ploy coconut cream which was $3.79 AROMATICS Aromatics like galangal, lime, and lemongrass are available in both dry powder form and fresh form. The powders ranged from $3-6). You can also get star anise either in dried bags or as a powder as well SAUCE Good selection of fish sauces and soy sauces. Large Viet Hung fish sauce - $13 I also spotted cheaper brands like Tiparos, Megachef, etc THAI CHILI POWDER! Finally. Been trying to find it at all the other Asian markets and it's been weirdly hard. I got my trusted 7oz red top container for $4.99 THAI TEA Thai tea in both canned ($3.39) and bagged instant form ($5) PRODUCE I was a bit sad at first on how small the produce section was but it turns out they actually really did have all the needed basics there. - Green papaya (they only have whole, no pre-shred) - Holy Basil in bags - Turmeric in bags - Thai chili peppers - Galangal $7/pound - Lemongrass stalks (I remember it said either $2-3 but didn't specify any further whether that meant PER stalk or per ounce or per pound, etc - Makrut ("Kaffir") lime leaves in bags (said it was $26 a pound but didnt provide a smaller, more realistic measurement - long beans - daikon - as well as a very modest collection of mainstream produce like tomatoes, onions, button mushrooms, etc CANNED Things like bamboo, including thin or thick cuts They also have my personal favorite jarred bamboo in chili oil. RAMENS They've got a small selection of ramens, also including variations of Indomie Mie Goreng ($1 per bag) and 1-2 Korean selections like Shin Ramen The sections I breezed by included oils, rice, snacks, and a few fridges with meats, eggs, desserts, frozen galangal, miso, etc. Unfortunately they didn't have the frozen precut lemongrass containers you sometimes get at Thai or Viet stores They also take card! It's a tiny tiny store with an equally tiny parking lot, so be prepared expect a full lot sometimes. I luckily found a spot but also noticed that it can be a bit of work to shimmy your car back out when you leave since they're packed so tight Definitely worth a visit though if you need this specialty of ingredients.

And she made something amazingly delicious out of it! Fast forward a few years later, we were blocks away when I reminded her about this place. She asked if we can make a stop so she can make that same dish again. (She mentioned Hubbers might have made a request for it.) I was curious enough to go in this time. I expected it to be crowded because Sanamluang is incredibly popular. We were lucky to find the only open parking spot which happened to be right up front. This place is deceiving! Looks like a no nonsense place looking from the outside but it's pretty big once you get inside! They even have a seafood and meat section at the back. They'll also clean and fry in-store purchase fish. I did notice that most of their products are pricier compared to other Asian markets. I didn't have the need for any, so I came out empty handed. But Mom got the cut of meat she needed to make us dinner this week! Okay first stop (for me.) Being far from home, not sure when I'd come back... if the need comes up and I happen to be around, maybe...?

Waked in today around 4pm and was greeted by 2 of their employees. They gave me a very nice, warm welcome and even asked me what was it that I needed? I told them that I am browsing, but if I need help, I will let them know. I haven't been here in decades. I happened to be in Hollywood and remembered this lovely Middle Eastern store. They have fresh produce, variety of imported foods, great deli, selection of fresh meat, & dairy. They also have a good selection of baked goods. Got 1pint of Sour Cream, 5 bananas, 3 oranges, a bag of apples, couple of different variety of breads. Matnakash, (Armenian bread) & lavash-another type of Armenian bread. I also got water, box of tea bags, ready made salads, different types of berries, some seasoning & dried fruit. Employees are very helpful and the store is not big, but somehow they fit everything there and is fully stocked, organized and very clean. Prices are unbeatable. Very affordable. Parking is very challenging and it's street parking only! If you happen to be in the area, give this cute, quaint store a try!

I'm very disappointed to have to write this, but this grocery store is UNSAFE!…read moreNO ONE who works there is properly wearing a mask. It's either under their chin or under there nose as they are yelling across the store, sorting producer, and cutting deli meats. There are signs everywhere, but the employees of all people ignore them. I like what this store has to offer for unique Armenian groceries. Cheeses, dips, teas, grains, chocolates, and more. I was excited to support a small business during the pandemic, but I will NEVER go here again when the workers clearly have no regard for the safety of their customers. If there is this much disregard now, what were they doing before? Many customers were not wearing masks either. Btw, you don't need to take off your mask to talk on the phone. You can be heard, and if you don't believe me, and feel you must take off your mask to speak, and you must take the call now, then please, please go outside.

If you meal prep and you need meal prep containers and are spending more than $1/container, get it here. If you have a big family and you want to buy your items in bulk, come here. It's more like a warehouse so don't expect a Crate & Barrel environment. Some might judge but trust me, it's the same stuff you'll find at other stores but will cost you 2-10x more. Anyway, bottom line is if you don't mind a little dust and want to save money, make a trip here and make sure you have space in your trunk so you can make your trip worthwhile. Don't come here just for a bag of straws. You might as well go to Pavillions. But yes, I'll come back when I need a refill on supplies.

(Did it for my daughter's birthday - all her friends loved it.) Prices are decent, especially for what you get.
