My girlfriend and I went on vacation to England the last week of October but before we went, I was looking for a way to get some extra cash for the trip for "emergency" funds. My girlfriend suggested that I take some of my jewelry to a pawn shop to take out a loan and when we returned to the States, I would just pay it back with interest. I'd never gone to a pawnshop before and I've heard crazy stories about them and I've seen TV shows about them and I was a bit apprehensive. Plus I had no idea how much my jewelry was worth or how the whole loan process worked. I live in Park Slope. I went to Gem on a Saturday afternoon and waited on line for a few minutes. I told the young man behind the counter my story but he really seemed like he didn't care. He just took my jewelry and weighed/measured/eyeballed it. Then he tested a liquid on some of the gold. Then he called a manager to, I guess review the loan or check his estimations. The manager (her name was Cindy, I'm pretty certain) struck up a conversation with me and my girlfriend. She explained the loan process and the formula to compute how much to lend on jewelry. She was very kind and informative, unlike the original pawnbroker I dealt with. She made the process less tense and made me more at ease. She told me that I would be surprised at how many people from all walks of life pawn jewelry on a regular basis. She was even more generous with the loan, knowing that it was short term and would be paid back quickly. In the future, I will come back to this store if I need quick cash. read more

Things have changed since Brenda and fFelix left.My pawns there are all mixed up.A manager Chary looked at me like I didn't know what I'm talking about but she herself is confused.Told me my jewelry was still there collected interest and in 2 days sent it to be melted.Told me to call her the Monday but ignored my calls and gave the guy enough time to continue his melting.I can hear her in the background saying let her call me back.Finally got through to her and she forgot cause she had meetings all morning.She cannot handle the store and lied that I spoke to her continuously on the situation.I'm there 10 years and never had this problem .Beware you might be paying on jewelry that's not there.Make sure you keep pics of your jewelry.Right now I'm waiting to speak to someone and I want to take out a jewelry that 3 items is missing but was told to pay the whole redemption fee.Scared they will sell before discussing redemption price????Begging for a manager/owner to call to discuss situation .Bas customer service no one to turn to read more

Gem Pawn Brokers is the best. When Covid 19 hit. I got hit HARD like many. As an airline worker we were furloughed. Hours got cut immediately to save the airline. I had a few tickets at Gem Pawnborkers Downtown Brooklyn. I thought no income coming in. I'm bound to lose all my stuff. Valuable stuff too. I thought to write the manager of the store a letter just to keep in touch. I sent the email. Thinking a deal is a deal no money to pay your bill and you will lose everything. I have had the pleasure of being a customer over 25 years... an Army Veteran returning to a world where everything had changed ... SSN was for social security not credit reports and often times money was short and zi had to sell items that were precious to me to survive ... Then one Day I discovered Gem Pawn brokers who not only gave fair prices but would even give more time if needed. I was once told we don't want to take your valuables we want you as a customer. My experience was absolutely amazing. As soon as I walked into the Bay Ridge store on August 5th, I was warmly greeted by two women who immediately made me feel comfortable. This was my first visit, though I had looked up the place online beforehand and mentioned that my mom had been here before. I don't what the heck happened to my other yelp review for this location on Bergen street. Ugh....let's start over. Edwin was very kind and considerate and I bought a ring that I really didn't need --that's how nice he was. I was also looking at a cluster ring that he gave me discount but sort of exceeds my budget. He told me to ask a manager if they can get it down to a certain price, whether they will or won't ....I've been doing business for years with this location and in Manhattan. What great customer service. Want to be treated with respect ask for Cindy, a pleasant lady who will walk you through the process of buying, selling, or pawning. I was initially embarrassed but she helped me overcome my apprehension. The store is well stocked and located on a major thoroughfare. Public transportation a must NO PARKING. Great place to get electronics!!! Even though I wasn't pawning I was interested in the process. While I was in the electronics section I was introduced to the pawn manager Cindy. They are always nice in person and on the phone. I hav been with them for over 10 years. I would not trust having my jewelry anywhere else. I like that they have many locations because I live in the Bronx but they also have one in Harlem which I have been to both locations as well and the customer service is the same. The value is that they have many options to pay and locations to go to. I would recommend them to anyone. read more
