Four of us went to Gen on a Thursday evening, and sat at the sushi bar. The overall experience was delightful! Before ordering our meal, a pair of small appetizers was put in front of us. Mostly, we asked Tony to choose the sushi and sashimi creations for us, and he delivered it, not all at once, but in the more traditional Japanese style, a few carefully prepared pieces at a time. The variety of fishes was wonderful, particularly, including Uni, one of my favorites. The one non-raw-fish-eater in our party chose the beef Negimyaki dinner, a delicious dish and large enough to be a great souvenir for the next day. All this was accompanied by a good Sauvignon Blanc. On this visit the restaurant was not at all crowded, and, as a result, quiet. It seems that much of their business is takeout, at least on weekdays. I highly reccomend Gen Sushi for a delightful Japanese experience at a reasonable price. read more

Came here to celebrate my partner's sisters birthday. There was plenty of seating around 7:45pm. Service was prompt on a Friday night, especially since my partner's mom was able to converse in Mandarin with the waiters. We ordered two "rice less" rolls which was delicious and rich in flavor -- the Hudson River roll and the passion city roll. I loved that they didn't even need soy sauce or ginger. They were good with the sauce provided! Since we were celebrating, we got the love boat which had California rolls, eel special rolls, nigiri, and sashimi (chef's choice). It came with tuna, salmon, white tuna, and yellow tail as the choice of fish. The fish had super thick cuts and were very fresh from the counter. I love the sashimi with a squeeze of lemon and with soy sauce and wasabi. They even surprised us with a little birthday sparkler on top of a strawberry mochi cut up for the table. The mochi needed a little more time to thaw out but it's ok, it's the thought that counts. Overall, a great place if you're looking for sushi. If you are carb conscious, they've got you covered!! Though I didn't get to try it tonight, I'd try their rainbow Naruto roll next time which is tuna, yellow tail, and salmon sashimi wrapped in a thin cucumber wrap -- had it before elsewhere and it's delicious! read more

My friends and I decided on getting sushi for dinner and came across Gen Sushi, and what a treat. We enjoyed an incredible dinner here at Gen Sushi. The fish was incredibly fresh and the we loved how each dish looked coming out. Everything we tried was so flavorful, even the oysters which I'm always skeptical about at new restaurants. The restaurant was spacious and was easily able to seat all of us. Loved the decor and the service was great. Highly recommend Gen Sushi as my next favorite local sushi spot. Dined in on a weekend night. Tried making reservation but no one answered the phone. Plenty of parking in the strip mall lot. They were pretty busy so it took a while for the server to take our order but after that the service was good. The gyoza was very good. California roll was a 3/10 just not that fresh. The soup and salad were very good and the hibachi chicken was okay. They didn't have yummy sauce and the ginger sauce was just salad dressing. The food was okay and the service was good. We did see a staff member pull out a five gallon bucket from a fridge, put it in the floor, and ladle salad dressing into another container that was also on the floor. A good alternative to the larger and more crowded Hibachi places. They have two tepinayki tables in the way back and can always seat you. The chefs still put on a great show - they flip the shrimp, make the onion volcano, the bad jokes, etc. but it's much less insane. Prices are still astronomical- but it's hibachi and the portions are much larger (and the food just as good) than the bigger hibachi places. read more

Also we thought we will be seeing the whole process of cooking which we did not and it was our fault not to find out. So we walked in at 2:30, after our son's game and we were told to order take outs because they are closing till 5pm. At the end they told us that we can eat in but fast. The waitress was apparently not happy that we came and was showing it very well. And than the food came. What a disappointment. Small portions, blend, nothing special at all. I stopped here for lunch as it is close to another establishment I frequent. Given the general reviews I figured this could go extremely well or extremely poorly. Overall the experience I had was fine. I decided on the Sushi roll lunch special. I did 2 regular rolls and one of the chef rolls. I also tend to go more fish and less "cooked shrimp / vegetable". The portion size of the rolls was fine ad pricing was fair. In short the meal was good. It wasn't the most amazing sushi I ever had, nor was it anywhere near the worse. Staff was friendly and fairly quick to service. Overall I was happy with the experience. In short Gen as it comes to sushi is fine. If you are in the area and really in the mood for it, you should be OK with this choice. I wouldn't go out of my way, but I wasn't regretting the decision for sushi either. read more

Pleasantly surprised with this restaurant situated in the typical suburban strip mall. I was traveling in the area from work and found this place online. We walked in and sat at the sushi bar and the service was great. Will the manager/owner was super friendly and let us know about some specials. Huge fan of sushi -- second time coming here & sitting at the sushi bar. First of all Ken who was our sushi chef surprised us with a complimentary kani salad which is the first time I was given something on the house but also never had a kani salad before. So basically started off my epic Gen sushi experience with one of the best salad appetizers I've ever had at any sushi restaurant -- it was crisp, refreshing, tasty & had a decent kick. I went with a very standard order but with one caveat -- because we are sitting at the sushi bar -- the moment Ken our sushi chef compiled the art that he calls sushi -- we would eat it, being that incredibly freshly cut straight on our pallet & in our mouths -- there is no comparison. I was celebrating so of course have to have a traditional crab item. Everything was 10/10 from cleanliness the attentiveness of the staff, and the incredibly quick service by ken are sushi. Gen is our go-to sushi place and also offers hibachi which is great for my daughter. We are literally at Gen a few times a week because my kids love sushi and it's a great family place. The presentation of food was a 4.5/5 I think they presented the food well and was a similar presentation to other sushi restaurants I've been to. The quality of their food was low compared to the price of their food. I got a miso soup, house salad and a California roll. Miso soup and California roll were $1-$3 extra than they are at other sushi restaurants around the area. The place originally caught me off guard when I first walked in because it immediately smelt like a porta potty. Trying to ignore that, the ambiance was cute, cozy and has a casual vibe. The food was fine but I wasn't too crazy about it the miso soup came out warm, and the ginger dressing gave the salad a good kick. California roll didn't seem as fresh as I intended it to be. The service was great and we got our food very fast! No reservations on a Monday around 6:30pm. Overall 3/5 I think I've caught this restaurant on an off day but can definitely see the potential. read more

Let me start by saying that I used to come to this restaurant all the time with my co-workers and although the service was never that great, the food was reliably good. Not sure what happened, but our family of 5 went there the day after Thanksgiving and the both the service and the food were absolutely horrendous. It was also very dirty, which we noticed after sitting and looking around. I tried to call for a reservation and no one answered the phone so we showed up at 5:20, shortly after they opened at 5. My husband ran in to be sure we could get seated and came to the car to tell us we could be seated, but we had to be out in an hour. That was fine with us since our youngest child is 1.5 and probably wouldn't last much longer anyway. We were rushed to order. We got our soup and the cooking began immediately. There is no soup and salad combo with Hibachi here, which is unusual. Apparently they serve either soup OR salad. We were not offered the option. The soups just showed up. There was also no "show" for the Hibachi. I had just finished cutting up my 1.5 year old's meal and the waitress appeared with a bunch of to go containers asking if we wanted to wrap up our food. We were all still eating and I was literally mid-bite on my first bite of food! I said to the waitress, "We don't have to leave, do we?" to which she responded "Yes we have reservations". I guess I am partly to blame. I should have known not to eat here when they said we had to be out in an hour, but our 4 and 12 year old really wanted Hibachi, and we didn't want to disappoint them. I declined the to-go containers because I was really caught off guard and put off (and the food was not good anyway). Immediately thereafter, the waitress handed me the check for $124! We left a nominal tip, but should not have paid for a thing. I handed the check to the hostess on our way out and said "You promised us an hour, and we did not even get to finish our food" and she responded " I don't believe you". I said, "You don't believe me? Go and look at the plates of food we left on the table. We will never come back." I do not recommend this restaurant. How they treated us was not only rude, but deceptive. Based on what happened, they never intended to give us the full hour we were promised, and for the hostess to say she didn't believe me when there were plates of food left on the table is ludicrous! Had I known my family would have been rushed in and out within 30 minutes for hibachi, I would have never considered coming here. We arrived around 7:45 and it was our first (and now last) time coming here. The website says they close at 9pm, but they just must have wanted to close earlier. By 8:20 they handed us the check (about 10 minutes after our food was finished being made) The waitress and the hibachi chef stood over us waiting for payment. As soon as we signed the credit card slip, they were trying to take the book (we hadn't even put the tip in there yet) but they were so fast to assume we weren't tipping because they were chatting directly behind us. FYI- we never leave a tip on a credit card, CASH ALWAYS! Never again will we come here. My kids were rushed and we didn't even get to finish our meals. They even handed us to go containers. I wish I took a picture of what was left on our plates of our food, we were so annoyed we just wanted to leave. We didn't even pack it. We spent $130 plus tip and it was a complete waste. I don't get the bad reviews for this place. I've been here numerous times over the past two years and have never had surly service or bad food. That being said, there are tons of other sushi places in the area that have better reviews and sushi so probably won't frequent here much. I had spicy tuna rolls, a shrimp tempura roll, and an order of shumai. Spicy tuna rolls were eh. The shrimp tempura roll was super meh, definitely wouldn't order that again. The shumai was fine.
