Nigiri options on B. Sushi Sashimi on the Boat for 4
    Jen H.

I'm still thinking about my dinner at Yuki Japanese Restaurant. I'm sure we will be back next time we're in town. My friends grew up around here and as soon as we said "oh yeah let's meet up at that sushi spot by the bowling alley and the train tracks" they knew exactly where I was talking about. It was easy to call and accommodate a group as large as 12 people. It was set up where we could easily catch up at one end of the table to another. It was also convenient to be able to easily split the check amongst multiple couples and groups within our group. There were so many options on the menu it was exciting to see. A group of us got the sushi boat for 4 and was greatly satisfied with how it came out. The presentation was beautiful and the four of us were very happy with the choices chef made for sashimi, nigiri, and special rolls. Very easy to split and we were very happy with the quality and taste. In addition to the boat, sushi lovers like ourselves couldn't just stop at the boat. We ended up with edamame, fried chicken, and rock shrimp as appetizers. All were delicious but my favorite was the creamy sauce on the rock shrimp. We added in the shichimi torched salmon and Phoenix rolls to just see how they are. I'm so glad we said "treat yo'self" and added those on. The shichimi was a different and more citrus flavor but you could taste the freshness. We've been on a torched salmon kick lately and it's been delicious. I really enjoyed the Phoenix roll as someone who is a fan of spicy tuna. I appreciated less rice since we were about to get a lot of it in the sushi boat. Overall we really enjoyed our time at Yuki and will be back again when the whole crew is in town!

Update* Ordered delivery again and found the quality to be worse. I would stick to the hot dishes here. The spicy tuna tasted a bit funny.

Good but not great sushi. Very friendly service. Plenty of menu choices, but sushi not the kind of fresh we usually get in NYC

The restaurant was casual and comfortable, and the staff seemed very much on top of what appeared to be a very robust takeout order business. While we made our selections live at the cash register, we saw a continuing rotation of patrons coming to grab their meals. The staff had the process down, though, as they maintained their patience, quickly prepared the food, and got everything organized and packed without flaw. One of the items we tried was the Clear Soup, which could have used more mushrooms, but had a flavorful broth infused with fried onions. We also had the Steamed Shrimp Gyoza and Steamed Shrimp Shumai, which had surprisingly different flavors. Both were fresh and delicate, with the Shumai having a bit more of a seafood-forward kick. While we enjoyed the few bites that we sampled from Matsu, we will need to go back to try some sushi from their vast menu that included loads of raw rolls, cooked varieties, and interesting custom creations. If that was not enough of a reason on its own, clearly the continuous flow of takeout diners and slew of local awards on the walls were signs that we needed to return. Plus, that way I would be able to write a more thorough review.

Food quality was actually very good. But here's my issue that I had…read more I work at a hospital, and me and several other coworkers placed a very large order. Our order was nearly $150 worth of various rolls and appetizers. No part of our order was a "party platter." but for some reason, the restaurant decided to combine all of the separate rolls into one giant platter. I specifically called the restaurant before our order arrived and said that the order is for several different people and to provide at least 6 chopsticks, and at least 6 separate containers of soy sauce. Because the order is not for one person. You would think that each roll would be packaged in the little rectangular to go containers. I didn't think I would have to specify for each roll to be packaged separately. If I ordered a party platter, then I would expect it to come in one large platter in one of those round large containers, but that is not what we ordered. Six different people ordered various types of sushi rolls, but the restaurant took it up upon themselves to put it in one large container without even asking us if this is OK. People with serious allergies to fish may not want their sushi touching their avocado roll or sweet potato roll. The woman on the phone did not understand the problem with what they did, plating all of our sushi rolls in one platter and didn't offer any type of solution. Not only this, they didn't even provide paper plates or extra containers so that we can divide up our sushi rolls. The restaurant just assumed that all of the different orders should be in one container. Like what?! If I ordered from an Italian spot, it's like if one person ordered meatballs, and someone ordered chicken parm, and another person ordered a pasta and the restaurant just throws everything all together in one large half tray! No, we ordered all different rolls, and they should be packaged as such, not one platter.

However, we recently had a craving for sushi on a Saturday evening, and I called to place a pick-up order. The woman that answered the phone was very friendly, and, when I arrived to gather my order, she was just as pleasant. In fact, as I left the restaurant with my food, the sushi chefs even wished me well. In terms of the space, it was definitely on the smaller side with only a few tables, but a decent-sized sushi bar. The atmosphere was casual, but it was decorated nicely enough to work as a dine-in spot also. We had ordered a few rolls to share, and when I got home with the bag, we were pleasantly surprised to see that the restaurant had thrown in two complimentary soups and two salads. The miso soups were creatively served in paper coffee cups with plastic lids, which managed to work perfectly, because, since it was a cooler evening, I wound up drinking my broth like a beverage. In fact, to that end, it was more like a drink, since we only received two small squares of tofu and a piece of seaweed in each of ours. Regardless, the soup tasted good, though the seaweed was a bit off the usual color. The side salads were not great. The lettuce was wilted, and there were way too many onions. The dressing was also a bit more tangy than other ginger dressings I had had. In terms of the rolls, we ordered one standard and two specialty offerings to share. The common Eel Avocado Roll was packed with fish and large slices of avocado, and it was honestly one of the better versions of this variety that we had had. The Super Fire Roll included yellowtail and scallion inside, which was then topped with torched tuna, eel sauce, spicy mayo, and fresh jalapeño. The color of the yellowtail was on the pink side, which at first gave me pause, but research proved was actually fine. Aside from that, I thought it was a tasty roll. Our last one was the Princess Christiana Roll, which had a center of crabmeat, avocado, and cucumber, as well as toppings of baked salmon, eel sauce, and an actual salad with lettuce, crabmeat, and tobiko. Now, the restaurant had a massive list of unique rolls, which made it hard to select what to order, but this one seemed like one of the most unique of the bunch. I had never seen fully-cooked salmon used in sushi, nor had I ever seen a roll topped with a mound of salad. While the fish all seemed fresh, some of the avocado was browning, and the lettuce was once again wilted. In this case, I would have said that the greens might have gotten too warm on top of the baked fish, but the side salad was just as limp. In addition, we had ordered the Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna and jalapeno appetizer, which we just ate along with the maki rolls. The rice patty could have been crunchier and the fish could have been pinker in color, but it tasted fine overall. We agreed that Johnny Roll House had some positive and some negative points. While we had had better sushi elsewhere, their food was still good, which meant that we could keep it as an option if we were looking for a sushi spot. (Speaking of, I should note that they did not offer many cooked Japanese items, aside from Beef Teriyaki.)
