On our adventure to visit every state park in Kentucky, General Butler was high on our list because it was one of the closest to where we live. Roughly a 45 minute drive from Louisville and tucked into the town of Carrollton. It's easily accessible off of the highway. I think I expected this park to have a bit more to it. It's definitely not a bad park, but just OK compared to the other state parks in Kentucky. Facilities: Probably one of the best perks about this park. The resort itself is pretty nice and has a large pool. The park is also right in town so I never had an issue with cell-service, plus everything outside of the park is super close. They also had some picnic areas you can rent out, and a small mini golf course. Scenery: The main trail to hike at General Butler is Fossil Trail, which is a 4.5 mile loop around the park. It's up on a hill, so you do get some cool views of town, but besides that there isn't a whole lot to see. A majority of the trail is forest. It's definitely still a nice place to visit. Just not one of my favorites.

We have an annual tradition of visiting Clifty Falls State Park at Thanksgiving. Back in 2016, I waited too long to secure our room at the inn, so we needed to find somwhere else to stay over the holiday. After a web search we stumbled across this park, right across the Ohio River, that offered camping, lodge, and cottage accommodations. It has since become its own annual tradition and we've been back at least once a year since! While we normally visit in November, things are pretty quiet, and there aren't many planned or outdoor activities. The leaves are beautiful, hiking trails are all around, and the view from the lookout point is a can't miss. On our most recent trip over Labor Day weekend, park staff were around and there was something going on at all times, from crafts in the rec center to children's activities at the campgroup. We took a guided hike, played mini golf, and paddleboated around Butler Lake for only $10. While they have a campground and lodge/hotel, we have only stayed in the cottages, which are cozy and well equipped. A variety of sizes are available, for single travelers to large families. Each has a fridge and cooktop/oven so you can stock up at the local Kroger and cook your own meals. The park recently began providing a free breakfast buffet in the lodge for cottage and hotel guests, as well as a grab and go breakfast on the last day- great to enjoy on the ride home. Definitely worth the trip from central or southern Indiana.

On a beautiful day, we hiked Fossil Trail at General Butler State Resort Park Resort. The trailhead was easy to find and there was plenty of parking (which was also right next to the event center). The trail was about a 4 mile trail, but we must have added on another trail to the hike because we ended up hiking about 7 miles during the day. The trail was super well-marked and we were always able to see the next marker. The trail was pretty moderate in terms of difficulty, if it's rained recently, prepare to slide around on the trail a bit. We ultimately made it to lookout point that was pretty cool. Overall, the trail is well-kept and I would definitely recommend it. You'll definitely feel it in your legs when you're done!

A friend and I went to hike Fossil trail for a birthday celebration. I had never been to the park before, but it looks well taken care of and full of activities! I am excited to come back in the summer to enjoy more--the restaurant, pool, etc. The trail started off a bit disappointing since it was so close to roads and traffic, not many sounds of nature! Once you get past the beginning it's a gorgeous, well-marked trail and has a few spots/trails you can add onto. We lunched at the "overlook" which was equally peaceful and relaxing and spotted a few other hikers who were all respectful of social distancing. I would definitely come back.

My wife and I are staying at our first Kentucky State Park Lodge. School is in session so there is no crowd. Hannah is working the front desk. She is cordial and helpful. Some activities are not available at this time, but Hannah is seeing that we get to do them anyways, namely mini golf. Frisbee golf and perhaps boating. We have ridden around the park and noticed some folks making use of the nice wooded campgrounds with new playgrounds. There are lots of deer on the property. Besides the lodge and campground, there are many cabins of various size to stay in. This park is one of the smallest in Kentucky, but it has plenty to do. I'm sorry I didn't bring my archery gear as that is also available in the park. There is a restaurant and bar at the lodge and several restaurants nearby in Carrolton. There is also a Kroger and Walmart close to the park. It is always helpful having a fridge and coffee pot provided in the room and that is the case here also.

I love this place! Disclaimer- there is nothing fancy about it. The views are beautiful and lots of nature to explore. The pool is huge. This is a great place to have a retreat, family reunion, etc. They also have team building options. It's so convenient to have a restaurant onsite but the food is really heavy and fried.

Glamping!!! Read on if you abhor real camping. I've loved this word ever since the first time I saw it. This kinda "camping" suits me perfectly. General Butler does it perfectly for me with his air conditioned/heated cottages. We get to be in the great outdoors while not having to: sleep on hard ground; wonder if it will be too cold/hot or rainy; or use scary toilets/bathrooms. The kitchen set up is basic but has everything you'll need plus a microwave. There is a fire ring outside so I was still able to build a fire and cook bacon and eggs over wood fire in the morning. What else can one ask for??? I did feel a bit gratuitous when I saw there was not one, but two flat screen TVs in the one bedroom cottage...plus a gas fireplace! Besides the towels and sheets, they even provide soap and shampoo! And there is an iron and board in the closet?? Well, it is glamping! We did see a deer and a raccoon on the camp grounds...so it is camping. One note: do bring seasonings if you plan on cooking. I was glad I brought some salt and seasoning since I did not find any in the cabinets.

Site 3 is a pull through site.

We needed 30 amp service and was 60 feet away . Water was 50 feet away. The site has a picnic table and fire ring. Plenty of space for family and pets. Bath house was near and the dump station can handle 2 at a time. Campers appear to have been there many times. Quiet at night and kid friendly.

If you enjoy camping but don't want to give up showers, toilets, water faucets or paved roads, this is the park for you. The fire pits even have built-in grills for cooking. Camp fees are a bit pricey, about $20 a site, and no alcohol is allowed (not that park security checks). The park isn't far from town, where you can get groceries, fast food, booze and more.

I stayed in the cottages and they were super nice but could use some house keeping. Had a great time swimming at the lodge as well!

We stayed in room 218 of the lodge which I really liked because the balcony looks out on a forest/trail.

The hikes are very approachable, even for families with young kids. The trails are well-marked, not overly strenuous, and give you just the right mix of exercise and relaxation. My kids loved exploring the paths, spotting wildlife, and getting the chance to just run and play in a safe outdoor space. It's a wonderful way to introduce children to hiking without overwhelming them. For families, this place is ideal. The trails are wide enough in many areas for strollers, and there are plenty of spots to pause, take in the view, or enjoy a quick snack break together. It's the kind of place where you can spend an hour or the whole afternoon and leave feeling refreshed and reconnected. What I really love is how accessible and welcoming it feels--perfect for both locals and visitors to Madison. Whether you're looking for a short nature walk, a family outing, or a peaceful hike to clear your head, these trails are a gem. We had planned to play on there small playground but she fell asleep so we Chelsea out the scenery instead. They have lots of water that's ankle high and lots of rock that allows you to walk out in and get in the water. It also a few small trails that surround the park that lets you see yeh park from several angles. The park includes seven benches on the banks of the water for viewing pleasure. They also have a giant pavilion that can be rented out. Which looks like at one point was very impressive. Now it's not upkept and filled with graffiti. It's honestly the only eye sore here. Hopefully they clean it up. Overall cool place that looks like it has 3 different parking lots for different entry points. Although the water is low enough and there is a bough rocks to easily walk this small park and get to any entrance. We had a nice visit here and I look for art to coming back with my other kids and enjoying the exploring and playground.
