Wallauer Paint & Hardware saved me a few dollars…read more I needed salt pellets for my home's water softener, and wow... the price of these bags has gone up considerably over the last year. After shopping around, I found this Ace Hardware was actually a bit cheaper than the big-box home improvement stores. Ordering online was easy (and don't forget to go through your favorite cash-back website before checking out...). My order was ready for in-store pickup a few days later. Pickup couldn't have been easier. They even offered to help carry everything out to my car, but carrying ten 40-pound bags is lovely exercise... so I declined. The store is easy to get to, just off Route 59, with a convenient parking lot and quick access in and out. It's branded as Wallauer Paint & Hardware, but it's also an Ace Hardware location. In addition to the usual hardware selection, they carry a full line of Benjamin Moore paints. Smooth experience, competitive prices, and friendly service. I'll definitely check here the next time I need supplies.

Lowe's of Orangeburg is a solid home improvement store that carries the usual Lowe's lineup --…read morelumber, tools, appliances, paint, seasonal items, and home project materials. It's a convenient stop for both quick project runs and larger home improvement shopping. It's usually a good experience here, but I was especially impressed during my most recent visit because of their newer in-store pickup locker system. When you walk in, you can scan your order barcode at the pickup screen (or enter your order number), and one of the lockers automatically pops open with your items inside. It was quick, easy, and pretty cool to see in action. I even took a video of the process to share with this review. There's only so much you can fit in a locker, but hey, this is a big improvement over the old process. Still not five stars as I'm not a fan of their current return policy.

Lowe's recently updated their in-store pickup process (at least, at this location), and it's a big…read moreimprovement. It's very streamlined. When you arrive, there's a screen where you can scan your order barcode or enter your order number. Your name and order pop up on a monitor along with how long you've been waiting -- very much like the old Sears pickup system from years ago, and it works well. While I was waiting, three different employees stopped to ask if I was being helped, which I appreciated. When my order was ready, someone brought it out on a dolly and helped me load it into my car. Loading turned out to be a bit challenging for a few reasons, but the employee helping me was incredibly patient and genuinely helpful throughout the process. While I'm not a fan of driving through the traffic to get to this location, pickup here was a breeze.

Not much has evolved at this store over the last 20+ years. When you walk in, they still have a single counter dedicated to customer service, returns, and order pickups. Yeah... imagine the line and how slowly it moves. They do have lockers for picking up smaller online orders, although I've never used them. Curbside pickup is available too if you'd rather not go inside. One of Home Depot's biggest strengths is the garden center. Compared to many local nurseries, the prices are almost always better. You can even order trees online with free shipping. I've done that several times, and what arrives has always been healthy and usually large enough to meet expectations. Outside, you'll find a large selection of trees and shrubs, and there's a huge parking lot, so getting in and out is easy. Staff members are usually helpful when you need them. If I had to point to one thing this store should improve, it's that all-in-one customer service counter. Ugh. Separate returns from pickups already!
