Today Tony and I stopped at Gene's Place or Gene's Beer Garden on Wilson Street in Morgantown WV. This neighborhood bar & grill has been around since 1944 in a older historical part of town called Greenmont. The bar is our type of place...a neighborhood hangout a really great walk into the past...a dive bar!!! The people were really friendly! We grabbed a old fashion wooden booth in the back. Tony ordered a PBR and I got a tea! We both got a Hot Dog. Mine was Chili, Slaw & Onions!!! Tony had Chili, Onions & Cheese!!! The Hot Dogs were very good!!! I loved the sauce or chili as I call it. Not a fan of the slaw, it was store bought not homemade. But it was a good Dog!! NOT THE BEST I EVER HAD, But in the top 20!! I would definitely go here just for the atmosphere and Tony a beer!!! read more

An out of towners review that ultimately wont matter for locals. 5 stars for the genuinely welcoming and friendly staff here. Four stars for the building itself. Two stars for everything else. The oldest bar in Morgantown they say? Well its clear this place is old from all the history looming around the old pictures of patrons, events, and old school bar feel. As you explore the building beyond the first draft room, the place unfolds like a labyrinth in size and layout. The staff here are reminiscent of something you'd see in Cheers. Where everybody knows your name and the surrounding community members. Most of the patrons while I visited on a Thursday lunch time were either beer distributors or old timers, but they added to the charm of this place. The mural outside is a great piece of art and worth checking out on its own. Inside the hallway by the bathrooms, check sure to check out the SisGene Chapel fresco in the ceiling. The pepperoni rolls were nothing special. Same stuff you'd find in nearby gas stations. I cant critique it too hard because its not even made by Genes but by Julie's. The hot dogs were something you'd get from a sports concession, with better chili served on top. Whatever solid cheese they use gave the meal a creamier profile than I would have liked. To the point that the creaminess was a distraction throughout the meal. While I wish they had more fixings like onions and relish, its hard to complain when its $3.50 a hotdog. Their selection is modest, with few options that at least span different varieties of beer. Granted I can in February, so I didn't get to check out the outdoor seating if they had any (I would assume since they call themselves a beer garden). Im shocked that several locals recommended Gene's specifically for their mediocre chili dogs, but I can see how the building and staff may have won their hearts over. read more

We normally love coming to Gene's and enjoying the staff, selection of beers, and the atmosphere. Tonight though, we refused to even stop because there were 8 people sitting on the steps smoking and vaping. I refuse to walk through that to get inside. I hope you can ensure there is a clear pathway to get inside of your establishment or you will be losing an out more than just us as customers. read more

Gene's has been in Morgantown forever. It was one of my go-to stops in college 30 years ago and it still is today. You really can't beat the dogs for the price, which is further enhanced by the charming setting. It is nice to know that somethings don't change. I live in D.C. and there is something really American about having a chili cheese dog and a PBR for around $5, I hate when I see some of the D.C. "gourmet" hotdog shops jack up the price for what is basically the same dog I get at Gene's Gene's regulars are also very friendly, and I could spend hours listen to some of the regulars talk about the old days. This place is awesome. Located in a neighborhood. When you first walked in, I noticed the cool old school décor. Love the atmosphere and mood to this place. Very cozy. Drinks were cheap and bartender and even the locals were extra friendly. I heard they are known for making great hot dogs, so I got one. It was bomb! Very simple with a good flavor. Gene's has been a fixture in Morgantown since 1944. Cheap beer, good times, loyal regulars and hot dogs are the mainstays of this town landmark. I come back here every time I visit home (sometimes it's my first stop). There is no other bar in Morgantown quite like this one. Gene's is an old school place...a throwback of sorts. You step inside and you step back in time a bit. Gene's is also great for Mountaineer or Steeler gameday and it's one of the few places in town where, during the summer, you can watch the Pirates lose twice. Food recommendatoins: I eat my hotdog with chili, slaw, ketchup, and onion. The chili-cheese pepperoni roll is some of the best drunk food of all time. Do not get the cheese plate. The bartenders might be crabby and the patrons surly, but it's all just part of the Gene's Nation Experience. I have to update this to add in a comment about the music. Gene's has been doing a great job of getting shows on the weekend and I've actually come back into Morgantown to check out a few. Mostly local acts a few out-of-towners do a good job livening up the place on occasional Fridays and Saturdays. I'd say this is more so 3.5 stars for me overall. But if you are looking for a place where it is cozy, crowded with good people who actually will listen and absorb indie music and a good selection of craft beer, then this is the place. As an LA girl visiting for a few days, I was shown the local scene. I can see why this is a popular place. No pretentiousness. Just a place to chill out with some friends and hang. read more

The Realest of the real when it comes to classic dive bars. They always have the best variety of local beers and snacks. Food here is pretty solid for bar food, nothing crazy but the hotdogs are enough to get you in the door. Pepperoni rolls on deck and they warm them up for you. Genes is perfect if you wanna wants to grab a few with your squad or a late night stop on your way home and wanted another beer or grub if not both. Gene's is like the Cheers of Morgantown. It has it's own cast of outsiders, insiders, and people stopping by. People might even know your name. It's a comfortable place, and the people are pretty cool. Gene's history is Morgantown's history. Walk in sometime, and examine the photos on the walls. The beer selection is pretty minimal, and they don't serve liquor. They do few things, but do them well. They sell hot dogs, pepperoni rolls, and an assortment of fried foods. The hot dogs are a Morgantown tradition, and the pepperoni rolls have more customization options than a 1996 Honda Civic. If you attend WVU or have spent more than a week in town, your visit will always be incomplete, unless you have been to Genes. read more

While I came here for a local party, I would never have known about this place otherwise. If you've been to Mario's Fishbowl (the original) in town, this is a pretty similar environment. Small, dive, comfortable, and sometimes a little crowded. While I don't know their typical menu, for a Beergarden, I was surprised to find out that there were only five beers on tap. That's fine, but there's not really a whole lot to keep my attention. If you're wanting a quiet evening with your beer, come here. read more

Gene's is still the best chili and onion hotdog pup in all of Morgantown. I graduated from WVU thirty years ago and finally slowed down enough to come back to the old stomping grounds. The dogs were just as I remembered "great". The "red eyes" were the usual perfect mix of beer and tomato juice. I was in heaven. I came there just see what is it like. At is an awesome bar that makes you feel home where everything is delicious and affordable. I like the limited beer & food options; it's a feature not flaw.
