What do you do when you are looking for something to eat and you discover a place close by has a wing special. You go and check it out. I am a true fan when it comes to places off the beaten path or unexpected. So we happened on this place. The waitress was very nice. We ordered a combination of wings and waited. This place seems like a little neighborhood bar that has regulars who frequent. Everyone was courteous and cordial. It isn't a fancy place, so casual dress is just fine. I tried the fish fry to go one Friday and it was really good! I would go back just for that! It was big and came with Mac salad, potato salad, fries and coleslaw. Their fries seem to be homemade. I had a Reuben to go which was yummy too! One day my boyfriend was waiting for our car to be done at the mechanic and they gave him a free pop which I thought was really nice! Every Monday my friends and I go somewhere new in Buffalo for wings. This Monday we chose Gene's! I had never been here before but already heard great things from multiple people. My dad is obsessed with their fish fries and gets them every Friday. Upon entering you will see the bar area which has multiple TVs, a nice selection of drafts, dividers between bar seats and socially distanced tables. The booths in the rear of the restaurant also have plexiglass dividers. There is also a back patio which you'd never think when pulling up. The staff follows COVID-19 protocols and the bathroom was impressively clean! Onto the wings: Medium/Garlic Parm: I asked our bartender/server if it was possibly to have these mixed together. I really wanted the garlic parm but wasn't feeling a "dry" wing that night. I asked for extra saucy and I friggin got it! These were some of the best garlic parm wings I've ever had and I have been thinking about them nonstop ever since. I had more to write but I must sadly admit that this has been sitting in my drafts since our visit. I guess I will just have to come back and have the wings again to tell you all about the rest of the flavors! I can't remember the bartenders name. I want to say Christine? Hopefully she's there when I come back because she was AMAZING. So friendly and wasn't annoyed at all by our requests. This place was ok. Went with a group of 7 and they only had one table that could fit us all and it was taken so we had no choice but to be separated. It was super loud in there so we couldn't talk and chat with the other members of our party. The servers were nice and the place was clean. I ordered chicken fingers and they were okay. Some ordered the fish fry and they seemed happy with their choices. It felt like a bit of a wait though to get drinks once seated. Super disappointing, what happened? Junkyard's fish fry used to be the best beer battered fry around. The fish was small and the batter was dry and crummy. Definitely not flaky and crispy as it was before. The fries were about a small fist-sized portion, plus the coleslaw was wet and runny. I asked mine to be without the coleslaw and Mac salad; I guess I was wrong to think I would receive a lot more fries since that was my only side. But it was a pathetic amount. And especially for the price, I definitely won't be returning. They can throw their fish fry back into the junkyard! read more

Stopped in yesterday for a fish fry. It was a little later and you could tell the place had been busy. Probably tired, our waitress was very pleasant, sat us and promptly got us drinks. This is a bar that does a good fish fry business and basket style food during the week. I've had a great corned beef sandwich here. It didn't take long for the fish to come out. Accompanied with fresh fries, slaw, potato and macaroni salad, the fish was nicely done. I prefer a breaded fish but the batter was nice and not too thick. It's a blue collar spot so don't be put out by a couple of kids running around or if somebody turns up the music when their favorite song comes on. Beer was cold, fish was fresh and the locals were enjoying themselves. A good time was had! read more

It's not too often I feel compelled to write a bad review, unless I'm really annoyed. Tonight myself and 5 others went to the Junkyard for dinner. Everything about that experience was weird and disappointing. The waitress came over and took our drink order. That was fine. Then she took our dinner order. One friend ordered the homemade pizza logs. Another ordered the loaded nachos. One ordered a "ham sub". One ordered a beef on weck with fries. I split food with my friend and we got a Reuben and single order of wings. About 20 minutes after the order was placed, the waitress came in from having a smoke to let me know they were out of corned beef. The homemade pizza logs were really hollow. $8 for 4 hollow pizza rolls. The loaded nachos came in a small soup bowl. That was also $8. The ham sub came out but it was capicola. When it was brought to the waitresses attention that no capicola was ordered she said "I could have sworn you said capicola" I guess capicola and ham sound similar. Not to mention, the sub roll was similar to a large crouton. The beef on weck was dry. No horseradish was served. The bun was really soft. The fries were rock hard. Could maybe break a tooth. No ketchup with those either. The wings weren't bad. Not amazing but really not bad. The group I was with let the waitress know about some of the mishaps. She told us it was because the cook was new. I love when people blame the back of the house for their shortcomings. Overall, I guess I would have to say "Junkyard" is the perfect name for this place. NEVER AGAIN!!! read more

Perfect idea of a dive bar. You can get a great beer at a great price. They have a big outdoor patio which is nice on warm notes. You can go out there to smoke or grab some fresh air. On top of that the food is pretty good! I've had their fish fry beer battered. It's the perfect balance between fish and crunch. Along with that it comes with hand cut French fries which are always a plus. I have also had their bar food later at night on different days. The fries are always great and my boyfriend has also had their wings which he always says are good. This bar is a favorite spot of mine but it just depends on what you're looking for. Best wings in wny hands down. I been to duffs, I been to nine eleven tavern, Gabriel's gate, and other various well known local establishments. My wife and I continously use this place as a way to compare wings. Very crispy. And several times when I see people try the wings there, they were just as impressed. I want this place to exist forever. Very affordable food with a great quality. I love the wings here, and their burgers are amazing. I used to drive by this place without knowing or realizing this place existed i took a gamble and decided to go inside.. Been a fan for 4 years. So, let me say right off that I am not an aficionado of fish fries, but my Buffalonian mom is, and she delighted in bringing me to Gene's for the traditional local Friday night dinner. All in all, the fish was fresh and nicely crisped. It came with sides of macaroni salad, potato salad, cole slaw and french fries - all for just under $10!!! I'm actually doing the Review on the Band that played here tonight. If you ever get the chance to hear them, definitely go because they are aaàaamazing!!! "Living Will" are 3 guys Bass, Guitar & Drummer. They may be Middle Aged (maybe older, not sure), but boy they can seriously Rock a Stage. They play everything from "Frank Zappa" to "The Beatles". Drum, Bass, Guitar solos, The Guitarist was " skatting" (spelling??), Blues fusion a little bit of everything & The Bass player is jamming tunes while being comical while Guitar dueling he did his own Version of "Life On the Wild Side" that was petty aaawesome & entertaining!! All I can say is watch for this Band, you won't be sorry. I sure will be watching for there next performance. read more

One and done. We have a friend who goes every Friday night and raves about the fish fry, so we decided to try it. With four tables in the place taken, all but one of which had already either been served or at least ordered, it STILL took almost ten minutes to get waited on. The waitress was apparently also cooking. No clue what the other waitress was doing. Ours seemed a bit short and snippy for the first half of the meal, before finally becoming more friendly come bill time. The fish portion was generous and well cooked, but a bland beer batter. The fries were overcooked and barely warm. The potato salad was not really worth even trying to eat. 2 fish fries, a pitcher of beer and tax was over $38.00. For that price I will get better fish and slow service elsewhere. read more

I was there with my family on 2/28/2020. We ordered 2 fish frys, a sub sandwich and 2 appetizers. I have been there several times in the past year and the food is good. The fish dinners were supposed to come with cole slaw, macaroni and potato salad and fires. Ours did not come with the cole slaw; so I inquired with the waitress. She told me that they ran out bc they served a lot of fish that day (we were there at 6pm). It was bad enough that the portions of the other sides were tiny, but they should have mentioned about the cole slaw or substituted it with something else. When I mentioned it to her, she told me they don't substitute items with their fish fries. I told her we were paying for something we did not receive. Others in the restaurant were also talking about it. She offered no solution and basically went on her way. Lastly, she never came around to refill the drinks. Gene's Junk Bar - Has one of the best tavern fish fries going! Beer batter is my delight, but he does many other ways. The fish fry comes with three salads and hand cut french fries. Priced at 11.95, only thing missing is rye bread. With the size of the portions you won't miss the bread. I'll finish with this, fish hangs off the plate and is always fresh. I go there year round.
